"Many problems in rock mechanics are limited by our imperfect knowledge of the material properties and failure mechanics of rock masses. Mining problems are somewhat unique, however, in that plenty of real world experience is generally available and can be turned into valuable experimental data. Every pillar that is developed, or stope that is mined, represents a full-scale test of a rock mechanics design. By harvesting these data, and then using the appropriate statistical techniques to interpret them, mining engineers have developed powerful design techniques that are widely used around the world. Successful empirical methods are readily accepted because they are simple, transparent, practical, and firmly tethered to reality.The author has been intimately associated with empirical design for his entire career. But where his past papers have described the application of individual techniques to specific problems, the focus of this paper is the process used to develop a successful empirical method. A six-stage process is described:1. Identification of the problem, and of the end users of the final product2. Development of a conceptual rock mechanics model, and identification of the key parameters in that model3. Identification of measures for each of the key parameters, and the development of new measures (such as rating scales) where necessary4. Data sources and data collection5. Statistical analysis6. Packaging of the final productEach of these stages has its own potential rewards and pitfalls, which will be illustrated by incidents from the author’s own experience. The ultimate goal of this paper is to provide a new and deeper appreciation for empirical techniques, as well as some guidelines and opportunities for future developers."

Fossil fuel consumption in the United States increased markedly over recent years, and future demands expect to be even greater. Coal, this Nation's most plentiful natural fossil fuel, will play a key role in fulfilling these demands. With expectations of increased coal exploitation, the U. S. Bureau of Mines authorized this project, the objectives of whi.ch were to prepare an authoritative report on current surface coal mining technology, to define current problems and possible solutions, and to project future developments necessary to assure adequate surfaced mined coal production to meet the Nation's future energy needs. These objectives we're accomplished by an extensive review of available published literature and data gathering field visits to active surface coal mines throughout the country.

Geotechnical Baseline Reports often estimate the number of cobbles that will be encountered in terms of volume or weight. These estimates are practically impossible to verify in the field. ClaroVia Holdings in conjunction with Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. developed Digital Geologist 2.0 to classify and count cobbles discharged from an EPB TBM at the RSC7 project in Burbank, CA. The system worked by using two stereoscopic laser sensors with a global shutter to scan and count cobbles at 12 frames per second. Results of the effort are revealed along with lessons learned and paths for improvement.

Major producers posted 25¢-per-pound increases on cadmium, raising their domestic quotes to $2.75 per pound. COBALT: Cobalt consumption in February, exclusive of salts and driers, increased by 21 percent compared with consumption in January. Significant increases in consumption occurred in cutting and wear resistant materials, welding and alloy hard-facing rods and materials, magnetic alloys, and other alloys. The major sales agency for cobalt in New York reportedly announced price increases, effective April 15, 1976, for cobalt metal, powders, and oxide. The new price for 250 kilo (551 lb.) drums of cobalt metal (granules or electrolytic cathodes), f.o.b. Port of New York, was quoted at $4.40 per pound. This is the first cobalt price increase since January 23, 1975, and is the result of a price increase by Sozacom, the official Zairian sales agent. Other cobalt producers are expected to raise their prices in line with the new quote.

Current trends into mining iron ore have seen an increase in the exploitation of problematic orebodies that would typically be disregarded. These bulk materials cause problems within all facets of the material handling stream, from remains left in train wagons to transfer chute blockages, which can cause costly downtime to mining operations (Roberts, 1998). These problematic bulk materials are referred to as wet and sticky material (WSM) due to the adhesive and cohesive nature they possess. Their characteristics can be computationally expensive to model. With the development of discrete element modelling (DEM), in conjunction with advancement in computational power over the past decade, it is now more feasible to model WSMs into the DEM technique.This research will couple two different contact models that can represent the characteristics of a WSM. These models include the Simplified Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (SJKR) and the Easo liquid bridging contact models. The SJKR contact model is an expanded form of the classic Hertz model. This model includes the tensile forces that are in the contact zone between two bodies when they are separated, which the Hertz model failed to capture (Johnson, Kendall and Roberts, 1971). The Easo liquid bridging contact model accounts for the capillary effects and surface tension that will form between two bodies, such as that of a WSM (Soulié et al, 2006). Both of these models were coupled to give the best representation of a WSM, which was simulated using MoleculeX™ (Chen and Williams, 2017) as the software platform.Additionally, this research also investigated the adhesion of problematic iron ore samples onto impact plates under dynamic conditions. An experimental set-up consisting of an apron feeder and inclined impact plate was utilised, to gain an understanding of the way the material builds-up and the possible modes of failure that could be experienced. This was undertaken for different wall liner materials, wall liner angles and moisture contents of the iron ore samples. From this, a series of DEM calibration simulations were conducted on the experimental set-up and particle size distributions (PSD) of the iron ore samples. "It has long been recognized that mining workers subjected to high levels of hand-transmitted vibration may suffer from vibration-related complaints. Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration may also result in adverse effects. In this study, the effects of vibration on mining workers are examined. Previous work documenting the occurrence of vibration-related disease is reviewed. From this work, it is apparent that operators of hand-held pneumatic rock drills are exposed to a significant risk of developing vibration disease. Vibration levels recorded on the rock drills now in use are presented and shown to exceed levels recommended by a proposed ISO standard.IntroductionThe possible harmful effects of exposure to excessive vibration levels have long been recognized, particularly among operators of hand-held tools. Numerous cases have been reported of a vasospastic disorder commonly known as vibration white finger disease (VWFD), which was a term coined by the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in Scotland in 1970(1 ), Those suffering with the disorder have frequent vasospastic attacks in which the fingers, hand and, in advanced cases, the lower arm turn white and numb, usually after a cold stimulus. Advanced stages of VWFD have been reported in which the skin becomes ulcerated and gangrenousm. The incidence of the disease has been particularly serious in the forest industry due to the extensive use of chain saws. However, in recent years, the introduction of antivibration saws has resulted in a significant reduction in the occurrence of the disease.In a recent report for the Canadian Department of Supply and Services - Energy, Mines and Resources, Hutton & Brubaker considered the effects of vibration on workers in the mining industry. In this report, the physiological and medical effects of vibration were considered, relevant vibration standards were discussed, previous vibration measurements were documented and field measurements carried out. In the present paper, the results recorded in this study will be summarized, together with results that have been previously published relating to vibration levels existing in the mining industry."

On July 1, the Bonneville Power Administration announced a 25% power cutback because of lower than normal stream flow. In September, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down one 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., primary aluminum smelter. Alcoa also announced that the last of four potlines at its Point Comfort, Tex., primary aluminum smelter would be restarted in October. A new 3-year contract was signed and workers at three Alcan Aluminum Ltd. primary aluminum smelters in Canada returned to work. It was estimated that it would take about 3 months before the smelters were operating at full capacity.

This report summarizes a systematic 20-year study of the organic sulfur compounds in Wasson, Texas, crude oil and, to a lesser extent, of three other crude oils, that has culminated in some 200 individual sulfur-compound identifications. The development and application of special separation and identification techniques generally suitable for the characterization of sulfur compounds in any crude oil are discussed. This report reviews early sulfur literature covering petroleum sulfur compound identifications completed before this study was begun, and cites 58 papers resulting from this work. The sulfur compounds in petroleum, both as to type and quantity, have long been of concern to the petroleum industry, and such compositional data are not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical value.

Siendo la veta principal San Cristóbal, una de las estructuras que atraviesan el Anticlinal Chumpe en la provincia de Yauli, su explotación ha sido limitada a las rocas volcánicas y filitas en el flanco sur-oeste del anticlinal. Por tal motivo, el texto señala que el análisis de la distribución de los metales y minerales dentro de la veta, revela un zoneamiento horizontal bien definido, que es compatible con el origen de las soluciones hidrotermales en el centro del anticlinal. Asimismo, este estudio cuantitativo determina las características de las partes ricas de la veta, trazando líneas de contornos de los cuatro tipos de metal en secciones longitudinales, como los controles de la distribución de metal y relaciona las áreas ricas de la veta con su medio geológico. De otro lado, en San Cristóbal, la distribución del metal presenta una característica zonal donde la paragénesis y el zoneamiento están íntimamente relacionados. Concluyéndose que con la aplicación de los resultados de este estudio, se permitirá una mejor exploración y desarrollo de las áreas ricas de la Veta Principal San Cristóbal y se proporcionará una guía útil para la exploración y desarrollo de vetas paralelas en esta área.

"THE Mattagami district of Quebec has, during the past few years, experienced intense exploration by virtually every mining company operating in Canada. As a result of this activity, a number of well-mineralized zinc-copper bearing bodies have been found, some of which will almost certainly go into production. Much of the area has undergone what is now termed ""Saturation Prospecting"" or intense and detailed geological and geophysical surveying, followed by the drilling of nearly all possible bets. Considering only the airborne geophysical surveying, some blocks of ground have been flown by virtually every geophysical instrument which has to date been installed in an aircraft. A list of these different geophysical instruments would include: l. Fluxgate-type total field magnetometers 2. Vertical field magnetometer ,3. Nuclear-precession magnetometers 4. Single-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 5. Dual-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 6. Horizontal component measuring electromagnetometers 7. Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

The uptake of zinc, lead, and copper by the flora of the Tui Base Mine area near Te Aroha is described.Vegetation and soil samples were taken from two traverses across the Raukaka Lode. Results. after statistical analysis, indicated that Beilschmiedia tawa was a suitable species for biogeochemical prospecting for lead and that SchefJlera digitata was satisfactory for zinc.The tawa showed a negative anomaly for lead over the vein itself but not over the adjacent dispersion halo. It was concluded that lead concentrations greater than 230 p.p.m. in the wood ash of the tawa and zinc concentrationsgreater than 540 p.p.m. in the leaf ash of S. digitata denoted threshold values for anomalous mineralization in the soil beneath. Although both species contained copper, neither indicated a soil anomaly for this element.

The South African based platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3 depending upon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40-42% Cr2O3. However it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.

The contract objectives are (1) to develop safe practice guidelines which will minimize the chance of fires in underground fueling areas and (2) to develop a low-cost, reliable, automatic fire protection system for underground fueling areas. The effort described by this report covers the period from 21 June 1976 to 30 September 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Preparation of Data Plan and Data Acquisition, mainly through visits to sixteen mine sites and a literature survey. ? Analysis of the accumulated data, providing design inputs for (a) evaluation of the fire problem; (b) development of safe practice guidelines; and (c) development of recommended design concepts for automatic fire protection systems. ? Preparation of safe practice guidelines for underground fueling areas. ? Preparation of recommended design concepts for automatic fire protection systems for underground fueling areas. ? Design and fabrication of fire protection system for installation at Pine Creek Mine, Bishop, California. ? Install system and perform underground fire tests at Pine Creek Mine.

THE need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. WASHABILITY STUDIES The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money, can hardly be spent on "feed surveys" to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus.
