Anyone with geothermal experience can readily attest that geothermal operations are a natural extension of oil and gas operations. A geothermal company and an oil company need the same type of people to do the same kind of work. In the geothermal industry, geologists and geophysicists define prospects through surface geology, analysis of surface seeps, magnetics, gravity, and resistivity surveys - techniques similar to those used in the petroleum industry. In addition, shallow (250-ft) temperature gradient holes often are used in geothermal operations. Landmen take geothermal leases that are patterned after oil and gas leases. Exploratory drilling is done with the same drilling contractors and same drilling rigs, with minor modification. Drilling foremen and drilling engineers share the same objective of making the most hole, in the shortest time, at the least cost, with a proper completion. Petroleum engineers test the wells, design the completions, determine the reserves, make economic calculations, work with the tax assessor, and manage the reservoirs. Production engineers build roads, locations and pipelines, install gas/liquid separators and meters, and operate production and injection facilities. A contract to sell steam to a public utility is required. Various governmental regulations, permits, environmental concerns, and public affairs pose similar problems in both industries. Also required of both are top management people who are acquainted with geologic risk, prepared to accept million dollar dry holes, willing to bid competitively at lease sales, and able to invest large sums based on a technology not yet fully proven. Successful geothermal development requires in-depth financial ability similar to that required for petroleum development. The nonferrous industry has for many years maintained monitoring stations in agricultural areas in the vicinity of smelters to collect data concerning impact of smelter emission on agricultural crop production (Thomas and Cross, 1928). However, in 1967, the United States Congress passed the Clean Air Act which was amended in 1970 (Marchant, et al., 1977). The interpretation of this act by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made it necessary for the industry to install extensive real-time ambient sulfur dioxide (SO,) monitoring systems. This was only the tip of the iceberg. Since that time as a result of additional laws and agency directives, it is now necessary to monitor concentrations of a number of substances -in both air and water. And unless there is a major change in government thinking, this trend will continue during the decade of the eighties. It is difficult to estimate the full impact of these laws. Nevertheless, the impact is large and affects every person in the United States today (Anon., 1972; Rockefeller, 1971; Nelson, Yeager, and Guptill, 1973; and Anon., 1975). It prohibits the burning of trash and paper in most areas of the country. It increases the cost of transportation and the price of motor vehicles. It increases the, cost of nearly everything that is manufactured. In industries which compete in the international market, it reduces their competitive position. In some industries the environmental impact is felt on costs of goods sold in the vicinity of 25% of the total production costs. The major portion of these costs is not due to the monitoring systems but instead is due to the increased cost of production facilities, equipment, and raw materials in industries that are required to comply with environmental regulations.

Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are. the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread- sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin.

Part two of this three part series looks at explosives use in open-pit and underground mining operations. Part three, next month, will discuss the transportation, storage, handling, and destruction of explosives. Larger ore bodies, lower grade deposits, and more difficult geologic conditions have led to changes in blasting products, techniques, and field practices in both open-pit and underground metal mines. Pit blasting operations must consider the material's geology, needed fragmentation for the material, and hole diameter and depth-as well as the traditional consideration of the type of explosive used. With underground mines, various blasting aspects of burn, angle, and machine cuts must be considered for an efficient and safe operation. Of the factors related to open-pit blasting, geology of the material is most important. Many theories relating to sonic velocity and rock hardness are used to determine needed explosives ratios. Extensive field tests are necessary to determine these factors. In most cases, results assume that the material to be broken is homogenous. The drilling penetration rate is sometimes used as a guide to determine rock hardness; however, this is not necessarily a good idea. In many cases, a very hard, brittle rock will blast with less difficulty than a soft, spongy rock. The formation's stratification is also important. In thinly laminated horizontal seams, rock will usually break and adequately fragment with relatively large burdens and spacings using a low explosives ratio. Massive formations with few laminations require close burdens and spacings and a high explosives ratio. When the stratification is pitched on a severe angle, it is usually preferable to develop the pit face 90°-but no less than 45°-to the stratification. If the face must be developed parallel to the stratification, burdens and spacings must be reduced and the angle drilling that will conform to the angle of the lamination should be given serious consideration.

Albite (NaA1Si308) is one of the important raw materials for the rapidly developing Turkish ceramic and glass industry. Prior to 1980, development of the ceramic industry in terms of raw material was dependent upon small-scale mining operations; in the last decade, these efforts have increased substantially. The aim of this study is to investigate the geochemical properties and distribution of albite occurrences in the Kocayayla district, which is about 12 km northeast of the town of Milas, about 50 km west of the city of Mugla in southwestern Anatolia. Kocayayla is also well known for its famous ancient city, Labranda. The field area is located in the Menderes Massif, which was formed by major tectonic events during the Late Proterozoic and subsequent periods. The target area was studied to prepare a detailed geological map (scale, 1:10,000), and to determine the formation of albite-mica-schist-quartzite borders in the host rock gneiss. To do this, systematic sampling of albite was done in the two main areas, the Sarikaya and Yumruta? regions. In the study area, albite zones are scattered within an area of about 20 km2, and they extend in a northeast-southwest direction; mica-schists and quartzite veins accompany these units. Mineralogical observations show that quartz is the main mineral associated with albite. In the ceramic industry, the albite + quartz assemblage is well known and is classified as "standard" or "super type," depending upon the content of TiO2 and Fe203. In this study, the Sarikaya albites (profile I) exhibit remarkably lower TiO2 (0.15% on the average) values contrasted to that of Yumruta? (profile 11; 0.24% on the average), whereas Fe203 values vary slightly from 0.076% to 0.085% in both regions.

Over 2 million tonnes of smelter slags containing Co, Ni and Cu are produced and stockpiled in Canada each year. Smelters also produce SO2 an air pollutant. Recycling these materials will maximize the value of natural resources and minimize possible environmental impacts of industrial operations. The objectives of this research were to understand the characteristics of slag, the reaction of slag with SO2(aq) and to develop a novel method for extracting Co, Ni and Cu from slag using SO2. The properties of slags from different smelters were studied, with emphases on the form of Co, Ni, Cu and Fe. Leaching experiments were carried out in a batch reactor. The parameters investigated included concentration of SO2(aq), stirring speed, particle size, temperature and pH. O2 was introduced into the reactor to study its effect on the system. The amount of each of Co, Ni and Cu in all the slags was less than 1%, while Fe was between 30% and 45%. The form of Co and Fe was primarily oxide, however, significant portions of Ni and Cu were present as sulphides. SO2(aq) alone, was effective in leaching Co and Fe. Cu dissolution was negligible due to precipitation. The presence of O2 improved Cu and Ni extraction. SO2(aq) was found to be more effective in leaching slag than H2SO4 at the same pH. The leaching process was modelled using the shrinking core model. A scheme was proposed for the extraction of Co, Ni and Cu from slag using SO2(aq). The process makes efficient use of SO2, separates Co and Cu at an early stage, and minimizes the consumption of base during Fe separation.

Approximately 10 to 20 pct of exhaust aerosol mass from diesel equipped vehicles operating without exhaust controls is attributable to particles in the 1.0-10 µm size range. Recent in-mine measurements suggest that, in addition to reducing overall exhaust aerosol mass concentrations, the use of waterbath exhaust conditioners (water scrubbers) may significantly reduce the concentration of diesel exhaust particles larger than approximately 0.5 µm aerodynamic diameter. This implies that a measurement system that discriminates between diesel and mineral dust aerosols on the basis of aerosol size would have different accuracies depending on use of a water scrubber. To test this hypothesis, laboratory measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine diesel exhaust aerosol penetration efficiency through a water scrubber as a function of size and engine operating conditions. Size distributions were determined using a Micro-Orifice, Uniform Deposit Impactor. Concentrations of CO, CO2, NO x, O2 and gas-phase hydrocarbon concentrations were also measured. No significant effect was found for these gases other than a slight decrease in NOx emissions. The water scrubber served as a moderate aerosol control with reductions in mass concentrations of about 29±9 pct under most conditions. This reduction occurred for particles less than 0.2 µm and greater than 0.6 µm aerodynamic diameter. Coal dust aerosols are mostly larger than 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter. With use of a water scrubber, separating the aerosol into two parts, greater and less than about 0.8 µm aerodynamic diameter during sampling, results in collection of diesel and coal dust aerosol accurate to within 10 pct. Without a water scrubber in operation, such a sampling protocol would only be accurate to approximately 15 pct.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. In July, 1988, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines recommended that the Secretary of Labor set in motion a mechanism whereby a diesel particulate standard can be set. Prerequisite to establishing a standard would be the development and evaluation of instrumentation to measure diesel particulate. In response, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Dust Division, has been evaluating instrumentation that can be used to determine diesel particulate levels in underground mines. This instrumentation employs the principle of impaction to separate particles by size, thereby, separating the diesel and nondiesel particulate. Separation of the particulate by size was chosen because diesel particulate is generally less than 1.0 micrometer in size. No other methods have been developed to successfully distinguish between the coal and diesel particulate. MSHA developed an impactor that is inexpensive and compatible with existing pumps and filter holders. The instrumentation evaluation has primarily focused on the repeatability and performance of several personal dust samplers. The samplers tested include the Sierra-Andersen Model 298 personal impactor and MSHA developed personal impactor. The MSHA impactor is inexpensive and compatible with the existing pumps and filter holders. In addition to evaluating the precision and performance of these instruments, tests have been conducted to determine background levels of submicron particulate in nondieselized coal mines and to measure the submicron particulate content in dieselized coal mines. Tests were conducted in coal mines where diesel equipment was used only in outby areas and also in coal mines where diesel equipment was used for face haulage. This paper describes the results of the tests and provides a description of the instrument at ion used to conduct the tests.

It is often alleged by mine ventilation engineers that no reliable method exists to forecast the levels of radiation to be encountered in future uranium mines. It results that the design of uranium mine ventilation systems is based on factors other than radiological hazards, such as radon and radon daughter concentrations, for which permissible limits are set. Ventilation has been used to date as the main control mechanism for radon and radon daughters. Although it has become increasingly difficult to provide enough ventilating air to reduce the radon gas and its daughter products to safe levels in some mining arrangements, it is not the object of this paper to discuss alternatives to ventilation. This paper will describe a methodology followed by the authors over the years to estimate the levels of radiation to be encountered in underground and open pit uranium mines. Ventilating air is used to maintain working level concentrations within safe limits. The sources of radon and radon daughters and the quantities of each which will be produced, will be of great value in planning and designing a ventilation system to control them. This information can afterwards be integrated into the overall mine design. The methodology to be outlined can also be used to estimate, given a mine design format, the radiation levels to be encountered. If levels are not acceptable, modifications in the mine design can be made at an early stage. The emphasis is placed on an integrated effort where the ventilation engineers and the mine design engineers work in close collaboration from the very start of the mining project. Estimation of radon and radon daughter levels can be initiated as soon as core samples are obtained from the exploration programmes.

The major parameters affecting dust flow at a longwall face are dust generation rate, air velocity and quantity distribution at the face, and the characteristics of the dust such as particle size distribution, density etc. Previous studies have identified the longwall shearer as the major source of the airborne dust in the faces. In this study, the effects of dust generation rate and shearer speed on the levels of ambient dust concentration are investigated. A series of experiments were performed under controlled conditions in a full scale simulated longwall face at the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of U.S. Bureau of Mines using characterized bituminous coal dust. A trickle-duster was moved up and down the longwall face to simulate the shearer. In each experiment, a known amount of dust was dispersed by the trickle-duster into the air and the average dust generation rate was calculated. At the same time, gravimetric respirable and total airborne dust samples were collected and air velocity measurements were made along the face. The experimental conditions, data, and results are presented and discussed in this paper. The airborne dust concentration and air velocity data indicate that the concentration increases and air velocity decreases with distance from headgate for the first half of the face. Towards the tailgate, the air velocity increases with increasing distance but the dust concentration levels off with some variations. The data show that a higher dust generation rate results in higher dust concentration levels. More importantly, the data show that the rate of increase of airborne dust concentration is higher than that of dust generation rate. For the same air velocity distribution and dust generation rate, lower speed of the dust source results in higher airborne dust levels at the face.

"1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, many cities around the world have constructed metro tunnels to alleviate transportation pressure from rapid urbanization. In soft soil areas, metro tunnels are usually constructed by shield-tunneling method due to its high efficiency and little disturbance to environment. However, the tunnels may show significant post-construction settlement after several years of operation. Take Shanghai Metro line 2 for example, the maximum longitudinal settlement reached 160mm after ten years of operation, shown in Figure 1. When analyzing varying factors that contribute to the long-term settlement of tunnels, the effect of cyclic loading from train vibration is rarely taken into consideration for most researches only focus on the influence of leakage problems in the tunnel while neglecting train vibration induced leakage and resulting settlement. It’s true that metro tunnels from shield-tunneling method are prone to have leakage problems due to the special structural configuration. Furthermore, trains move hundreds of times inside the tunnel every day, which inevitably will cause accumulation and dissipation of excess pore pressure. When the excess pore pressure dissipates, tunnel settlement induced by train vibration occurs(Deng F H, 2007). Although researchers (Zheng et al., 2005; Wongsaroj et al., 2007; Mair, 2008; Shin et al., 2012; Zhang et al., 2012, 2015) conducted extensive numerical analysis on the relationship between tunnel settlement and relative permeability of tunnel to surrounding soil by treating tunnels as permeable media, their attention was only paid to the tunnel settlement from reduction of hydrostatic pressure in the ground, rather than from the dissipation of excess pore pressure generated by train vibration. Therefore, the influence of train vibration on the long-term settlements of metro tunnels is still not clear."

Istanbul is the bigest metropolitan city of Turkey with more than 15 millions of population and construction activities are steadly increasing with respect to that increase in population. In this papaer petrographical, physico-mechanical properties of natural aggregate mines from west, (Tekirdag) to East, Izmit (Gebze) 'will be summarized in connection with the concrete production. However the locations suitable for aggregate production in these area as; Paleozoic aged sandstones (Ayazaga, Cendere, Mahmutbey areas), Permb-Carboniferous aged limestones (Cebeciköy area), Triassic limes tones (Ömerli-Gebze areas) and Eosen limestones (Çatalca area), Plio-Quaternary aged volcanic basalts (Tekirdag, Çorlu, Beykoz areas). Plio-quaternary aged, fine grained aggregates within sandy formations are mined in Silivri-Sinekli area, Catalca-Ormanali area, Agacli-Akpinar (Kemerburgaz area) and Sile-Karakiraz-Sahilköy areas. Sandstones mineralogically contain mainly of Quartz+Feldspar and less amount of Mica (biotite+muscovite) rich with slica content and sedimentary origined. Especially limestones are cryptocrystaline textured, unique mineral composed of calcite and secondary have Dolomite ± (Quartz+Albite). Basalts are microlitic textured and contain Olivine+Pyroxene+Plagioclase. Chemically basalts rich with Fe and Mg and also volcanic origined. Sands are fine grained natural aggregates mainly contain semiangled, rounded minerals and rock fragments. Mineralogically have Quartz + Feldspar ± pyroxene+ ambhibole ±garnet and less amount of epidote ± magnetite ± hematite. Different rocks, used in aggregates such as limestones, sandstones-sands and basalts, supply varied concrete strength because of their mineralogical composition and characteristics of textures. Moreover, Basalts (Karatepe area) are good example for the higgest concrete strength (1017-1895 sc; kg/cm2) in our study area because of their clambed mineralogical apperance such as intersertal texture. As the result of extensive field and comparative laboratuary studies, the effect of petrographic, physical, mechanical properties of the aggregates on concrete srtength is extensivelly discussed in this paper.

[The site] [Z]irovski vrh uranium ore deposit is located in the extreme north-western part of Yugoslavia, some fourthy kilometers from the capital of Socialist Republic of Slovenia, Ljubljana, not far from the Italian and Austrian border. The sandstone type deposit of uranium ore with medium grade is located in a foothill of Julian Alps. The site shows some typical conditions for this region, which demand special attention in respect to the incorporation of an uranium treatment facility into environment. Among these specific conditions the following site characteristics should be mentioned: - populated area of agricultural and recreational value, - unconvenient climatic conditions with excessive rainfall and long lasting temperature inversions in the winter time, - very pure surface and underground waters which supply the drinking water reservate for large area including the capital of Slovenia, - sharp relief, - unconvenient geological structure. The choise of technology The intention to produce uranium and at the same time respecting the natural characteristics and existing uses of the site made the design of the ore treatment facility relatively difficult one. In general, there were two basic alternatives available perform the task. First alternative was to adopt the usual technological flowsheet with wet tailings disposal and with discharge of used water i.e. liquid effluents into the river. In order to prevent the negative impact of such technology on the sourrounding area sophisticated water purification installation and costly measures in wet tailings disposal e.g. impermeabilisation of large areas by concrete injections, large dam constructions, uncertain capturing of the water sources should be employed. Second alternative was to modify the usual flowsheet by employing the maximal recycling of liquid effluents to the process and to dispose the solid

Methane ignitions continue to be a major concern to the longwall mining industry. In spite of numerous advances in technology over the past decade, there has not been a measurable reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions. These ignitions will continue to be a problem as deeper and gassier seams are mined, as production rates are increased through numerous improvements in longwall mining equipment, and as the output of the workforce increases due to improved management-labor relations. It is necessary to know methane liberations, emissions, and flow patterns in order to effectively deal with it and to design control technology to reduce the occurrence of longwall face ignitions. A cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) has been established to address longwall methane problems. The initial direction of this work was to look at methane flow patterns during the entire longwall mining process, and more specifically to examine and compare methane levels and flow patterns for advance and retreat methods of longwall mining. Both advance and retreat longwall mining is practiced in the Sydney coal fields in Nova Scotia. In 1986, a study was performed on advancing longwall panels at the Lingan Colliery, and a similar study was recently completed at the Phalen Colliery on a retreating panel. Methane monitors were placed at various locations along the face, intake, return, and bleeder airways. Handheld methane monitors were also used upstream and downstream of the shearer mining machine. This setup allowed a determination of methane sources on the longwall panels, including: liberation from cutting with the shearer mining machine, emissions from the coal seam along the face, emissions from the gob area, and methane already in the intake air. The results from both studies are reported and the differences between the two longwall mining methods compared.

In this study, the formation of zeolites around Kizkapan and Karlikoy villages (Sothwest Kesan) were investigated. In this region, stratigrafically, Upper Eocene Kesan Formation, i.e. sandstone and rarely shale are observed at the bottom. Early Middle-Oligocene Yenimuhacir Formation is composed of sandstone, marl and tuffs. The zeolitisation is determined in the dasitic tuffs of the Yenimuhacir Formation. In this tuffs' zone, alteration had primarily resulted in zeolites, mainly mordenite, heulandite-clinoptiIolite. Silicification and alteration to clay minerals are also common. The Miocene-Pliocene Ergene Formation and alluvium deposits are the top units in the area. In the studied area, zeolite occurences have economic importance. The results show that successively rapid and short term periods are responsible for the clinoptilolite-heuylandite formations. The homogene chemistry of the solutions may be evaluated for a possible successive zeolitisation period. Multi-periodic vocanic activity and also circulation of thermal water had resulted in a continous dissolution of volcanic glass; moreover, resulted in the formation of suitable conditions of zeolite formation. The mineral crystallization sequences and alteration products as zeolites within the wall-rock, circulated solution reaction depends on a serie of parameters such as chemical composition of both initial materials and volcanic solutions during rock¬solution interaction period. The previous researches and the chemical studies support our results and observations in the studied area. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of zeolitisation and to explain the formation steps of zeolitisation in Kesan Area by considering the content and distribution of major and minor elements determined in zeolite bearing tuffs. The chemical structures of both zeolite bearing volcanics and zeolite minerals are compared to the results of previous studies. Two dimentional behaviours of major and minor elements were discussed in order to caracterize zeolitisation development and to postulate a probable formation type of zeolitic alteration.

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo.
