[THIS bibliography lists publications issued by the Bureau of Mines concerned with investigations on petroleum and natural gas. The items included are chosen for their continuing interest and value. It was recognized early that a list of petroleum and natural gas publications was needed for the Bureau's work, and unofficial publication of a ?straight forward listing? was begun. It was at first a chronological list; however, suggestions submitted by its users prompted a formed change to show publications under broad, general topics. Author and subject indexes were developed, becoming more detailed with each new edition. This present list supersedes the ones compiled in 1949, 1952, and 1957, and several supplements, which were aside available to the public by the Library Of the Bureau?s Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center. The unofficial field publication came to be widely known and in considerable demand by those who are primarily interested in the Bureau's publications on petroleum and natural gas so that it became, desirable to have it published as an Information Circular. It is hoped that this official publication will result in a wider and more effective use of the Bureau's research results which are reported in its publications.]

3.1 Criteria for Selection A coal deposit has the following major characteristics: i) wide distribution as a flat-lying, thin, bedded deposit ii) stable nature of its major components and ranking characteristics such as carbon, heat content, volatile components, specific gravity, etc. iii) number of constituents and characteristics which under present regulations limit usage, such as content of ash, sulphur, sodium, etc. iv) effect of characteristics of over- and under- lying host rocks including porosity and permeability, lithology and general geology v) low value, high bulk nature. Because of the relative stability of its major components and its low unit price, coal does not require the same attention to detail as do the metal deposits. However, new regulations combined with social pressures make it imperative that more accurate information be made available concerning factors which affect the quality of coal and which may have an adverse effect on the environment when the coal is mined or burnt. The method selected for the evaluation of a coal deposit must, therefore, be flexible and sensitive enough to be used to interpolate stable parameters whose general distribution character-

"This report is () expansive test program by the Bureau of Mines to determine methods from various and ferrous manganese-grade product () widespread () and manfniferrous iron ores. Among the samples received for testing was one from the pits of the Barytes Mining Co., 1-1/ 2 miles northeast of Cartersville, Ga.. The property is approximately in the center of the Cartersville manganese district and shares a common corner with properties of the New Riverside Ochre Co. and the Etowah Development Co., both producers of manganifereus ores. The deposit is typical of the district and occurs in residual clays resulting from weathering of the Shady limestone and Weisner quartzite. 7/The property is developed by a number of open pits ranging to 60 feet in depth. In 1918 several carloads of manganiferous iron ore was mined from an alit on the property. Since then mining operations have been negligible. The ore is known locally as calico ore.A 4-ton sample representing -re as it occurs in the -pen pits vas furnished for testing. The sample consisted of a mixture of red iron oxides, wad, and clay, with small pebbles of manganese oxides and siliceous fragments scattered throughout."

This report was limited to a search of available literature on under- ground methods to combat acid water pollution. From this review it is evident that very little work has been done in this specific area. It is also evident that there are specific areas of mining engineering and mining related hydrology and geology that need further research efforts to solve the many water problems. They are: (A) Composition, variation and availability for oxidation of sulfur in strata. (B) Rate of oxidation of sulfuritic materials. (C) In situ limestone and its influence on underground acid drainage. (D) Structural, stratigraphic and hydrologic character of old mining areas as a basis to make decisions about adjacent new mining areas. (E) Operational changes in mining methods to prevent pollution. (F) Sealants for underground coating to exclude water from contact with pyrite to inhibit formation of the contaminants. Such a program has been initiated on refuse piles. The prime purpose of this report is to investigate those practices which have been used to regulate or control water accumulation and prevent harmful mine drainage. A supplemental purpose is to indicate those areas which need further research to prevent underground mine water pollution.

The respirable dust standard in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is designed to prevent disability and death from coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Beginning June 30, 1970, the operators of coal mines were required to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the active workings at or below 3.0 milligrams of dust per cubic meter of air. The standard is reduced to 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter after Dec. 30, 1972. This paper presents the equipment and procedures used by the coal mine operators in implementing the respirable dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare and shows the effect of the law, during the first year, on the reduction of dust levels in selected mines. The system employed by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing and processing the dust samples is also presented.

Mining companies are usually held responsible for accidents occurring to the public around their operations . Safeguards are provided by progressive mining companies to prevent the public from getting into danger from wandering unattended about the properties . At abandoned operations , where little or no supervision can be maintained , persons are often injured through the negligence of the operator in leaving the property in unsafe condition . After a mine is abandoned or a lease is given up by a mining company , the responsibility for the safety of the property rests sometimes with the State to which the property ownership reverts or with the owner of the land ; either is usually quite unwilling to spend any money to remedy unsafe conditions due to the carelessness of the mining company . The land owner or the State , or both , should see that the work of leaving safe conditions behind is done by the operator before he abandons the mine or gives up the lease . Some of the worst hazards to the public at abandoned mines are from old test pits , abandoned shafts or tunnels , open pits , caved ground , and bodies of water in abandoned open pits . Hazards exist from some of these sources during the active operation of a mining property as well . In the early stages of mining operations test shafts are often sunk from 50 to 100 feet deep through the more or less loose material overlying bed rock . When these shafts are left unprotected , they are a serious danger for many years to come . In the course of time they become largely concealed by brush and grass , and thus are a deadfall to anyone who might happen to step into them . This condition will hold true for any part of the country, but to a much less degree where it is not necessary to sink through a great amount of cover . Many progressive operating companies have adopted the practice of filling in test pits after securing the information desired . Some nonresident landowners and exploration companies , however , have left such pits open , and it is extremely difficult for the mine inspector to get into communication with the owner . The application of diamond drills for blast holes is limited to the special Job of extracting floor and stope pillars, and therefore their operation is intermittent. The zinc ore drilled occurs in metamorphosed dolomitic limestone. The mining method is sublevel open-stoping on 200- foot lifts. Ample fresh air is provided by mechanical ventilation. Diamond drilling blast holes began in August 1944. Drills were mount- ed on a 3-inch quarry bar. The contract price for labor for operating equipment owned by the company was $0.23 per foot. The diamond bits were cast-set at the factory in a sintered tungsten matrix. Bit replacement costs were $0.15 to $0.20 per foot drilled. The feet drilled per bit ranged from 87 to 258. The feet drilled per diamond-drill shift ranged from 121 to 129. Holes were loaded with 60-percent special gelatin dyna- mite and fired electrically. In percussion drilling, the estimated feet drilled por machine shift with hand-held sinkers was 65. The tons broken per machine shift averaged 40 throughout the mine. Detachable bits have been adopted recently. The principal advantage of diamond-drilling blast holes at the Balmat mino is the extraction in a safe manner of ore not minable by short-hole drilling. The principal disadvantago is the greater cost per foot of holo in comparison with percussion drilling.

Thin sections of coal have been prepared for many years either by cutting on a microtome (1,2)5 or by grinding and polishing (2,1). Specimens of most coals had to be demineralized in hydrofluoric acid and softened in caustic solutions before they could be successfully cut with a conventional microtome. Some lignites could be cut without pretreatment. Jeffrey (1) obtained sections from coals of all ranks, although long and tedious pretreatment was required for anthracite. His sections were less than 1 cm.2 in area (probably much less for high rank coals) and about 5 microns thick. Thiessen (2) also cut sections of softened coals, mostly of low rank. His sections were a few square millimeters in area and about 3 microns thick. However, Thiessen preferred ground and polished sections for detailed studies because they were larger and had not been chemically attacked by softening media. He prepared ground sections as large as 4 cm.2 in area and usually 5 to 10 microns thick. Thousands of such sections, covering complete column samples of many coal beds, were studied for a number of years (4). With the development of the electron microscope and increased interest in quantitative optical studies of coals, a need for much thinner sections arose. However, no suitable technique for preparing such sections was known until Fernández-Morán developed a diamond knife for cutting ultrathin sections of hard materials (5). Workers at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France applied this new tool to the cutting of coal sections and have recently described their technique to the Burg, of Mines. No experimental heat-of-formation value has been reported in the literature for cerium sesquioxide. The heat of formation of bismuth sesquioxide has not been determined in recent years, and the older value was subject to large uncertainty. Accordingly, the heats of combustion of cerium sesquioxide and bismuth metal were measured by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were: ?H°298.15 = -427.01 ± 0.70 kcal. /mole for cerium sesquioxide and ?H°298.15 = -137.16 ± 0.30 kcal./mole for bismuth sesquioxide. The free energy of formation was estimated for cerium sesquioxide and accurately calculated for bismuth sesquioxide. The data were compared with values in the literature.

Increased activity in the beneficiation of taconite, particularly the magnetic variety, has shown the need for more information on the rate of oxidation of magnetite to hematite. This oxidation occurs in the pelletizing step of the beneficiation process. Magnetic taconite is an intimate association of magnetite and a siliceous gangue. It must be ground to approximately 70 to 30 percent minus 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite from the gangue. With sufficient liberation, magnetic concentration will yield a product high enough in iron and low enough in silica for blast-furnace use. The magnetic concentrate must be agglomerated before it can be used in a blast furnace. Agglomeration is the general term applied to all methods of compacting or consolidating fine iron-oxide materials, sintering and pelletizing being the two most common methods. Sintering is clone on a Dwight-Lloyd or Greenawalt sintering machine. Pelletizing consists of balling fine, moist oxide in a rotating drum, followed by baking at .a temperature below that of incipient fusion to develop a permanent bond within each pellet. The magnetic concentrate from taconite is too fine for good sintering practice but fine enough for good pelletizing practice.

The United States coal mining industry has traditionally experienced difficulty in controlling dust levels below the occupational exposure limit. While improvements in face ventilation and water spray nozzles have decreased dust exposures, approximately eight percent of experienced coal miners are still developing Coal Worker?s Pneumoconiosis. This investigation tested the feasibility of enhancing existing engineering dust controls by mounting a simple barrier on a longwall shearer that separated the operators from the cutting drums. The barrier was constructed and tested above ground at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory longwall gallery test facility. A 96-percent reduction of respirable dust occurred at the headgate sampling position when tested at 2.4 m/sec (480 ft/min). The average dust level decreased from 39 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 by utilizing the barrier.

So many subjects are covered in State mine-safety regulations that any attempt to compare different State laws in their entirety would be futile. On the other hand, if one selects a single phase or branch of safety work, such a comparison may prove profitable. The subject selected for study in this paper is limited to legislation or regulations dealing specifically with safeguarding (electric) motored equipment used in gassy mines. T When one reads glowing accounts of the safety activities being carried on here and there it is easy to believe that everything which is right and proper is being done to safeguard the mine.workers; but, when one takes time to look into the weakness of many State regulations, it is evident that there is still room for improvement. Undoubtedly it would have been much better for the safety of mines if electrical equipment had been introduced into mines 50 years earlier. If electricity had been in general use when the first mine regulations were pre- pared, those formulating the rules would have covered this hazard along with other hazards, but as electricity came in at a later period, safe mine legisla- tion regarding it has been woefully neglected. Today the United States in general is far behind most other coal-producing nations in the provision of adequate safety rules or laws for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and wiring. Returning to the subject of our study, approximately 30 of the 48 States mine coal. More than 20 of these States' produce coal in large quantities. How- ever, of the 30 States only four, 3 Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia, have laws which specially call for the use of explosion-proof types

"IntroductionCoal extraction by continuous miners (CM) is currently the most common underground method in the US industry and accounts for slightly more than two-thirds of the nation· s deep mining production (National Coal Association, 1987). Even if longwall mining should become more commonplace, it can proceed only af1er ventilation and access entries have been driven by CMs. Since an area of concern continues to be the effects of the dust generated on the health of mineworkers, this paper discusses the relationship between the elemental composition of mining-generated airborne dust sampled from the immediate ventilation return of a CM and laboratory-generated dust derived from channel samples taken from the mines.There are several potential contributions of this type of study to the coal mining industry. First after more fundamental knowledge of the causes of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is learned, the laboratory-generated respirable dust could be used to identify a potentially hazardous coal seam. Also, this study could possibly aid in understanding the fundamental causes of CWP by producing mining-simulated samples of coal dust that could be used in epidemiological studies.Further, assuming that there is no difference in the elemental composition of a drill-core sample and a channel sample from the same location a mining company could predict anew mine's respirable dust elemental composition In the immediate ventilation return by using exploratory drill core samples of the roof ,coal, and floor rock to prepare the laboratory dust. Ventilation engineers could then use engineering design and control measures during premine planning to reduce the incidence and severity of CWP by better ventilating the potentially hazardous coal seam. If this proper planning prevented any future changes to the ventilation equipment and mine design, much time and money could be saved.Scope of workTo investigate the variability of the chemical characteristics of respirable dust, airborne dust samples from eight underground coal mines located in the eastern and mid western United States were collected with eight-stage Sierra Model 298 Marple cascade impactors, as well as 25 channel samples of mined material. Each channel sample was removed from the middle of the coal face before mining occurred. Sampling of the mining-generated dust was conducted by Lee ( 1986) by sampling the entire working sections, primarily for characterization purposes, to obtain information on the locational variability of dust characteristics. Research performed for this study used the elemental analyses of the mining-generated dusts he sampled in the immediate ventilation returns of CMs."

One of the chief hazards in mining bituminous coal is the accumulation of coal dust in the mines . When coal dust is thrown into suspension , it can be ignited and exploded by electricity through short -circuiting of mining machinery and trolley wires , or by arcs and sparks . The Bureau of Mines has endeavored to assist the coal -mining industry in preventing disasters from this cause by urging that all bituminous -coal mines be rock -dusted . As it has been difficult to convince some mining men of the danger of ignition of coal dust and of the effectiveness of rock dusting in preventing widespread explosions , a small , portable , coal -dust - explosion gallery has been designed to demonstrate the explosibility of bituminouscoal dust . Such galleries are furnished to Bureau engineers , inspectors , and safety instructors to illustrate visually and impressively the Bureau's accident -prevention educational work on the causes and prevention of dust explosions in bituminous -coal mines .

All State mining laws require that flame safety lamps be used in gassy mines; the laws of some States require that safety lamps be kept for emergencies at every coal mine, whether gassy or nongassy. The use of the flame safety lamp has been widespread because it is the only defice readily available for detecting both the presence of methane and deficiency of oxygen. This paper reports the results of an investigation by the Electrical Section, in cooperation with the Gas Section, of the Pittsburgh Experiment Sta¬tion relative to the behavior of permissible flame safety lamps in mine atmospheres deficient in oxygen and the effects of methane5 on the detection of Oxygen deficiency.

Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. Several short color films describing new technology developed through Bureau of Mines research are available on a loan basis. The films review results of Bureau research programs aimed at aiding the minerals industry by increasing mine productivity, ensuring worker health and safety, and enhancing minerals recovery, processing and recycling. Most of the films are available in a choice of for mats: 16mm film, ½" VHS cassette tape, or ¾" U-matic tape. The films are loaned by the Bureau of Mines free of charge; borrowers are requested to pay only the return postage and for any damage to the films. All titles are also available for purchase in 16mm or videotape formats. Interested persons wishing to borrow or purchase a film should specify its title and the preferred and alternate showing dates. This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tin, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal.

"Coal washing commands the thoughtful attention of a steadily incre in number of people. Clean coal is not merely a luxury but is rapidly becoming a necessity in some industrial operations.Coal seams in the Northeast are rarely free from ""bone"" and shale or clay partings which vary from a fraction of an inch to several feet in thickness. Nearly all of the coal measures are folded and faulted, the coal seams dip at various angles, and in some cases are badly broken. In mining these seams fragments of the roof and floor, as well as partings of impur-ities within the seams, unavoidably become mixed with the coal, so that the raw coal as it comes to the surface often contains as much as 50 per cent, by weight of waste.At the Bureau of Mines experiment station at Seattle, the washing of this coal in order to improve it for commercial use has been studied. Since the process of coal-washing depends upon differences in specific gravity between the clean coal and, its associated impurities, the first problem undertaken was that of determining the specific gravity of the clean coal and of each parting of impurity contained in a large number of representative seams.It was found that the freshly-mined coal is practically saturated with water, this being observed in determining the effect of moisture content upon the specific gravity of the coal particles, selected from samples of coal varying from low-grade subbituminous up to semianthracite, all of which are found in the State of Washington. The specific gravity values determined for the cleanest particles varied from 1.28 to 1.35; in general, the higher the rank of the coal the hither the specific gravity."
