The prospects for near-term growth in coal demand are exceptional: the federal government recently targeted 141 oil- and gas-fired generating units for mandatory conversion to coal; coal-to-synfuel developments are proceeding at a steady clip, with construction of a $1.2 billion gasification plant to begin this year in Beulah, ND; uncertainty over nuclear power and stratospheric oil prices enhance the steam coal market; the export market is ripening; and an influential new political force (the Senate Coal Caucus and Congressional Coal Group) is flexing its muscles on Capitol Hill. But the rosy picture is muddled by signals, often conflicting, sent out by federal agencies. Although EPA can be credited with relaxing its grip on the Clean Air Act, its sulfur dioxide control strategy is still often at odds with the Administration's call for domestic energy (coal) development. B. R. Brown, president of Consolidation Coal Co., sums up the situation: "Every mule is pulling in a different direction." Often in the midst of the fray is the small operator who has been hardest hit by the stagnation of coal markets. Layoffs, shortened work weeks, and mine closures were rampant in the eastern and midwestern coal fields, even among large producers. The longstanding boom in western coal was tempered during 1979 by a noticeable slowdown in announcements of new mine construction. The prognosis: Eastern coal will remain in the doldrums for quite a while to come as it works off some 90 Mt of overcapacity. Midwestern coal will fare no better due to the regulatory-influenced appetite of midwestern utilities for low-sulfur western coal. This displacement should ease, though, as new power plants equipped to burn high-sulfur coal come on line in the years ahead. In the West, the National Coal Association projects production to increase a healthy- 10% this year, although mine-to-market transportation looms as the single largest stumbling block to marketing efforts. Fatalities Up 40% in 1979 The National Coal Association estimated total coal production in 1979 at 671 Mt, an increase of 13% over 1978. Of this total, the East and Mid-west accounted for 476 Mt (71%) and the West produced 195 Mt (29%). With the consistent rise in western production playing against flat outputs in the East and Midwest, underground mining's share of total production continues to slip and is expected to account for only 38-39% in 1980. Incidence of deaths and injuries at US coal mines soared in 1979 over 1978 rates. MSHA figures (still subject to final adjustments) reveal a death rate of 0.07 per 200 000 man-hours, up 40% over 1978's 0.05 figure. MSHA chief Bob Lagather attributed the death incidence to the large number of new coal mines put on line in 1978, which he estimated at between 350 and 400. Nonfatal injuries rose to 8.48 per 200 000 man-hours, up about 15% from a 1978 rate of 7.35. In absolute numbers, MSHA counted 144 fatalities and 18 111 lost-day injuries during the 1979 calendar year. The 144 coal mining deaths in 1979 is the highest number of coal fatalities at US mines since 1975.

Studies of sulfidization and flotation of chrysocolla involving the use of pH and sulfide ion instruments, a Zeta meter, microflotation techniques, and sensitive determinations of adsorbed sulfur have given new insight into the mechanism of the process. Factors that affect the recovery of sulfidized chrysocolla by flotation appear to be the pH at which it is sulfidized, and certain alterations of the surface that occur during aging after sulfidization. Such aging results in increased recoveries. The surface charge, as measured by electrophoretic mobility, of chrysocolla shows an unexpected negative increase as pH values are changed from 6.0 to about 4.5, and this appears to be correlated with increasing sulfur adsorption and flotation recovery over the same or even wider pH ranges.

Within NESMI there are different ways to set up indicators and evaluate them throughout the NESMI Members. First analyses concerning the Demand and Competence within NESMI are developed. New focus points for analyses can be implemented into NESMI.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. The only good news in the exploration sector in 1982-a year plagued by low metal prices and weak demand-was precious metals. Gold in particular remained in the forefront, as it has for at least the past three years. The reason for this is partially due to gold's seeming resilience to conventional supply side factors-such as new production-that normally influence many other metals. Also, with projected production costs of about $6.40-$9.65/g ($200¬$300/oz), modest deposits with average grades can offer an early return on capital investment and good profit potential. Keeping escalating capital costs for new mining ventures within reason has shifted gold exploration efforts in recent years. Many mining companies are seeking relatively low grade, modest tonnage, near-surface gold mineralization. This, of course, leads to lower development costs using open-pit mining methods. Recent refinements in the carbon-in-pulp recovery process also has enhanced the economics of such deposits. Slumping economic conditions certainly played a key role in shaping exploration activity last year. Nearly every major mineral-producing state recorded exploration slowdowns. In Alaska, for example, development expenditures approached the level of exploration spending for the first time in the state's history. This not only reflects major companies' decisions to move toward production but also the economic slowdown. The worldwide recession stopped Nevada's exploration and mining boom "dead in its tracks," said John Schilling, state geologist. The year was one of layoffs and closings for the state's mines and exploration offices, he reported. Similar trends were noted in most other states, especially in the West and Southwest. In the Pacific Northwest, however, exploration appeared to continue at a relatively good pace considering the metals market. In the mining geophysical community, recent advances in telecommunications and microprocessor technology are continuing to provide a positive impact. Many geophysicists have begun using satellite digital communication links to access computer systems from remote sites where using a microcomputer would be difficult. There were also major contributions made in exploration geochemistry last year. Highlights include progress in formulating mineral deposit models, geochemical exploration in glaciated and arid environments, and publication of many informative books. The following state-by-state summary and articles on geophysics and geochemistry provides a detailed view of exploration events throughout the US in 1982.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. Reviewing events in the minerals industry, in economic geology, and in my own exploration work, I find that the most compelling subject for comment is the increasing ferment in ore deposits theory. New discoveries and continued investigations of bedded deposits of lead and zinc, copper, iron, uranium, etc., coupled with the availability of much new and significant data from sedimentary and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and oceanography, has led many economic geologists like myself to become disenchanted with former simplistic notions. Now disenchantment among serious people should presuppose both valid objections to the old, and valid new substitutes. I can sum up my own position and, I believe, what most of the recent writers on ore deposits theory are trying to tell us, by saying that a physico-chemical (bench science) approach to a natural science is neither correct nor useful, and that the obvious cure is a return to the study of the geology of ore deposits. More specifically, ore should be viewed merely as an unusual concentration produced, in stages, by the natural processes inherent in the geochemical cycle. In criticizing the conceptual basis of a science, one is involved simultaneously in the inherent character of the science, its subject matter, and the old and new concepts. I have found it impossible to make a clean separation along those lines. As a result, and as the title suggests, these are not-quite-random reflections on genesis, a matter near and dear to all true treasure hunters since Agricola.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. Bituminous sands of the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta constitute the ore for the surface mining operation at Syncrude Canada Ltd. These sediments represent a complex succession of fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. Grade prediction is realized through a combination of geological interpretation, computer modeling, and reference to past mining experience. Accurate forecasts of feed grade permit reliable predictions of volumes for removal to meet budgeted synthetic crude oil production. This planning facilitates efficient allocation of mining equipment and resources. The feed grade to the Extraction Plant is monitored at various points along the delivery system.

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. The products of the coming decade will possess such stringent design criteria that it is unlikely today's monolithic materials will be able to meet them. The discovery, characterization and cost- effective manufacture of a whole new generation of highly engineered materials therefore have become essential requirements for participation in the materials marketplace of the 1990s and beyond. Meeting these challenges will require advances on a broad variety of scientific and engineering fronts, including: strengthened fundamental understanding of materials behavior; composite and laminate programs offering the compatible and synergistic combination of metals, ceramics and polymers; advanced engineering and structural design techniques; processing technologies capable of producing advanced materials efficiently; and, the development of new products taking advantage of the availability and cost-effectiveness of these highly engineered, advanced materials.

In recent years limited markets have been developed for fly ash, the dust removed from coal-burning powerplant stacks, but most of it is still dumped in spoils areas at a cost ranging from 20 cents to $1.75 per ton. Aside from this cost, the creation of huge spoils areas can present a considerable aesthetic problem. Since the present annual fly ash output of about 20 million tons will probably reach 30 million by 1970, and because satisfactory disposal areas are becoming more limited, markets for much larger quantities of the waste are needed to keep disposal costs from becoming a significant economic factor in coal-burning powerplant operation. Current stress on air-pollution control and beautification, plus the vital need for good powerplant economy, makes it imperative, therefore, that coal producers and consumers expand markets and develop new applications for fly ash. Markets for established uses can be increased by making a greater effort to sell fly ash. New large tonnage markets for fly ash should be sought via more intensive, coordinated research. The economics of fly ash utilization underscores the vital role that must be played by research. To be competitive with other products, processes for the conversion of fly ash into marketable materials face difficulty in regard to two important economic factors--transportation cost and product utility--the other economic factors are favorable. Raw material costs of fly ash, for example, are quite attractive, and supply is no problem because there are many coal-burning powerplants in operation and many more are planned. Demand for products made from fly ash will grow if their utility is established and a good sales program is initiated. The major problems then are transporta¬tion costs and development of useful products.

Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

Sulphur dioxide is a versatile gas which has many uses throughout Pulp & Paper, Chemical, specialty Chemical, Mining and other industries. During recent years, S0 2 consumption and distribution patterns have resulted in renewed interests for liquid S0 2 and on site gaseous S02 manufacturing facilities. one relatively new use for S0 2 in the Mining Industry is its use for cyanide detoxification. This paper reviews the successful application of oxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and considers the role that well focussed research initiatives can play in bringing further radical change to the metallurgical industry. Particular reference is made to the Cuprex Metal Extraction Process (CMEP), for the treatment of low grade or difficult to treat sulfide concentrates, using the reagent Acorga CLX- 50 to recover the copper and the reagent Acorga ZNX-50 for the recovery of zinc from chloride solutions. The last few years have produced new methods of characterizing flow properties of bulk solids. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field condi¬tions. In addition, the effect of large par¬ticles on a material's flow properties (cohe¬sive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of var¬ious additives such as freeze conditioning agents. New developments have occurred with devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to find¬ing ways, by using inserts, to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls. Such devices can also provide reli¬able in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids or completely nonsegregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. The technology and hardware for running bench scale flow tests on bulk solids samples and transforming the results into reliable designs has been in existence for nearly 30 years (Jenike, 1964; Marinelli and Carson, 1986). It has been shown repeatedly that reliable materials handling systems can be designed to avoid the problems of no-flow due to arching or rat-holing, erratic flow, segregation, loss of capacity, or spontaneous combustion. Running flow properties tests and carefully designing a bulk handling system are not expensive, particularly when compared to downtime costs and continual flow problems. New developments in characterizing flow properties of bulk solids include: • a shear tester for measuring the properties of run-of-mine ores containing large par¬ticles; • attrition testers to simulate a wide range of flow conditions; • a tester to measure the wear rate of liners in bins, feeder parts, etc.; • a dustiness tester to measure the potential for dust and the effect of dust control meas¬ures; and • techniques for measuring the strength of frozen ores and the effect of freeze condi¬tioning agents. In the area of improving the flow of bulk solids, there are new techniques for ensuring reliable flow without using up excessive headroom. These include: • belt-to-belt transfer chutes to handle po¬tentially sticky, abrasive, and dusty ores; • designs for the interface between a bin/ hopper and apron or belt feeders to avoid hangups and minimize feeder loads; methods to feed solids reliably into a pres¬surized process; and designs for handling systems that will mini¬ mize attrition, avoid segregation, or auto¬matically blend materials together. Characterizing flow properties Large shear cell It has long been known that the cohesive strength of a bulk solid is due mainly to its fine fraction. However, the effect of the larger particles (that were assumed to re¬duce the strength) could not be measured. The development of larger scale (205 mm¬diam and 0.6 x 0.9 m or 8 in.-diam and 2 x 3 ft) shear testers has made it possible to measure the properties of a wider range of materials. Now cohesive strength measurements can be made with up to 100 mm (4 in.) particles. The results obtained from the large shear testers, together with the results of the nor¬mal shear tests on the fine fraction, are used in the design of reliable stockpile reclaim systems and crusher feed systems. A high percentage of large particles can reduce the measured shear strength of a bulk solid. However, segregation may alter the size distribution and should therefore be considered (Carson, Royal, and Goodwill, 1986). In addition, larger particles will
