Recognizing that throatbush wear rate has a major impact on the overall efficiency of slurry pumps, Weir Minerals has developed superior rotating and axial adjustment technology.In many applications, the pump’s throatbush is the component that has the shortest life compared to the impeller and liners, with considerable variability.Adjusting the gap between the throatbush and the impeller front shroud reduces hydraulic recirculation in the pump. This prevents localized wear on the throatbush, improves hydraulic efficiency and lowers the total ownership cost for the operator. To avoid impacting the plant’s production, these adjustments are often performed while the pump is operating. However, this can have safety implications for individuals working at the front of the pump unit.“Manually adjusting an alloy throatbush on a large pump requires several people and is laborintensive. It requires mechanical tools to adjust the four pusher bolts, one at a time, in order to reduce the gap between the throatbush and impeller. We wanted to find a safer and quicker way to extend the wear life of the pump with regular adjustments, which led us to development of this technology,” said Marcus Lane, global product manager for centrifugal pumps for Weir Minerals.“Our automated throatbush adjustment solutions are available for pumps fitted with either rubber or alloy throatbushes on Warman slurry pumps used in the most arduous applications, and have been designed with our customers’ safety and pump operation in mind. By mechanizing the adjustment procedure, personnel are removed from the line of fire, and the accuracy of axial movement is increased,” said Ron Bourgeois, director of slurry pumping technology group for Weir Minerals."

With commodity prices rising again and market conditions stabilizing, the Metals Economics Group (MEG) found that most mining companies increased their exploration budgets in 2010. In the groups 21st edition of the Corporate Exploration Strategies (CES), MEG found a 44-percent rise in the estimated worldwide exploration total for 2010. MEG found that the estimated total 2010 budget for nonferrous metals exploration reached $12.1 billion, reinstating almost two-thirds of the industry?s $6 billion in cuts to exploration in 2009. Nonferrous exploration refers to expenditures related to precious and base metals, diamonds, uranium and some industrial minerals; it excludes iron ore, aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. In 2008, exploration budgets were at an all-time high of $14.4 billion. This capped a six-year run in which budgets rose. In 2009, nonferrous exploration budgets dropped 42 percent in 2009 as the global economic crisis and declining prices for almost all commodities took their toll on the industry. Metals prices - the primary driver of exploration spending - have improved markedly since bottoming in early 2009, and have traded well above their long-term trends throughout 2010. In response, major, intermediate and junior companies have all increased their aggregate exploration allocations in 2010. In particular, the significant improvement in the availability of equity financings for the juniors over the past 12 to 18 months has allowed this group to account for the largest share of the overall increase in exploration spending this year.

This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

The Hallmark Distribution Center is one of the most sophisticated material handling and order filling facilities in the world. The 53 million cubic foot facility houses an ultra-modern, computer- monitored distribution complex that handles as many as 1/4 million orders per day. The Distribution Center replaces 16 leased buildings scattered through- out metropolitan Kansas City and, in addition, re-leased 4 floors in mid-town Kansas City needed for creative and administrative expansion. This new facility is the nerve center for distribution of Hallmark products in United States and Latin America. The size and gross numbers of all parts of the system is a significant accomplishment, but the purpose of this paper is to explain the technical advancements in the state-of-the-art of material handling and controls. The system iteself is made up of seven sub-systems including receiving, warehousing, picking rack stocking, towline, order filling, order sorting, and shipping. Significant techniques were used in each of these areas as well as technical advancements in the state-of-the- art. The most significant points are in 4 of the areas and are discussed in this paper.

Since the decade of the 1990s is nearly upon us, I have focused on what I see are the likely trends featured in new large underground coal mines 10 years from now. I do this from the vantage point of having been involved in the installation of large mines for more than twenty years. Little of the equipment resources we have available today was unknown when I entered the coal business in 1960. There were continuous miners, longwalls and diesel-powered equipment in Europe, monitoring systems, computers, heavy media separation systems, froth flotation and conveyors then as there are now. A substantial evolutionary process has occurred with these and other mining machines and processes. Some evolved only to die out, such as boring-type continuous miners; others, such as longwall systems, flourished. My intuition tells me that since there have been largely evolutionary rather than revolutionary developments in the near past, the same is true of the future, at least for the next 10 years. In other words, the elements of what are in the future are with US now. Some, such as computer-based applications, may evolve beyond our wildest dreams -but I doubt it.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. Requirements of New South Wales Regulations on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are described.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Gentlemen, today I would like to talk to you about metal and nonmetal mine health and safety--past, present and future. Briefly, I will comment on the past because it is important to an understanding of our present activity and our plans for the future. Federal inspection of noncoal mines was not authorized until 1966, when congress passed the federal metal and nonmetal mine health and safety act; public law 89-577, with the passage of this act, the federal inspector, for the first time, had the delegated authority and responsibility to enforce health and safety regulations designed to prevent personal injuries and occupational diseases, the new law also provided for the education and training of our miners; assistance to the operator through the transmission of technical and scientific information and assistance and equally important, the law made provision for state participation in the congressional mandate to prevent injuries and save lives in the mineral industry, Before I tell you about our program and our future plans, I want you to know that I am here to listen as well as to talk! In my view, the only kind of communication that is meaningful is two-way communication. Our nationwide progress in metal and nonmetal mine health and safety during 1972 cannot be measured in reduced fatalities or injuries. The unforeseen tragedy that took pace in Kellogg, Idaho, in may of last year mode that almost a certainty.

Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME's March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry's premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators' symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year's SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW's award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. [Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800's among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR's) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR's were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

The desire to minimize gaseous effluent in smelting and maximize gold yields from refractory ore are driving the nonferrous and gold refining industries to demand more and more oxygen. This, coupled with an increasingly competitive marketplace, forces the investigation of alternate methods of oxygen supply. Current progress in both the non-cryogenic and cryogenic fields is making the use of low-purity oxygen much more attractive. The benefits of on-site production are now available to most oxygen users. Historically, these on-site advantages could only be achieved by relatively large plants using high-purity cryogenic technology. The evolution of low-purity cryogenic and non­cryogenic oxygen production has added a new method of delivering on-site production. Specifically, the advent of oxygen Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) technology has brought these benefits to smaller-volume customers by cost-effectively supplying oxygen requirements as low as 20 tons per day, (tpd). Low-purity cryogenic plants have also made an impact on the market, yielding cost reductions for larger-volume customers with oygen requirements greater than 70 tpd. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of current supply methods for users having varying volume, purity and other requirements.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has undertaken an under-ground transit project to extend public transportation service from downtown Boston to the South Boston Piers area. This new system, known as the Transit way, will connect existing subway lines to this area which is comprised of approximately 300 acres, in light of the potential for 21 million square feet of development by 2010. This system includes construction of a concrete immersed tube tunnel crossing of Fort Point Channel. The crossing will be accomplished in the highly congested setting of down-town Boston and will be located just to the north of the famous Boston Tea Party ship exhibit and amid major Central Artery Construction activity. The most recent concrete tube constructed in the United States was in 1962. The Fort Point Channel Crossing will employ current design and construction methods commonly utilized in the Netherlands, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This paper will present the design philosophy, planning, and evaluation of alternative crossing methods which led to the selection of the concrete immersed tube tunnel and construction techniques envisioned for this particular application.

The mineral industry shares a particularity- heterogeneity-with the other primary industries exploiting nature such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, which may not be found in the secondary industries, In the mineral industry heterogeneity is evident both in the raw material, the ore in situ, and in the working conditions. Mining engineering, which encompasses the tools for designing mine production systems, is mostly an assembly of the other branches of engineering and applied science. The assemblage's goal is to arrive at an optimal production system. As such, mining engineering is similar to systems engineering. The technique for the development of systems-mine production systems or mining operations -is operations research with its succession of activities: observations, modeling, experimentation, and verification. Comparisons among alternative systems are highly desirable during the development phase of a mining operation as well as during later phases where modifications, ameliorations, and expansions are carried out on the existing system. The role of the independent consultant in systems design and development lies in the collection and breadth of experiences from modeling and model verification in other operations, which he can add to a new system's development and thus in- crease its credibility with management.

An overview of the process employed to assess arsenic exposure levels at a gold mine is provided together with the recommended control measures. Arsenic and its compounds are regulated in Ontario as designated substances in all workplaces except mines and concentrators. There is a proposal to remove the exemption for mine and concentrators. If the exemption is removed, the mining industry will be required to adopt the proposed exposure Limit of 0.01 mg/m over 40 hours. There are many mines in Ontario which will be affected by this new regulation. To determine the extent of which workers are exposed to Levels exceeding 0.01 mg/m , an assessment program was initiated at the mine. The main objective of the program was to determine the effect of the proposed regulation on underground and surface operations in term of compliance if it becomes Law. The data obtained from the assessment program shared that only 1ML of the workplaces monitored for arsenic indicated levels above the proposed limit of 0.01 ,/yard all workplace levels were below the present Limit of 0.2 mg/m .

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

Recovery of galena and sphalerite from fine grained lead-zinc ores by flotation normally requires re-grinding to achieve economic recoveries at acceptable concentrate grades. Re-grinding aims to reduce the coarse valuable mineral particles to a size where they float more readily and to liberate the composite valuable particles so that the gangue in these composites does not dilute the concentrate. Besides changing particle size and liberation, re-grinding changes the surfaces of the minerals and thus may alter the rate that mineral particles of a given size and liberation float. A method was developed to apportion the total change in recovery after re-grinding between changes in size and liberation and changes in flotation rates. The flotation behaviour of minerals, before and after re-grinding, was measured by floating samples of plant streams under controlled conditions in a laboratory cell. Results from several industrial lead-zinc circuits indicated that the change in behaviour observed fell into three different categories. It is concluded that the method will indicate whether the focus for optimization of existing plant should be on comminution or flotation, and it will help determine the path for laboratory testing in designing new regrind circuits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Diesel Controls Limited evaluated a new diesel emission control system on an underground mine vehicle. The system was a catalyzed ceramic wall-flow diesel particulate filter (CDPF) combined with an catalytic converter, or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). This paper describes the design and installation of the system on a load-haul-dump (LHD). The results of screening tests conducted by the USBM are also given. The screening tests were conducted to determine if the device's particulate collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effect on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions changed over the period it was being used. The system was removed from the LHD and evaluated in the laboratory after operating for 308 and 1200 hours. After 308 hours of operation, laboratory testing revealed its particulate collection efficiency varied from 41.0 to 93.5 percent, depending on engine operating conditions. Its regeneration temperature was about 415° C. It reduced HC emissions by up to 97.6 percent, and CO by up to 95.0 percent. When tested in the laboratory after operating for 1200 hours on the vehicle, no significant change in performance was observed.

The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. An approximate 12-mile segment of the river from the town of Red River to the village of Questa (Questa) includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. Alteration ?scars? formed as a result of rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks. Storm water runoff from the scar drainages contributes metal-laden, acidic water to the river and creates a visible plume of discolored water in the river. Acidic runoff reduces the river pH from 7 to the mid 3s for at least 2 hours during large storms and the low pH water continues downstream. Runoff from scar drainages increases some metal concentrations in the river from below chronic ecological criteria to as much as two orders of magnitude greater than acute ecological criteria, and results in acutely toxic conditions for macro-invertebrates. A general improvement in the river?s water quality occurs downstream due to dilution from tributary inflow from non-mineralized watersheds, the natural buffering capacity of the river, and storm water controls at the Chevron Mining Inc. Questa mine.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations in in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence collected from the Lucky Friday mine by US Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of previous case studies, demonstrated that in situ stress variations affect the [spatial] distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies. they are too expensive and, depending, on conditions, may be too difficult to collect. However, information on borehole and raise breakouts: deformation of mine openings: and patterns of seismicity, ground-control problems and rock-burst damage can be used to build a stress database. In conjunction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rockmass behavior, this database can then be used to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map could provide a means of anticipating patterns of mining-induced seismicity and. Thus, could be the basis for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

Mine valuation is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary process by which the economic viability of an old, existing, or new mining property or venture is determined. The problems associated with arriving at a representative and accurate value for a mining property are complex and numerous, and the procedures utilized in determining these values vary from simple, back-of-envelope calculations to sophisticated mathematical manipulations requiring computer modeling and analysis. Regardless of the complexity or the degree of sophistication associated with any particular project, the evaluation process must ultimately provide management with two basic types of information. First, the evaluation process should indicate whether or not the mining project is economically viable after careful consideration of all engineering, environmental, geologic, and other variables pertaining to the project. Second, the evaluation process should provide management in- formation on the relative attractiveness of the project when compared to other alternatives. In some cases, it may be extremely difficult to supply this information for a project directly. Nonetheless, the evaluation process should and must present all information necessary in a format which can be incorporated into the decision-making process as expeditiously as possible.
