Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

INTRODUCTION The majority of ground water flow models have been developed for large computer systems. Most of these operate under a batch mode of operation, that is, the data are input with a deck of punched cards. The advent of micro- and minicomputers over the last few years opens the possibility of adapting many of these large flow programs to the smaller computers. In general, this adaptation will require more computer time to run the program, but in many cases if the small computer is in-house, the overall cost may be less than that required for a large computer. There are also a number of peripheral devices that can be used to make the data input much easier. As an example, the use of a digitizer with a finite element or finite difference mesh reduces the data input time considerably; the use of a graphics terminal for display of the mesh immediately after it is developed shows immediately whether there are errors in the location of node points. DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTERACTIVE SYSTEM The finite element program, UNSAT2, has been used over the past several years by the authors for several ground water flow problems (Bloomsburg, 1977; Bloomsburg and Wells, 1978; Zahl and Bloomsburg, 1980). In the past these programs have been run on an IBM 370/ 145 computer under the batch mode of operation. One difficulty that has been encountered has been in determining the length of time step that must be specified for operation of the program. The problem is that if the time steps are too large, the program becomes un- stable and operation ceases. If this happens in the middle of the problem, the only alternative is to reduce the length of time step and repeat the entire run. This problem has been alleviated in other pro- grams by using a subroutine that determines the time step automatically. If the solution becomes unstable, the time step is reduced automatically and that portion of the solution is repeated. With an interactive system this can be done by storing the output pressures and restarting the program with the new output pressures. Under the batch mode of operation, there is an option in UNSAT2 that allows restarting of the program from the last point of solution, but this must be specified when originally starting the program. The interactive computer system that we use currently consists of a PDP 1 1 /23 with hard disk drive, CRT terminal, plotter, graphics terminal, digitizer, and printer. The computer has 256 K bytes of core storage and the hard disk drive will accept a 5.2 M byte disk. To run a large program on a computer such as this, some overlaying must occur; that is, subroutines are stored on disk and put into core storage only when they are actually needed for running the program. UNSAT2 required very few changes to run on this computer but some changes were necessary to take advantage of the interactive capabilities of the system. One of these changes consists of the development of a program called DBUILD to build the data file for running the program. This program calls for each piece of data by prompt statement and gives instructions for using the digitizer. The data are then entered in completely unformated form. The node points must be entered in order and the coordinates are determined automatically by the digitizer. The pressure readings or initial conditions on each node point are entered through the terminal. All element information also is entered through the terminal. After DBUILD is run the mesh may be displayed immediately on the graphics scope whereupon any error in node point

1. Introduction Laboratory and industrial grinding tests have shown that the process of size reduction can be significantly influenced by chemicals added to the powder or slurry being ground. The terms grinding aid or grinding additive refers to a substance which when mixed into the mill contents causes an increase in the rate of size reduction. The increased rate can be used to grind a higher feed rate to the desired product size or it can be used to produce a finer product size at a fixed feed rate. Whether the use of a grinding aid is justified in any given situation depends on the cost of the substance versus the improvement of output or product quality obtained with its use. Obviously, an expensive chemical must be effective in very small concentrations if it is to be economically justifiable; the cost criteria is calculated on the basis of the cost of the grinding additive per ton of material ground. Although there is direct experimental verification of the advantageous effect of grinding additives, no sound scientific explanation has yet been offered which explains or predicts the general behavior of additives. Rose and Sullivan have summarized most of the work undertaken prior to 1950 and Hartley, Prisbrey, and Wick have recently prepared an updated synopsis of the grinding additive literature. Many of the studies reported consist of subjecting materials with simple geometric shapes to some type of hardness or controlled single fracture test. On the other hand, a number of the studies were carried out on operating industrial scale mills, with little control or precise monitoring of the effect of the additives.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mine inspection in Canada forms one element of the enforcement of the Atomic Energy Control Act; it is under this Act that all Canadian uranium mines and mills are licensed to operate. Inspection duties are carried out by a small core staff of federal government inspectors (working for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB)) largely supplemented by provincial mine inspectors working on behalf of the AECB. Unlike most resource extraction in Canada, uranium mining is under federal jurisdiction and consequently it was the AECB who decided in 1975 that changes in the Canadian uranium mining industry, particularly its expansion and the expanding role of the mine inspector in the limiting of exposures, warranted the offering of a special radiation protection training course. The Uranium Mine Inspector Training Course (UMITC) was first conducted in 1976 at the Elliot Lake Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Subscription for the course was not limited to mine inspectors to enable union stewards, management personnel and provincial/federal labour inspectors to attend. This paper will present an outline of the course content, the format of its presentation and non-curriculum aspects of running a course of this type in uranium-producing community. The core lecturers for UMITC are drawn from the Radiation Protection and Uranium Mine Divisions of the AECB. In addition, guest lecturers are invited from universities and medical research centres together with industry professionals and government researchers. In all some twenty-four plus presentations are made over the first five days of lectures. The program topic areas, hazards, controls, measurements, record-keeping and health effects are preceded by an intensive half-day session on radiation fundamentals. TOPICS Hazards [Dust] A review of the dynamics of airborne particles including the effects of particle size, gravity and wake-turbulence on the behaviour of dust clouds. Associated topics are migrational aspects of dust particles and specific dust-generating mine operations. [Radiation] Canadian uranium mines are increasingly diverse in nature ranging from large scale low-grade underground operations in Elliot Lake to smaller high-grade open pits in Saskatchewan. Papers are presented on assessments of internal and external exposure, the metabolic pathways of ingested or inhaled radiation and the specifics of mine and mill hazards. Radiation hazards are further broken down into gamma surveys of uranium mines, radon daughter concentrations and problem areas. Controls The relationship between mining methods and the operating environment is critically important to ensuring safe working conditions. This refers to both the selection of machinery/devices, etc., and to engineering controls which are instituted to remedy problems created by new technology. UMITC examines a number of possible mining techniques, their criteria for selection and impact on the working environment. Control measures, ventilation practices and design, the need for continuous water misting and special open-pit precautions are presented. These lectures frequently conclude with suggestions for better operating guidelines for mine ventilation systems and the need for greater co-operation between the ventilation department and the underground crews. Measurements Uranium mining regulations stress the need for a high standard of exposure monitoring, statistical planning and record-keeping. [Statistics] Although many course participants are well versed in statistics, certain fundamentals are repeated and include, the concepts of mean, variance, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean. Confidence levels, decision-making based on sample statistics and statistical records are also discussed. [Dust Measurement] Dust measurement is particularly critical in the mines where the high silica content of the ore body, such as those at Elliot Lake, results in the continuous generation of dust. Sampling practices, filtration, impaction, thermal impaction and electrostatic precipitation are explained together with the methods of counting samples to determine free silica. Konimetric and gravimetric techniques for dust sampling are compared and contrasted. [Radiation Measurements] Both collective and personal dosimetry systems are used in the Canadian uranium mining industry and lectures are presented on each. Techniques and possible sources of error are discussed for a variety of radon and radon daughter measurement methods - Lucas method, Tsivoglou and modified Tsivoglou, Kusnetz, Rolle. Instant working level meters and personal alpha dosimeters are explained in terms of calibration, maintenance, readout and estimation of accuracy. Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates which share certain physical and petrologic characteris¬tics and which may comprise a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate of Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate of Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation of San Manuel-Kalamazoo, termed "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" herein. Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Arizona, and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" are composed of poorly sorted conglomerates, lenticular sandstone beds, andesitic to rhyolitic flows and tuffs, and unique monothologic landslide breccias. They contain fragments of holyokeite - - a rare oligoclase lava of porcellaneous appearance. Their basal contacts are considered to be depositional and overlapping, sometimes complicated by later low-angle faulting. They arc quite different than the younger Cila, Pantano, and most "Whitetail" alluvial beds, and the older Amole, Recreation, Claflin Ranch, etc. elastics; in particular they are thinner and less widespread. Their ages are Eocene to late Oligocene. "Locomotive-type fanglomerates" may be genetically related to porphyry coppers as products of subsequent differentiation and volcanism, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of restricted area and extreme relief. They might be utilized as reconnaissance guides to target areas and as structural guides within target areas in the southwestern U.S., Northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. A statistical model for assessing the risk of ground subsidence in abandoned mine areas is presented. The model is based on the relationship that exists between .the frequency and the location-of subsidence events in a given area and the physical conditions of the ground. These conditions can be described by a series of geological, mining, and physical variables. The model suggests the existence of regions in the multidimensional space of variables which are associated .with increases or decreases in the frequency of subsidence events. Regions associated with an increase in the frequency of subsidence events correspond to regions of higher risks, and vice versa. Risk assessment is based on the ability to express the limits of these high and low risk regions in the, space of variables, and on the ability to express the degree of membership of blocks of land within any of these regions. The theoretical framework for the model is extracted, from discriminant analysis. Risk is quantified by the probabilities of membership of blocks of land into any of these regions. Risk maps are produced by displaying membership probabilities in. appropriate contouring levels. The model has been applied in two urban areas where subsidence of the ground has been active in the past. The two areas are Penn Hills, near Pittsburgh, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in northeastern Pennsylvania. In this paper, only the results for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area are presented. Those for the Penn Hills area have been presented elsewhere (Cervantes, et al, 1990). In the- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area, geostatistical estimates of variables likely to affect the stability of the ground were made using samples from 53 drillholes. The estimates were made for 2000x2000 ft squared blocks of land covering the study area. Discriminant functions were computed from the estimated variables and used to establish regions for classifying blocks of land into one of these two populations: 1) blocks not likely to have a subsidence event, and ii) blocks likely to have one or more subsidence events. The same, discriminant functions were used to compute membership probabilities for blocks of land to tall within any of these two populations. These probabilities were contoured to produce a risk map. The risk map produced compares well with the location of the subsidence events which have occurred to date in the area.

Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. As part of its continuing research on selective mining, the Bureau of Mines has made progress toward developing a tool capable of remotely extracting hard minerals through a borehole. As the successor to the successful borehole miner, which extracted soft materials through a straight borehole, this new device has several innovative features: 1) it can propel itself in and out of an 8-inch borehole; 2) it can cut hard rock with an abrasive jet and transport the cuttings to the surface; and 3) it can negotiate deviated boreholes--the feature that enables it to follow a vein and extract only the values. This paper describes the development and feature testing of the reamer/miner.

A mathematical model is described for the transfer of hydrophobic compounds from aqueous to an immiscible organic phase using fine bubble aeration; the process otherwise known as "solvent sublation" an adsorptive bubble separation process. The limitations of the model are explored by simulating experimental results both for a batch scale process and a continuous process. The qualitative predictions of the model with respect to the influence of the organic layer (mineral oil) are tested by performing experiments using chloroform and 2,3,6-trichloroanisole as hydrophobic compounds in the aqueous phase. The continuous process is seen to be limited by the requirements of fine bubble generation and the ratio of influent feed rate to air flow rate.

Mining in Estonian oil shale deposit mainly takes place in the Ordovician, Keila-Kukruse aquifer. The aquifer is affected by mining and is fully dried out around the working mine areas (Perens and Savitski, 2008). The groundwater level is decreased down to 30 m, to the mine floor elevation using about 30 pumping stations (Lind, 2005). The pumping rate is very high - depending on the season, ranging from 10 up to 40 m3 per ton of produced oil shale (Reinsalu et al., 2006). The Estonian oil Shale Company mined 15.5 million tons of oil shale in 2007 (Source: Estonian Oil Shale Company). In order to predict the effects, and avoid the social and environmental impacts, there is a need to continuously monitor the situation and run software simulations aiming at decreasing the pumping rate. This becomes even more important since the environmental taxes on usage of groundwater resources increase every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor groundwater level and quality, and develop a groundwater model for the overview of the situation during mine operations and also for a number of years after mine closure.

To accommodate the new Pier A expansion at BWI airport, a 1.8 m (6.0 ft)diameter stormwater pipe was constructed below active Runway 15R-33L. The jacked tunnel alignment runs east/west below the runway, and the depth the crown was 6.1 m(20 ft). Soil conditions consisted of very loose to medium sand and gravel, with some medium stiff clay and silt. Super Jet Grouting was selected as the ground treatment system, creating large diameter columns. All work was performed from the surface of the runway between the hours of 12 am and 6 am. Monitoring points along the tunnel in the grout zone indicated zero settlement during tunneling. Tunneling operations in front of and beyond the treatment zone experienced significant settlement. Super Jet Grouting in the treatment zone provided a low permeability continuous stable soilcrete that was readily mined while the runway remained in service.

Modification of clays is necessary for the zearalenone (ZEN), as long-chain mycotoxins, removal. The organic-cations were usually used to modify the clay hydrophobicity to accommodate the large mycotoxin molecules. In this study, tri capryl methylammonium (TCMA) chloride and common corn oil were used in clay modification. Several characterization techniques such as XRD, FTIR, and TGA were used to identify the d-spacing changes after modification either by TCMA or corn oil. The results of applying the TCMA-corn oil-modified clays in ZEN removal indicated a noticeable improvement where more than 90% of ZEN could be removed in vitro at acidic and neutral pH values. The success of eliminating a high percentage of ZEN molecules is due to the expansion of intergallery spacing as a result of TCMA surfactant intercalation within the clayforming layers. The removal percentage does not depend only on pH but also on the amount of clay used. In addition, the ZEN removal in the presence of corn oil is better at acidic pH and small clay amount where the ZEN can be fully removed.

A 1.89 km-long, 4.5 m-I.D. tunnel was successfully constructed through saturated hard clay, and highly abrasive dense sand and gravel, with groundwater heads ranging from 10 to 20 m. In order to address these conditions, a Lovat earth pressure balance TBM was used, with soil conditioning by foam, water and various polymers. Support was provided by a single-pass segmented concrete lining. Groundwater inflows of 400to 1,600 lpm at times created challenges for changing cutting tools. Surface settlements were generally less than measurement thresholds, except under very low cover at startup. This project provides a pivotal case study of the successful application of EPBM technology in saturated, abrasive glacial soils and the successful application of soil conditioners.

Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in under-ground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Optimum designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary for minimizing haulage cost. Two computer simulation models, CMaCS and BELTSIM, available for optimizing these designs are compared. These comparison include: modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.

Coal is a low-cost fuel with high calorific value. Statistically, the global coal mining industry suffered 12,489 fatalities in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900 to 2020. This review article discusses the occurrence, mechanism and explosibility parameters of coal dust explosions and presents a literature survey of the laboratory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation methods of studying them, as well as a comparison of the two methods.

Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.
