A Reconnaissance of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines, under instructions of the Secretary of the Interior, in the spring of 1918. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the island. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese- and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to a determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. Wile it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Moreover, the necessity for paying particular attention to the ore deposits and the mines precluded the possibility of making more general studies of the geology of the region, and of making satisfactory collections of country rock and of fossils, and so for other details as to the geography and geology of Cuba the reader is referred to the report by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer.l Mr. Burch returned to the United States about 10 days in advance of the writer, who continued, in company with Sr. Montoulieu, investigations of reported deposits in Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, and Santa Clara Provinces. Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

Control and mitigation of building response to construction activities are assuming a greater role in design decisions for underground construction. Alternatives for controlling building response have multiplied with the continued development of ground modification methods, better control of construction activities that cause ground movements, and increased understanding of building behavior and response. This paper describes approaches to estimating building response to construction-related ground displacements caused by adjacent excavation and highlights the discussion with several case history examples. Examples discussed includes experiences with two, seven-story historic structures, supported by timber piles with granite block pile caps, which were underpinned in preparation for ground-freezing ground stabilization and tunnel construction beneath the buildings. The elevation of each building column was monitored and elevation adjustments were actively performed during construction. The second example examines the performance of a slurry wall braced cut, 45 to 50 feet deep penetrating through a stiff crust into a soft clay layer and associated building response. This cut was immediately adjacent to two, approximately 15-story office buildings, which were supported by deep foundations founded in the stiff crust.

"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.

Ore samples generally require preparation before analysis. Serious problems can occur with contamination degradation and particle size effects. Both grinding element contammation and sample cross contamination havebeen bound to be related to sample hardness and operator technique. For best results with minerals relevant to the steel industry, the use of Siebtechnik-type mills required a combination of careful planning, short grinding periods and intermediate sieving of the sample. The results may be extended to most mineral, rock, and refractory sample preparabons.

During 1991 through 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) -Alaska Field Operations Center (AFOC) in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) -Arctic District Office and the State of Alaska, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS), conducted exploration, geological, geochemical, geophysical, mineral resource, and mineral potential investigations in the 6.7 million hectare Colville Mining District (CMD) study area. This mining district study area, located in northern Alaska, includes the Colville River drainage basin as well as 0.35 million hectares of the southern part of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA). This investigation was conducted as part of the Bureau's continuing Mineral Land Assessment (MLA) mining district program. The Bureau's MLA mining district program is designed to provide reliable and comprehensive mineral resource information that supports mineral resource policy and land use decisions made by Congress and Federal land management agencies.

Successful design, operation and completion of a surface waste management facility for a diamond mine located in Canada?s northern environment requires careful planning to minimize short and long term environmental impacts. As part of the mine development application process, best practice standards were applied using conventional engineering to reduce the environmental effects of the mine waste facility at the Snap Lake Diamond Project. This paper presents the design criteria, site conditions, material characteristics and engineering management objectives considered for optimization of the development plan. Insight into the engineering analyses, development alternatives, monitoring program and reclamation strategy plan to be undertaken during mine operations to provide opportunity for adaptive management and to minimize environmental impacts is provided.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

Coal mine bursts have represented a major hazard for U.S. mining operations for more than 90 years. During this time, many prevention controls have been developed and tested. This paper reviews 11 prevention control techniques. Although coal mine bursts are not common events in most underground coal mines, their occurrence almost always requires a change in mining practice. Over the many years of dealing with these hazards, specialized requirements for layouts and novel extraction sequences have been developed on a site specific basis. The keys to mitigating risks are to properly assess the coal burst hazards and to possess the knowledge and skills to prevent or remediate their occurrence.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

This paper summarizes the main achievements of our previous project entitled "Development of a technological system producing quality guaranteed fly-ash based binder". Furthermore, this study deals with the laboratory experience of lignite fly ash utilization for two different goals. On the one hand the fly ash was tested as a binder; on the other hand it was investigated as an underground mine backfill material. Considering the first goal, the utilization of a mixture of mechanically activated fly ash and lime for producing an independent binding composition has been assessed involving determination of relationship between the degree of activation of fly ash and the strength of the obtained concrete. The results confirmed that this hydraulic binder is suitable for construction of stabilization and capping layers or base layer. Regarding the backfilling application, this paper presents laboratory experiments, their results including settling tests, hydraulic permeability and strength measurements and dense slurry technology related results.

K.A. Grace's article advocates usage of the terms describing resources as defined by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Originally recommended in 1943, the terms were revised in 1976 and again in 1980. Mr. Grace further recommends that the term reserves should be severely restricted and that it should encompass mining and processing factors. The list of references quoted in the article does not, however, mention the study concerning reserves that was made over a period of almost four years by a joint Committee on Definitions. This committee was sponsored by three societies - the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Most of the detailed work was done by a working party appointed by the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. After studying previous definitions in the US as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and other European countries, the following definitions were proposed and accepted in 1974 by the SME board of directors. (Ore reserve definitions in Rhodesia, South Africa, or New Zealand were not mentioned as having been reviewed.) Table 1 lists definitions from MINING ENGINEERING, July 1975. Notice in Table 1 it was mentioned, under Resources, that the definitions of reserves were recommended for the purposes of commercial evaluation. It was further stated that the terminology adopted by the USBM and the USGS, as released to the public, covering resources, was recognized as such. Mr. Grace also recommends that reserve calculations should allow for future losses in ore tonnage, ore grade, milling, and smelting. Unfortunately, it might take years to develop a prospect after it has been discovered. Mining methods have to be tested before being finalized in order to know what tonnage of ore is going to be lost, or how much dilution is likely to occur. The same problems are present in concentrating or in smelting. Operating mines usually know how mined grade compares with ore reserve grade. They can usually predict fairly closely what their final metal recoveries are probably going to be. It is, however, expecting too much to have to delay quoting reserves from say a recently drilled prospect. Any responsible mining geologist or mining engineer (or company for that matter) should state several things about an ore reserve calculation: that it is or is not a preliminary estimate only; that estimated grades have not been diluted to allow for a future, as yet unknown, mining method; that metal recoveries are or are not only tentative, based perhaps on drill hole samples only or on no metallurgical testing at all. Reserves of a partially explored prospect are always quoted when it becomes necessary to raise capital. If they are described as preliminary only (really just tonnage and grade estimates and not true "reserves") in addition to being accompanied by some of the items just mentioned, nobody is going to be misled. If, on the other hand, a report by a member of the SME or SEG is intentionally misleading, the individual must be reported and eventually disbarred from his or her society. To summarize, let us stay with the definitions of ore, ore reserves, and related terms as recommended and accepted by SME. I might add that on occasion I have used a fourth category in my ore reserve calculations, namely Geologically Possible Ore. This category is more or less the same as Inferred ore defined by the USBM and USGS. I have never given a grade to this category, which may be based only on geological mapping, geochemical sampling, or geophysical traversing.

THE MAGNITUDE of the anthracite industry's drainage problem in the Lackawanna River drainage area is realized when it is known that in 1948 the 27 pumping plants in this region pumped over 48 billion gallons of water to the surface from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin of the Northern field. This is almost 92,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of over 300 feet for that year. By comparison, Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest artificial body of water lying wholly in Pennsylvania, contains 71 billion gallons of water in its 24-square-mile area: the volume of water pumped from the mines in the Lackawanna Basin during 1948 was approximately 68 percent of that impounded in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Lackawanna. River and its tributaries drain a troughlike area of 345 square miles. The synclinal axis of this trough lies within the coal measures. All surface drainage into the valley must traverse some part of the coal measures. On the basis of 45.03 inches of rainfall recorded by the Scranton station of the United States Weather Bureau for 1948, the runoff from the Lackawanna River drainage area during that period was 135 billion gallons, approximately three times the volume of water pumped by all mine pumping plants in the Lackawanna. In other, words because of the pervious condition of the strata overlying the mine workings, approximately one-third of the total runoff in the Lackawanna River drainage area becomes mine water. This report, reveals that less than 7 percent of the 72 miles of pervious stream beds examined between Archbald and Pittston have been unproved.

The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

These stress fields may be.. reproduced on a scaled model of the structure byproportionally increasing the gravity field through the use of a centrifuge. This technology canthen be used to assess the vulnerability of various geotechnical structures to explosive loading.Applications of this technology include assessing the effectiveness of earth penetrating weapons,evaluating the vulnerability of various structures, counter-terrorism, and model validation. Thisdocument describes the development of expertise in scale model explosive testing ongeotechnical structures using Sandia’s large scale centrifuge facility. This study focused onburied structures such as hardened storage bunkers or tunnels. Data from this study was used toevaluate the predictive capabilities oft existing hydrocodes and structural dynamics codesdeveloped at Sandia National Laboratories (such as Pronto/SPH, Pronto/CTH, and ALEGRA)."
