INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. Traditional pit optimization techniques cannot take account of the requirement to blend ore in order to produce a saleable product, as is the case for iron ore, coal, limestone and other industrial minerals. Various techniques are proposed to overcome the deficiencies, many of which have been tested. The techniques in general involve the combined application of pit optimization and blend optimization techniques.

The discussion of water and pit mining together is most appropriate. In fact, water can be considered a mineral and a well a narrow pit. Thus, of all the mineral resources mined, water is probably the cheapest, most valuable and least valued. The delivered price, including mining, transportation, storage and marketing rarely exceeds ten cents per ton, and our economy would cease without it. The time has come when the public must recognize that the extraction of a mineral resource from the land is a necessary and inevitable result of the industries? attempt to meet the demands of a growing economy. In so much of Florida, the lands mined can, with forethought and planning, be left as improved real estate, water conservation and management lands. On the other hand, the mining industries must face up to the need for the reclamation of land and compact with themselves, appropriate governmental agencies and with the mining states to restore mined lands to usefulness. Of limestone, sand, and clay 90 to 100 percent of the mined material is used, but with planning and specing, these pits, if they penetrate the water table, become valuable as real property. Phosphate, which returns about 70 percent of the mined materials to the pit, can reclaim the land for many purposes.

In order to plan the most efficient mine installation, a company should take advantage of all available information and tools. One of the first factors of a coal reserve that needs to be determined as accurately as possible is the quality of coal the mine will have access to during the life of the installation. With the aid of many types of well logs and computor analysis, we are investigating several methods of log correlation to determine such data as moisture, ash, sulphur, and BTU on an in place basis. It may be possible to determine this data more accurately in this manner than by using diamond drill cores for analysis and thus allow for a more profitable mine installation. The production of an underground mine is based on many factors, two of these being roof control and line water, where present either in the roof or coal seam. Using many of the same logs obtained from reserve and active mine areas, we have attempted to determine roof and floor characteristics such as strength, lithology, and moisture properties. Using data obtained from this program, we will make comments on possible length of bolt to be used, possible mining width, and pillar size as they would pertain to these reserves and active mine areas.

A thermal plasma-assisted laminar flow reactor was used to evaluate the kinetics of converting alumina to sodium aluminate in flight. Free energy minimization calculations were used to determine experimental conditions. The experimental variables included alumina particle size, alumina/sodium nitrate molar ratio, temperature and residence time. A mathematical model for the conversion was developed and validated. Experimental and mathematical results are presented.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted field investigations on six different types of bleeder systems used to ventilate areas mined by room and pillar methods. This paper discusses investigations that were conducted at mines using four of these systems.

Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

The Vesta Preparation Plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 NT/hr of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables. handle the -1/4" fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -coal goes to boot classifiers where the +48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4 x 48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal driers for dewatering. As designed, the minus 48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and dewatered by filtration. The-products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-drier circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. This Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at J&L's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke.

The requirements for water inflow control for the Chicago Intercepting Sewer System are stringent. This posed special problems in grouting the bored and conventionally mined tunnels, shafts and chambers of the system. In adapting conventional grouting techniques to the specific problems encountered in the system's pilot project, numerous field procedures were developed. Careful preand post-grout testing and evaluation identified the most efficient and economical of these procedures. As an example of some of the conclusions reached during the project it was found that the mineralized groundwater in the Chicago area tended to reduce the efficiency of the grout holes, thus limiting their useful life. Pressure washing to remove natural fillings was a critical factor in achieving a permanent grout seal. The value of relatively thin lubricating grout mixes was definitely established. Although not an ideal situation, satisfactory results could be obtained by manifold grouting several grout holes simultaneously if done within specific limits of hole groutability, location and numbers. Caulking proved to be a primary controlling factor in achieving acceptable results. To achieve such a high degree of water inflow control requires close supervision by experienced personnel. "Temporary grouting as a construction expedient" produces seepage conditions which are extremely difficult to treat.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) operates a 700,000 tonne per annum open cut gold mine in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi. The operation commenced production in the second quaiter of 1996 and is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year for the mine life. The deposit is predominately refractory in nature and requires a complex treatment route incorporating dry milling and whole ore roasting followed by conventional cyanidation and adsorp­tion of the gold onto activated carbon. Gold is eluted from the carbon to produce <lore bars assaying approximately 94 percent gold. A scrubbing system for the removal of mercury from the roaster off gases was commissioned in late 1997. Due to the location of the operation, close to the coast and in seismic region with high rainfall submarine tailings placement (STP) was the preferred method of tailings disposal. Prior to dis­posal into the ocean the tailings from the CIP plant are detoxified in a three stage detoxification circuit to treat cyanide, arsenic and mercury. This paper reviews some of the design and operational fea­tures of the whole ore treatment process employed at the Minahasa Gold Mine.
