A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob.

In an attempt to develop a suitable precast concrete support for underground use, two different models (1955 and 1958) of a five-piece concrete set were designed, fabricated, and tested under adverse loading conditions. Model 1955 was designed to withstand an ultimate, uniformly distributed, vertical load equivalent to what a three-piece, 12- by 12-inch wood set of intermediate-grade Douglas fir would withstand. A design figure of 138,000 pounds for the vertical load was used on both the 1955 and 1958 models. In addition, the 1958 model was designed to withstand a uniform horizontal load of 7,000 pounds per foot and additional concentrated-point loading. The step- by-step design of each model is presented in the appendixes. A series of five destruction tests was conducted underground on the 1955 model, and results of the tests showed that the type and method of blocking were of major significance.

Bateman Modular (previously Van Eck and Lurie) has been building and supplying the mining industry with modular DMS plants for the last 30 years. These DMS modules range in capacity from 1 tph to 200 tph. The most popular unit produced by Bateman Modular over the years has been the 50 tph module. Development In the last 7 years a need has arisen from the industry to provide Modular DMS plants that can treat higher tonnages (150 to 200 tph). The first DMS provided to the mining industry based on the modular concept was a 150 tph DMS Module to MIBA in the DRC. Since then Bateman Modular has provided some 14 Mega DMS modules over the last 7 years with the latest two orders from Debswana (Damtshaa double up project) and Namdeb. Ever since the first Mega Module was supplied Bateman Modular has been improving the Modules. Implementation The modules can be supplied in different configurations so as to improve the overall availability of the plant. Two off 150 tph DMS modules were supplied for a Transhex operation. This allowed the client to still operate one DMS module while maintenance is being performed on the other DMS module. The client also has the option of choosing a single module. Successes The following list of projects provides the base for the success of the Mega Modules.

The mineral industry in India is an important contributor to the country?s GDP and foreign trade, and also a significant source of employment generation. The industry is distributed almost all across the country and has operations in some of the remotest areas, where it has also served as a sole source of infrastructure development. India produces 89 minerals, out of which four are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals. The mining leases are occupying about 0.21% of the total land mass of the country. Indian mining industry is characterized by a large number of small operational mines (approx 3000 mines). Appropriate systems have been put in place to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, which include formulation of procedures for scientific prospecting and mining and development of a mechanism of prior environmental and forest clearances for mining projects. Main emphasis is to protect the health and safety of mine workers, as well as to safeguard the interests of indigenous people through rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Efforts are under way to mainstream the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in order to promote equity in the mining industry. The issue of scientific closure and reclamation of the abandoned mine sites poses a major challenge. Present paper illustrated several initiatives have been taken in this direction along with case studies, which could be replicated in other parts of the country.

Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time.

"Over the years many differing approaches have been developed to clearly understand the nature, mode of occurrence, associations and deportment of both free-milling and refractory gold in a wide variety of differing geologic environments and plant products. Many approaches can be taken to characterize the ore which may occur as complex fine grained gold, ultra-fine grained gold, coarse nuggetty gold, complex Asrich refractory gold and double-refractory gold. The approach taken in assessing small drill core composites from Novo Resources Beaton Creek Paleoplacer gold project located in the Pilbara region of Australia was complicated by the nature of the ore, the small amount of sample available from current exploration work, and the gold grade and the grain size distribution. In this case the scope of the study was limited by sample availability although significant amounts of valuable information was also gained. This gold characterization study included the following elements:??Size fraction assays??Ore microscopy??Preparation of heavy mineral concentrates from sized fractions (screening) of crushed or milled head using heavy liquids and Superpan table.??Systematic scans of the heavy mineral concentrate, middling, and tailing fractions using TIMA Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy integrated with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry to provide semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the individual grains found in the sample.The unique methodology employed to detail the gold deportment was the combination of the Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) and the Oxford INCA GSR software. This technique not only allowed us to document the deportment of gold but recognize other associated minerals, which included gersdorffite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and several Rare Earth-bearing minerals.INTRODUCTIONGold deportment studies are commonly carried out on preliminary gold exploration projects in order to determine the various limitations, which may effect processing of the potential ore. This is often because it may be expected that there may be a refractory component to the gold, which may limit physical separation techniques and suggest more costly hydrometallurgical techniques. Often when carrying out gold deportment studies the mineralogical methods may be limited to assuming that the gold will be fine and easily found using standard techniques of optical microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy. This may not always be the case as various geological environments may pose their own individual problems to determining the deportment of the gold grains."

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. Advanced technology, including automation and computerized information systems, is being adopted in mining at an ever-increasing rate to improve safety and productivity and to decrease overall costs. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report focuses on the human factors issues related to advanced technology. Among the significant facts discovered were the following: Experts studying tile design adoption, and implementation of new technology have stated repeatedly that human factors specialists should be involved from the early planning stages, through design and fabrication, and up to and during production, since human factors has been consistently identified as the biggest obstacle to the efficient utilization of new technology. Also, middle management is generally the greatest obstacle to the adoption of advanced technology, this technology can give rise to worker alienation, boredom, stress, job insecurity, and a sense of isolation; training most of the present work force is more cost effective than hiring new workers; workers are willing to accept new technology if they are given a voice in its implementation; the social and the technical systems should be jointly optimized; and with the intro¬duction of advanced technology, the cognitive or mental, rather than the physical, aspects of human-machine interaction must be emphasized.

The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage-, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation. The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation With the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects. The work was under the immediate direction of W. T. Schrenk, consulting chemist, United States Bureau of Mines, and professor of chemistry Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and. Will H. "Silver and gold leaching by cyanidation is a well-known process used around the world. This reaction is often accompanied by the leaching of other species throughtout the cyanidation circuit that causes the diversion of cyanide towards non valuable by-products (SCN-, Cu(CN)x, Fe(CN)x, etc.). One of the detrimental impacts of the formation of these by-products is the precipitation of silver-cyanide complexes that occurs when cyanide concentration is too low. Without any extra-addition of free cyanide, the precipitated silver is lost and cannot be recovered causing an important economic loss. To overcome silver precipitation, cyanidation circuits are often operated at higher cyanide concentrations. Recently, COREM’s research team has been working on a technology to measure and control silver precipitation during the cyanidation process. Moreover, a methodology has been elaborated in order to evaluate threshold cyanide level which corresponds to the cyanide concentration at which silver starts to precipitate. This technology has been tested on site on a real cyanidation circuit at Agnico Eagle’s LaRonde mine."

Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

Overexposure to noise remains a widespread and serious health hazard in the U.S. service providing and goods producing industries. Excessive noise can lead to poor verbal communication and reduce the ability to recognize warning signals. These dangerous work conditions can also cause stress and fatigue. Occupational hearing loss is a permanent illness, with no recovery currently possible. Method: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recognized Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) as one of the ten leading work related diseases and injuries in the United States, and has emphasized its importance as one of the critical areas expressed in the National Occupational Research Agenda. Results: One of the most serious noise problems in the goods producing industries is the operation of continuous mining machines during underground coal mining. In order to minimize occupational hearing loss, noise hazards are “designed out” early in the design process. NIOSH is leading a national initiative called Prevention through Design (PTD) to promote this concept. This paper describes the quiet by design approach of a noise control that reduced noise exposures of continuous mining machine operators by 3dB(A) using the four functional areas of PTD, namely Practice, Policy, Research, and Education.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. This paper details the sustainable approach to the Carmen Copper tailings thickener upgrade, where metallurgical performance, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact were key considerations.CITATION:Morgan, S, Mackie, H, Maloloy-on, C and Deiparine, M, 2015. The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it's easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don't have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you're going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you're attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I'm straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It's a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don't get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I'm estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.

Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

"Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shota, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer sirndation in surface coal mining is fairly recent.
