Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. This GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. It facilitates optimal siting and querying of service installations and refuge chambers relative to production centers. GIS's proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

By-product metals can be a significant source of revenue for a mining operation if their recovery can be accomplished without negatively impacting primary metal recovery. The main problem encountered in separating primary and secondary metals is to selectively control the solubility of the individually important metals with¬out affecting their ultimate recoverability As a class of hydrometallurgical chemicals, peroxygens have a versatility which permits the selective recovery of individual metal species. The nature of surface sites for the adsorption of gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using samples of synthetic, highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). This HOPG material offers an idealized graphite structure enabling the independent study of the graphitic basal-plane sites and the edges, or defect sites, of the graphitic planes. Radiochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments independently demonstrated that gold adsorption was much higher on the edges (defects) of the graphite planes than on the planes themselves. These results suggest that site-specific adsorption is prevalent in the adsorption of gold by graphitic carbons (including activated carbon, carbon black and graphite) and that most of the favored sites are at edge defects in the graphite crystal structure.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ mining (ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits. It used light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and textural features of these samples. This included the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channel ways. Low-grade disseminated deposit types from the western US were found to contain fracture- hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data in order to understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching the ore minerals.

The apparent absence of significant Tertiary auriferous palaeoplacers in the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia can be explained by the dissolution of the placer gold into the highly saline, acid, oxidising ground waters which currently occur in upper portions of the palaeochannels proximal to the gold sources. The dissolved gold has then been redeposited in redox fronts further downstream. The placer gold is preserved in more distal portions where the ground waters are reducing. Exploration for these placers can be effective using the gravity contrasts that exist between the Tertiary sediments and the Archaean bedrock and SIROTEM which can detect the highest salinity zones which occur in the deepest parts of the channels. Final assessment of the gold content of the sediments must be determined by drilling.

The problem of testing different production strategies has been studied in relation to reserves selection and a computer programme for ore production management has been developed. The case study presented concerns an underground rock salt mine in Sicily with different product lines and variable ore characteristics. A geostatistical block model of the deposit was constructed on the basis of the physical and chemical parameters that ultimately determine the type of end-product in operations according to different selection strategies were simulated using the model and taking account of both technical and 'commercial constraints. The structure of an ore production management programme running on a PC to select both the mining unit and the end-use of the ore is described.

This paper is the first preliminary report on the bauxites and terra rossas of the Caribbean. It concentrates on the islands of the Greater Antilles, and for reference purposes the Yucatan Penin- sula is included. At this point, observations made in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are compared with reported information on Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Yucatan Peninsula with regard to occurrence, as well as physical, chemical, and mineralogical composition. From this, an attempt is made at classifying the types of bauxites in the Caribbean, indicating the best reserves estimates, and the process ability of these bauxites. Some suggestions are also provided to fuel the controversy over the likely source material(s) or origin of the Caribbean bauxites.

Between 1991 and 1994, metallurgical residues from a pressure-oxidation autoclave at the Campbell Au-quartz mine at Red Lake, northern Ontario, were neutralized with dolomite-rich flotation tailings and were deposited in a polyethylene-lined disposal area. Mineralogical analysis indicates that most of the As occurs as a crystalline ferric sulfarsenate, and some is associated with Fe oxides and with K-H3O jarosite. Field pore-water geochemical data from 1994 and 1995 showed increases in Fe(II) and As(III) concentrations, suggesting that the sulfarsenate and jarosite are dissolving; none of the discrete As phases included in a thermodynamic database limit dissolved-As concentrations, and these concentrations may continue to increase. These results demonstrate the potential for Fe and As loading through groundwater systems.

A consortium of Canadian mining companies, engineering firms and the Ontario Government has supported Hydrochem's efforts in the last year to design and cost a 10 tpd NITROX PROCESS® demonstration plant. A 5 kg per hour mini plant was installed at the Hydrochem facilities in Brampton, Ontario. This paper describes design testwork on Dickenson Mines arsenopyrite concentrate and application of the findings to the demonstration plant flowsheet. The control of nitrates in discard solids and stack gases is discussed in detail. Nitric acid oxidation of arsenopyrite results in significant ele- mental sulphur formation, enough for it to be detrimental to sub- sequent cyanidation. Flowsheet variations aimed at dealing with this process characteristic are discussed and testwork results on one option (hot liming) are described.

As part of a project funded by the US EPA, through the Western Governors' Association, the recent literature on the prediction of acid drainage from metal mine wastes was reviewed. Static tests such as Acid Base Accounting, Modified Acid Base Accounting, B. C. Research Initial Test, and APP:S Test attempt to quantify the total capacities for a mine waste to produce and consume acid. In kinetic tests (e.g. humidity cells, soxhlet extraction, elevated temperature oxidation, column tests, batch reactor tests, B. C. Research Confirmation Test) mine waste samples are subjected to oxidation and the resultant drainage pH is assumed to reflect that of mine wastes dissolving in the field. This paper summarizes information presented in the recent literature on static tests.

By-products from mining and processing plants and coal-fired power plants are being utilized more as valuable resources in Virginia. Mining-related by- products are divided into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation, and those generated from mineral processing or from industrial plants. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where by-products have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include coal- combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash), lime-kiln dust, flue-gas-desulfurization residue, rock fines, magnetite, Cold Spring clay (kaolin), Austinville tailings, soapstone rock, and calcium-carbonate paste. Some of these by-products have never been utilized, although several ideas have been investigated over the years.

The West Side CSO Tunnel, Pump Station & Pipeline Project is currently beginning construction along the downtown waterfront of Portland, Oregon. This4.3 meter diameter, 5,500 meter-long soft ground tunnel will be driven along the westbank of the Willamette River adjacent to buildings and utilities and several major pile-supported bridges. High groundwater pressure, extended lengths of gravel to cobble-size alluvium, and the need to control ground loss and surface settlements were key considerations in the selection of slurry tunnel boring machines for the project This paper presents an overview of the numerical modeling that was performed during design to estimate the strains and additional loads in the pile-supported structures and to assess the efficiency of proposed mitigation measures.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

Introduction Screening is defined as a mechanical process which separates particles on the basis of their size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. The key element in this method of particle sizing is obviously the screening surface, the medium that contains the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Populations of Bacillus cereus spores are elevated in soils over four subsurface gold deposits in the western United States. Large deposit-to-background ratios of B. cereus populations were obtained in soil traverses over the Minnesota vein deposit, Empire District, Colorado (maximum 50:1); the Shasta (maximum 3,500:1), and Evening Star maximum 18,000:1) vein deposits, Shasta County, California; and the Hog Ranch disseminated gold deposit (maximum 40,000:1) in Washoe County, Nevada. Small increases in the concentration of toxic metals in the soil may be responsible for the elevated spore populations. The observed elevation of B. cereus spore populations near these gold deposits indicates that the method should be further investigated as a potential exploration tool.

INTRODUCTION Effective mine ventilation is required to maintain a healthy underground environment for humans. Without effective ventilation, the environment can become unhealthy or hazardous as a result of the depletion of oxygen, contamination with toxic gases, or the buildup of an excessive amount of particulate matter (dust). Each contaminant has an upper limit of concentration that should not be exceeded within an 8-hr period. This is known as the threshold limit value (TLV). The TLV represents an acceptable level of exposure that should produce no ill effects. Unfortunately, more than one contaminant may be present at any one time and the effects of the individual contaminants may be additive, i.e., the effects of each contaminant must be considered simultaneously to determine the potential danger to miners. Possibly the greatest threat to mine-air quality is the uncontrolled underground use of the diesel engine. The diesel engine was invented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel. His intention was to develop a power source that could burn coal dust as a fuel, but he was unsuccessful in that attempt and had to resort to liquid petroleum fuels (Johnson, 1975). In 1898, the diesel engine was intro¬duced into the United States by Adolphus Busch, who anticipated using it as a prime mover in factories and generating plants. At that time, the diesel engine was a very large and very heavy engine, designed for fixed installations. By 1919, lighter engines were being developed, and by 1931, Caterpillar was marketing a diesel-powered, track-type tractor (Henderson, 1975). Since 1931, the diesel engine has evolved into an extremely popular prime mover in medium and heavy-duty applications. Efficiencies now are on the order of 40% and improvements such as turbocharging and aftercooling have produced engines capable of generating power at a ratio of 0.3 kW/kg (1.0 hp per 5.0 lb) of engine weight. Although the diesel engine is relatively efficient as a mobile power plant, it is far from efficient in terms of the energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. About 60% of the heat value of the fuel leaves the engine as wasted heat, with about 50% of that heat being emitted through the exhaust pipe and the other 50% being emitted through the radiator or cooling fins. Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor (H_0), carbon dioxide (CO_), and nitro¬gen (N2) as the byproducts. Since the diesel is not a perfect engine, each pound of fuel burned generates 5.6 m° (200 cu ft) of exhaust gas, containing about 0.009 m3 (0.33 cu ft) of carbon monoxide (CO), 0.009 m' (0.33 cu ft) of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, and NOD), and 0.57 m3 (20 cu ft) of carbon dioxide. The balance of the exhaust emission consists of free nitrogen and water vapor (Hurn, 1975). Contrary to popular belief, the diesel is not inherently dirty. Under normal operating conditions, a well-maintained engine neither smokes nor smells. However, the same well-maintained engine can and does produce toxic emissions. A diesel engine is not inherently safe and constitutes a distinct hazard to personnel. This chapter is devoted to a description of the various toxic substances that may be generated by a diesel engine. Although some of these substances may also be produced by blasting or natural causes, the focus of this chapter is on the relationship between the internal- combustion compression-ignition engine (the diesel) and the quality of the mine air. CARBON MONOXIDE Combustion Process During the combustion process (burning) of organic fuels, each atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen, provided that a surplus of oxygen atoms is available. Thus, the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Most open flames, such as trash fires, camp fires, gas ranges, etc., produce carbon dioxide. However, with insufficient oxygen, incomplete combustion results as the carbon atoms each combine with one atom of oxygen to produce toxic carbon monoxide. Burning charcoal briquettes produce carbon monoxide because the combustion takes place inside the briquettes where sufficient oxygen is not available to the combustion process. Internal-combustion engines, whether burning gasoline or diesel fuel, also produce carbon monoxide. The only oxygen available to the combustion process is that trapped within the cylinder. If the amount of fuel delivered to the cylinder is excessive, there is insufficient oxygen for complete combustion and carbon monoxide production results. In a normally aspirated (nonturbocharged) diesel engine, the amount of air "sucked" into a cylinder is the same on every intake stroke, resulting in complete combustion only at low levels of engine loading, when small amounts of fuel are injected. Higher levels of engine loading cause larger amounts of fuel to be injected into the same volume of air in the cylinder. Unless the volume of air is increased, the combustion process becomes progressively less complete as the amount of fuel increases. Turbocharged engines are able to compensate some¬what for increased loading and increased fuel consumption. The turbocharger acts as a compressor for the intake air, forcing a larger volume of air into the cylinders as the engine speed increases. Hence the turbocharged engine burns cleaner than a naturally aspirated engine and produces slightly less carbon monoxide (Marshall and Fleming, 1971). Much of the underground equipment used today is powered by turbocharged indirect-injection diesel engines. Although these engines emit fewer toxic contaminants than naturally aspirated engines, they do not eliminate the problem. Since the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gases, rapid accelerations can cause temporary overfueling of the engine until the turbocharger attains a speed sufficient to restore the correct air-to-fuel ratio. During this "turbocharger lag," the combustion cylinders contain insufficient oxygen, causing severe smoking and an increased output of carbon monoxide.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (1), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profitability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus minimum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12). Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-lowgrade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). Discussion by G. Sanders The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominantlithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below. Missing the high-grade part of the ore body In your statistical analysis, you directly compare the reverse circulation assays to the diamond drill assays in Section 30. Two points argue against a direct comparison and suggest the differences are greater than the 3 % that you report. First, any core loss in a gold zone most likely means that the true gold values are greater. The drillers lost significant amounts of the clay-rich, Section-30 gold mineralization. Also, the initiated salt-mud system, an attempt to improve the core recovery, met with little success. Second, the practice of not sampling core geologically, but instead sampling on even 5-foot intervals, adds a deliberate dilution to the core assay values by including a portion of nonmineralized rock in the first and last samples of each high- grade intercept. The result is often a pair of low-grade assay values on either side of a high-grade gold zone. In reality, a high-grade gold zone has a very sharp assay wall that is often bounded by barren rock. This sampling method may make the diamond-drill core assays more like the reverse circulation values and may help explain the statistical similarities you found. However, it does not represent the true gold values in the high-grade parts of the deposit. You cannot deny that, by careful geological sampling of the drill core, higher and sharper assay values will be obtained. The low core recovery and the diamond-drill-core sampling method used act together to lower the diamond-core assay values. The 3% difference you found between the reverse-circulation and diamond-core assay values could be much larger when you consider what the true diamond-drill core values would be with optimum core recovery and a geologic sampling method for the core. Should statistics have been applied here? The statement "... that reverse circulation holes have overestimated the values of some ore zones and underestimated the values of others" (p. 345) is not correct. The subsampling confirmed what the cross sections hinted at in Section 30. Namely, beneath the high-grade zones, the reverse circulation holes created, by contamination, large intercepts of low-grade ore in regions of barren rock. Because the low-grade material was not there to begin with, this is not a process of overestimating low-grade mineralization. The next statement that "the average result is similar to that of the diamond drill holes" may apply to the data set numerically, but it is not true when viewed spatially on cross sections. Adjacent reverse circulation and diamond drill holes are almost impossible to correlate, high-grade zone values vary widely and many low-grade intercepts make no geologic sense. The subset sampling and cross sections presented in the first part of the paper show that the reverse circulation portion of the data set has some serious problems, as highlighted above, and should not have been dealt with statistically at all. Conclusion Each ore body is different, and each drilling method presents unique sampling problems. In this case, the diamond drill is the

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981).
