The Bureau of Mines studied solid-state electromigration to determine the value of the technique as a method of purifying cerium metal. Cerium metal in bars 6 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter was refined at 600° C by solid-state electrolysis to remove iron, copper, and manganese. Iron and manganese were electrotransported to the anode and copper was electrotransported to the cathode. The concentration of iron at the anode of a cerium bar was 800 times greater than the concentration at the cathode. The concentration of manganese at the anode was twice the value at the cathode. The concentration of copper was 170 times greater at the cathode than at the anode. A radiotracer technique was used to follow the iron migration in the cerium metal. Molybdenum, silicon, and aluminum impurities were not electrotransported.

Corduroy is used for saving gold in small Land large milling plants throughout the world. Investigations by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mine indicate that corduroy blankets, used with or without a trap or jig in the mill classifier circuit, often are effective in concentrating gold and sulfides, especially if the gold does not amalgamate readily and if not enough sulfides are present to warrant the use of a shaking table, flotation cells, or cyanide plant. Most cold-mining countries include several or many small miner, that produce siliceous ores low in sulfides and gold, which can easily be amalgamated or caught in traps or jigs or on corduroy and shaking tables. At these mines the ore is crushed by stamps or bill mills, and the flow sheets include plates, flotation cells, and cyanide treatment, yet probably nearly as much of the pair minerals may be recovered by the less expensive plant. A well-known western maker of mine and mill equipment asserts, as the result of considerable observation of installed plants, that old and other valuable minerals should be caught as soon as they have been released by a mill, end recommends jigs to do this. A supplier of corduroy has informed us that at some mines this material is being replaced by jigs that catch gold as fine as 400-mesh. But for the small operator, inexpensive equipment such as a corduroy table may be better adapted and give a good recovery of gold and associated minerals.

"SUMMARYElectron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate in the Cr(VI) glutathione redox reactions. These results indicate a new mechanism for the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione in relationship to cellular environment and suggest that synergistic reactions of Cr(V) and GS· might be responsible for the (unexpected) increase in the Cr(VI)-induced DNA-strand breaks at high glutathione levels.INTRODUCTIONWhile the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH) is thought to be a critical' step in the pathogenesis of the Cr(VI)-exposure related carcinogenesis1- 4, the exact reduction mechanism is not yet understood. The following reaction steps have been suggested :(A) Initial step:Cr04 2- + GSH - GSCrOa - (1)(B) At high GSH levels:GSCroa- + GSH - Cr( IV) + GSSG (2)(C) At low GSH levels: GSC rO a - - Cr ( V ) + GS ·(3)Thus far, however, in these reactions, the GS· radical has eluded spectroscopic detection, while the evidence for the Cr(V) formation has been reported positives as well as negative2·. Her~ we present spin-trap ESR evidence for the formation of the GS· radical, and a definitive ESR detection of an isolable cr(V)-GSH intermediate in Cr(VI)-GSH reactions.MATERIALS. AND METHODSESR spectra were obtained at X-band (-9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200D ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR Gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035M) and the microwave frequency was measured with a Hewlett-Packard (Model 5340A) frequency counter. The spin probes, a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide) -N -tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) and 5,5-dimethyl~1-pyrroline-1-ox1de (DMPO) were purchased from Aldrich, K2Cr201 from Fisher and used without further purification. All experiments were done at room temperature."

This report describes experimental investigations made in the batchwise retorting of Colorado oil shale. Three heat-carrying mediums were used -hot shale gas, superheated steam, and hot flue gas. Using hot Shale gas for retorting, the several variables studied were retort-inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity through the shale bed, shale particle size, and grade of shale. In studying the effect of any one of these variables on oil yield, as and operability, the other variables were maintained essentially constant. Oil yields decreased with increasing in-let-gas temperature and increasing shale-particle size, and oil yield increased with increasing grade of Shale up to 50 gallons of oil per ton of shale, beyond which the process was inoperable because of swelling and caking of the shale during retorting. Changes in gas velocity had little effect on oil yield. Gas yield increased with increasing inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity, particle size, and shale grade. Oil yields of 100 percent of Fischer assay and from 1,600 to 1,800 cubic feet of 300-B.t.u. gas per ton of shale were obtained. Two runs only were made using superheated steam. Oil yields averaged 97 percent of Fischer assay, and gas yields averaged 4,00o cubic feet per ton of shale. Retorting with a hot flue gas produced from combustion in the shale bed, as in the N-T-U process, gave excellent yields using closely sized shale with recycling of flue gas. An excess of fine shale in the charge resulted in channeling and low oil yields. Using no recycle gas, good yields were obtained that tended to decrease with increasing air rate, and the retorting rate increased with increasing air rate over the range studied. Coking was not found serious with 30-gallon shale at the air rates used.

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 1927 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein.

Since the organization of the Federal Bureau of Mines, part of the duties of the field men of the Safety Division has been to teach those connected with the minerals industries how to render the proper assistance to an injured worker between the time of the accident and the time when the injured receives medical attention--in other words, "first aid to the injured." For a number of years after the training was introduced, the response of mine officials and workers was very slow. Many times Bureau instructors devoted at least a week to training 5 to 15 or a few more men. However, in recent years since the companies and the Bureau of Mines have had an opportunity to study the results of first aid training, it has been found that in addition to taking care of an injured worker after an accident and thereby greatly reducing the severity rate, the tendency is for the majority of those who take the training to be more careful in their work, or to be more "safety conscious."

In this paper, single-component gas sorption and transient diffusion processes are described within coal matrix exhibiting bimodal pore structure. The coal matrix is treated as a poroelastic medium manifesting swelling and shrinkage effects due to the sorption of gas under effective overburden stress. Gas transport is considered Fickian with molecular (bulk) and surface diffusion processes simultaneously taking place in the macro-and micropores of coal, respectively. The numerical formulation is intended to be explicit in nature to investigate the influences of sorption phenomena on the macropore volumes and on the overall gas transport for the cases of gas uptake by and release from coal. Results of the study show the presence of hysteresis during a sorption?desorption cycle of the gas. It is also found that the overall gas transport takes place at a rate significantly less than that in the macropores only. Thus the existence of a retardation effect in the overall gas transport is concluded. This retardation effect is primarily due to the micropore resistances, in particular gas adsorption, and is independent of the changes in the macropore volumes. It is shown that macroporosity of the coal matrix may change during gas transport due to combined effects of pressure and sorption-induced swelling or shrinkage of the coal. It is estimated that the macroporosity variation is non-uniform in space and time, as it is expected in reality, and typically taking values less than ±10 percent of the initial porosity.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration and distribution of precious metals in the various fractions produced from mechanical processing of obsolete military electronic scrap. Whole avionic units, printed circuit cards, and electrical connectors were processed and analyzed. Materials recovered included baghouse lights, wire bundles, mag-netics, and metal concentrates from eddy-current and high-tension sepa-ration. Higher value fractions were processed by a commercial toll refiner for recovery of gold and silver. Lower value fractions were analyzed by the Bureau. Three fractions, the lights, wire bundles, and metallics from high-tension separation, contained most of the precious metals. Depending on the type of scrap feed, these fractions represented 34 to 60 pct of the original sample weight. Collectively, they represented 68 to 97 pct and 75 to 98 pct of the contained gold and silver, respectively.

"Before discussing oil shales it may be well to consider briefly the conditions surrounding the petroleum industry in the United States, because these largely explain why so much interest is being manifested in oil shales. The United States is not only the greatest producer of petroleum in the world, its output amounting to about 65 per cent of the world's total production; but is also the world's greatest consumer, using more petroleum than it produces within its own borders. For the past four or five years it has been necessary to import oil at a continually increasing rate to make up the deficit between domestic production and domestic consumption. Experts who have made a close study of the future supply and demand for, crude petroleum are satisfied that under present production practice and with the development of possible undeveloped productive areas, the gap between domestic consumption and production will steadily .increase.As possible solutions for the impending domestic shortage of oil, various expedients are receiving attention. These may be grouped under three heads, as follows:(1) Temporary measures, such as curtailment of consumption, development of more efficient methods of production, and more efficient utilization of supplies of petroleum still available. It is unlikely that there will be any great curtailment in consumption of petroleum in the United States; rather, consumption will continue to increase unless a real shortage of oil actually forces curtailment of consumption. The other two possibilities mentioned deserve, and are resolving, serious thought. Much experimental work along these lines, some of which has already yielded excellent results, is being done. Obviously, however, any of these remedies are temporary ones only, so far as regards domestic production of petroleum."

"INTRODUCTION The San Antonio Canyon prospect was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943 and again in October 1944. In July 1944, the United States Geological Survey mapped the prospect and submitted a report 4/ recommending core drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The drilling project, which was supervised by the author, was started on January 10 and completed on May 10, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "Production of explosives in the United States during the calendar year 1935 decreased 2 percent from 1934, according to reports covering all companies engaged in the manufacture of explosives during those years.Reports from manufacturers showed a total production of 308,381,250 pounds of explosives; this quantity included 39,170,016 pounds of permissible explosives 5/ 200,323,559 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and 68,887,675 pounds of black blasting powder of which 34,222,625 pounds were granular powder and 34,665,050 pounds pellet powder.Coal mines consumed 89 percent of the total production of blasting powder, 99 percent of the total output of permissible explosives, and 11 percent of the output of other high explosives.The metal mines of the United States used 28 percent of all high explosives other than permissloles, less than 1 percent of all permissibles, and 1 percent of all black powder produced.Quarries and nonmetallic-mineral mines consumed 17 percent of the high explosives other than pormissibles, less than 1 percent of the permissible., and 3 percent of the blasting powder.Construction work required the largest quantity, 40 percent of all high explosives manufactured during the year. Less than 1 percent of the permissibles and 6 percent of the black powder produced during 1935 was used in construction work."

A fatal explosion in a sealed area at the Sago Mine in 2006 prompted researchers and regulators in the United States to re-examine the requirements for explosion-resistant mine seals. Seals are used in underground coal mines to isolate abandoned mining areas from active workings. Prior to the Sago disaster, mining regulations required seals to withstand a 140 kPa explosion pressure. Recent research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)Pittsburgh Research Laboratory showed that pressures from explosions can far exceed this pressure. U.S. mining regulations now require much stronger seals. Current research focuses on understanding the science, engineering and management of sealed areas of coal mines. Scientific efforts seek understanding of how explosive methane-air mixtures accumulate using measurements and models of the sealed area atmosphere. Additional scientific efforts aim to understand the explosion pressures that can develop using a combination of numerical modeling and experiments. Engineering efforts aim to produce design guidelines for seals that can resist the new higher pressure design criteria. NIOSH researchers are also developing guidance for monitoring of sealed area atmospheres and inertization of potentially explosive gas mixtures within sealed areas. This paper seeks to encourage scientific discussion among international peers since preventing explosions within sealed areas is of interest to underground coal operators and regulators.

Pilot-plant tests have been in progress at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., on the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag.3/4/5/ In the process, 1 the slag is first reduced in a blast furnace to make a high-phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 12 to 22 percent manganese. A slag containing 55 to 60 percent manganese is made from this spiegel by oxidation in a basic-lined converter. The metal from this blowing operation contains about 3 percent phosphorus, 1 percent manganese, and less than 1 percent carbon. Economic efficiency in the manganese-recovery process requires that this metal be converted into steel. Because of its high phosphorus content the metal is suitable for blowing in a basic-lined converter. In most of the tests described in this report, metal of this composition was used as the starting material in a 1-ton, side-blown, basic-lined converter. Although basic-lined converters are not used for steel production in the United states, in Europe a considerable portion of the steel is made in them. Open hearths largely have replaced converters for steelmaking in the United States; mainly because open-hearth steels have better physical properties than converter steels because of lower nitrogen and phosphorus contents. However, by improving converter design and operating technique during the past 15 years, metallurgists have found that low-nitrogen steels with physical properties equal to open-hearth steels can be produced in converters.6/ Tests at Jones & Laughlin steel Corp. with side-blown, acid-lined converters of 3 and 22 tons capacity showed that steel with a low nitrogen content comparable to that of open hearths operating on scrap charges could be made by surface blowing.7/

"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. "The microscopic work described below was engaged in primarily into ascertain the approximate proportions in which the copper sulphides existed in the ore examined, and by a comparison of the results obtained from a study of both head are tailing samples to supply data which might be of value in treating the ore by flotation. Incidentally, the physical characteristics and association of the sulphides were noted in order to determine the possible relation or bearing of these features on the present conditions of treatment. Since the copper in the ore occurred as three distinct sulphide minerals - chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite each containing copper in different proportions, there appeared to be little or no possibility of obtaining the desired information by chemical methods of determination.Type of material examinedThe material examined was in the crushed condition and was said to be representative of the flotation feed or heads and the resulting tailing. No hand samples of the ore were examined nor any account taken of the physical condition and association of the minerals in place, because the possible value of the analytical results depended on conditions as they existed in the crushed ore. As the problems under consideration dealt only with the sulphide minerals, especially those of copper, the products from screen sizing were concentrated by hand panning and the gangue discarded. The concentrate obtained consisted almost entirely of the sulphide minerals, since the panning had been very carefully done. The object of this procedure was to obtain a sufficient quantity of high-grade sulphide material, from the sample of each screen size selected for examination, to permit its being so prepared for examination as to be representative of the physical characteristics exhibited by a large number of sulphide grains from each respective size, In the tests and investigations carried on by the company' treating the ore the following sizes had been used in tabulating data and basing conclusions:+48, +65, +100, +150, +200, and -200. These same sizes were used in the microscopic investigation, since the results obtained thereby could be most readily utilized for comparison with the results obtained in previous experimental work, together with deductions based on actual concentration of the ore on a commercial scale."

"Up to the last 10 or 15 years, responsibility for accidents in mines was generally, though not universally, placed upon the person or persons immediately involved. Present-day thought is rapidly veering toward holding the industry responsible for accidents, with ultimate payment of the bill by the consumer, if financial expenditure should be necessary. While it is undoubtedly correct in principle that responsibility for accidents in and around mines should be shouldered by the employer and while it is probable that as time passes the burden will become even more definitely than now that of the mining companies, on the other hand it is an undeniable fact that large numbers of accidents occur through acts of omission or of commission of some person, very frequently the victim of the accident being the offender.Out of about 3,000 persons killed every rear in our -mines and quarries, nearly half or approximately 1,500 of the fatalities are due to falls of overlying material or of persons, about 500 to haulage, about 350 to fires and explosions, about 125 to explosives, approximately the same number to electricity, and about 300 to various miscellaneous accidents.Generally the accidents from falls involve but one or two persons at a time, and the tendency is now as it always has been to charge the victim or possibly a coworker with the responsibility. Usually this sort of accident occurs at or near a working face (statistics indicate that about 80 per cent of fatalities from falls of roof or rib occur near the face), and as it is Generally agreed that it is the duty of the worker to keep his working place safe, the worker and especially the face worker is given the blame in case of accident."

"INTRODUCTION The limited domestic demands for lithium salts and metal before the war were met readily by the use of minerals particularly lepidolite (lithium mica) and amblygonite (a lithium phosphate), from which lithium can be recovered relatively easily. New wartime uses, however, created such a demand that it became necessary to turn to spodumene (a lithium feldspar) as the principal source of supply. Although very large deposits of spodumene occur in South Dakota and in North Carolina, it much more difficult to extract lithium from spodumene than from lepidolite or amblygonite.During the spring and summer of 1942 a study was made in Salt Lake City laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of lithium from spodumede. Preliminary tests were made on two processes - roasting with potassium sulfate 4/ 5/ and roasting with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate 6/ -,which appeared to be the most promising of the various processes that had been proposed. By roasting spodumene with approximately its own weight of potassium sulfate at 1,050º C. and leaching the product with water, about 70 percent of the lithium could be extracted. Consumption of the relatively expensive potassium sulfate, however, was high; much of the potassium was found in the insoluble leach residue, end large amounts were lost by volatilization and dusting. By roasting the spodumene with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate, nearly 90 percent of the lithium was chloridized temperatures of 850° to 1,050° C. Much of the lithium could be extracted from the calcine by leaching with water after roasting at the lower temperatures, but volatilization of lithium chloride was appreciable, amounting to 20 to 25 percent in a direct gas-fired furnace at temperatures of 800° to 850° C. At 1,000° to 1,050° C., volatilization was far from complete. Thus, it would be necessary to use both fume collection and leaching of the calcine, unless the roasting temperatures were sufficiently high to volatilize all the lithium chloride. Because of the well-known difficulties of collecting chloride fumes, it was decided to search for a better process."

"On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of mixing a compressed-air-generated foam with dried whole-grain silica sand to suppress dust in minerals processing plants. Dust at downstream transfer points was monitored with personal gravimetric samplers and with Real-Time Aerosol Monitors (RAM's) that were connected to strip' chart recorders. Results showed dust reductions of 80 to 90 pct on three separate occasions at two different plants. The mechanism by which foam suppresses dust is discussed, as are the constraints on the use of foam, which may include incompatibility of the foam with the mineral product, difficulty in controlling the foam generator, and cost.

"As movement or transportation of coal is second only in importance to actual mining, and as the latter is wholly dependent on the former, the efficiency of the haulage system often determines the efficiency of the entire plant. Safe or accident-free transportation is essential, also, because no attempt is made to divorce safety and efficiency, it being realized that they are inseparable.Most of the Ruhr mines were opened decades ago, and many features that were considered up-to-date then are now obsolete. Progress in developing haulage systems has been slow, chiefly because it would be very costly to change many to accomodate more modern equipment. These systems are being altered or modernized slowly, as capital permits. The only revolutionary changes that have been made in mine haulage are the use of larger locomo¬tives and cars, in the movement of shuttle cars, and in the adoption of skip hoisting. Most Ruhr shafts, however, will not accomodate large cars, the secondary roadways are too narrow for large locomotives, and the coal is too soft to permit skip hoisting because degradation would be too great. Therefore, notable advances have been made only at newer plants, where allowances have been made for modern equipment.The shafts are deep (average 2,300 feet) and of comparatively small diameter. The small bore was designed to reduce costs of sinking and lining. Generally, the shafts are lined throughout with masonry; however, most of the buntons and guides are wooden.The hoisting engines arc installed in masonry structures, and where more than one hoist is used they are placed on opposite sides of the shaft to eliminate as much noise as possible (fig. 1). This arrangement also prevents an engineer from acting on any signals except those transmitted to him. A few hoisting engines are mounted in the headframes (fig. 2). The hoisting engines are equipped with overwind, overspeed, and auxiliary braking devices, which are tested frequently and kept operative at all times. The signal code is displayed in view of the engineer, and a light or dial indicator informs him of the cage's position in the shaft. Many hoists are equipped with re¬cording devices, which show on a continuous chart the speed of hoisting as well as any delays throughout the 24-hour period.A Koepe system of winding is in general use because of the depth of shafts (fig. 3). With this system, a single rope passes over a single-groove, large-diameter sheave attached to the motive power, and the ends of the rope, after passing over the head sheaves, are attached to the cages. A flat tail rope suspended in the shaft and connected to the bottom of the cages serves to balance the system. Both steam and electric engines are used to activate the hoisting system, end the engines are capable of moving at least a 50-percent overload.The ropes are necessarily of large diameter (2-1/2 inches and greater), and flexibility decreases as rope diameter increases. To overcome the unwieldiness .of large-diameter ropes as shafts become deeper, a four-rope system is being tried at one mine (fig.4). In this system the load is equalized between four ropes which permits much smaller ropes to be used. All hoist ropes are inspected daily and discarded after 2 years service unless special permission for longer service is granted by the Mine Inspectorate, and then only after thorough visual and electromagnetic inspection."
