The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

The Moon, asteroids, and planets of the solar system represent the most distant caches of wealth that humanity has ever considered recovering. Yet, in addition to the potentially recoverable values represented there, harvesting off-Earth resources has a second, almost incalculable sustainable benefit in that they can be retrieved with absolutely no damage to Earth. Previous research mostly assessed the potential of asteroids and the Moon for mining purposes from a theoretical and scientific point of view. These studies investigated drawbacks that could be experienced in this type of operation, but no detailed economic evaluation that is meaningful for mining project management has been conducted and the parameters that are most likely to make an operation feasible are unknown. This paper provides a preliminary economic and sensitivity analysis of a possible off-Earth mining business extracting minerals from an existing asteroid.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

This work evaluates and characterizes the impact of the support size and mining dilution of a block model in the operation and selection of equipment at an open pit mine. An exploratory analysis and geostatistical modelling of the grades assayed on a set of drill hole samples is performed, which allows constructing a grade model on a dense grid by means of a conditional simulation. The grades are then averaged to greater selective mining unit supports in order to proceed with the study and methodology. First, the metal-tonnage curves are used to analyse the loss of selectivity on the in situ resources caused by a change of support. Concerning the ore reserves and their mining sequence, defined in the pit optimization and analysis process, the same curves prove that the loss of selectivity is more accentuated. Second, the importance of the block boundary dilution produced during mining operations is assessed. Its value depends on the amount of ore in contact with waste, on the loading error of the equipment and on the ore loss/waste dilution criterion assumed by the planner. The dilution percentage and the differences between waste and ore grades become higher when the block size decreases. For these reasons, considering the dilution in the production plans makes mining a small support more constraining. An adequate delimitation of the orebody can improve the mining selectivity, leading to greater income. Finally, a study of the increase in mining cost that provides a zero difference in NPV between the different block size options is carried out, in order to determine the maximum increase in mining costs for which it remains profitable to mine at a smaller block size. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Technikon Practical Training Frank shaft is mining both Merensky reef and UG2 reef. The Merensky orebody is almost depleted and this was the reason for starting to mine the UG2 ore reserves. It was decided to mine the UG2 orebody with trackless equipment using a bord and pillar mining method. Frank shaft has been mining the UG2 orebody for nearly 5 years. The T-cut mining method was introduced to see if it could improve the grade of the run of mine (ROM) as well the extraction percentage.

Some 30 years ago exposure to dense-medium separation in South Africa, culminated in the adaptation of the process for the treatment of -0.5 mm fines. The first commercial plant at Greenside Colliery apparently operated for some 18 years. Three further plants followed, including one treating tin ore. It is gratifying to learn, therefore, that there is renewed interest. The objective of making the process easier to operate (?more practical??) is commendable but the cumbersome technical approach could be counter productive. Perhaps a brief outline of the original thinking might be helpful when analysing the problem.

The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc thesis This paper investigates the effects of thiol collectors: xanthates, dithiophosphates, dithiocarbamates and mixtures of these on the froth flotation performance obtained with a bornite-rich copper sulphide ore from Okiep Copper Mine with a feed grade of 1.8%copper. Batch flotation tests were used to assess the performance in terms of mass-water recovery, sulphur grade-recovery and copper grade-recovery relationships and the Klimpel rate constant for copper recovery. The results showed that the di-ethyl-dithiocar-bamate (di C2-DTC) was the weakest collector of copper sulphide minerals. Highest copper recoveries were obtained with the di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP), which were accompanied with more watery froths and lower copper grades demonstrating frothing properties in addition to collector action. Superior copper recoveries were obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10% di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP) and 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10%di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate (di C2-DTC) collector mixtures compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at an equivalent collector dosage of 0.139 mol/ton ore (a dosage equivalent to 20 g sodium ethyl xanthate per ton ore). A superior copper grade was obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate: 10% di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate collector mixture at a dosage of 0.0695 mol/ton ore compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at the same equivalent dosage. Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.

The corrosion behaviour of a low carbon steel was investigated in natural seawater and various synthetic seawaters. It was found that the steel corroded nearly four times faster in a 3.5% NaCl solution than in natural seawater for an exposure time of 21 days. The corrosion rate after immersion in synthetic seawaters (ASTM D1141 and Marine Biological Laboratory seawater) is similar to the corrosion rate after immersion in natural seawater. Calcium carbonate (aragonite) deposits were found on the surface of the steel after immersion in natural seawater and the synthetic seawaters. Some magnesium-containing deposits were also found after immersion in the natural seawater. These deposits act as a barrier against oxygen diffusion and thereby lower the corrosion rate. The morphology of the calcium carbonate deposits that formed during immersion in the natural seawater is different from those formed during immersion in the synthetic seawaters. This may explain the slightly lower corrosion rates obtained in the natural seawater. X-ray diffraction also showed that the oxy-hydroxides formed in the 3.5% NaCl solution differed from those formed in the other solutions. This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. The paper deals with the results of dynamic tests carried out on a range of surface support liners consisting of combinations of mesh (various types), shotcrete, and wire rope lacing. The testing was carried out over the period 1993 to 1998. The dynamic testing method made use of drop weight impact loading of test samples which attempted to simulate realistic in situ conditions, and the range of loading imposed was equivalent to small to severe rockburst conditions. The results of the testing provide quantitative data, in the form of input energy, which is relevant for support design and for the choice of support types appropriate for situations in which significant mine-induced seismicity occurs or is expected to occur. In addition to the wire mesh and shotcrete liner systems tested, estimates of energy capacity are made for other, untested, systems.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. In diesem kleinen Standort, werden wiederholte Wasserdruck Erhöhungen durch das Schliessen eines Hahnes produziert. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. Die numerische 2D-Modellierung mit dem UDEC Software ist für die Verkeilung der Faktoren gebraucht worden. Des mesures simultanées de déformation normale et de pression dans plusieurs joints ont permis de mieux appréhender le comportement d'un tel massif fracturé. L'article décrit dans un premier temps le site et présente les interprétations conceptuelles des mesures. Pour bien reproduire les mesures, Il est essentiel de prendre en compte certains facteurs tels que la raideur normale variable du joint, le voisinage du joint (par l'intermédiaire d'un coefficient Z), l'état de contrainte initial. L'article précise la méthode originale d'interprétation des mesures pression-déplacements qui montre la bonne adéquation aux lois de comportement non linéaire proposées.
