An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.

In mining operations, the removal of overburden to expose the ores is achieved by rock blasting using ammonium nitrate based explosives, eg ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures, commonly known as ANFO. However, ammonium nitrate can react with pyritic shales that are often found in many mines, leading to premature detonation or spontaneous explosion. In order to minimise the occurrence of spontaneous explosion, the reactivity of the shale in a mine must be assessed. This will provide a better understanding of blasting risks and thus will improve the safety and the cost efficiency of blasting through the selection of appropriate explosives. In this study, shale samples were collected from different locations in Western AustraliaÆs Mt Whaleback iron ore mine and geochemically characterised. The reactivity of the shale samples towards ammonium nitrate and ANFO was investigated using a combination of large-scale firing range tests and laboratory isothermal reactor tests. Results of the firing range tests show that the reactive ingredients of the shale are the limiting factor for the reactions between shale and ANFO. Based on the firing range test results, further isothermal reactor tests were conducted to investigate the reactivity of shale samples towards ammonium nitrate under controlled conditions. Analysis of the results from the firing range tests and the isothermal reactor tests shows that there are correlations between the reactivity of shale samples and several geochemical characteristics such as sulfate, sulfur, ferrous and zinc content.

Grade control plays an essential role in the good running of a mine. The factors at play are many, starting from a good analysis of the geology and a correct sampling procedure. Once this is achieved (and it is an essential prerequisite), the problem is to adequately define what is ore and what is waste. This paper tries to show, through a small example, how simple geostatistical techniques (variography, and moving average or kriging), can help in accurately defining these limits in a geologically homogeneous zone, thus allowing optimal use of the available information.

Efforts to stabilize international markets in commodities have gradually intensified during the course of this century in keeping with the grow- ing complexity and interdependence of the world economy and the increasing involvement of government in economic activity. Successive Australian Governments have con- sistently supported the concept of commodity agreements and arrangements in an effort to lessen short term fluctuations in price and to moderate the boom/bust conditions which tend to charac- terize production and trade in many commodities. The objective is to stabilize price at a level which equates supply and demand over the life of the arrangement. Such action involves a degree of market inter- vention and government involvement in the inter- national trade in the commodity concerned; the acceptability and desire to foster such arrange- ments varies from country to country depending upon attitudes to market intervention and man- agement. However attitudes, even among those opposing commodity agreements, have under- gone a major reversal in this century. Before the first world war, such intervention as existed almost entirely involved the physical producers. There was almost no government involvement and at that level most regarded commodity agree- ments as neither desirable nor practical. However government regulation of such activities as pro- duction and marketing of food during World War I, coupled with post-war shortages, followed by overproduction and the crash in prices during the Great Depression, stimulated producer gov- ernment interest in commodity market regulation. Consumer governments took a little longer and with a few exceptions, it was not until the post World War II period, that the fear of shortages of basic commodities brought some consumer countries to accept the concept.

This paper reviews the role of fill in mining including consolidated fill both histor- ically and currently as determined by a recent survey of the Fill Subcommittee of the Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics (CACRM). It covers the application of fill in modern min- ing methods including mechanized cut and fill, undercut and fill, post pillar cut and fill and longhole pillar recovery between stabilized fill. An automated fill preparation plant and recent developments in rotary drilling of hydraulic fill conducting holes are described briefly. The paper also summarizes the findings of some of the important laboratory and field work carried out on the behaviour of fill in Canada, the United States and Australia and again draws on current information obtained from the Fill Subcommittee of the CACRM. Space limitations and unavailability of suitable material prohi- bit the summary of similar information from other countries.

This paper reviews the chemistry of flotation pulps with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the effect of chemical environment in flotation and ap- plying the knowledge to improving the con- trol of reagent additions. Theories of flotation are considered briefly, but they are only of limited help in specifying an appropriate chemical environment and in establishing control techniques. The chemical nature of flotation pulps is reviewed. Four distinct phases are present - solids, an aqueous liquor con- taining many dissolved reactive sub- stances, organic liquids, and gases. All of these vary in many ways and interact with each other. It has now been estab- lished that there are many previously- unsuspected materials present in plant pulps that can or might affect flotation. Concentration profiles of selected para- meters in operating plants are given to show some typical changes that occur. Recent advances in collector chemistry, especially that of xanthate and related species, are reviewed. Modes of decompo- sition and/or formation in pulps of xan- thate, dixanthogen, perxanthate, xanthyl thiosulphate, and monothiocarbonate are reviewed, and their W absorption spectra are compared. Some relevant information on dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothia- zole, and thionocarbamate is summarized, and some speculative comments are made about reactions of these collectors.

The choice between drill and blast and mechanical boring methods is often not obvious. There are several factors which may have a de- cisive influence on this choice, such as the geometry and length of the tunnel, site con- ditions and borability of the rock. Both the un- confined compression strength and the joint dis- tance have a considerable influence on the net penetration rate. Site conditions, rock quality and water conditions influence the utilization of the tunnel boring machine. The drill and blast method is normally less sensitive to devi- ations from assumed ground conditions.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognized within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralization is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralization yield a wide range of homogenization temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250-300¦C and 350-400¦C respectively. S30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralization range from -0.1 to -0.4%o. The mineralization at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

Discovered in 1991 by combined plume detection and bottom-tow photography (Binns and Scott, 1993) and for some years thereafter the highest tenor mineral occurrence known on the ocean floor, the PACMANUS hydrothermal field has since been surveyed and sampled in great detail by CSIRO and international research agencies (Binns et al, 1995; Auzende, Urabe and Scientific Party, 1996; Binns et al, 2002; Tivey et al, 2006). Since 2005 commercial surveys employing deep-tow geophysical packages and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) have been conducted by Nautilus Minerals Inc and partners within Papua New Guinea-granted offshore exploration licenses (Nautilus Minerals Inc, 2008). Two academic drilling programs have been conducted, one under the international Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) directed at deep structure (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2002; Binns, Barriga and Miller, 2007), and one using a 5 m capable seafloor diamond drill to investigate the immediate subsurface at one site (Petersen et al, 2005). The highland region of Papua-New Guinea is relatively rugged terrain where stream gradients are steep. In areas where porphyry copper deposits outcrop the streams commonly expose primary sulphide mineralization in unoxidized rocks. Stream sediment geochemistry combined with float examination and broad geological mapping proved to be an effective tool for detection of outcropping bodies of mineralization. After discovery, detailed stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and rock chip sampling, together with detailed geological mapping proved adequate to delineate drilling targets. Reconnaissance stream sediment sample density was dictated by geology and access and a density of one sample per 25 Km2, or less, was desirable to ensure a high degree of confidence in the programme. Research indicated that the base metals occur in sulphide form in stream sediment and that the -80 mesh size fraction gave the most reliable results. Electron paramagnetic resonance provides a fast method to characterise quartz. Quartz from veins associated with the Cambrian massive sulphide deposits in the Mt Read Volcanics of western Tasmania and from Devonian reefs associated with gold mineralisa- tion at various localities in Tasmania exhibit specific EPR patterns, different from quartz from common veins. The intensity of the EPR spectra of the quartz can be used as a statistical guide to gold mineralisation at Beaconsfield.

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. The stack-gas scubber effluent from base metal smelters often contain 20-100 ppm of oxidized selenium salts. Due to their toxicity, these must be removed from solution prior to release of the effluent to the environment. Many species of microorganisms including Corynebacterium diotheriae, Neurospora crassa, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli and various species of Salmonella are capable of assimilating oxidized selenium and reducing it intracellularly to red amorphous selenium. CANMET in cooperation with several companies has developed a biological process to recover selenium from dilute solutions. The laboratory, mini-pilot plant and the large industrial pilot- plant studies leading to the development of this process will be described.

In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.

At Tamano Smelter, part of the furnace settler is electrically heated by electrodes placed internally. This practice provides good control of the settler conditions. The authors have been investigating improvements in furnace operations, especially to decrease the copper content in the slag discarded from the settler. The important operational points on the control of magnetite in liquid matte and slag are discussed on the basis of the thermodynamic calculation method developed by Prof. S. Goto. The behaviour of magnetite in the practical furnace has been studied by using a torsion magnetometer and a solid electrolyte oxygen-sensing cell.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.
