Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A numerical method for discriminating between replacement and sedimentary processes is applied to a folded stratiform sulphide occurrence. It is shown that numerical treatment of chemical analyses from a single diamond drill hole allowed a rapid assignment of the ore to the syngenetic sedimentary class and thereby enabled a revision of the evaluation program concerned with consequent reduction in costs.

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. That electricity is an important and valuable agent, the limit of whose capacity for utilisation is as yet unknown, is a truism; although enormous advances have been made, the possible developments are yet greater. Mining, along with other industries, shares already to a large extent in the practical utilisation of this agent. Electrical engineers have been employed for several years past in developing and applying electricity to all classes of machinery, and for every purpose where power is required and in no instance, that the writer is aware of, has its use been curtailed in favour of any other agency now known, while extensions are continually made. The first modern electric motor was shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, and it was used to work a pump through a mile length of cable but it was not before 1878, that an electric motor was put into daily commercial use by Messrs. Chretian and Felix to work a beet sugar hoist. This early plant effected a saving of 40 % as compared with hand work.In 1879, the first Electric Railway was constructed for the Berlin Exhibition, and in the same year, Mr. T. A. Edison was running an experimental line at Menlo Park. The first electric line opened for the public, was constructed by Siemens and Halske, in 1881, at Lichtenfelde, and was 11 miles in length.

Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions intended to compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by development projects. The use of biodiversity offsets in the context of mining has significant potential for enabling mining to take place in areas with biodiversity values, where it would not otherwise be possible to meet the relevant legal tests under the Resource Management Act 1991, and potentially the Conservation Act 1987. This paper looks at the concept of biodiversity offsets (and environmental compensation generally) both in New Zealand and internationally, and considers how lessons learned overseas may be adapted for this country. In New Zealand the practice of biodiversity offsets and environmental compensation is ad hoc and variable. The challenge with biodiversity offsets is to establish a transparent and coherent means of identifying the overall priorities and objectives of adopting such an approach, as well as how the relevant values are measured and protected. Establishing a methodology for quantifying biodiversity value, and the need for clear policy guidelines on biodiversity offsets are identified as key areas in need of wider discussion.

A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

Nowadays, technology has improved to extract dimensional stone blocks at quarry sites and also to process these at processing plants for making slabs and tiles. In the process of quarrying and processing, performance evaluation of machinery is very important to achieve optimum output at minimum cost with improved technology. Cost analysis of improved technology includes parameters such as manpower, energy consumption, tool consumption, depreciation, maintenance and also others. The chainsaw machine with long boom and rail in marble quarries and multi-diamond wire saw machine for slab making from granite blocks at processing plants have recently been introduced in India. Thus, a study was carried out under a research project on these machines to assess their suitability. In this paper, performance evaluation and cost analysis of chainsaw and multi-diamond wire saw have been carried out with existing machines on the basis of research findings.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses pH, redox potential, and oxygen concentrations, which were all measured continuously.Two plants operated at natural pH in slightly acid circuit and one at natural pH in alkaline circuit, and pH was stable at all these plants. In two plants varying amounts of cement fill were present in mill feed and pHwas variable. At the other plant pH was controlled with soda ash and lime.Redox potentials became more positive as the pulp passed through the plant. The minimum change was 20 mV and the maximum about 250 mV. Potentials tended to be variable at any point early in the circuit, but were more stable later on. In some plants reagent additions had no noticeable effect on redox potentials. However in the two plants operating in acid circuit the redox potential of .zinc rougher feed was markedly affected by changes in copper sulphate addition rate. Sodium sulphite additions had an effect at other plants.Oxygen concentrations in grinding circuits tended to be low (30 per cent of saturation) and very variable. Flotation was usually conducted in pulps at least 90 per cent saturated with oxygen. Addition of sodium sulphite had a marked effect on oxygen content in one plant, but less effect in two others.Statistically significant relationships were found in some plants between pH and redox potential, redox potential and oxygen saturation, and oxygen saturation and pH.Improved control of copper sulphate and sodium sulphite additions could result from applications of this work.

WHEN mining and treatment first started at Broken Hill only oxidised ores were available. These ores were rich in silver and lead-the silver mainly existing as chloride and the lead as carbonate.Treatment processes aimed mainly at the recovery of silver, lead being regarded as a by-product, and its recovery, except in so far as it affected silver recovery, was of minor importance.The first ore mined was carted to Terowie and thence railed to Melbourne, being smelted by the Intercolonial Smelting and Refining Co., of Spotswood.The first parcel (50 tons) returned £7442, or £148 16s. per ton to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company.The second parcel of 1053 tons, smelted at the Day Dream smelter, returned 132,142 oz. of silver, but no record is available as to its lead content.These results obtained from two parcels showed that by smelting the ore a handsome profit could be obtained, and Mr. La Monte was engaged to erect two 30-ton Nevada water jacket blast furnaces on Block 13. The Central Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina , contain two contiguous terranes which were accreted to Gondwanaland between the end of the Devonian and the end of the Triassic. These terranes, Arequipa in the north, and Chilenia in the south, differ from each other in the timing and style of their metallogenic development. However, they contain over 90% of the Central Andean porphyry copper resource. The copper porphyries in the Arequipa terrane are Paleocene to lower Oligocene in age, whereas the Chilenia deposits are mid-upper Cretaceous and mid-upper Miocene. Porphyry copper deposits occur outside these terranes, but are all Miocene in age. Miocene porphyry-style mineralisation also exists in the Arequipa terrane, but is copper-deficient and gold-rich. The accreted terranes may have favoured porphyry and other styles of copper mineralisation because they possessed relatively thin continental crust compared to adjacent parts of the Andes. Crustal thickening which commenced at about 30 Ma in the Arequipa terrane coincided with a major change to polymetallic, precious metal mineralisation which commonly displays high sulfidation characteristics.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

In salar-type deposits, lithium grades can be measured by bailers introduced at different elevations in the drill holes at locations where, later, the brine will be pumped out to recover the metal. When they are duplicated, these a priori rudimentary measurements may show large differences without indicating whether this is due to the procedure itself or to some physical causes linked to the dynamic behaviour of the salar (seasonality, rainfall, underground flow etc). In the reservoir presented in the paper, the problem is complicated by the double lack of stationarity of the lithium grades: the grades not only increase importantly with the depth but at the same time their fluctuations decrease, making it necessary to use non-stationary geostatistical techniques to simulate them. Reservoir simulation is developed in two steps: first, geostatistical simulations of the lithium grade create possible realisations of the reservoir; then, each geostatistical simulation is followed by a pumping simulation that calculates, at each drill hole of a given extraction scenario, the lithium produced each year over 40 years. For the set of 100 simulations produced in this way, a scenario reduction is made to choose the five most representative simulations where more complex calculations will be carried out (for example, changing hydrogeological parameters such as porosity and permeability, or the elevation of the filters, the number and the location of the pumping and the reinjection drill holes etc). The paper first presents an analysis of the geostatistical model sensitivity to the grade uncertainty when measured by bailer. Among the 100 measurements at our disposal covering the future production domain, 50 per cent are duplicates measured at the same place but at different times. They are randomly sampled to produce five subsets of 75 values, which will constitute the future 3D conditioning points for the geostatistical analysis and the simulations. For each subset, trend, standard deviation and variogram models are fitted, leading to five sets of 20 geostatistical simulations of grades. In this way, the reliability of the different parameters involved in the procedure is evaluated, as well as its impact on the pumping results. Then, a reconciliation study is conducted between the non-stationary nugget effects encountered in the 3D variograms of the lithium grade and a pure statistical analysis of 25 duplicates measured at different locations and/or different times. The result is that if the nugget effect reaches 20 per cent, which is the case of three conditioning subsets out of five, the reconciliation is good and the nugget effect of the variogram model represents the bailer uncertainty, ie the measurement error. Since the geostatistical simulation incorporates a nugget effect, it handles the bailer uncertainty and the impact on the produced metal is included in the evaluation. The final conclusion is that, after the hydrogeological pumping simulations, the initial differences between the five geostatistical models do not influence the final results: lithium grades measured by bailers can lead to a robust evaluation of the extractable resources, a conclusion that conflicts with conventional wisdom.CITATION:Séguret, S A, Goblet, P, Cordier, E and Galli, A, 2017. This article attempts to outline essential features of the Mount Isa ore deposit, to reveal the agencies thought to be responsible for its localization, and to describe methods used for obtaining and applying geological data on a commercial basis. Structural features are emphasized because they have proved the most useful agencies to date in searching for ore. Vertical depth, horizontal width and stratigraphic thickness are used throughout the article, and quantities are quoted in long tons.THE DEPOSITA width of more than two miles of evenly bedded shale of the Mount Isa series (upper pre-Cambrian) lies sandwiched conformably between quartzites. The series strikes N.S. and dips approximately 60° W. Shale is unaltered...Important geological work has been carried out by the Queensland Geological Survey, chiefly by Mr. S. R. L. Shepherd, in co-operation with the Geological Department of Mount Isa Mines Limited. In common with general experience in the iron-making industry overseas, Australia has in recent years suffered a deterioration in the physical quality of her iron ores in their suitability as a direct blast furnace feed. The increasing amounts of fines and the more friable nature of lump ore, especially in the ore from the Cockatoo Island deposits in Yampi Sound, Western Australia, have focused attention on problems of ore preparation and agglomeration, particularly sintering.Although very small pilot scale Dwight-Lloyd type sinter machines were operated at the steel-making centres at Newcastle and Port Kembla during World War II, no sizeable capacity was installed, so that ore was charged to the blast furnaces almost entirely unscreened, and the resultant flue dust was stockpiled.Towards the close of the war, the pilot plant at Newcastle was replaced by a small machine, adjacent to the flue dust stockpile, with a rated capacity of some 20 tons per hour. After approximately five months of part-time operation, this plant was closed down in January, 1945. Production was not resumed until December, 1950, when, due to a temporary ore shortage, it was decided to supplement available ore with sinter produced from the large flue dust stocks of about 300,000 tons. In spite of mechanical and process difficulties, inherent to the design of the plant, operation was continued on a two-shift basis, with several shutdowns for extensive overhaul and plant alterations, until September, 1954, when production was put on a three-shift basis. Addition of Yampi ore fines to the sinter machine burden was not commenced...

TIMBER supports for large underground cavities are temporary expedients until the permanent filling can be put in. Nevertheless, timber supports are very necessary in some form. The general problem is to support the cavity in all directions withthe minimum of timber, disposed in the strongest way. The simplest way of filling an irregular space with timber sets is to form triangles.The right-angled isosceles triangle (Fig. 1) leads to the true square set, in which caps are equal to struts. The right-angled unequal-sided triangle and the scalene isosceles triangle (Fig. 2) lead to the oblong square set, where caps are longer than struts.The scalene triangle (Fig. 4) leads to the rhombic or oblique set. The equilateral triangle leads to the hexagon set (Fig. 3), in which the caps and struts are all equal. These five plane figures, the triangle, square, rectangle, rhomb and hexagon, are the only figures that will completely fill any irregular plane figure, without interstices. Hexagon sets were first suggested by the writer in 1902 to a mine manager at Broken Hill, who did not see his way to use them.
