Ghana, a major West African gold-producing country, took a crucial step in 1986 to allow private participation in mining ventures that had hitherto been state controlled and starved of funds. This decision has led to a three-fold rise in gold production with substantial local and foreign capital once again flowing into exploration and mining projects. Though the rise in gold export is due primarily to increased production from large mines such as Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Billiton Bogosu Gold, Tebrebie Goldfields and Ghana Australia Gold that work primary lode gold deposits on quartz veins and Banket conglomerates, a fair amount of gold comes from placer gold mining from which two new mines have been developed at Kwabeng and Bonte during the current gold boom. Also, placer gold mining is important locally because the lower capital outlay required for its development enables many entrepreneurs to operate small concessions and provide employment for a large pool of unskilled labor. Placer gold exploration and development in Ghana is labor-intensive. Pitting is the most used method although few employ the mechanized (“Banka”) drilling. The advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches in the local setting are discussed. The gravel is normally sluiced and the gold recovered by amalgamation. The drawbacks to successful placer gold exploration in Ghana have been attributed to lapses in execution of exploration programs (Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Arhin, 1993; Dzigbodi-Adjimah and Gawu, 1994). However, the failure to recognize and set time frameworks and financial limitations for the various stages of placer gold exploration have spelt the doom of some projects. It is critical that the characteristics of the placer gold deposit be determined by efficient and cost effective means. A planned exploration supported by adequate flow of funds saves costs and leads to success. This article discusses the current Ghanaian situation and presents proposals from case studies for planning and budgeting placer gold exploration pro-grams for use in similar settings.

The problem of processing refractory (rebellious) gold ores is important for all the countries involved in recovering precious metals from ores. Technological aspects of processing precious metal ores are examined in two respects: enhancing gold recovery from double refractory ores; and using carbonaceous ores on a production scale. The dispersed carbonaceous matter (DCM) present in concentrates causes the adsorption of [Au(CN)2]- complex on their surface during cyanidation process. Depending on the degree of graphitization and the organic carbon content in DCM (including kerogens and bitumen), the technology used to recover precious metals varies considerably. The problem of processing refractory (rebellious) gold ores is important for all the countries involved in recovering precious metals from ores. Depending on the degree of graphitization and the organic carbon content in DCM (including kerogens and bitumen), the technology used to recover precious metals varies considerably. The possibility of rare metals recovery, including rhenium, from black-shale rocks, has been examined. Comparative assessment of analytical methods of rare metals detecting has been carried out. It has been proved that neutron activation analysis is a promising technique. It has been shown that colloid-salt fraction (nanofraction) with particle size less than 1000 nm makes up to 3 wt% of black shale samples and is extracted by water under special conditions. The use of water instead of chemically active reagents provides insolubility of the mineral matrix and fully reflects the colloid-salt element of the samples. To sum up, the justification of the choice of technology for processing of carbon-bearing ores is based on examining the type of carbonaceous matter and its adsorption behavior. When the content of carbon of high degree of metamorphism is considerable, it is possible to recover platinum group elements and rare elements from this type of ores. The obtained results predetermine the general guidelines for creating new methods and techniques of processing carbonaceous material for integral development of solid minerals in the mining and oilfield areas of Russia.

"One approach to making new technology available is to demonstrate its value under full-scale operating conditions. Studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of this approach to introducing a longwall mining system to the western Canadian coalfields.The longwall method of mining coal is described, world and Canadian usage is reviewed, and the merits of the system in comparison 10 other coal mining methods are discussed.The rationale for a longwall demonstration in western Canada is presented, along with a proposed organization for the design, operation and dissemination of the findings from such a trial. The factors which must be considered in the design of the demonstration, and in the assessment of a potential site are highlighted. It is concluded that a demonstration of this technology is both timely and essential to prepare the way for the western Canadian coal industry of future prospects for coal.IntroductionFor many years CANMET has encouraged research work organized on a cooperative basis. This requires that a working consensus must be negotiated by researchers and operators at the beginning of the project and continuously refined as work proceeds. The result is usually a more relevant selection of research problems, improved direct ion and con duct of experiment al work and often a validation phase in which research concepts are tested in an opera ting environment. All this tends to narrow the gap between obtaining research results and applying them.Even under the best of circumstances cooperative projects require a good deal of coordination and enthusiasm to maintain focus and the pace of work. The working perspective of a research scientist in a government laboratory is substantially different from that of a mine operator at a producing mine, and a common ground must be found. This is difficult to do and cooperative projects typically evolve over several years as experimental results progressively define the potential solutions to mining problems."

"In order to determine its capabilities and to aid in the interpretation of fie ld results, a scale model study and field tests were carried out on the Crone borehole pulse electromagnetic (PEM) system. The model results indicate that if a borehole passes in the vicinity of a tabular conductive body, the system will not only detect the presence of the body, but will also return information as to its conductivity-thickness product, size, altitude and position.The effect of variation of these electromagnetic and geometric factors on the shape of the response curve from a borehole PEM survey is displayed by a number of suites of scale-model response curves. These model curves can be used directly as type curves in the interpretation of field results. Field tests of a prototype PEM system provide a check on the scale-model results and also summarize the procedure of interpreting field data using the model type curves.The borehole pulse EM system can be effectively used as a follow-up geophysical instrument for locating and delineating known conductive bodies. It can also be profitably utilized as a primary geophysical exploration tool in areas of deep mineralization below the depth limit of conventional airborne and ground geophysical systems. The probed area of a diamond drill hole in these cases is increased from a 1- inch drill core to a zone extending hundreds of feet from the hole."

"Experimental and pilot operations in bituminous sand processing require due care and attention in the design and analysis of measurement programs. This paper deals with a case study in experimental design and data analysis for a series of experimental campaigns that have been conducted over the past five years by Kilborn Western Inc., acting on behalf of Bitmin Resources. Beginning with the design of the experiment and following into the use of linear and nonlinear regression models, the phenomenology of bitumen extraction is illustrated. The final testing program tested 13 oil sand types as well as a wide range of process variables for all the unit operations of the complete process.The program was successful in developing process fundamentals and scale-up criteria. Several phenomenological models were proposed and tested. Their range of applicability was explored. This paper illustrates the range of applicability of these models and discusses the development of alternative models.IntroductionOver the past five years Kilborn has conducted a series of bench scale and pilot scale experiments designed to explore the phenomenolgy of a new concept in medium temperature processing of bituminous ores. These experiments at feed rates ranging from .1 to 24 t/h were conducted on water wet sands from the .Athabasca region near Fort McMurray. They were based on experimental designs chosen to provide a systematic means of identifying the response surfaces of the process over a range of conceptual designs. "IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel ore deposits are located in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada (Fig. 1). Many papers have been published on Key Lake in the past (Dahlkarnp and Tan, 1977; Kirchner and Tan, 1977; Kirchner et al., 1980). Immediately after its incorporation in 1968, Uranerzbergbau GmbH, a German holding company, set up exploration subsidiaries in Australia, the United States and Canada. This account reviews those exciting years starting with the concept to explore the rim of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, and leading up to the discovery of the deposits in 1975 and 1976.A few summary statements can be made:• The discovery of Key Lake resulted from a very systematic exploration approach and the persistence of Uranerz, the operator. • Cluff Lake and Rabbit Lake had been discovered some seven years before, but it was the discovery of the Key Lake deposits which brought Saskatchewan to the forefront to become Canada's foremost uranium producing province.• The experiences gained at Key Lake, which were subsequently published, triggered the discovery of many other deposits of similar, or even larger, size than Key Lake. The spatial relationship of those deposits to graphitic conductors and hydrothermal alteration zones are presently the most effective indicators for locating new deposits - indicators which were first recognized at Key Lake.• Key Lake is, and will remain for some years to come, the largest producing high-grade uranium mine in the world."

"Australia's prosperity relies significantly on income generated from exports of resources and agricultural products. In 1989-1990, coal was Australia's most valuable export commodity, contributing. A $5.7 billion or 14% of all export income.The abundance and quality of its coal resources and the proximity of Australia to the rapidly developing economies of Southeast Asia were significant factors that encouraged export-oriented growth and investment and will continue to do so. On the other hand, the 1980shighlighted the sensitivity of the industry to international changes in supply and demand, currency and socio-political forces.Following many years of disappointing returns for investors, mainly as a result of falling Australian dollar coal prices, resolve will be necessary to maintain competitiveness with resource-rich nations. In recent years, operators, unions and governments have begun to embark on a long overdue rationalization of domestic issues in a bid to increase productivity and reduce costs.The nature of mining operations is also changing; deeper surface mines and the growth of longwall mining will require the development of new technology and skills. Other challenges emerging from the international environmental debate will require that Australia responds appropriately to demands for cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.The future development of the Australian coal industry will therefore be influenced by its own ability to become more efficient and mature in the production of quality coal products and through rational international response to environmental questions."

"This paper presents the design and application of blasthole mining to an area at Strathcona Mine previously employing post pillar cut-and-fill. Extensive mining in the area had led to gradually deteriorating ground conditions and post pillar stoping was no longer considered acceptable. Alternative methods had to be investigated.Conventional methods for mining in poor ground were rejected because of the high cost. Blasthole mining was selected because iI offered good productivity and safety with acceptable costs. The design of this approach involved field investigations and the use of numerical modelling to simulate the different blasthole options and their impact on ground stability. The blasthole design incorporated reinforcement with cablebolts, use of a radio-controlled remote LHD unit, large-diameter holes, blast design and wall control. Potentially unstable areas were outlined during mining with ground monitoring instruments and the results used to modify mining plans during the production phase.IntroductionIn underground metal mines there is a need to improve safety and productivity and lower mining costs in order to maintain reasonable rates of return on investment. This requires the application of good engineering design to both mine planning and ground control in order to optimize production and costs and to forecast potential problems during mining. The task becomes more important when extensive mining leads to gradually deteriorating ground conditions, making existing mining methods and techniques no longer acceptable from a safety point of view. Alternative mining methods must, however, be sufficiently productive to ensure profitability. This paper presents an example of the engineering design and operating approach used by Falconbridge in dealing with such a situation at Strathcona Mine."

"In 1979 Chevron Standard Limited and Irving Oil Limited intersected a thick, high-grade sylvinite zone in the Windsor Group in the Chevron Irving Malagawatch No. I well in central Cape Breton. This well was the third and final hole of a program designed to evaluate a non-commercial oil discovery made by Chevron Standard's Mineral Staff in 1978 while carrying out base metal exploration. Nine holes were subsequently drilled to evaluate the significance of the potash discovery. The delineation drilling proved the Malagawatch structure to be complex with the potash zone showing erratic grade and thickness distribution. Based on the drill information the potash accumulation at Malagawatch is uneconomic, however, other salt ""structures"" in the Bras d'Or Basin may in time prove to have better potential.History of DiscoveryIn 1972 Cuvier Mines discovered the Gays River lead-zinc deposit (MacEachern and Hannon, 1974) which prompted Chevron Standard's Minerals Staff to carry out a study of the Windsor basins in Nova Scotia (Figs. I and 2). As a result of this program several carbonate-hosted lead-zinc prospects were identified in the basal Windsor carbonate; one of these was at Malagawatch on Cape Breton Island . In 1978, after preliminary exploration surveys, a diamond drill program commenced consisting of 5 BQ holes (Fig. 3), three of which tested the basal carbonate. Instead of the reefoid bank facies of the Gays River Formation (Giles et al., 1979), the favoured host for economic base metal mineralization, this carbonate was developed as a laminated, pelletoidal, lime packstone more characteristic of the facies equivalent Macumber Formation (Schenk, 1967). While drilling one of these holes, No. 3-78, oil scum was intermittently detected on the drilling mud. The hole was abandoned at 191 m in anhydrite, without having reached the basal limestone."

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel's Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

"Eastern Canadian thermal coal mined at Minto, New Brunswick, and in western Cape Breton at St. Rose, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, contains 6-8 per cent sulphur. Both coals are high volatile bituminous. types. The Minto coal averages 18 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and has a Btu rating of 11,900 per lb. Pyritic sulphur accounts for 75 per cent of the total sulphur and the remainder is largely organic; the amount of sulphate sulphur is negligible. This means that in a 7 per cent sulphur coal, 2 per cent is organic and 5 per cent pyritic sulphur. Pit-head St. Rose coal contains approximately 10 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and 11 ,800 Btu/lb. The distribution of sulphur is different to that of Minto coal because about 12 per cent sulphate sulphur is present. Thus, a 7 per cent sulphur coal would contain 4 per cent pyritic, 2 per cent organic and 1 per cent sulphate sulphur.The iron sulphides, pyrite and, to a lesser extent, marcassite occur over a wide size range from large sulphur balls to crack fillings, lenses, and individual crystals and framboids. Coarse-grained pyrite and sulphur balls are easily separated during washing. It is the fine grain sizes, intimately mixed with the coal constituents, that are difficult to separate. Quantimet analyses of the fine grains in coal from both localities showed that about 50 per cent were smaller than 30 micron(1).No efforts have been made to wash the Inverness coal of Nova Scotia and in 1980 washing ceased in New Brunswick. Previously, the Minto coal was processed in an antiquated jig circuit which reduced ash from the strip operation run-of-mine value of more than 20 per cent to less than 18. More effective removal of ash and sulphur could clearly be obtained. Laboratory tests on both Minto and St. Rose coal have shown that ash rejection rates of 40 to 50 per cent at yields of 70-80 per cent were possible(2), Little information on sulphur removal was available."

The importance of the Rabbit Lake operations - past, present and future.LocationThe Rabbit Lake operation is located in northeastern Saskatchewan (Fig. 1)- 805 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and 814 km northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. OwnershipGulf Minerals Canada Limited discovered the Rabbit Lake deposit in 1968. Mining operations began in 1975and were operated by Gulf until purchased by Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1982. In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world 's largest uranium companies.Cameco's $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). In addition, Cameco is involved in a number of base and precious metal explor ation projects."

The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. "The six mineable coal seams at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) vary in thickness from 0.75 m to 9.5 m and include waste partings varying from 0.2 m to 4 m thick. They are highly faulted and folded in some areas and dip angles range from horizontal to 90 degrees. Due to this variation in thickness and orientation of the seams, several different mining methods are used to economically recover the coal. The key to QCL's success depends on the timely collection of detailed geology data and on mine planning which allows selection of the best method of mining to achieve maximum coal recovery with minimum dilution and cost. This paper will describe the various methods of mining employed and the criteria used to select them. IntroductionThe unique challenge in mining at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) is to extract large quantities of coal and waste, from a complex orebody, with constricted areas for mining and waste disposal. This challenge dictates the mining of as many as four 10 m benches per year, through complicated coal structures, from three separate open pits with a total of 19coal seams. This total is made up of 5 seams at Mesa, 8 seams at Wolverine and 6 seams at Shikano (Fig. 1).Computer-aided mine planning and scheduling is carried out on a routine basis to ensure the prudent selection of methods of mining, to produce plans which ensure delivery of appropriately blended raw coals to the plant, and to coordinate disposal of large quantities of waste.Several methods of mining are applied simultaneously, and as a result coal and waste are released at different rates from twelve to fifteen mining faces. New deposits are often characterized as low-grade and complex ore bodies. To date, processing of fine grained ore deposits implies complex processing routes with high energy consumption. For that reason, the investigation of dry grinding, e.g. with vertical roller mills (VRM), is an approach to save energy reserves. It is already proven that dry grinding can influence subsequent processing steps. In terms of flotation, the surface characteristics of the minerals are crucial for a successful flotation process, e.g. the sufficient adhesion of mineral particles and air bubbles. Wet grinding results in different surface properties of the product entering the conditioning stage than dry grinding, which has direct influences on the subsequent flotation process. To investigate the consequences for flotation, processing of a copper sulfide ore containing chalcopyrite and bornite was investigated, including grinding and rougher flotation. The effects of wet tumbling mill and dry VRM grinding on the degree of liberation of valuable minerals are characterized using mineral liberation analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained flotation results, as well as the recorded flotation parameters such as dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential and conductivity are presented and discussed. INTRODUCTION Copper production is mainly connected to porphyry copper deposits as main source for copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite and bornite. State-of-the-art processing of these deposits is already established worldwide for decades, combining crushing, fine grinding and subsequent flotation with rougher, cleaner and scavenger stages (del Villar, Desbiens, & Maldonado, Bouchard, 2010). While the demand for copper is increasing, copper grades of the deposits are decreasing and the remaining ore bodies have more complex mineralogy and finer particle size distribution. This implies processing routes with high water and – due to the liberation of fine grained valuable minerals – high energy consumption by fine grinding. One of the main energy consumers in processing plants is the grinding section, which accounts for more than 50% of the energy consumption in processing plants and even 4% of the worldwide energy consumption (Jeswiet, & Szekeres, 2016). Therefore, dry fine grinding alternatives are applied to enhance the overall energy consumption of mineral processing plants: high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and vertical roller mills (VRM).

"One approach to stabilization of rock slopes is to place a buttress at the toe of the slope to provide additional resisting forces and increase the length and strength properties along the failure surface. This paper describes the rock mechanics and mine planning aspects of incorporating a buttress of intact rock in the lower part of the slope as part of the slope design for the south wall of the final pit at Cassiar Mine. Stability analysis techniques and results are described. Analyses results have indicated that, in order to maintain steep over-all slopes in the final pit, a buttress of intact rock shoud be incorporated into the lower section of the slope until late in mine life. The effect of the buttress is to flatten the slope and reduce the slope height thereby improving slope stability. The mining plans would be such that the buttress would be mined out during the last four months of mining when the consequences of instability would be least severe.IntroductionThe concept of using a buttress to stabilize slopes has been used in mining and civil engineering construction in may locations (Richards and Stimpson, 1977). Most buttresses involve placement of coarse rock fill timber cribs or other material as a load at the toe of an already unstable slope to provide forces which resist failure by counteracting driving forces and increasing the length and strength of the failure path.This paper describes the geotechnical and mine planning aspects of incorporating a buttress of intact rock in the design of the south wall of Cassiar Mine. The effect of an intact rock buttress is to flatten the slope and reduce the slope height, thereby improving slope stability. No actual construction is required other than normal excavation of the slope. The ""mine plans would be such that the buttress would be mined out at the end of mine life when the impact of instability would be less severe and additional ore might possibly be recovered from the slopes. Mining of the buttress could induce instability at the very end of mine life at a time when maximum ore extraction has been achieved."

"The effectiveness of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide pressure oxidation on the cyanide extractability of gold from a double-refractory concentrate is presented. Whileover90% of the sulphide content could be oxidized by either of the two acid pretreatments, only 65% was achieved by the peroxide oxidation. Carbon oxidation by both acid and peroxide pressure oxidation were less than 15%. Although the peroxide pressure oxidation pretreatment resulted in much lower sulphur and carbon oxidation, it gave pretreated residues with decreased levels of preg-robbing activities and higher gold recoveries during subsequent cyanidation, thus indicating some deactivation ofthe preg-robbing carbon during pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide. The refractoriness due to carbon preg-robbing activity was found to contribute more to the refractory behaviour of the concentrate than the occlusion of gold particles by the sulphide mineralization.IntroductionGold ores and concentrates are classified as refractory when a significant portion of the gold content cannot be extracted efficiently by conventional cyanidation, even after fme grinding (Weir and Berezowsky, 1984); (Demopoulos and Papangelakis, 1987). The refractory behaviour of precious metal ores and concentrates is generally attributed to two main factors: The presence of carbonaceous materials which could cause preg-robbing activity during cyanidation (Zaitseva et al., 1973); (Nice, 1971); Scheiner et al., 1971); (Eisele et al., 1983), or occlude gold-bearing minerals (Wells and Mullens, 1973); (Gasparrini, 1983); (Chen and Reddby, 1990), and the occurrence of sulphide minerals which can occlude gold, thus reducing the access of lixiviants (Schwartz, 1944); (Weir et al., 1986); (papangelakis and Demopoulos, 1990); (Michaelis, 1989); (Schweigart, 1965). When the refractoriness is due to a combination of these two factors, the ore or concentrate can be referred to as being ""double-refractory"". Because of the rarity of gold ores exhibiting this double-refractory phenomenon, only a few studies have been carried out on their suitability for pretreatment by existing techniques."

"The geological composition of strata immediately adjacent to coal seams has a significant effect on the safe and efficient extraction of coal from underground mines of the Sydney coalfield. Geological features such as paleo-sandstone river channels, seam splits, floor rolls, paleo-soils and stone-filled rupture features can rapidly alter the competency of immediate roof and floor strata, significantly reduce the height of the coal seam, cause rapid variations in seam gradient and influence the in situ and run-of-mine quality of the coal.The impact of these features on the over-all mining operation can be significantly reduced if mine management can be for-warned of their impending occurrence. Using the information acquired from boreholes, geological mapping, x-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic studies, geophysical logs and seismic surveys, sedimentary models have been constructed which enable the mine geologist to predict, with increasing accuracy, the future occurrence of deleterious geological features ahead of the working face."
