Developed in 1983, High Angle Conveyors HAc®s, are proven versatile systems for elevating materials continuously from a lower to an upper level, Such systems may also be used to lower materials continuously. HACs have found commercial application in widely varying materials ( including coal, refuse, coarse ores, hot clinker, municipal sludge, wood chips, gypsum, slag, excavated earth, various grains and RDF), at widely varying throughput rates from 0.27 to 4,000 t/h. The conveying profiles have varied widely and elevating heights range from 3.66 m to 175 m. HACs have found application in coal, copper, gypsum and gold mining, coal preparation, in municipal waste treatment, rapid transit projects, pulp and paper mills, and cement plants, While noting a wide variety of applications in general, the present writing focuses on a very large HAG® system, consisting of eight (8) main HAG units to elevate nickel/copper ore continuously from under­ground, 1402 m (4600 ft,) vertically to the surface. Open pit limit analysis techniques of various types have been utilized for many years to design ultimate pit surfaces. In the last 15 years there have been many advances in the development of sophisticated computer methods to aid this process. The extensive capability of the computer has led to multiple alternative approaches to problem solving. Computerized open pit limit analysis methods can be applied to a broad scope of long-range and intermediate-range mine planning and design questions. A single computer run develops a pit design from a set of data. A set of nonsequential runs is used to evaluate changes in pit slopes, property restraints, and mineral model variables. Ore reserve economic sensitivity and intermediate-range mining plans can be developed using sequential computer runs. Present value methods are incorporated by using iterative sequential techniques. Multiple ore processes, dump leaching credits, and the trade-off between open pit and underground mining can also be handled. Many of the applications described are representative of current practice. The remainder are suggested extensions.

Blasthole drilling by todays standards is not a mature operation. In most mining appli¬cations, the blasthole drill rig is the least understood piece of machinery. Draglines, mining shovels, and haulage trucks may have more charisma, but the entire mining process starts with the drilling of blastholes to facilitate removal of the overburden and/or the primary material being mined. There are two (2) principal drilling methods them being rotary and percussion. In certain situations, percussion drilling is the most practical method, but for most applications, rotary drilling using the rotary tricone bit is the common and accepted drilling technique. While the drilling rig is on the surface and quite visible to everyone, it is really the object at the end of the drill pipe, the tricone bit, that is doing the work and drilling the hole. The rig supplies power to the bit and air to clean the hole. In addition, it must be capable of providing certain other functions and should be properly outfitted to adequately support the rotary tricone bit.

Task analyses were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at four underground low-seam coal mines to evaluate their supply-handling systems and for use in subsequent design of laboratory simulation experiments. Items were tracked (by videotaping) from delivery to the surface storage areas to their final destinations underground. Of particular interest were those tasks that required manual handling of supplies or equipment. Analysis of the videotapes revealed that the miners handled materials while stooped over a total of 37.8 pct of the time, 31.5 pct while on both knees and 9.5 pct while kneeling on one knee. These working postures impose considerable stress on the lumbar spine and may be implicated in the high number of back injuries in this work population. This paper also discusses various mechanical-assist devices developed by the Bureau and successfully evaluated in the underground workplace. These devices can be used to minimize the manual effort and the corresponding risk of injury associated with handling supplies and equipment components in low-seam coal mines.

The determination of the air quality needs to dilute diesel exhaust gases to a safe level must be individually evaluated for particular cases. One such case is when diesel-powered vehicles are working in long dead- end headings with forcing auxiliary ventilation. The vehicles perform specific operations in a cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has a vital influence on environmental conditions in the working area and in the rest of the heading. Recent studies on diesel gas behavior in long headings have shown a zone of increased concentration of pollutants (accumulation) between the face and the mouth of the heading. To be able to control these accumulations of pollutants, use of the concept of planned air discharge by using the Coanda-type ducts is proposed. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate an application of computer simulation of that process. It is shown that, by planning the additional air discharge, the concentration of diesel gases can meet required limits along the heading.

World demand of sulphur-in-all-forms (SAF), which in 1985 is estimated to total 57.5 million tonnes S equivalent, is expected to increase to 77.6 million tonnes S by the year 2000. Key factors are the evolution of sulphur demand in the USSR, China, and the developing countries notably India, Brazil, and the countries in North Africa and the Near East with vertically integrated phosphate industries. Brimstone will remain the dominant sulphurous raw material notwithstanding the progressive increase in the supply and use of sulphur in other forms resulting mainly from the enhanced recovery df pollution sulphur and the increased use of sulphur in pyrites in those countries with this sulphur resource. Sulphur demand for phosphate fertilizer manufacture is expected to have the main impact on world sulphur demand, but in contrast to the industrially advanced countries where non- fertilizer sulphur use is not expected to increase measurably, this demand sector is expected to be of some importance in those developing countries with dynamic economies and in the centrally planned economies of East Europe and the Far East.

In the early 1900s, vat leaching was a common process for treating gold ores. It was, however, labor intensive and was abandoned in the 1930s. Technology advances in recent years, though, have caused vat leaching to once again become a viable alternative in precious metal processing. At least three plants have been built. Others are being considered as alternatives to agitation and heap leaching. What is vat leaching? Vat leaching is a process in which ore is crushed and screened to a size of between 6 to 12 mm ( 0.25 to 0.5 in.) This crushed ore is placed in a large, boxlike container where an alkaline-cyanide solution is added and later removed. The process might be likened to indoor, controlled heap leaching. The ore does not require fine grinding in a ball mill. Therefore, capital and operating costs are lower than agitation treatment. But the extra handling causes costs to be slightly higher than heap leaching. If any amount of fines is present, the ore should be agglomerated.

A concentrate biooxidation process was successfully demon­strated in the field in a remote part of northwestern Mexico. A 275 tonne (300 st) biooxidation heap was constructed using GeoBiotics' proprietary GEOCOAT™ coated concentrate process. The pyrite/chalcopyrite/sphalerite concentrate was bioox­idized in the heap for 60 days. Cyanide leach recovery of the con­centrate increased from 68% gold recovery at a cyanide consump­tion of 1.6 kg NaCN/g Au (llO lbs/oz) in the as-received concen­trate, to 94% gold recovery at a cyanide consumption of 0.37 kg NaCN/g Au (27 lbs/oz) in the biooxidized concentrate. The heap was constructed at a rate of7 tonnes (7.5 st) concentrate per hour, using typical heap leach equipment and easily scalable methods. Heap operations demonstrated that energy dissipation in the humid summer environment was easily controlled by low pressure aeration and management of solution chemistry and application. Observations of the demonstration heap appear to support the presence of reflux of moisture within the biooxidation heap.

Electronic data processing' is becoming a necessary part of all large mining operations. Accountants, geologists, mining engineers, samplers, and truck drivers are needed to operate a mine. So appear to be systems analysts, computer operators, and software engineers. Trucks, loaders, and drills must be used to extract useful material from the ground. So must be mainframe and microcomputers, plotters, digitizers, and computer terminals. The papers presented in this section describe experience gained in Europe, Australia, and North and South America. The mining and data processing environments and the size of the companies vary significantly, but the conclusions drawn are often strikingly similar. Common answers to often-asked questions can be summarized as follows: - Why invest in data processing? The main reason is that information systems can supply accurate and timely information for better decision-making. Other reasons are mentioned including, to speed-up the processing of large volumes of information, to perform operations which cannot be performed manually, or to reduce costs. But all of these reasons appear ancillary to that of supplying accurate and timely information.

Quarrying is an important activity as it significantly contributes to the economy of a country. This activity presupposes the destruction of the natural vegetation, the removal of the surface soil and deposition of inactive materials. The lack of fertile soil in these disturbed areas is usually a problem for the plant cover establishment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of the establishment of ten herbaceous plant species to inactive quarries with the use of limited amount of fertile soil. The research was conducted in the area of the quarries of the cement manufacture company ?TITAN?, Thessaloniki, Greece. On a terrace of one of the quarries, a 2 cm layer of fertile soil was placed. In early October 2007, the herbaceous species, Lolium rigidum, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Agropyrum desertorum, Phalaris aquatica, Dactylis glomerata, Medicago sativa, Medicago lupulina, Sanguisorba minor and Phacelia tanacetifolia, were seeded separately. The first results indicated that among the tested species Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea and Phacelia tanacetifolia had the highest establishment capability.

One of the core tenets of Sustainable Development is transparency and information sharing, i.e., government and corporate reporting. Governments report on issues within their sphere of responsibility to the degree that their constituents demand that they do so. Firms undertake reporting for two reasons: they are required to do so by law, and doing so makes good business sense. In recent years, stakeholders have come to see themselves as having a right to information about government actions and business operations that have the potential to affect their lives, health, community and environment. As a result, disparate groups, including industry associations, non-profit groups, academics, and individual firms, attempted to lay out what governments and firms should report. There are many types of sustainability reporting. In this paper we focus on three of them that both governments and firms utilize. We discuss the benefits of each. We argue that while the goal of complete and perfect data is not achievable or feasible, sustainability reporting of all three types is necessary to ensure that sound public and private decisions are made.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyure¬thane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft - are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety.

Will Rogers unwittingly commented on the essence of evaluations when he said: "We don't know what they don't know!" In so doing, he explained why managers have an obligation to verify that their personnel really know what is expected of them. Rogers further stated that "What we know may not be so!" Here, he suggests that managers must establish the correctness of facts on which they make decisions concerning the future of their organizations. Yet, there are some managers who may not have considered this basic wisdom. These are perhaps the ones who shun a solid, fact-finding evaluation. Instead, they trust to guesswork as a basis for attempting improvement. Without realizing it, they may be making incorrect decisions harmful to the very organization they are trying to improve. Unfortunately, an attitude of avoiding evaluations often permeates whole organizations when their managers fail to appreciate their importance. Recently, the following was found prominently displayed in the office of a maintenance manager. Regrettably, the facts of a subsequent evaluation established how imprudent his attitude was:

When an economic mineral deposit is first discovered, it is almost immediately defined in terms of tonnage and grade. As exploration and assessment continue, the initial definition is ordinarily qualified by such terms as "proven," "probable" and so on. Even at this stage, the fundamental philosophies of the discoverers may manifest themselves in conservative or optimistic views of the deposit's potential. It is unusual, however, for the philosophies to be expressed in terms of metallurgical performance criteria at such an early stage unless the ore is very unusual in its chemistry or mineralogy. Even before drilling is completed, the first mining plans appear, with or without the benefit of metallurgical test data. This is the point at which management philosophies can have some of their greatest impacts. In ideal cases, where large, uniform ore bodies can be developed and mined according to assay cutoffs, the conventional philosophy of maximizing tonnage while minimizing cost can be followed without much metallurgical difficulty. In July 1986, the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) asked Secretary of Labor William Brock to form an advisory committee to advise the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on rules and regulations concerning the use of diesel powered equipment in underground coal mines. The request was made under the Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977. The union's principal concern was with the chronic and acute health effects of breathing diesel exhaust. In July 1988, the advisory committee recommended that MSHA promulgate a variety of health and safety regulations. It also concluded that diesel particulate matter should be considered carcinogenic (MSHA, 1988). Now, seven years later, there are nearly twice as many pieces of diesel powered equipment in underground coal mines. MSHA, however, has not promulgated a single regulation to govern the use of this equipment. MSHA must fulfill its public responsibility to protect the health of miners. Regulations that take account of the considerable body of knowledge concerning these health effects must be a top priority of the incoming assistant secretary of labor for MSHA.

In this paper, the compressive strengths, failure modes and acoustic emission behaviors of cubic coal specimens containing bedding planes at various inclinations are considered. Test results showed that the compressive strengths and the modes of failure of coal specimens depend on the inclination of the bedding planes. From the acoustic emission (AE) measurements, the count rate detected through a low-pass window (AE (L)) was compared with that through a high-pass window (AE (H)) in each test. The results of accumulated AE history were compared with AE signatures of others. It is shown that the AE signature of coal depends on the inclination of the bedding planes, and the AE signatures can be classified into three groups. Each group corresponds to a particular mode of failure, namely, slip on the bedding planes, fracture across the bedding planes and fracture extension through the bedding planes. The parameter r, defined as the ratio of AE (L)/ [AE (L) + AE (H)], is plotted against the stress for each test. Test results showed that r also depends upon the inclination of the bedding planes.

INTRODUCTION Upflow Solids Contact Clarification is a process long employed in the treatment of potable water, wastewater and municipal sewage. This process incorporated in a fiberglass conical structure seems to offer an economical solution to problems encountered in reduction of particulates in uranium effuents. CONCEPT OF UPFLOW CLARIFICATION Use of suspended solids contact units date back to the 1930's. These types of units produced by Infilco and the Permutit Company, among others, were used in the Lime-Soda softening process to precipitate calcium and magnesium salts from hard water. In general, the process operated as follows: (a) Raw water entered a central chamber where it was mixed with chemicals. The chamber had provisions for agitating and circulating the chemicals so that mixing and reaction zones were formed. (b) The water, precipitated chemicals, floc and turbidity flows to a clarification chamber (the Permutit precipitator used a truncated cone). In most cases the influent then passes upward through a blanket of suspended floc and other solids before it leaves the chamber at effluent weirs or launders.

Peabody Western Coal Co. operates two mines in northern Arizona. The Black Mesa and Kayenta coal mines are unique for several reasons. They both have only two customers: Southern California Edison’s Mohave generating station near Laughlin, NV and the Navajo generating station near Page, AZ. Both mines are close together. Between the two, they ship nearly 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of coal. Material is shipped to the power stations in two ways. This first is a 440- km-long (273-mile-long) underground slurry pipeline, the longest in the world. The second is an 11 -km-long (17-mile- long) long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped by train from the storage silos to the plant sites. Another factor makes these mines unusual. They are both situated in the middle of the 68,795km2 (17 million- acre) Navajo Reservation, home to the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe members. Nearly 90% of the Black Mesa and Kayentamines’ 850 employees are tribe members. Peabody Western Coal is the United States’ largest private employer of Native Americans.

Finely-ground hematitic ore, too high in silica (quartz) to be commercially viable, was treated by emulsion flotation. A three-component emulsion mixture was used at temperatures ranging from ambient (22° C) to 30° C, 40° C, 49 °C, 59° C and 68° C. The optimal emulsion dosage and composition at ambient temperature were used to determine that dosage for higher-temperature flotation tests. The crushed ore (100%, -8 mesh) was repeatedly washed with tap water, and the filtrate's ionic content was analyzed. The separation efficiency values (a measure of the selective separation and concentration of hematite from gangue minerals) demonstrated temperature dependence, with marked increases at temperatures above ambient. The optimal separation efficiency occurred within the range from 30° C to 60° C. The improved separation efficiencies at temperatures exceeding ambient are explained by quartz depression. This depression is attributed to: • the precipitation of quartz-activating cations, principally calcium and magnesium, at increasing temperature; and • temperature's effect on the collector's solubility and attachment to the aqueous hematite surface.
