INTRODUCTION Phosphatic resources may be quantified in terms of ore tons and phosphate analyses; however, to quantify phosphate reserves it is necessary to estimate the tons and quality of phosphate rock that can be extracted from the ore. The yield and grade of phosphate rock that can recovered from sedimentary phosphate deposits are usually difficult to estimate because of variations in stratigraphy and/or mineralogy. Prospecting phosphorite ores for purposes of estimating reserves and preparing mine plans requires considerably more effort than defining ore thickness and P205 content. In Florida, for example, it is standard practice to prospect by core drilling and to subject each strata (split) to beneficiation testing, and to perform detailed chemical analyses on the beneficiated products from each strata. For a completed drilling pattern the area of influence of each hole is 2.5 acres. The number of strata per drill hole typically varies from two to five, and thus complete prospecting of a 40acre tract requires drilling 16 core holes and beneficiation testing of about 48 ore samples. Florida practice is not appropriate for all phosphorite deposits. Functional drill rigs and trained drillers may not be readily available. Water for core drilling may be unavailable and the characteristics of either the overburden or ore may require careful attention and excessive cost to obtain representative core samples. Alternate ore sampling methods include auger drilling, rotary drilling to obtain cuttings, and the excavation of trenches, pits, and shafts. Drill cuttings samples are generally the least expensive to obtain, but they are usually unsuitable for beneficiation testing because of particle size reduction during drilling. Ore samples from surface trenches and pits are expensive and may not be representative of deeper ore. Ore samples from shafts are the most expensive to obtain, but if taken properly they are reliable for use in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Regardless of the prospecting technique used, reliable estimates of the yield and grade of phosphate rock that can be extracted from an ore deposit are required: • to justify capital expenditures for a new mine • for mine design and mine planning • for beneficiation plant design • for production forecasts, quality control, and marketing. This paper describes models that predict the beneficiation response of ores from three phosphate ore deposits. The purpose of these models is to obtain maximum utilization of available prospect data with the least cost. ORE DEPOSITS Simple beneficiation models have been developed for ores from three sedimentary phosphate deposits around the Mediterranean area. The first deposit, herein described as "A" ore, is located north of the Mediterranean Sea. The second deposit, designated as "B" ore, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, while the third deposit, "C" ore, is located south of the Mediterranean Sea. Ore "C" is from the Sra Ouertane deposit in northwestern Tunisia.

Bentonite is a common name applied to a variety of clays that develope swelling properties when associated with water. Useful bentonite deposits occur in many Western and Southern states. Their origins may consist of the alteration of volcanic sediments or the decomposition of shallow lake deposits. The specific type of bentonite that will be discussed in this review will be only the Western or high swelling sodium type bentonite that is mined primarily in Wyoming. Wyoming bentonite first entered the market in the late 1880's when it was used as an oil absorbing cosmetic. In the 1920's it was discovered that superior binding properties were present which created new opportunities in pharmaceutical, animal feed, and steel foundries. The swelling properties that were exhibited by the high swelling Wyoming bentonites soon led to its use in oil exploration when the rotary drilling process developed a need for multipurpose fluids. Bentonites in general and Wyoming bentonite in particular have fascinated chemists and process development specialists since the 1920's. There exists a long list of industrial uses that has led to hundreds of patents and extensive literature reviews. The binding and swelling properties are developed as a result of large surface areas and high cation exchange properties. Water, being a di polar molecule, attaches to the ionic vacancies and forms a network of tightly held water particles which in turn produces an impermeable seal or a binding characteristic in unconsolidated powder. Newer uses for Wyoming bentonite that once again utilized the binding and swelling properties include the pelletizing of iron ore and a vast array of civil engineering applications including slurry trenching, lagoon sealing, and garbage landfill sealing.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

Mining companies have been very interested in the presence of a number of small but high-grade ore bodies of base metals in northern Wisconsin and the west/central section of the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. The region is rural with outdoor recreation/tourism and lumbering being the key industries. The economy of the region is based on the use of its natural resources, and mining is not a new activity to the region, especially the UP. The western UP was historically a key mining district for copper and iron, and today the central UP has a significant iron-mining district. However, all efforts to develop the base metal ore bodies have been met with a storm of controversy involving the local community, regional activists, Native Americans, and the state government, and only one mine has gone into operation. There is concern by some stakeholders about the sustainability of mining in communities that depend on the environment for tourism, recreation, and other commercial activities. There have been four attempts to get the necessary approvals to mine in this region: the successful Flambeau Mine effort (Wisconsin), the failed Crandon project (Wisconsin) and Lynne project (Wisconsin) efforts, and the continuing effort to get the Eagle Project (UP of Michigan) approved. The cases are presented to illustrate the project situation, the history of the permitting effort, and the opposing parties and their concerns. The case of the Eagle Project is looked at in detail by using the method of discourse communities and discourse analysis. Results of the analysis provide insight into the communication efforts to address community concerns about sustainability and what more can be done to improve this dialogue.

The Bethlehem Mines Corp. is a captive mining subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp. Its coal production is tied to the demands for and production of steel, a situation that has to balance between the following two extreme strategies: (1) either the mines are designed and operated for some optimum production level and the demand fluctuations within the steel corporation are met by supplementary corporate coal sales and purchases, or (2) the mines absorb all the demand fluctuations, regardless of the effects on mine costs. A rational definition of the best strategy between these extremes is, of course, needed but is very difficult to formulate in view of the complexity of the many factors that would have to be included in the analysis. Consequently, rather than setting profit targets for each given mining division and/or individual mine, the practice evolved to set production targets for producing specified tonnages of coking coal for shipments to the ovens located at the corporation's iron and steelmaking plants. This in turn leaves the mines with the dilemma of having to explain demand-related cost-per-ton fluctuations while essentially depriving them of the ability to control profit through tonnage optimization. In the early 1970's, the coal prices rose significantly, while other factors led to sagging productivity in underground coal mining. Thus, the role of Bethlehem's coal operations in the corporate profit picture gained in relative importance. This, in turn, sparked a closer attention to the coal mining cost structure and factors controlling productivity. At the same time, the drastic increase in the capital needed to open a new mine also increased the amount of planning required to minimize risks. All of this called for more well-defined, quantitative operating data. Bethlehem therefore launched, in the early 1970's, a number of innovative steps that, as the future may show, represented pioneering contributions to the growing sophistication of North American underground coal mine planning and management control practices. This case study describes the changes that led to the current implementation of a novel production reporting system at Bethlehem's coal mines. These changes took place in two distinctly different phases. The current system that resulted from the Phase II developments utilizes, of course, experience gained earlier and is expected to be amplified to incorporate more advanced concepts and technology as future experience dictates.

The production of crushed stone in the United States has exceeded 1.0 Gtpy since 1987. Eighty percent of the crushed stone produced is used in the aggregate industry, accounting for over half of the quantity of natural aggregate consumed in the United States. Approximately 718 of the crushed stone produced in 1989 was limestone and dolomite followed by granite, traprock, sandstone and quartzite, miscellaneous stone, marble, shell, calcareous marl, volcanic cinder and scoria, and slate in order of descending volume (Table 1). Of the remaining 20% crushed stone produced in the United States and not used as aggregate, 12% is used in the manufacture of cement which is an important construction material. Only 8% of crushed stone is used in specialty products not associated with the construction industry. Therefore, this chapter will concentrate on crushed stone as used in aggregates, with occasional reference to other uses or to chapters which discuss specific nonconstruction uses of crushed stone. Construction aggregates are hard, essentially inert materials suitable for being formed into a stable mass by the addition of cementing or binding materials that produce a concrete by compaction, or by natural weight to produce a road or foundation fill. Aggregates are usually from 80 to 100% of the material volume of the construction masses in which they are used. Conditions necessary for a rock deposit to be developed for construction crushed stone include: Quality-should pass rigid specifications for strength and durability; Quantity-adequate volume of rock is needed to have a production life of at least 10 years, preferably 20 or more years; Market-must have adequate market to support a new crushed stone operation; Transportation-transportation cost must be competitive for the intended market; Environmental-the impacts of mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone on the environment at or surrounding the mine site must be within acceptable limits; Permitability-mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone must usually be permitted by governing agency. The following discussion will touch upon all facets of crushed stone operations from the mineral deposit and its geology to technology, uses, economic factors and end with governmental regulations of mining crushed stone. The sections are not designed to answer all questions, but rather to be an introduction to the crushed stone industry. Where more information is required, The Aggregate Handbook by Barksdale (1991) is recommended as the best general source.

INTRODUCTION In exploration for rock tunnels, the geology should not only be described, but its effect on excavation and support assessed. It is not an easy task to correlate exploration results with support and excavation requirements, even when the exploration program is detailed and geologic conditions are relatively well known. Many of the significant geologic features are subtle and their effect is difficult to interpret from exploration results. However, in similar geologic settings, there are specific geologic features which will cause recurring support problems. Such features should be actively sought out when exploring in a given geologic setting. In blocky and seamy rock, the primary features controlling performance are the joints, shears, and shear zones. This paper describes the effect of such features on the formation and movement of rock wedges in tunnels driven in foliated metamorphic rocks in Washington, D. C. and New York City. In both areas the foliation commonly forms a N-S striking plane of weakness along which major shear zones, shears, and joints have formed. In addition, the structural history of the two areas has been similar, so that there are similarities in the orientation and character of the other major joint sets and shear zones in the rock mass. The observations were made in tunnels ranging from 10 to 70 ft in width and excavated at depths ranging from 80 to 800 ft. Most of the tunnels described were deep enough to be located in unweathered rock, or in rock only slightly weathered along joints and shears. In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

Activated carbons used for precious metal recovery from carbon-in­pulp (CIP), carbon-In-leach (CIL) and carbon-in-column (CIC) circuits often become fouled with Inorganic precipitates (i.e., CaCOa, CaS04, SI02), and adsorbed organics (I.e., petroleum distillates from lubricants, dissolution products from wood) (1,2). These contaminants occlude carbon pore structure, such that diffusion controlled adsorption and desorption (elution) of Au(CN)2-and Ag(CN)2· are lmpeded(3,4l. Thus, after only short exposure to the hydrometallurgical environment, the characteristic carbon activity is reduced(5l. By frequently regenerating circuit carbons, activity losses associated with fouling can usually be minimized. Regeneration typically Involves (not necessarily Is this order): 1) elution to remove adsorbed ionic species (e.g., until they are removed from the carbon pore structure, Au(CN)2" and Ag(CN)2-are contaminants )(6l; 2) acid washing with 3-15% (wt/wt) hydro­chloric acid, to dissolve soluble Inorganic precipitates such as CaC03; 3) neutralization and/or water rinsing to remove residual acid; 4) thermal regeneration at 350-650 °C to remove adsorbed and/or pyrolyzed organ­ics; and 5) screening to remove fine carbon particles produced by Impaction and abrasion in the various stages of the hydrometallurgical circuit (i.e., adsorption, elution, and regeneration). The overall process Is purposed to reopen the circuit carbon pore structure, and to maintain the activity and qualities of virgin (new) carbon(7,8l. While most CIP, CIL and CIC operators regenerate circuit carbons, few evaluate the effect of the process on carbon quality in a systematic way. Process control usually Involves Iterating critical regeneration parameters such as: acid concentration; time frames for acid washing and water rinsing; and temperature and residence time for thermal regeneration. Carbon quality control frequently comprises only sporadic activity tests performed on non-representative grab samples dipped from conve­niently accessed carbon storage bins. So, regenerated carbon quality may vary and (at times) be unacceptable for effective hydrometallurglcal circuit operation. To verify the efficacy of the regeneration process and assure accept­able adsorption and elution rates for Au(CN)2· and Ag(CN)2·, operators should systematically assess regenerated circuit carbon quality. This paper, then, suggests methods for effectively assessing circuit carbon quality, Including: carbon sampling procedures; standardized physical and chemical test methods; and criteria and general procedures for comparative adsorption rate (activity) testing. Also, a two tier quality control testing scheme is proposed, and techniques for presenting and interpreting test data are demonstrated.

Although gold's market price dropped considerably from 1980's all time high, exploration for the precious metal remained a particularly bright spot last year, especially in the western US. For example, in Nevada-the nation's largest gold producer-further exploratory drilling at Louisiana Land & Explorations Co.'s deposit at Round Mountain and Newmont Mining Corp.'s find near Carlin resulted in sharp boosts in estimated reserves at both sites. Louisiana Land said its deposit is well on the way to being one of the largest gold reserves in the US. Based on further drilling, Newmont said its Gold Quarry property near Carlin could now produce 4.7-6.2 t/a (150,000-200,000 oz/ year). Reserves at Newmont's two properties near Carlin and a third property in southeast California are reportedly at least 218 t (7 million oz), up from the previously announced 128 t (4.1 million oz). Gold exploration activities were brisk in many other states, including a noticeable effort to explore and reopen dormant properties. Although the return on investments didn't appear as favorable last year as they did in 1980, the gold price was apparently sufficient to spur healthy exploration activity. Outside precious metals, market conditions, and subsequent exploration activity, appeared much more bleak. In the molybdenum market, for example, prices continued to slide, and Amax Inc. tightened its exploration budget. (Amax supplies 60% of the domestic market and 45% of the world demand for molybdenum.) The company spent 16% less on exploration during the first six months in 1981, compared to the same period in 1980. Copper and many other base metal producers appeared in similar straits throughout the year. Uranium exploration activities continued to suffer last year also due to depressed market conditions. Among others, Gulf Minerals Resources and Amoco Minerals Co. suspended uranium exploration activities in the West. Despite current unfavorable conditions, some companies continue uranium searches, confident that market conditions will rebound. On a brighter note, interest in exploring for some industrial and strategic minerals appeared on the upswing last year. Minerals used for oil and gas drilling, such as barite and special sands, were especially noteworthy. In geophysical activity, significant developments were achieved for electromagnetic techniques in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Geophysical logging activity declined due to decreased uranium exploration, and computer hardware continued to impact the way mining geophysical data are being acquired. Many presentations and papers were given last year to help exploration geochemists develop new techniques to locate concealed ore bodies. Among techniques described were statistical and computer modeling for enhancing anomalies over blind deposits.

INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. More than 100,000 residents of Springfield and surrounding communities live on karst (sinkhole) terrain on the Springfield Plateau in southwestern Missouri. The city occupier much of the headwaters area of Wilson Creek basin, which is underlain by the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian), a cavernous, massively bedded formation averaging 150 feet in thickness. Sinkholes, some as deep as 75 feet, pock-mark the uplands. Stony red residual clay mantles the pinnacled limestone bedrock. Surface water lost to sinkholes and losing reaches of upstream areas resurges in springs and estevellas (reversible sinkholes) in the lower reaches of Wilson Creek. The Springfield Southwest Treatment Plant, an activated sludge process sewage treatment facility, situated about mid-basin at the confluence of Wilson Creek and a tributary, South Creek, serves the entire city. Effluent from the treatment plant together with industrial, street-wash and other waste from the-headwaters of the basin have degraded both surface and ground water quality in much of the Wilson Creek watershed. The area affected includes Wilson's Creek Battlefield National Park and recreational reaches of James River below the mouth of Wilson Creek.

I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts' work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. "The MINER Act requires the installation of post-accident, two-way communications and electronic tracking systems for all coal mines. One communication system which can satisfy this requirement is an electrode-based, through-the-earth (TTE) communication system, which sends signal directly through the overburden of a mine. The performance of these types of systems relies on several controlling factors such as earth conductivity, overburden depth, operating frequency, TX/RX antenna length, TX/RX offset, TX/RX orientation angle and TX current. In an effort to estimate attenuation through the earth, NIOSH researchers developed an analytic solution for the electrical field distribution of an electrode-based TTE communication system for the extremely low-frequency (ELF) range (< 30 Hz) or DC excitation source. The analytic model was then validated using test data measured at an operating coal mine. The validated model can be used to optimize the operating frequency, estimate the required transmitting current, choose appropriate TX/RX orientation, and predict the performance of an electrode-based TTE system at a coal mine. INTRODUCTION One of the requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 is the installation of post-accident, two-way communications and electronic tracking systems for all underground coal mines. As one of the through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication methods available for the mining industry, the electrode-based, or linear, TTE systems establish communication by inducing a current within the earth medium by use of a pair of current probes. The resultant current is detected as a voltage by a similar set of distant probes. These probes could be an insulated piece of wire tied to two electrodes grounded at distant ends, or the grounded ends could be rails, roof bolts, or grounded electric rods. The analytical solution developed in a homogenous half-space, for this form for various transmitter/receiver (TX/RX) configurations, will be presented in this paper. The communication signals can be sent either from underground to surface (uplink) or from surface to underground (downlink). In order to achieve a successful communication link, it is necessary to understand the electric fields within the earth so that the appropriate size of transmitting antenna, TX/RX relative orientation, and operating frequency can be chosen. Hill and Wait gave the explicit forms of partial magnetic fields and partial electric fields of electrode-based TTE downlink communication with finite cable length [1]. In prior research, the E-fields of electric line transmitter were obtained for a static TX current [2] [3]. In this paper, the general and explicit forms for electrode-based TTE electric fields are developed and presented. The solutions for the extremely low-frequency (ELF) range (< 30 Hz) or DC excitation source obtained from these forms are presented. Also, factors that affect the E-field strength at RX are discussed."

INTRODUCTION In 1960, coal accounted for 49% of the world energy consumption, an amount that was reduced to 29% in 1973 because of the availability of cheap oil. At that time, it seemed that oil would remain available for a long time in unlimited quantities. However, this situation changed drastically in 1973/74 when a series of closely spaced price increases from $3 per to $12 per bbl by mid-1974 hit both industrialized and developing countries. Another sharp price increase in 1979/80 to the $34 to $38 per bbl level also hit the world economy hard and, at the same time, set in motion powerful technology development forces for increased coal utilization. At this point, the price of coal was approximately $1.50 per MM Btu, while that of oil approached $6.00 per MM Btu. This huge price differential offered an incentive for developing new coal technologies including liquefaction, gasification, fluidized bed combustion, coal-water mixture (CWM), etc. The CWM technology was of particular interest to the utility industry, which consumes more than 80% of the coal mined in the US for power generation. In this technology, a powdered coal is mixed with water to produce a stable slurry that can be stored for an extended period of time without settling and is readily pumpable. Various reagents in the amount of approximately 1% by weight of the coal are added to inhibit sedimentation during storage and to reduce the viscosity for atomization in burners. The coal loading is in the range of 50 to 80% solids, depending on the particle size and its distribution. With very fine particles, it is difficult to increase the coal loading above 50%, and a binomial distribution helps increase the coal loading. The presence of water consumes a relatively small amount of the heating value of the coal during combustion; for a coal-water slurry containing 30% water, less than 5% of the calorific value of coal is usually consumed due to evaporation. The major advantage of burning coal as a slurry is that many of the oil-burning furnaces can be converted to coal-burning with a minimum retrofit cost. Considering the substantial price margin between coal and oil, the pay- back period for retrofit costs can be relatively short. Nevertheless, the retrofit cost can be further reduced if low-ash coals are used as feedstocks for CWM; there will be savings in the capital cost of installing bag filters or electrostatic precipitators that are designed to remove the ash from the combustion gases. Furthermore, the use of low-ash coals can minimize derating of boilers because the velocity of the combustion gases can be maximized without creating erosion

Introduction Economic pressures in the international marketplace have spurred advances in almost every facet of flotation. New developments have occurred in flotation chemicals, flotation machines, and in the application of automated process control technology to grinding and flotation. Many of these advances are the results of concerted efforts to apply the knowledge obtained from basic flotation research over the past 15 to 20 years, to develop industrial technology for the more efficient separation of sulfide minerals in real ores. Mining company executives and equipment manufacturers are being called on to make decisions for incorporating some of this technology into present operations. This discussion is limited to two developments now at the stage of being engineered into industrial scale operations. They are control of the electrochemical environment or redox potential of the slurry, and control of bubble size in column flotation. Potential economic impacts are noted. Froth flotation Froth flotation makes use of differences in the surface properties of finely ground minerals to obtain separation. If the mineral surface is water repellent, the mineral particle will stick at the air-water interface of a bubble and float. If a mineral surface is not naturally water repellent, a chemical collector is added to the slurry to make it so. The collector must adsorb on, and make water repellent only the mineral to be recovered, not the gangue minerals. To achieve this degree of selective adsorption, chemical modifiers may have to be added to the slurry. Modifiers include pH regulators, activators, and depressants. Electrochemical control One of the most significant developments in recent years in the area of mineral processing technology is the recognition that collector adsorption of sulfide minerals is an electrochemical process. Consequently, flotation of these minerals depends on the electrochemical or redox potential of the system.
