With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

Project Payette is a conceptual nuclear experiment under the Vela Uniform program intended to further evaluate the mechanism of seismic decoupling. Vela Uniform is a Department of Defense program to improve this country's capability to detect, locate and identify underground nuclear detonations. This program evolved from recommendations of the Panel on Seismic Improve¬ment, (Berkner Panel), an officially appointed group of noted U. S. scientists. This Panel, taking note of difficulties in detecting the differences between some underground nuclear detonations and some earthquakes recommended a program of increased basic research in seismology. The theory of decoupling, Which involves possible reducing of seismic motion resulting from underground explosions by reducing the coupling or physical linkage between the explosion and the geologic environment, was investigated by Dr. Albert latter and his associates at RAND during the late 1950's. The concept has been further investigated theoretically by scientists of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and the Sandia Laboratory. The theory has been tested experimentally under Vela Uniform Projects Cowboy, Dribble and Sterling. The Salmon Event of Project Dribble was a tamped (with the explosive in firm contact with the geologic formation) nuclear detonation 2700 feet below ground in the Tatum Salt Dome. Project Payette, if found to be feasible and if authorized for actual execution, would become a decoupled experiment in the same environment.

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

The A. P. Green Refractories Co. operates clay mines in ten states. Eight of these states have reclamation laws with which we have to comply and indications are that the U. S. Congress will pass a federal surface mining reclamation act in the near future. These regulations, in addition to the value of land in most areas, dictate that mining and reclamation be considered as a single operation. In many instances the land may be more valuable after properly planned mining and reclamation than before. Refractory clay, commonly called "fire clay" is defined as a siliceous clay rich in hydrous aluminum silicates, capable of withstanding high temperatures. It is deficient in iron, calcium, and alkalies and approaches kaolin on composition. Refractory clay is much more limited in occurrence and usage than common clay or shale. During 1971, common clays and shales were mined in 47 states with a total production of 45 million tons. Fire clay production was reported in 22 states with a total production of only slightly over 3 million tons.(1) Many of these producing areas are extremely limited in extent and production. Several are contained within a one or two county area. This reflects the unique geological conditions required for the formation or development of fire clay. The major fire clay producing areas in the United States are shown in Figure 1.

In a recent issue of the Mining Congress Journal, J. L. Gilliland discussed the relationship of air quality criteria, standards, and regu¬lations (1). As he pointed out, The Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged with issuing "Air Quality Criteria" which are statements concerning the concentration-effects relationship of an air pollutant. These "criteria" provide the states with a basis for their air quality "standards," which may lead in turn to emission "regulations." He further cites a list of major factors described by the National Air Pollution Control Administration, which must be considered in developing criteria. These are: properties of pollution; responses; measurement methods; exposure parameters; and characteristics of receptors. Although we briefly discuss the first two items, the principal concern of this paper is with the third item, the methods of measurements. In attempting to define responses, it has proven surprisingly difficult to establish a clear-cut cause-effect relationship between air pollutants and impairment of health. It is perhaps not too surprising that the ecological approach currently in fashion seems to be a much more powerful tool in defining cause-effects relationships. Without belaboring the point, we would like to point out that establishing such cause-effect relationships have tremendous legal and financial implications e.g., consider the possible establishment of such a relationship between pollution and inadvertent weather modification.

Construction of the North Hollywood line of the Los Angeles Metro System required crossing the Hollywood Fault as the twin transit tunnels extend into the San Fernando Valley. The Hollywood Fault is considered active and represents the largest active fault that the North Hollywood Redline extension will cross. The feature is a thrust fault with the north plate overriding the southern plate and creating the Santa Monica Mountains in the process. South of the fault lies the alluvial valley and Hollywood. North of the fault are the Santa Monica Mountains which rise locally to more than 1200 feet. The average overburden at the seismic section is about 300feet and is overlain by Runyon Canyon Park, a municipal park with environmentally sensitive areas. The actual fault plane was anticipated to lie within the southernmost120 feet of the 600 to 700-foot-wide fault zone. The special seismic section constructed for the tunnels consisted of an enlarged cross-section with special lining, drainage and finish features that will facilitate the restoration of metro service in case of a major event occurring on the Hollywood Fault. The discussion will address the geology, the procedure used to define the design event and predicted displacements, the unique design features as well as the construction methods used and the instrumentation and the results obtained.

Introduction The usefulness of microscopes in exploration and ore dressing, problems has been documented for the older generation of mining industry personnel in such publications as Schneiderhohn and Ramdohr (1931). A more recent publication that examines the subject is Process Mineralogy, a conference proceedings of The Metallurgical Society (TMS, 1981). However, it is worthwhile to review some of the principles and advantages of microscopic examination of rocks, ores, and mill products. Transmitted light Microscopists can look at materials in transmitted or reflected light. Studying transmitted light is what is usually meant by petrography. In this method, the light passes through the specimen. The upper polarizing filter can be moved in (crossed nicols) or out (open nicols) of the light path. The specimen can be a thin section, a slice of rock mounted on a glass slide and ground to 30 µm (>400 mesh). Or, it can be a sample of rock or ore crushed to about 70 µm (200 mesh). Transmitted light study is particularly suited to gangue minerals, such as quartz, carbonates, and feldspars, and to the study of alteration processes and products. It has some applications to liberation studies. Minerals are identified in transmitted light by observable and measurable optical parameters, such as cleavage and twinning. As indicated on the official conference program, this presentation in not a formal one, but a synopsis of the activities of a newly created Sub-committee of the Research Council on Underground Construction, which involves itself with small diameter tunnels. Because there is a dire need to develop a system of excavating small horizontal openings at shallow depths without interrupting traffic, it was hoped that a more progress report could be reported at this time. Because of ecological and environmental considerations, laws are being passed which mandate that all utilities be placed underground. In urban areas the excavation of trenches in which these utilities are placed has been done by disrupting the normal flow of traffic, thereby creating complete chaos. In addition, it always seems that the Companies involved have no coordination, since one company completes its installation and another one begins. Certainly, utility tunnels can be driven at greater depths to house main feeder and trunk lines, but there still remains the problem of installing distribution lines for house services. The definition of a "mini" tunnel, is a tunnel whose excavated size is approximately 48 in. or less. The objectives of the Committee are to "stimulate the development of systems and equipment to build tunnels in these size ranges which will reduce costs, time and surface disruption from current systems."

Research and development of tunneling technology is rapidly taking its rightful place as an important ingredient in the Nation's research and development strategy. The state of technology in tunneling is very important to the Federal Government. Through its support, both direct and indirect, of a wide range of public works, our government, using the taxpayer's money, is the biggest buyer of tunnels. So that this money is spent wisely and efficiently, it is important that potential developments in tunneling technology that promise lower cost tunnels be pursued, if the cost of reaching the goals is commensurate with the prospective benefits. For too many years, the Federal Government's activities in the tunneling technology field were fragmented. Recently, specific coordination efforts have been initiated. It may surprise some to realize that the total Federal expenditure on excavation technology research and development, which is largely devoted to underground excavation, is growing by leaps and bounds. In fiscal year 1971 alone, approximately $19 million were expended by Federal agencies. This current fiscal year (FY 1972) that amount will increase to $24 million. It would appear that next year we will exceed the 1972 expenditure by 52 percent to bring the total FY 1973 expenditure up to $36 million. There are many carbon-in-pulp and resin-in-pulp screening devices which are at present in use in the South African mining industry. Each one of these screens has been an improvement, from the very basic air cleaned and 'EPAC' types which were either circumferential or · diametrical launder screens, which were developed for C I P in the early 1980's, through to the more sophisticated LAP and Kambalda Screens. Each one of these screens not only increased the performance or throughput per square metre than its predecessor, but also addressed maintenance problems, wear, reliability and the ability to handle surge conditions, thereby preventing tank overflow. However, very little theory has been presented concerning, the flow of pulp through internal screens, carbon loss and screen wear rates. Almost all this information is based on empirical data. The NKM screen continued this trend and was able to offer flow rates in excess of 180 cubic metres per square metre of screen per hour and an average screen life of approximately six months. However, with increasing sophistication of the screen and the use of wedge wire as opposed to the normal woven wire, the mass was significantly increased and costs began to mount. Therefore, Mixtec undertook to develop a radically different screen, which incorporated many of the advantages of .the existing equipment and combined a few of its own.

A century of experience with mechanical excavation machines is beginning to pay dividends to the mining industry. Mining is moving from mechanical excavators to mechanical miners. These mechanical mining systems are poised to make a significant impact on hard-rock mining, both underground and surface. Mechanical mining machines have had a long and successful career in coal and evaporites ("soft-rock") mining. Unlike most mechanical hard-rock mining, these systems actually mine ore. For example, the most productive underground method has been, arguably, longwall mining. Mechanical excavation machines are mostly used in civil tunneling or in driving mine openings such as vent shafts. Civil tunneling is a notable mechanical excavation success. Even with its high capital cost, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can drive kilometers (miles) of tunnel at very low cost. In hard-rock mining, mechanical excavators bore tunnels, raises and shaft openings in the mine, but rarely mine ore. Like the soft-rock miners, their contribution to mining is important and their development must continue. Generally, they are used as excavators not miners. Current trends guarantee development of true general-purpose hard rock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become a complete mining system and will determine the design of the mine. Mechanical methods will reward the operator with lower costs and high productivity.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. In a process-oriented production environment, the first objective of any plant engineering effort is to safely produce sufficient product output with an existing plant layout to provide a profitable return to the plant owners and stable employment for plant employees. In such an environment, the terminology macro-engineering means looking at a plant from a perspective beyond "putting out routine fires" or "keeping the plant running." It means asking questions like: • What are the current equipment bottlenecks in the existing plant? • What portion of the plant is most sensitive to fluctuations in raw feed characteristics or other processing condition changes? • If one had X dollars to spend beyond routine maintenance, how could it be best spent to have the greatest impact on overall plant profitability? • What portions of the plant do we know least about? While these questions may seem obvious, they often go unasked due to time pressures, limitations on people or other resources and poor profitability of the existing plant. Even when the questions are asked, frequently a high level of personal bias or a lack of accurate information lead to less than optimal answers and sometimes a lack of confidence in engineering technology. Therefore, in a majority of process plants, there has been little serious change in the equipment layout or engineering operation practice since the start-up of the original plant design.

Cyprus Miami Mining Corp. has a history of overcoming adversity through innovation and adaptation to changing conditions. Requirements to remain profitable in the 1990s include a combination of advanced technology, employee involvement and training, attention to customer satisfaction, environmental awareness and quality management. The Miami property is located in the Globe-Miami area of Arizona, 130 km (80 miles) east of Phoenix and 160 km (100 miles) north of Tucson. The complex is located in a high desert environ¬ment at an elevation of 1065 m (3500 ft). The region receives about 480 mm (19 in.) of precipitation annually. History Mineralization at the Miami property was first discovered in the 1880s, which led to underground mining of copper by the 1890s. In 1911, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. was formed by combining the Inspiration and Live Oak Mines. Full-scale production began in 1915. Block caving methods were used at both mines. Open-pit mining commenced in 1948. Underground mining had ceased by 1954, and all production was obtained from surface operations. Innovation has been the key to Miami's success. Development of sulfide flotation and the ferric cure process for vat leaching were advanced at Miami. In situ leaching of oxide material, remaining after block caving had removed the sulfide ore, was also used.

Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title.

At Sifto Canada's Goderich salt mine near Goderich, Ontario, the stress control method of mining was introduced to overcome increasing roof failure problems. After successful testing, the conventional room-and-pillar mining method was converted entirely to the stress control method. This conversion has successfully stabilized the ground, increasing the extracton ratio from 38% to 50%. At the same time, it reduced the ground control and rehabilitation cost by more than 80%. The success of the conversion is due to the quantitative technique of mine analysis that was developed to ensure that the conversion was safe and reliable. A finite element model of the ground was constructed to predict and validate the safety of the stress controlled mine opening. A system of in situ stress-property measurement instruments was developed to obtain input data for the computer model as well as to evaluate its output quantitatively with regard to time and location. History of roof problems Severe roof safety problems have been encountered at Goderich Mine since it opened in 1959. These problems continued into the 1980s. Following excavation, the roof strata started to deteriorate by slabbing. Even after roof rehabilitation, deterioration continued to progressively higher roof elevations, requiring repeated rehabilitation. The operational impact of these roof failures was severe, ranging from a considerable safety hazard to major production interruptions.

The liners are the most important part in the SAG mill operation. Hence, the liners and their design parameters are primarily studied to see its effect on SAG mill operations. Effective liner designs are directed to reduce downtimes, which is needed for the replacement of worn liners. There exists constant chance of improvement in the capacity of mill by studying the effect of liner design on the charge motion inside the mill. This need is satisfied by three-dimensional discrete element code "Millsoft", which uses Discrete Element Method (DEM) to analyze the motion of charge. This simulation of SAG mill keeps track of all the moving bodies like ball and rock and observes its interaction with liners and lifters. The recent work done on this software helps generating mill to more reality by putting conical wall at feed and discharge end, over the earlier flat walls. Millsoft is an effective tool to watch the change in the motion of the charge due to different types of lifter bars and different design parameters. It was concluded that by simply increasing chord length between the lifters and increasing the face angle of the lifters, capacity of the mill could be increased. On the other hand, this software can also be used to get power draft at the respective mill design.

INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco's Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970's, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. This study deals with the mineralogical-geochemical characteristics and the industrial usage of the olivine from the dunites that crop out on the west of the Topuk village (Orhaneli). Mineralogical compositions of non-altered dunite samples are averagely as: Olivine (>90%), serpentine (1-4 %), opaque minerals especially chromite, magnetite, pyrite (1-3 %), and secondary minerals as magnesite, chlorite (1-2 %). X-Ray Diffractograms of the dunite samples indicate that olivines are in forsterite (93 on an average) composition, and chlinochrysotile and lizardite accompany to the forsterite. Chemical analyses of the dunites show that MgO, SiO2, Fe-,03 and LOI contents vary from 40,99 to 50,2 %, 34,67 to 40,6 %, 6,8 tol3,7 %, 0,11 to 11,27 %, respectively. SE-TAT Mining Company states that the study area has 400.000.000 tonnes proved, 800.000.000 tonnes probable and totally 1.200.000.000 tonnes olivine reserve. Consequently, all studies indicate that Orhaneli Olivin has convenient mineralogical and chemical properties and the grain size (0.04-40 mm) for industrial usages such as abrasive, olivine sand products, steel slag conditioner, balast and covering material in industry: Orhaneli olivines are demanded especially from the firms related to refractory industry, iron-steel factories, naval forces and shipyards. SE-TAT Mining Company also exports these olivines to different countries such as Macedonian and Spain.
