The mine and mill of the Davis-Dunkirk Lines, Inc., are about 16 miles by road south of Prescott, Ariz., which is the nearest railroad point for receiving mine and mill supplies and for shipping concentrates to smelters. A good trucking road reaches within 2 miles off the property, but from that point the grade is very steep. Outgoing loads are limited to 2 tons. The topography near the mine is exceedingly rugged, and the area is slightly wooded. The climate is mild excepting in a few winter months, when the snowfall is heavy. Electric power is secured by way of a 4 1/2-mile, high-tension line connecting with the main line of the Arizona Power Co. The concentrator was intended to treat 60 tons or more daily of gold-silver-copper ore and make a single gold-silver-copper concentrate for shipment to a copper smelter.

Solid and liquid impurities must be removed almost completely from synthesis gas for the production of synthetic liquid fuels because of their effect on the synthesis catalyst and turbocompressors. The maximum permissible concentration of dust has been set at 0.05 grain per 100 cubic feet.5/ This is one part per million by weight, or about the same concentration as in average city air. The cost of synthesis gas is estimated to constitute 60 to 70 percent of the total cost of the synthetic liquid fuel. For this reason this station is developing processes using coal instead of the more valuable coke as raw material, which promises reduction in cost of the synthesis gas. This, however, increases the difficulty of attaining the above dust value. As failure of the dust-removing equipment to produce high-purity gas may ruin valuable equipment within a few minutes, it is imperative that a reliable and continuous method be obtained for determining such extremely low concentrations .of dust in the purified gas. A suitable device must also instantly sound an alarm and, if necessary, automatically actuate the proper valves to prevent damage. The Ess Instrument Co. designed and built an instrument which they believed might fulfill these specifications. It' continually compared, by means of photoelectric cells, the intensity of a light beam passing through the gas and a similar beam passing through clean air. For maximum sensitivity, the photocells were connected back to back, i.e., anode to cathode and cathode to anode. The difference in voltage produced by the two cells was amplified and operated an indicator.

[The supply of gravel spar and of acid spar is not well balanced. Gravel spar -- 85 per cent flourspar, 5 per cent silica -- gluts the market, whereas acid spar -- 98 per cent fluorspar, 1 per cent silica -- is somewhat scarce. Hence it is desirable to convert some of the gravel spar into acid spar. Knowledge of this condition prompted the Franklin. Fluorsrar Co. at Paducah. Ky., to enter into cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy to improve the methods of fluorspar, milling so that morn acid spar would be available. The fluorspar company detailed Mr. Omar Greeman for the work. During the course of the investigation, while Mr. Greeman was also doing work for a master's degree in the School of Mines? an extensive study was made of gravity concentration of fluorspar ores. Decrepitation by heat treatment was also given a laboratory try-out. A part of tie time was spent on flotation; these notes relate only to the flotation. The results of one of the flotation runs is appended. The test was made in a 500-gram mechanical-agitation machine. The sample was ground to 100-mesh in a pebble mill.]

This paper discusses human judgment and decision-making under stress. The authors review selected recent literature across various disciplines and suggest a definition of stress within the context of decision-making during the management of emergencies. They also discuss fieldwork by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, NIOSH, which explores traumatic incident stress, the relationship between previous training and performance under stressful conditions, and human behavior in underground mine fires. The authors assert that stress is one of the factors that decision-makers must contend with in most life-or-death situations. They suggest that a better understanding of individual's judgment and decision-making activities while under stress would yield a better understanding of how people reach the choices they make in emergencies. This enhanced understanding would be of enormous value to emergency managers, researchers, and policymakers.

A safety glass eyepiece which had been repeatedly exposed to mine environment over a number of years was studied to determine some of its optical properties. In the regions from 385 to 400 mµ and from 625 to 760 mµ, the transmittance was less than the 89 percent required by the American Standard Safety Code for Head, Eye, and Respiratory Protection. From 200 to 320 mµ the relative transmittance of two parts of the eyepiece was found to vary widely, having a maximum of 38 percent difference at 315 mµ. Irradiation of the glass by ultraviolet light caused enhanced absorption in the range from 200 to 1,200 mµ. There was a time-dependent increase of 1016 color centers per cubic centimeter throughout this range after 36.5 hours of irradiation. The rate-of-growth curve for the optical density, at 243.5 mµ and 23° C, was resolved into linear and saturable components, indicating zero order and first order

THE VISUAL-ARC spectroscopic method of rapid qualitative analysis of complex inorganic compounds has been popularized in the past few years and is being employed by an increasing number of laboratories. The mineralogy and chemistry departments of several universities recently have added visual spectroscopy to their laboratory curricula. This revival of interest in a somewhat dormant analytical method has been stimulated through the publication of three papers 4 by members of the College Park staff of the Bureau of Mines. These virtually are the only recent sources of information on visual-arc spectroscopic analysis. They include data on the spectroscopic assembly, the analytical procedure, and the practical application of the method to determinative mineralogy and related fields. Requests for reprints of these papers continue to be received; at present only a limited number of copies are available for distribution. In order that these requests may be adequately answered, material from the three papers has been combined and, with some additional data, is presented in this bulletin. Numerous specific inquiries have been received regarding types of equipment available, problems in instrumentation, and information on the approximate sensitivity limits of the elements that can be detected by this method. Some of this material was not included in the original papers. Accordingly, the table of wavelengths has been revised to include the approximate visual-arc spectroscopic sensitivities, and a section on commercially available equipment has been added.

The Bureau of Mines conducted phosphate beneficiation studies to determine the influence of mineralogical and textural features on the recovery of phosphate from select bed and composite samples representing different phosphate rock types of the western Phosphoria Formation. Batch heavy-liquid tests showed that ore grade) pellet size, and type of interstitial material were significant parameters affecting concentrate grade and recovery. Recoveries at acid grade (31.5 percent P2O5) ranged from 98 to 56 percent. Liberation was essentially complete at 28 mesh, and recoveries tended to drop when overgrinding occurred.

In an effort to reduce Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) in the mining industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop noise controls for mining equipment whose operators exceed the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL). The process involves three steps: 1) Noise source identification (NSI), 2) development of noise controls, and 3) evaluation of the developed noise controls. For the first and third steps, microphone phased array measurements are typically conducted and data are processed using the conventional beamforming (CB) algorithm. However, due to the size and complexity of the machines, this task is not straight forward. Furthermore, because of the low frequency range of interest, i.e., 200 Hz to 1000 Hz, results obtained using CB may show poor resolution issues which result in inaccuracy in the noise source location. To overcome this resolution issue, two alternative approaches are explored in this paper, namely the CLEAN-SC algorithm and a variarion of an adaptive beamforming algorithm known as Robust Capon Beamformer (RCB). These algorithms were used along with the CB algorithm to process data collected from a horizontal Vibrating Screen (VS) machine used in coal preparation plants. Results with the array in the overhead position showed that despite the use of a large array, i.e., 3.5-meter diameter, the acoustic maps obtained using CB showed "hot spots" that covered various components, i.e., the screen deck, the side walls, the I-beam, the eccentric mechanisms, and the electric motor. Thus, it was not possible to identify which component was the dominant contributor to the sound radiated by the machine. The acoustic maps obtained using the RCB algorithm showed smaller "hot" spots that in general covered only one or two components. Nevertheless, the most dramatic reduction in "hot" spot size was obtained using the CLEAN-SC algorithm. This algorithm yielded acoustic maps with small and well localized "hot" spots that pinpointed dominant noise sources. However, because the CLEAN-SC algorithm yields small and localized "hot" spots, extra care needs to be used when aligning the acoustic maps with the actual pictures of the machine. In conclusion, use of the RCB and the CLEAN-SC algorithms in the low frequency range of interest helped pinpoint dominant noise sources which otherwise would be very hard to identify.

Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

The Spring Canyon Mine Rescue Association is a cooperative association supported jointly by five coal-mining companies located in Spring Canyon, Utah. The properties of mining companies the Carbon Fuel Co, Rains , Utah, the Liberty Coal Co. , Latuda, Utah, the Standard Coal Co. , Standardville , Utan, the Spring Canyon Coal Co. , Storrs , Utah, and the Peerless Coal Co. , Peerless , Utah about a mile apart and normally employ a total of 915 men , 733 underground 182 on the surface . and The Association was organized on July 5, 1921 , and Rudolph Clark, fomerly first - aid miner on U. S. Bureau of Mines Rescue Car 11 , was placed in charge. as manager . A board of directors made up of a representative from each of the cooperating companies (usually the mine superintendent ) is the governing body of the Association and the expenses are prorated on a basis of the production of each of the five mines . The Association maintains eight sets of Gibbs rescue apparatus and a motor truck fitted up as a combined rescue truck and ambulance . Additional apparatus are to be purchased . Standardville is the central camp in the canyon and has been made the headquarters of the Association . The apparatus are now kept and the truck housed in a small station, but plans have been prepared for a large station which will be built this summer . This new station will have a large apparatus room , a test chamber, a suitable room. for training, and a garage on the first floor, while above will be the living quarters of the manager . There is a good road through the canyon and the other camps are all within two and one -half miles of Standardville .

The Bureau of Mines used regression analysis and applied statistical methods in an effort to rationalize the results of an experiment examining the effects of certain variables on carbon deposition in a reservoir for thermal recovery of petroleum. Although none of the 15 trials of the original experiment resulted in the response of weight-percent of carbon regarded by the experimenter as adequate, values calculated using canonical analysis in two trials yielded responses 33 and 54 percent higher than the minimum acceptable figure. The actual responses differed by less than 3 and 6 percent, respectively, from the predicted responses. Methods are described for defining a path of increasing response based on the minimum point and the response surfaces and for defining a set of values for the parameters in question, which result in increased response, A detailed explanation of the mathematical process used in this analysis is presented in the appendix for ease in computer programing the technique.

Noise induced hearing loss continues to afflict workers in many occupational settings despite longstanding recognition of the problems and well-known methods of prevention and regulations. Sound levels associated with heavy construction equipment range from 80 to 120 dB(A) and power tools commonly used in construction produce sound levels up to 115 dB(A).(1) The focus of this research was to determine the noise exposures of heavy construction equipment operators while documenting the workers’ tasks, (i.e. hauling, moving, and/or pushing construction material). Time-motion studies were performed at the construction sites and were used to correlate the noise dosage with the work performed by equipment operators. The cumulative dose for the operator was then plotted with references to work tasks, to identify the tasks that caused the greatest noise exposure. Three construction sites were studied for this research located in the western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio areas. The types of construction equipment studied included asphalt pavers, backhoes, bulldozers, compaction equipment, excavators, haul trucks, telehandlers, and wheeled loaders. The results showed that bulldozer operators consistently had the highest noise exposures, ranging from a NIOSH REL (Recommended Exposure Limit) dose of 844% to 25,836% and an OSHA PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) dose of 139% to 1,397%.

The Bureau of Mines, investigated a cyanidation-carbon adsorption technique for extracting gold from arsenopyrite concentrates. Agitation leach experiments were conducted on 85-pct-minus-35-mesh gravity concentrates containing 21.8 oz gold and 6.4 oz silver per ton. Results obtained in leaching the concentrates showed that 96.9 pct gold and 90.7 pct silver extraction could be achieved in 96 hours of agitation. Gold and silver were recovered from the resulting pregnant solution by exposure to granular activated carbon in a countercurrent system. Carbon loadings of 2,556 oz of gold and 502 oz of silver per ton were achieved. These loadings are significantly higher than heretofore thought practical.

"Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that woo set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606, Manganese Investigations. 1. A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

The Bureau of Mines has developed, on a laboratory scale, a superior Eluex-type circuit for eluting and recovering uranium from ion exchange resins. The improved circuit differs from conventional Eluex practice in that a stage of uranium solvent extraction is coupled with each stage of resin elution rather than the elution and solvent extraction operations being conducted separately. The new system reduces the number of stages, retention time, and resin inventory in the elution circuit to one-fourth or one-fifth that in existing circuits. The system is applicable to both resin-in-pulp and moving-bed-type ion exchange uranium recovery circuits.

The objective was to obtain qualitative information on (1 ) the stress field in a core stub at the bottom, or face , of a cored borehole and (2 ) whether , and at what distance , in terms of core diameters from the face of the borehole , relief of stresses in the core is complete . The photoelastic and brittle lacquer techniques of stress analysis were used to determine the pattern of stresses in two- dimensional models , simulating the bottom of a borehole with a projecting stub of core . The core was stress- free at 1-1 /2 core diameters or more from the face of the simulated borehole . The analyses of the isoclinic and isochromatic patterns in the core near the face of the borehole reveal why core occasionally breaks into thin plates , when core or stress - relief drilling is attempted in highly stressed rock masses , such as heavily loaded mine pillars . stub broke away from the bottom in a hydrostatically loaded artificial rock specimen in a manner indicating that core " wafering" can result from tensile stresses developed in the core when a coring bit penetrates the highly stressed rock mass .

Four chloride and seven fixed-nitrogen processes for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. The chloride processes are divided into two classes (leaching and chloridization) depending upon the major operation responsible for converting the manganese minerals to the chloride from which manganese oxide products are obtained. The fixed nitrogen processes, all of which yield high-grade manganese oxide products, are essentially either leaching or roasting processes. The 11 processes include HC1 leach, HC1 chloridization, HC1 chloride volatilization, CaC12 chloride volatilization, NO2 leach, HNO3 leach, HNO3 ?NO2 leach, H3 ?CO2-H2O system leach, (NH4)2SO4 leach, (NH4)2SO4 roast , and ammonium salt roast .

This surveillance report summarizes data on work-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, illnesses, and hazardous exposures in the mining industry for the 10-year period 1986-1995. The term ?surveillance,? as used in public health, may be new to many readers of this report. With regard to occupational safety and health, the goal of surveillance is to describe the occurrence of work-related injuries, illnesses, and known hazardous exposures; to identify new hazards that may occur due to the introduction of new technology or other factors; and to assess the effects of preventive measures designed to improve worker safety and health. Surveillance provides an overall picture, which can be used to focus resources on areas most in need of prevention programs or further research. Surveillance generally requires the use of multiple sources of data, all of which have their own strengths and limitations. Surveillance in the U.S. mining industry is complicated by the fact that U.S. national data systems that provide information on mining are based on two different definitions of the mining industry. One is established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the other by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System [Office of Management and Budget 1987] and the 1980 U.S. Bureau of the Census (BOC) Classification System [U.S. Bureau of the Census 1982].
