This is the eighth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for nearly 30 new entries. Several articles and publications have appeared recently that relate to mineral royalty or mineral valuation. R. B. Parsons wrote "Mining agreements, royalties and profits" (CIM Bulletin, November 1988). He distinguished between net smelter return (NSR) and net profit interest (NPI). Parsons used examples to show the difference between these royalty payment methods. Mining Engineering (January 1990) carried an article by H. V. S. Tingley entitled "Using business due diligence to help evaluate mineral deposits." The article identifies some factors that must be examined during mergers or acquisitions in the mining industry. Since each mining operation is unique, each has risks and opportunities that need recognition and evaluation. The author suggests that a team is necessary for a proper evaluation because no one person has expertise in all of the factors that must be examined. Also in January's Mining Engineering was "Limestone mining: Reserves and valuation," by B. C. Lewis and R. P. Moran. They presented two case studies of valuation of limestone reserves. One was a 109-hm2 (270-acre) parcel in West Virginia and the other a 121-hm2 (300-acre) tract in Alabama. The authors discussed risk, discount rates, and royalty methods as financial parameters in valuation of limestone reserves. A fire in a coal mine conveyor belt entry represent a major safety and health risk to miners. Fighting belt entry fires can be a commanding effort. If there is a failure of one aspect in the fire fighting needs such as a dissimilar hose-valve connection, then it can result in the inability to extinguish a fire. Fire incident data compiled over nearly 30 years for underground coal mines shows that fires in belt entries account for 15-20 percent of the total number of fires. Fires in the belt entries of coal mines have resulted in injuries and fatalities. New regulations have been promulgated that require an unplanned fire not extinguished within 10 minutes of discovery to be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A fire that is not extinguished within several minutes may take hours or days to extinguish or may require sealing a section or the mine in some cases. The current fire protection regulations in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 30, Part 75 are designed to prevent or control the fire hazards present in a belt entry. These requirements and other factors affecting belt entry fires are discussed, including fire detection and warning, fire suppression devices, type and location of fire fighting equipment, waterlines, and cleanup and removal of combustible materials. The fire suppression systems used to extinguish/control a belt fire and the effect of ventilation on the propagation of conveyor belt fires are also discussed.

Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff's (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. "INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. The following is a summary of the Robert E. Murray Innovation Lecture on “Sustainable Copper Mining Flowsheets and the MissionZero Mine” presented as part of the keynote session on Feb. 23, 2026 during the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the appetite for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, rare earths and graphite has never been greater. Forecasts suggest that global mineral demand will double by 2050, driven by the proliferation of electric vehicles, renewable power infrastructure and digital technologies. This surge presents not only an immense opportunity but also an unprecedented challenge. In a world where every ton of ore processed and every liter of water used is scrutinized, how can mining deliver more with less, while meeting tightening environmental and social expectations? Traditional mining methods, developed for an era of abundant, high-grade ore and looser regulations, are struggling to meet today’s demands. Declining ore grades, volatile markets and the imperative to shrink environmental footprints have rendered traditional mineral processing practices unsustainable. The sector thus finds itself at a decisive juncture, caught between the need to fuel the green economy, defense and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, without compromising the planet’s future. Balancing these competing demands requires a paradigm shift in technologies and processes. FLS has responded to this challenge with MissionZero: an ambitious, holistic initiative to develop flowsheets for the future of mineral processing. This systemic approach aligns operational excellence with environmental responsibility. Integrating innovative technologies, digital intelligence and commodityspecific process designs, it offers mining professionals a roadmap to meet both production targets and sustainability goals. At the center of this approach is the belief that a more sustainable mining requires more than incremental improvement; it demands a fundamental shift in how we extract, process and manage resources. "Instrumentation and monitoring of ground deformations in tunneling is a principal means for selecting and controlling the excavation and support methods among those foreseen in the design, for ensuring safety during tunnel construction (including personnel safety inside the tunnel and safety of structures located at ground surface) and, finally, for ensuring construction quality management. In this paper, the effect of Hakim Tunnel excavation on the behavior of the surrounding ground was investigated based on the geotechnical instrumentation. This tunnel with 1080 m length, 18 m width and 12.6 m height is being constructed using the SEM/NATM along the Hakim Highway in Tehran. The results which are obtained from recorded displacements by geodetic pins (on the tunnel wall and roof), extensometers and settlements pins (at the ground surface) demonstrate the tunnel stability during the various stages of excavation. However, it is concluded that the rate of excavation in different sequences could have a major role on stability of tunnel. In this case the surface and underground openings were monitored as well as needed for controlling the face probably collapse. INTRODUCTION Tunneling is increasingly being used world-wide to provide the infrastructure required for sustainable urban areas. The high demand for space and the disturbance of existing infrastructures by construction measures increasingly forces future infrastructure projects to be conducted underground. One of the important purposes of tunneling projects in urban area is not only to minimize displacements but also to control them during the construction (Pourhashemi et al., 2015). Normal method of tunnel stability analysis is not able to evaluate the real rock and soil mass behavior. Hence, instrumentation is a practical method to monitor displacements, to evaluate the stability of underground openings, and also to determine the rock and soil mass properties (Dehghan et al., 2012. Dehghan, 2013). Rocks and soils are materials with properties that can change instantly and significantly from one point to the next. Some complications may often happen due to uncertainties in the loads that the new facility must withstand during construction and operation. Instrumentation and monitoring provide quantitative information on actual behavior of ground and adjacent structures. "INTRODUCTION A packaged cooling system is being developed for refuge alternatives (RAs) that meets MSHA qualification guidelines for deployment in coal mines. This system will allow full occupancy ratings of deployed Refuge Alternatives (RAs) to be maintained by keeping the apparent temperature inside the RA from exceeding 95°F. Research investigations sponsored by NIOSH have shown that heat buildup caused by occupants in mobile RAs will result in apparent temperatures that exceed the 95°F limit established in 30 CFR 7.504. Figure 1 shows the temperature rise in an inflatable RA having an occupancy rating of 23 people at an 81°F mine air temperature. This plot shows the need for either heat mitigation or occupancy derating in warmer mines. The RAECS will be designed to provide enough heat mitigation to eliminate occupancy derating due to heat buildup over the 96 hour refuge period.This paper describes testing of a prototype cooling system that uses proven vapor compression technology powered by batteries to keep the RA interior below the 95° limit for a minimum of 96 hours. Testing of this prototype cooling system was conducted in December of 2015 and January of 2016 at the NIOSH test mine in Bruceton, PA. December testing was conducted at the prevailing mine ambient temperature – approximately 60°F. The January testing was done with the mine ambient temperature in the immediate vicinity of the RA artificially elevated to 85°F. Realistic heat gain from RA occupants was provided by human simulators developed by NIOSH. These simulators add sensible heat corresponding to human metabolic processes and latent heat generated by respiration and perspiration. Heat generated by CO2 scrubbers was also added. Results of cooling system performance using these simulated loads at the two ambient conditions are described. A comparison of the apparent temperature in the RA using two different control techniques is also presented. This work documents the ability of the cooling system to meet the established apparent temperature limit at the full occupancy rating of a six person RA. A new cooling system intended for use with existing RA deployments and having greater cooling capacity is currently in development and will be described."

Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, called Straight Creek Tunnel during construction is located 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado at 11, 160 ft. elevation. It is 8, 510 feet long, and carries two lanes of 1-70 traffic under the Continental Divide. This paper describes improvements and changes made in construction methods for utilities, concrete lining, ceiling, wall covering and paving to allow maximum offsite fabrication and activity overlap resulting in a one-year faster completion for traffic. The substantial changes proposed on a design-and-construct basis by the contractor and put into effect after State approval were: 1. Substitution of ductile iron and thick-wall P.V. C. pipes for clay pipes allowing placement and operation before hole-thru. 2. Outside pre-assembly of large rebar mats, using a novel tension-splice with cable clamps. 3. Arch concrete placement method modified to make 4, 322 ft. of lining in 10 weeks possible. 4. Safety barriers precast and epoxy coated offsite instead of cast-in-place and tile faced. 5. Prestressed hollow ceiling slabs with porcelainenamel coated steel sheets assembled offsite, instead of in-place glazed tile and in-place cast concrete ceiling. 6. Glazed tile wall panels 8 ft. long by 11 ft. high assembled off site and erected using vacuum pad mounted on special lift. 7. Asphalt paving while other work proceeded, instead of reinforced concrete slab and asphalt overlay. Work started in January 1968, but advance came to a one-year standstill for major structural redesign and negotiations of a new agreement during 1970. Using multiple drift construction followed by top-heading and bench excavation, it then progressed to hole-thru in July 1972. As a result of art 18-month overlap of activities the tunnel was opened for traffic only eight months later in March 1973. Gibbons and Reed Company of Salt Lake City, Utah sponsored the joint Venture of Al Johnson-Gibbons and Reed-Western Paving-Kemper during 1971, 1972, and 1973. The tunnel was the subject of a previous paper delivered at the RETC '72 in Chicago by R. C. Hopper, T. A. Lang, and A. A. Mathews, describing geology, unusually severe structural loading and multiple-drift tunnel excavation.

It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. "The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. "In 2012, Superstorm Sandy (Sandy) caused extensive flooding in many of the tunnels in New York City. The inundation resulted in two distinct stress changes to the tunnel structures. The first stress change was water pressure on the inside face of the tunnel lining. The second condition related to the change in buoyancy of the tunnels. In areas where the tunnels were supported on rock and an adjoining area supported on soft soil, overstress issues arose. Numerical analyses were performed to assess the structural impacts of the tunnel water inundation; especially stress changes due to internal pressure as well as changes resulting from the buoyancy effects. The paper will discuss the assessment process and its results; it will demonstrate that the change in internal pressure were of little consequence, however the change in buoyancy resulted in significant increases in bolt stresses. INTRODUCTION Superstorm Sandy caused tens of billions of dollars in damage in the NYC metropolitan area. It also caused significant disruption to the transportation system by flooding most of the under river tunnels servicing Manhattan from the outer boroughs and New Jersey. The rehabilitation of the tunnels was of paramount importance to the restoration of the NY and NJ economies. With this rapid restoration, it was essential to determine whether the flooding of these tunnels caused damage to tunnel structures. A series of analyses were undertaken to ascertain whether the change in the stress conditions and buoyancy of the tunnels, due to the flooding, was significant enough to cause damage or over-stressing of the tunnel components. The effects of this unforeseen loading condition was a concern to the agencies operating these tunnels and were thus analyzed to ascertain if there were any adverse impacts. This was a concern because the majority of under river tunnels in NYC was built earlier in the century and constructed using bolted cast-iron lining segments. The cast iron, although quite strong in compression, is much less so in tension. Also, after nearly a century of use, the bolts connecting these segments together have under gone varying degrees of corrosion. The stress changes in both the liner segments and the supporting bolts were estimated for conservative ground support conditions to provide confidence that the flooding had not caused permanent damage."

To clarify what r mean about this long title, I would like to define the term technology. A standard definition of the word "technology" is "a technical method of achieving a practical purpose". Incidently, another definition of the term is merely "technical language". The same dictionary defines the word "technology" as "having a special, usually practical, knowledge of mechanical or scientific subject." Naturally, the practical purpose of the subject with which we are concerned is solving of problems we encounter in the mining industry. I might further describe the subject of this discourse by defining the term "manager". An old definition, "one who dispenses the duties of his position with care and economy." In line with the above definition most of the technology with which we in the mining industry are confronted with deals with some form of cost reduction. This may be related to the speed of doing an operation or to saving of labor or supply costs. These can be improvements of an existing method or the result of new processes or inventions, such as new machinery.
