The optical properties of Au nanoparticles have been known for some time, with both Au colloids and Au nanoparticles embedded in glasses having been extensively studied. In this study, Pt nanoparticles have been incorporated into Au colloids, and the linear and non-linear optical properties investigated. UV-VIS spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy and the z-scan method have been used to examine the effects of such additions.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.

Illumination hardware developed in conjunction with previous Contracts H024202l, H0242049, and H0242023 had not been adequately tested in actual underground work situations. The purpose of this contract was to install and monitor this equipment on mining machines and in actual working places of coal mines to gain experience with the use of the lamps and support equipment in the abusive and critical environments for which they were intended. The equipment that was to be tested consisted of the following: a. Lamps -A variety of sizes of permissible fluorescent lamps which operate from 12 volts DC power. These include the following sizes: Model 8, (9 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/2 (14 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/3 (21 watts) 3" diameter; Model 20 (25 watts) 3" diameter; Model 30, (28 watts) 3" diameter; and Model 40, (39 watts) 311 diameter. Representative photographs of these lamps are shown in Figure 1-1 and 1-2.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).

Grade control in open pit mining requires the specification of dig limits that account for mineral grades, economic costs, and selectivity of mining equipment. Visual identification of ore rock types is ideal, but this is not always possible in lower grade disseminated deposits where ore/waste contacts are not visually discernible. In this case, conventional grade control practice consists of a two-step procedure (1) create a map of mineral grades at some selective mining unit scale, and (2) determine practical ore-waste boundaries or dig limits on the basis of the gridded block grades or assay information. This procedure is laborious, depends on a subjective assessment of where the boundary should be, and may be economically sub-optimal. We pose the determination of dig limits as an optimization problem and solve that problem with the technique of simulated annealing. Simulated annealing has the unique advantage of being able to combine multiple non-linear constraints into a single objective function. We use maximum profitability and the ability of the equipment to mine the proposed dig limits as constraints in the determination of optimal dig limits. We require a map of expected profit for eah block. Geostatistical techniques are recommended, for mapping expected profit but not necessary. Geostatistics will provide a quantification of the uncertainty in the grades within rock types using all available blasthole samples and exploration drilling. Some variant of L-optimal estimation or kriging can be used to determine the block-by-block classification that is economically optimum. We also need the expected profit for each block. It is unrealistic to assume free selection, that is, each block cannot be extracted independently of its neighbors. The optimal balance of ''accepting dilution'' and ''wasting ore'' is achieved to maximize profit subject to equipment constraints.

The present paper deals with mixing between the metal and slag phase during the ladle refining process, including vacuum degassing. Dispersion of metal drops in ladle slags has been studied. The results show a larger quantity of metal droplets in ladle slag during the alloying and stirring phase than during the subsequent vacuum degassing phase. The thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the interaction between metal drops and the slag matrix have been considered and probable reasons for the observed distribution discussed.

When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.

One of the best methods by which the results of accident-prevention work can be measured for any particular period is to keep an accurate record of the accident experience, which may then also be compared with the experience of others. The purpose of this report is to compare records of the salt-mining companies operating in Louisiana, and their assistance in making available their accident records is gratefully acknowledged. PRODUCTION Four companies produce salt in Louisiana -Avery Salt Co., Avery Island; Jefferson Island Salt Mining Co., Jefferson Island; Myles Salt Co., Weeks; and Carey Salt Co., Winnfield. Three of these companies operate within 30 miles of each other in the southern part of the State, and the other operates in the central part.

The effects of hydrogen on the properties of binary Ti-A1 alloys containing 2.5, 5, and 7 pct aluminum and ternary alloys of the same compositions with added interstitial elements oxygen, nihrogen, and carbon were stzdied. Aluminum increases the apparent hydrogen solubility of the a-phase, resulting in a marked increase in resistance to impact embrittlement. In the Ti-5Al and Ti-7Al alloys, for example, the addition of 180 and 305 ppm hydrogen, respectively, did not cause embrittlement, while unalloyed titanium was embrittled by as little as 75 ppm. The role of aluminum in increasing hydrogen solubility of the a-phase probably accounts for the excellent hydrogen tolerance of a-ß alloys containing considerable amounts of aluminum. There is some evidence that aluminum retards the rate of hydride precipitation. If so, these alloys may be susceptible to slow-strain embrittlement. UNALLOYED a-titanium is extremely sensitive to small amounts of added hydrogen in that there is a marked decrease in notch properties. For example, as little as 100 ppm hydrogen is sufficient to lower the room-temperature notch-impact strength from over 100 to less than 20 in.-lb.' TICOR South Africa is a new titanium feed stock producer. In the Ticor South Africa plant the ilmenite feed to the smelter plant is roasted to enhance its magnetic properties. This allows for the magnetic separation of chromite from the ilmenite. The magnetization reaction relies on partial oxidation with both under- and over-oxidation causing insufficient magnetization. To subject the roaster plant feed material to the required physical conditions a circulating fluid bed (CFB) roaster is used. This paper describes the development of a laboratory model that will aid in the control of the CFB roaster.

Ore from Henderson’s 7700 Southwest panel cave is transported between the production and truck haulage levels through a series of orepasses. A typical orepass complex consolidates dump points from four production drifts into two long bored raises feeding into a single truckloading chute. The system typically covers a vertical extent of 200 m and a lateral extent of 90 m. In the process of commissioning several initial orepass complexes, challenges with preferential draw in the long bored raises were observed. Preferential draw occurs when one long orepass mobilises much sooner and/or flows significantly faster than the other orepass. This has negative implications for orepass availability in the production drifts. As future mining at Henderson relies on the construction and use of such orepass systems, the development of appropriate design criteria and practical solutions to existing flow problems was necessary.A series of PFC3D numerical models were developed to assist in identifying the factors influencing preferential draw and possible corrective measures. The models helped to identify two primary factors that caused the preferential effect: the relative elevation of the brow at the bottom of each long bored raise, and the location of the bin used to funnel fragmented rock from both raises into the chute. This paper covers the initial design of the orepass complexes at Henderson, results of the numerical models, mitigation work done to date on existing orepass complexes, and design criteria for future construction.CITATION:Gresham, J and Turichshev, A, 2016. Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sublayer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced normally.

"The experimental flotation work described in this paper was undertaken to test the conclusions derived from a previous microscopic and chemical study of several samples of converter slag. That study3 resulted in the conclusion that approximately 90 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag wad in either the sulphide or metallic form, and that if the slag were cooled slowly the copper-bearing material would be in particles of such size that they would be freed from silicate and magnetite grains by grinding the slag to pass a 150-mesh sieve. If this were true, it should be possible to separate the copper-bearing grains from slowly cooled, converter slag by the flotation process.Many attempts, of which the author has seen no published account, have been made to treat slags, especially converter slags, by flotation. In every case these trials have been made with chilled slags, in which, as shown in the preceding report, the copper-bearing material is top finely disseminated, to be freed by any reasonable degree of grinding.The flotation tests described in this paper have shown that it is possible to recover by flotation about 30 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag containing 3 per cent copper and to obtain flotation concentrates which have a copper content of 35 per cent.Acknowledgment is made to G. As part of its research and development activities concerning coal mine operational/emergency communications sys terns, the Bureau of Mines commissioned several contractors to conduct electromagnetic (EM) noise studies and measurements that would aid the development of improved coal mine operational/emergency communications systems. The bulk of the noise studies and measurements were conducted in 1971. The Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) inherited the responsibility for monitoring the electromagnetic noise activities by mid-to-late 1971, and initiated a review and evaluation of the current and planned electromagnetic noise work. Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) was asked by PMSRC to assist it in performing this review and evaluation by placing stronger emphasis on certain tasks of existing Contract No. H0122026. This technical memorandum report presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of our review and evaluation of the electromagnetic noise measurements of the five contractors we were asked to examine. Our review and evaluation effort included meetings and telephone discussions with technical staff of each contractor; serving as Technical Discussion Leader of a "Contractor's Round Table Meeting on EM Noise, Surface and Subsurface, Operating and Non-Operating Mines" called by the Bureau of Mines; examination and discussion of contractor reports and relevant open literature; sample verification calculations; and the documentation of our findings, conclusions, and recommendations by this report.

Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.
