Selective in-plant breakage was investigated at a Central Queensland, Australia mine. Component seams and size fractions from in-plant samples were characterized petrographically and probability analysis of vitrinite reflectance data used to track the distribution of seam proportions through the plant. Results show that the 2 seams reported differentially to coarse and fine circuits, mainly as a function of coal type rather than rank. Seams were also preferentially concentrated in different size fractions of the coarse circuit. Breakage in the coarse coal centrifuge generated approximately 4% of -0.5 mm fines, but was not seam specific.

Alkaline pressure oxidation (POX) is an oxidative pre-treatment option that is commercially used for high-carbonate sulfidic gold ores. The high carbonate grades within the feed ore shifts the ideal operating pH to a basic regime. Compared with acidic POX, alkaline POX typically requires additional steam input due to a lower sulfur oxidation load and a high rate of in-situ carbon dioxide generation that needs to be vented along with steam. The cost of this steam addition is the largest differentiator between acid POX operation and alkaline POX from a cost comparison. However, alkaline POX can offset these costs through reduced acid usage for pre-acidulation and decreased alkali reagent consumption for subsequent neutralization. This paper reviews the specific operating cost impacts of acid/base consumption between alkaline and acidic POX with ores which require pre-acidulation, the overall economics of alkaline POX, and the regimes in which alkaline POX is economically favorable. The findings aim to guide industry professionals in making informed decisions for alkaline POX adoption by providing a summary view of its operational benefits and costs, contributing to the development of cost-effective and sustainable gold ore processing techniques.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents the result of research on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where and how much energy is being used. This developed system represents a framework for efficient management of energy consumption.

Application of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is one of the main solutions to achieve a safe and high-performance method of construction in hard rock and soft ground tunneling. In order to adequately assess the progress and potential impacts of the tunneling operations with the TBM, it is required to record a series of data during the tunneling and process of the data to evaluate the TBM performance. Applying the right machine parameters during the excavation not only delivers an optimum penetration rate, but also prevents extra downtime due to over excavation or wear of cutting tools. In this paper, the effect of machine and operational parameters on TBM downtimes has been studied and supported with the real examples of TBM operation data.

This paper addresses the challenges in optimizing the phosphate flotation process, specifically focusing on the variability in P2O5 recovery. An artificial intelligence (AI) driven Flotation Prediction Model was developed to accurately forecast P2O5 grades. Leveraging real-time data from various operational sources, the model provides insights into how operators can opstimize key flotation parameters to enhance product quality and recovery rates. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of AI predictive modeling in addressing operational variability, marking a crucial step toward intelligent operations in the phosphate flotation process.

Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.

The destabilizing effect of water pressure on rock mass stability is examined quantitatively by the finite element method. A coupled code that accounts for the simultaneous effects of rock mass deformation and transient fluid flow is used for this purpose. The traditional soil mechanics assumption of an incompressible fluid is shown to be untenable for the analysis of porous, fractured rock slopes. A Mandel-Cryer effect, a transitory but elevated and potentially destabilizing water pressure following a cut, was not observed.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, concentration, hypochlorite consumption, and bed height on the total gold extraction. At high pH, the hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption is decreased. At room temperature, the total gold extraction is proportional to the hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10 and 80 percent are obtained for 12 and 167 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption gold extraction was increased by shortening the ore column height. Finally, calcium hypochlorite is more effective than sodium hypochlorite.

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Ground control analysis and groundwater inflow assessments for underground coal mines require in-depth field investigations including, but not limited to, geological and geotechnical core logging, downhole geophysical logging, laboratory rock strength testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. Field and laboratory data collection are time consuming and expensive, and an initial understanding of the expected trends among various geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters can assist with the planning and optimization of geotechnical characterization studies and grouting plans. In this study, a comprehensive database is analyzed, comprised of important rock mass characteristics (hydraulic conductivity, rock quality designation (RQD), and lithology) for coal-bearing rocks in the Central Appalachian Basin. Statistical analysis of the data is completed to establish an enhanced understanding of geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions expected to be encountered as underground coal mining passes near and beneath streams and rivers. The results of the study provide valuable reference material for the coal mining industry for completion of shaft installations, mine stream crossings, environmental assessments, and grouting and mine dewatering designs.

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.

In 1936 a young Dutch geologist discovered an exposed ore mountain in the remote, mountainous province of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This was the beginning of one of the most overwhelming challenges ever faced in obtaining mineral resources from the earth. The challenge was to traverse mangrove swamps and reach deep into the almost impenetrable jungles of the Jayawijaya Mountains which have an elevation of 4900 meters (16,000 ft.). The target was an almost inaccessible mountain of copper ore.

Paper and paperboard manufacturers need to quantify the carbon footprint and environmental impact of their products to satisfy market, social and government demands. Coated paper products contain minerals, such as kaolin and calcium carbonate, at significant levels; some coated paper grades have mineral contents as high as 45% by weight. Some uncoated paper has no mineral content, but most uncoated paper contains some mineral to improve appearance, process efficiency and cost. Super-calendared paper grades can contain levels of mineral up to 35% by weight. This paper describes how to calculate the carbon footprint of kaolin and calcium carbonate minerals used for white pigments. The carbon footprint of these minerals strongly correlates to the primary energy sources, final product form and energy used to calcine kaolin and lime. Kaolin and calcium carbonate pigments have a favorable impact on the carbon footprint of paper and paperboard products by directly substituting for fiber and by reducing the energy needed for paper making. Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC) conducted pilot scale testing and computer simulation studies which indicates that the capacity of the secondary grinding mill could be increased and that concentrate grade improvement could be expected with improved classification in the grinding circuit. Based on these studies, a decision was made to modify one secondary ball mill line at NSPC to include both cyclone and screen classification with magnetic separation applied to the circulating load. This paper will briefly discuss the studies leading to the decision to modify the circuit, the design of the modified circuit and the initial start-up and operating experience.

Many papers 'have been publihed on the role of the bacterium.Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and years of research have established the following environmental factors, which influence biological oxidation. 1. Oxygen is required for the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds to the sulfate form. Sufficient oxygen. is available from the air, consequently, it is of importance to get the air to the bacteria. 2. The bacteria are active in the pH range 1.4 3.5. Maximum activity occurs at pH 2..0 - 2.8. 3. -In order to allow the bacterial populations to expand, certain essential nutrients must be available. Nitrogen has to be supplied for the production of body protein, and ammonia is the source most readily accepted by the bacteria. Carbon dioxide is the only utilizable source of carbon and the small amounts available in air are the primary source of this element. Small amounts of phosphate, manganese,, potassium,. calcium. and magnesium are also required. These trace minerals are available from the water and host rock in sufficient quantities. 4. Water is required as a carrier for the oxygen carbon dioxide and other nutrients, as-well as a solvent for the metallic sulfates produced. The bacteria are motile and the water allows the bacterial populations to spread:: bacterial activity ceases if the equilibrium relative humidity drops below 100%. 5.-optimum bacterial activity occurs at temperatures of 34 - 35°.C (93 -.95° F). All activity ceases above 45° C. At lower temperatures, activity its dramatically decreased, but there is still a significant amount at 10 - 11° C.- Thiobacillus ferruoxidans has been isolated from a mine with a year round temperature of 3° C. 6. Unpublished results from our laboratory show that biological leach ore oxidation takes place during the rest periods at the same rate as during the wet leaching periods providing there is a film of moisture remaining around the particles. Optimum conditions can be readily achieved in the laboratory, but application of our laboratory knowledge to commercial leaching dumps is riot as simple. Attempts to achieve improved environmental conditions for the bacteria in leaching dumps would require substantial capital investment and careful planning of leaching operations. This paper

"From November 2014 through September 2016, Westmoreland’s Coal Valley Mine utilized a Marion 7450 electric walking dragline to extract 1.2 million tonnes of a vertically-dipping, 52-meter wide, fault-thickened seam, beneath a conventionally-excavated pit bottom. Mine planning and operational hurdles encountered throughout a kilometer of mined strike length included mitigating highwall instability in both hanging and footwall slopes, water management, and end-of-life machine reliability and maintenance. The most substantial challenge has been the depressed global coal market. However, the successful application of this mining method significantly aided the overall cost of production at the site. The valuable experience gained from this project will be extended to future mining areas where this technique can be similarly applied. INTRODUCTION Coal Valley Mine is located approximately 220 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Since commercial production began in 1978, more than 84 million clean tonnes of coal has been produced and sold domestically as well as exported overseas for power generation. While the existing processing plant has a nameplate capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, the site has operated at a 2 million tonne rate since 2015 due to depressed export markets. Westmoreland acquired the mine as part of its purchase of Sherritt Coal Operations in April 2014. The mine operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an IUOE workforce of 261. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The geology of the Yellowhead Tower mining area differs significantly from previous mining areas at Coal Valley. The Mynheer coal seam discussed herein consists of steeply dipping, highly-sheared, thrust-faulted, and heterogeneous coal pods. Deep set, southwest striking thrust faults were the likely mechanism for the podding and have resulted in overturned, rolled and highly sheared seams with zone thicknesses of up to 65 meters.The hanging wall is characterized by soft bentonitic mudstones and siltstones, overlain by massive competent sandstone. The footwall is defined by a hard volcanic tuff, interbedded with thin, sporadic coal seams. The sandstone above and volcanic tuff below constrained the faulting system within this zone, enabling the mass podding that has afforded the opportunity for large-scale mining."

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.

The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar» filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product. Lab and pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70\ -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20\ are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press. Currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 Series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50\ to achieve these results.
