The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

The future challenges in mining instrumentation, mainly on future intelligent mines, are to continue providing instruments with the highest level of reliability at the lowest possible cost, and also to take advantage of technology existing in other industries and to adapt it to the mining context. New wireless instruments (smart sensors, smart actuators, smart controllers) would also be very useful, as well as instruments fully adapted to the monitoring of large movements that are observed, in both underground and open pit mines. Mining instrumentation is found to various degrees in most mines, both open pit and underground. Smart mining instruments present a certain number of aspects specific to the environment in which the instruments are installed. Namely, the instruments can be installed either for short-term or long-term purposes. The mining industry is always looking for useful instruments that can provide relevant information on ground behaviour adjacent to mining stopes or permanent infrastructure. The instruments must meet the various criteria, and must also evolve with the new mining technologies that are continuously being implemented. A strong collaboration between the mining industry, research organisations, and instrument manufacturers is the key to meeting these objectives. This contribution describes the current trends on smart sensors and smart instrumentation with Wireless LAN support.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

The automatic control of grinding mills for optimum performance is an area of control which can benefit from new control concepts and technology. Economic pressures dictate that the mining industry undertake changes in process design, control system strategy and operations organisation that call for innovative reappraisals of the control system performance necessary to enhance the functions of the process operator. As more dependence is placed on instrumentation the chances of abrupt, total loss of process control through an entire production complex becomes a major concern of the plant manager.

DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. Resource rent tax is a form of taxation or royalty, which only become effective at such a time as a pre-determined rate of return has been achieved by an operation. The offshore petroleum industry in Australia is already subject to RRT as is the Roxby Downs (Olympic Dam) Mine in South Australia. Both the mining and petroleum taxation regimes in Papua New Guinea include a resource rent tax component called Additional Profits Tax (APT). The implications of the current form of Additional Profits Tax for shareholder cash returns are that the tax burden on the operation may suddenly increase at some stage in the life of the mine, if and when the threshold level of profitability for the tax to be triggered is exceeded. From that point in time onwards the cash return to the shareholders on the capital invested is greatly diminished. For mining companies in Papua New Guinea, the effective tax rate increases from 35% to 57.75% as a result of the onset of Additional Profits Tax. This tax rate penalty is so severe that there appears to be merit in considering the concept of managing profitability through time rather than purely maximising annual pre-tax profits as is currently the case in most mining operations. This would have the benefit of deferring or perhaps preventing altogether the onset of the tax. One possible method for the effective management of profitability is through the control of average mining grade by cutoff grade manipulation. Traditional cutoff grade theory has usually considered taxation as a direct cost at a fixed or variable percentage of annual profits. As a result of this most analyses are conducted on a pre-tax basis. If tax is included in analyses it is usually present as a time independent function of gross profit. Additional Profits Tax is both time and rate of return dependent and therefore not adequately accommodated by currently accepted cutoff grade theory. A review has been made of the effects of resource rent taxes on both the investment decision-making process as well as possible development and mining strategies which may be employed by mining companies faced with Additional Profits Tax. The review includes examples based on the structure of Additional Profits Tax which is levied in Papua New Guinea.

During the late-1980s crawler-mounted crusher units established their position in the aggregates industry. Between 1986 and 1994 about 700 units were delivered to customers all over the world for surface operations, mainly in Scandinavia and central Europe. The crawler-mounted units are popular among smaller crushing operators because they are versatile and easy to move between sites. In large quarries the greatest benefit is obtained by combining a primary crawler-mounted crusher unit with mobile belt conveyors which eliminates the need for costly haulage by dump truck. Savings of up to 40 per cent in production costs prior to secondary crushing have been achieved. Today the environmental aspect in quarrying is assuming ever greater importance. Besides being costly the dump trucks are also the major source of dust and exhaust fumes within a quarry. A complete face crushing system consisting of a crawler-mounted crusher unit and mobile belt conveyors can be electrically driven and can be equipped with dust encapsulation and dust collectors. A mobile crushing unit is not a new idea. From the mid-1950s onwards the mobile and self-propelled units have been built equipped with crawlers, tyres or walking mechanisms, with weights usually of 500-1000 t. Due to their massive size these unit are not mobile in the same way as the today's mobile units. It is not feasible to move them more than a few times a year unlike today's fully mobile units which are often relocated once an hour. This means that the massive units can not continuously follow the production face and their loading always requires a certain amount of haulage. Today the mining industry is facing new challenges. With low mineral prices and high labour costs, increasing productivity is essential for survival. New standards are also being set for the labour safety and the environment. Large research programs have been launched to meet these challenges. However, technology which can partly solve these problems already exist and is only waiting to be introduced into underground applications as well - the mobile crushing unit followed by belt conveying. As in surface operations the elimination of truck haulage also brings considerable savings in operating costs in underground mines and reduces the amount of dust and exhaust gases generated. An additional benefit especially in underground applications is improved safety. In an underground mine most accidents are caused by moving vehicles.

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.

Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

The primary mine planning focus during early study phases of future mining projects is Life of Asset ore production and grade quality, this will always be the situation. While waste schedule optimisation is generally considered in the latter study phases nearing execution for a limited number of schedule periods only and not a true optimisation considering all attributes such as waste destination location, design, cycle time and closure. This can be particularly applicable in large multi-pit bulk mining operations where one approach to meet Life of Asset ore tonnes and grade targets has been to maintain pit development flexibility resulting in large open pit areas and substantial expit Overburden Storage Area (OSA). Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. The geographic imperative of ore systems leaves mining, more so than virtually any other aspect of modern industry, heavily dependent on obtaining and maintaining social licence to operate. A prospective miner cannot arbitrarily walk away from a deposit in search of more favourable community perceptions – concentrations of mineral endowment represent highly specific and fixed elements of the landscape, and their development and extraction thus requires the acceptance and trust of a specific network of landholders and stakeholders, sometimes with diverse and even competing interests in the development and use of the local environment. Weakness or absence of such social licence can bring added costs and complexity to developing and operating a mine – and in extreme cases even result in project failure. Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. Over the past 5 years, Bougainville Copper Limited has undertaken a number of major plant expansions to the copper concen- trate production plant at Bougainville in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. These projects have scheduled three additional ball mills, three new banks of Outokumpu flotation cells, four additional tertiary screens, two additional tertiary crushers, and more recently four high capacity 24.5m dia. tailing thickeners. The value of the five separate projects totalled more than A$100 million. A requirement of commissioning and bringing on line of each of these projects has been to minimise both operational losses and copper concentrate production. The commissioning has been successfully implemented by detailed planning of the commissioning work in conjunction with the plant operation. Planning has been detailed for each man involved on an hourly basis, highlighting the work required on each commissioning task that is to be undertaken and the time expected to achieve activity Completion.
