For his achievement in building the Panama Canal, Major-Gen. George W. Goethals was presented, on May 22, the John Fritz medal, the highest mark of distinction in the engineering profession. In the absence, in Europe, of Clemens Herschel, chairman of the Board of Award, Charles F. Rand presided over the meeting. Col. John J. Carty, who was chairman of the Board of Award at the time the medal was awarded to Gen. Goethals, and who ordinarily would have presented the medal, was detained in Paris by Government work, so the presentation was made by Ambrose Swasey. When calling the assembly to order, the Chairman said: This medal has been awarded by a Board representing four of the National Engineering Societies: American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The medal was established in 1902, in honor of that great American engineer, John Fritz, and has never been awarded except to very distinguished men. In. 1902, the first award was made to John Fritz for scientific and industrial achievement. In 1905, to Lord Kelvin for his work in cable telegraphy and other scientific attainments. In 1906, to George Westinghouse for the invention and development of the air brake. In 1907, to Alexander Graham Bell for the invention and introduction of the telephone. In 1908, to Thomas A. Edison for the invention of the duplex and quadruplex telegraph, the phonograph, the development of a commercially practical incandescent lamp, the development of a complete system of electric lighting, including dynamos, regulating devices, underground system protective devices and meters. In 1909, to Charles T. Porter for his work in advancing the knowledge of steam engineering and in improvements in engine construction. In 1910, to Alfred Noble for notable achievements as a civil engineer. In 1911, to Sir William H. White for notable achievements in naval architecture. In 1912, to Robert W. Hunt for his contributions to the early development of the Bessemer process. In 1914, to Professor John E. Sweet for his achievements in machine design. In 1915, to Dr. James Douglas for notable achievement in mining, metallurgy, education, and industrial welfare. In 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson for achievement in electrical invention, in electrical engineering and industrial development, and in scientific research. In. 1917, to Dr. Henry M. Howe for his investigations in metallurgy, especially in the metallography of iron and steel. In 1918, to J. The boundaries of the oil region in Pennsylvania and New York, as determined by the drill, embrace a much larger extent of territory than is generally supposed, being nearly 200 miles in length from north to south, with an average width of 25 miles, covering an area, within somewhat irregular lines, of about 4250 square miles. After twenty years of development we find these lines practically the same as those laid down by McClure in his geological map of the United States, published in 1817, and denominated and colored by him as the "line of salt," which was found in quantity long before petroleum. The eastern line of the entire oil region lies in a northeast and southwest direction, parallel to and some distance west of the Allegheny Mountains; the south line is substantially one drawn between the western boundary of Butler County and the town of Kittanning in Armstrong County; the west line passes just outside of Butler County, cutting off a small corner of Mercer, west of the towns of Franklin, Titusville, and Warren, into New York State, where it rounds off the end of this long strip in the counties of Allegheny and Cattarangus, and joins the eastern line, near Olean, New York, north of the city of Bradford. The eastern line, starting from Kittanning, passes through the northeast corner of Clarion County, the southeast corner of Warren, cutting Forest County through the centre, and reaching the beforementioned extreme northeastern developments near Olean. These lines have been taken broadly to include all territory that could ever possibly come into the question as oil-producing. These lines having been proved by the drill may be considered

Y.-Mr. Tillson's paper on hammer drills is of much interest to me. Early in 1909 I was invited to make tests of our drills at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. The first drill that we tested gave very poor results. This was a drill having a hammer piston 1¾ in. in diameter and 3 ¼ -in. stroke, the hammer piston weighing about 6 1b., the 1 ¾ in. diameter being exposed to pressure at either end. Although this drill has given excellent results as a sinking drill, its performance as a stoping drill was poor. This was one of the surprises of the limestone as spoken of by Mr. Tillson. This led me to further investigation, and a second drill was developed, with a much lighter piston and a somewhat longer stroke, that gave better results. In the design of this drill, no attention was paid to the cost of construction, our whole attention being given to the increase in drilling speed and reduction of the quantity of air used. The first drill of this type had a piston weighing about 2 ½ lb. and a stroke of 3 ¼ in. The piston was made with a hammer-bar extension, and the cylinder was made with two diameters of the bore, one in which the hammer-bar extension moved and the larger one in which the piston head moved. Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Transportation facilities are thus excellent. The slate deposits of these three counties are conspicuously unified, both economically and geologically. In general type of marketable

The glass industry is a major user of many industrial minerals in the manufacture of its product. It is the intent of this chapter to: (1) acquaint the reader with the glass industry by including a few production statistics, and (2) cover the various aspects of the major raw materials used to make glass. The matter of glass compositions, properties, and batches is considered beyond the scope of this chapter which deals only with raw materials. For more details on the particular minerals and rocks used in glassmaking, the reader is referred to chapters in the commodity section of this book. Glass Industry Statistics Glass manufacture in the United States can be divided into three major product classifications as follows: 1) Glass containers 2) Pressed and blown glass 3) Flat glass Glass containers include bottles and jars for the packaging of food and beverages, as well as drugs, chemicals, and cosmetics. Pressed and blown glass includes table, kitchen, art and novelty ware, lighting and electronic glassware, and fiber glass. Flat glass covers sheet or window glass, plate, laminated, and safety glass. The US Department of Commerce statistics, as recorded in the 1977 Census of Manufacturers, compares the dollar value of glass shipments for each product category. These statistics are shown in Table 1 (Anon., 1980) and are self-explanatory. A comparison of the tonnage output in each product classification is difficult, as production data is reported in "gross" for glass containers, "pounds" for fiber glass, "pieces" for glassware, [ ] and "square feet" for flat glass. In the case of glass containers, an average "pounds per gross" factor can be applied to the total production figures reported in thousands of gross in Bureau of Census industrial reports. Table 2 presents the calculated annual production tonnage for glass containers for the years 1974-1979. Except for 1979, there was a yearly increase in production. The tonnage figures of Table 2 are further influenced by decreasing weight per gross which has occurred in the glass container industry since 1975. This reflects the gradual shift to lighter weight containers for beverages. Other segments of the glass industry have experienced growth, but the figures in tons are not published information. Fiber glass growth has been influenced by the heavy demand for insulation as part of energy conservation efforts on a national basis. The production of flat glass by the float process has continued to grow with several new plants entering production. All portions of the glass industry experienced the effects of the general economic decline of 1979-1980, but the outlook for the future is bright. THE twenty-first birthday of the Rocky Mountain Club will be celebrated on April 11 by the Last Round-up; for, as announced at the annual meet-ing of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in February, the Club and the Institute have voted to con-solidate and formal approval by the court alone re-mains to be secured. The Rocky Mountain Club was organized some years since "to create and maintain good fellowship between the Rocky Mountain members and to further the in-terests of the Rocky Mountain States." From the first, mining men dominated it, as was natural in view of the prominence of mining in the Rocky Mountain region. A series of brilliant annual dinners were held and a site purchased for a clubhouse. A fund was raised to provide a home for the Club. Just as success was as-sured the war came and the members of the Club con-sidered it would be unpatriotic to spend money for such purpose at that time. In a spirit of patriotism the Club funds were devoted to war purposes, especially the Commission for Relief in Belgium and the caring for soldiers going to and returning from the front. So much of the money was used that at the end of the war the project for a clubhouse was out of the question with-out raising a new fund, and since 1923, the Club has been inactive. There is now in its treasury a substan-tial sum. The assets are for the most part the result of contributions made by W. B. Thompson, John Hays Hammond, and Edward H. Clark, all members of the Institute and all of whom wished to see these funds applied in a manner to leave some lasting memorial of the spirit which animated the founders and at the same time perform some useful function in the development of the region in which the Club's interest centered. It was thought that this could best be done through affilia-tion of the Club with the Institute and both organiza-tions have voted for the merger. The Club members not already in the Institute are to have the privilege of a special Rocky Mountain life membership, and the property of the Club is to be used to endow a Rocky Mountain Club fund to be used for purposes in accord with those of both the Institute and the Club and with especial reference to benefiting the Rocky Mountain region.

IN a previous article' the authors outlined a study of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam .opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report' were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated. Data from the second series are recorded in Table I. Listed in the first three columns are the independent variables of feed rate (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 1b per hr), mill speed (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of critical), and pulp density (50, 60, 70, and 80 pct). The dependent variables, Pso, P100, reduction ratio, slope of the log-log sieve analysis curve, power demand, and Bond work index follow. Of these, only the reduction ratio and the Bond work index were analyzed for significance. Production of new surface as calculated from sieve analyses has not been included for this series because of the questionable assumptions that have to be made to satisfy the formulas involved. The large number of products obtained during the runs precluded the use of surface measurement techniques by the gas adsorption methods at this time; however, samples of all products have been stored for future reference. To test the consistency of the reporting of the sieved products, an averaged sieve analysis was calculated from the wet-dry plots obtained from the three product samples of each run. The resulting averaged analysis was plotted and the P80, selected. The relative deviations of the P80's from each of the three product samples with respect to the P80 of the averaged analysis were then calculated. In only two sets were the relative deviations (6.2 and 9.9 pct) considered excessive. In each of these two sets, one sieve analysis was obviously out of line; hence that analysis was ignored and new averages were computed. This reduced the relative deviations to 1.2 and 2.7 pct respectively. The relative deviations of the product analyses with respect to their averages ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 pct at 1000 lb per hr, 0.0 to 1.1 pct at 2000 lb per hr, 0.2 to 3.0 pct at 3000 lb per hr, 0.3 to 4.3 pct at 4000 lb per hr, and 0.5 to 5.2 pct at 5000 lb per hr. The relative deviation of the 80 pct passing point for 96 dry sieve analyses of the feed with respect to that of the averaged analysis was 7.6 pct. This slightly higher percentage can probably be attributed to a greater proportion of tramp oversize in a crusher product than is ordinarily found in a rod mill product. The last column on Table I lists the adjusted work index, which has been used as the measure of efficiency for the various combinations of operating conditions investigated. Efficiency increases as the index becomes lower. It was reported in the previous paper that the work indexes for the Waukesha limestone used in these experiments decreased as the product size decreased (as calculated from Bond grindabilities). That is, this limestone becomes easier to grind as the material becomes finer. This is unusual, because the work index for most materials as calculated from the Bond grindability has remained constant as the product size decreased or has increased slightly. Table II lists the results of Bond grindability tests at all mesh sizes from 3 to 200 and the work indexes calculated from them. To remove this variation of work index with product size from the data so that results would apply to any material of constant work index, the work index values shown in Table II were plotted against product size on log-log paper. From this curve (a straight line function in this case), the expected work index for the product size for each of the runs of the experiment was obtained. The work indexes as calculated from the reduction ratio and energy consumption were then divided by the corresponding expected work index. The results obtained are reported in percentages on Table I as adjusted work index and are actually percentages of the work index for the Waukesha limestone at the size in question. Multiplication of the work index value for a material of constant index by these percentages should allow the application of the adjusted work index curves to the material. Only the adjusted work index values, not the actual experimental values, were used for the variance analyses and for the graphs.

A study uras made on the creep behavior of cast and extruded SR grade beryllium. It is shown that, for stresses below about 1000 psi in the temperature range 760" to 85o° c, the creep behatior is nearly exactly described by the Nabarro-Herring mechanism. The activation energy is apparently that for self-diffusion, 42 2 kcal per mole, below 1000 psi, but it rises to 88.6' kcal per mole at higher stresses. The slress exponent is 4.5 at the higher stresses. Tertiary creep in this material is clearly related to void formation apparently caused by grain boundary sliding. BERYLLIUM is becoming an increasingly important technological material. A search of the literature has revealed a lack of fundamental studies on the creep of beryllium. This investigation was therefore undertaken to gain insight into the creep behavior of this material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile creep samples were prepared from cast and extruded SR grade beryllium. The vendor's chemical analysis of the beryllium tested is shown in Table I. The test specimens were machined as shown in Fig. 1 from i -in.-diam rods. The machined creep specimens were annealed to remove surface damage and to establish a variation in grain size. The heat treatments and their resulting grain diameters are shown in Table 11. The average grain diameters were determined by the intercept method. True average grain diameters were estimated by multiplying the measured average grain diameters by 1.5.' The creep tests were performed at temperatures from 700" to 850°C in a vacuum of 105 Torr or better in a tantalum-element resistance furnace. Loads were applied by an Instron testing machine such that the stress was held constant to within 20 psi. The test temperature was measured by thermocouples on the sample. With one exception the deviation from the desired test temperature was 2"C, and in that case the deviation was 4"C. Elongations were measured by an extensometer within the vacuum chamber which was fastened to the creep specimens at the grooves in the grip ends, as shown in Fig. 1. The precision of measurement of elongation was 1 X loe4 in. The creep tests were begun only after thermal equilibrium had been established in the sample and the extensometer to insure that there was no strain rate component due to transient thermal effects. Two kinds of creep experiments were performed. First, at constant grain size, the effects of varying stress and temperature were studied. In the second set of experiments, the temperature was held constant and the grain size was varied. The activation energy for creep was determined by varying the temperature at constant stress, as described by orn, during the first set of experiments. The variable grain size experiments revealed that creep at low stress apparently occurred by the abarro-errin' mechanism. In all of the creep tests, the stress was held constant only until sufficient strain had occurred to accurately determine the creep rate. The stress was then raised to a new value and the new creep rate determined. This process was reported until tertiary creep occurred. In this manner several data points were obtained from each specimen. The assumption was made that the structure was not changing appreciably between the incremental stress levels. This was verified by reducing stresses to previously tested levels and comparing the creep rates with the creep rates obtained at the lower strains. The re-producibility was within experimental error over strains on the order of 1 pct. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A typical series of creep tests is shown in Fig. 2. Primary creep was not observed in any test. Transient creep, which we define as creep rates that are nonlinear with time, was not observed for any change in stress except where tertiary creep occurred. The absence of both primary and transient creep has been previously reported for hot-pressed powder beryllium.= The data for the creep behavior at constant grain size are summarized in Fig. 3. The data show two distinctly different stress dependencies. At stresses below about 1000 psi, in the equation:

Mineral dressing research showed that iron concentrates of commercial quality could be produced from the Pea Ridge deposit near Sullivan, Mo. Magnetic separation and flotation, on a laboratory scale, yielded concentrates ranging from 60.0 to 71.4 pet Fe at recoveries of 89.9 to 97.6 pct. Early in 1957 St. Joseph Lead Co. announced discovery of three new centers of iron ore deposition in east central Missouri.' The discovery resulted from exploratory drilling in the vicinity of a magnetic anomaly or high. A deep hole, drilled into the Pre-Cambrian porphyry to determine the cause of anomaly, penetrated a magnetite-rich deposit.' The magnetic surveys that revealed the anomalies were begun by the Missouri Geological Survey in 1929 and were continued into the 1930's.3 At that time an area in Crawford County known as the Bourbon magnetic high was located. A second anomaly, similar in size and intensity, was discovered about six miles to the northeast in Franklin County in the vicinity of Sullivan. This area was not studied in detail until the early 1940's. To determine the cause of the anomalies, the USBM drilled four holes at the Bourbon site in 1943-1944.4 The most productive hole penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 127.5 ft. These zones contained magnetite in rhyo-lite porphyry at depths between 1600 and 2000 ft. Additional iron ore below 2000 ft was considered a possibility at the time. Some years later, the USGS, Missouri Geological Survey, St. Joseph Lead Co., and others cooperated in sponsoring an aeromagnetic survey of the Bourbon-Sullivan area which resulted in discovery of a third high, about eight miles distant at Pea Ridge. This deposit, with an estimated reserve of 50 to 100 million tons of iron ore, is considered the main find, although other orebodies in the same general area are of definite interest.' When this discovery was announced, St. Joseph Lead also revealed plans to exploit the deposit jointly with Bethlehem Steel Co. A new corporation, Meramec Mining Co., was established, and 1962 was set as the target date for completing physical plant.2 Annual production goals of 2 million tons of beneficiated and pelletized iron ore were proposed. Preparation of the site for shaft sinking was begun in June 1957. Orebody and Character of Samples: Drilling to date has established the Pea Ridge orebody as a crescent-shaped pipe about 300 ft wide. Some drillholes were bottomed at 2800 ft in very good iron ore.6 he orebody is predominantly magnetite, although hematite and a mixture of hematite and magnetite occur in the upper areas and peripheral walls. Drillhole cores representing ore from different areas and depths of mineralization were grouped into composites for testing. These composites consisted of: 1) medium grade mixed hematite and magnetite, 2) high grade mixed hematite and magnetite, and 3) high grade magnetite. The medium grade ore came from three holes with depths of i350 to 1900 ft. The high grade mixed hematite and magnetite cores came from the 1790 to 2812-ft interval of one hole. Partial chemical analyses of the three samples, given in Table 1, reveal that all are excessively high in phosphorus and sulfur, and sample 1 is

The writer looked over the quarry with care in the search for fossils, having in mind shells or corals of fairly large size. In the brilliant summer sunshine, none were observed on the glaring white ledges. The impression was gained that none were present and the statement to this effect was made in the edition of this paper published in the Bulletin' of the Institute for February, 1915, p. 136. On closer examination in the laboratory it has been discovered that the limestone itself is made up of minute organisms, which are clearly revealed by microscopic examination of thin sections. The principal component of the rock is a small foraminifer, 0.1 to 0.3 in. (2.5 to 7 mm.), of the genus Orbitoides, presumably an Oligocenic form. Figs. 1 and 2. illustrate it. The accompanying description has been kindly summarized by Marjorie O'Connell, M. A., Curator in Paleontology in Columbia University, who first detected the evidences of organisms in the rock. Orbitoides kempi O'CONNELL N. SP.1 The foraminiferan which makes up the Seboruco limestone is an Orbitoides of a Species new to North America. The only Orbitoides heretofore described from this country is 0. mantelli from the lower Oligocenic of the Gulf States. This form from Cuba, then, so different in all of its characteristics from the 0. mantelli, is of great interest as perhaps forming a basis of correlation over wide areas. The most closely related Species is 0. dispansa Sowerby, which occurs in the Nummulite limestone of the Eocenic of the Bavarian . Alps, in the Priabona beds of the lower Oligocenic of Massano, and elsewhere in Italy, as described by Gümbel.2 The age of the limestone in Cuba would thus Seem to be of upper Eocenic or lower Oligocenic age, probably the latter. The fossil has the form of a sphere Surrounded by a wavy rim of horizontal extent, the whole resembling two flat-brimmed, round-crowned hats placed base to base. The total extent of the Shell ranges up to 7+ mm., while the thickness of the central sphere is 2.5 mm. in one of the largest individuals. Like all of the other Species of Orbitoides, this form begins with a Single layer of chambers which multiply in one plane and assume a circular outline; but it is in the subsequent growth that the distinguishing specific characters appear, for the chambers at the central portion of the shell increase more rapidly than do those near the periphery and in consequence a Swelling is produced which finally gives the Spherical form which is so characteristic. The rim, on the other hand, shows little chamber-increase and remains thin. This is clearly Shown in the sections figured, where the central row of larger chambers forms the equatorial zone. Radiating from this row, in section, there appear, a number of solid cones alternating with broad reticulated ones. The solid cones mark the more dense structure forming the walls surrounding the reticulated or chambered cones. These appear upon the Surface as distinct pits, whereas the solid part appears as raised walls.

The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian, to the major resources of umanium in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sediments. The results of preliminary studies in the southwestern. United States are summarized. Approximately 50% of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic age in the western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed1-1 (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Pre- cambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precam-brian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks.' Precambrian Geochronology of the Southwestern United States The Precambrian geochronology of the southwestern United States is in an early stage of systematic study. Until recently, the only basis of correlation was through inconclusive field relationships. However, with the increased use of isotopic age dating, new data are becoming available for correlating regional and local events. As yet, there is no undisputed evidence of ages greater than 1.8 billion years (by) old in the southwestern United States. However, most geologists who have studied the region agree that volcanism and marine sedimentation of predominately eugeosynclinal facies took place in a northeasterly trending geosyn-cline prior to 1.7 by."' Because of insufficient evidence for a pregeosynclinal continental crust, some researchers believe the geosyncline may have developed on oceanic crust.' However, sediments metamorphosed to 1.7 by-old felsic paragneisses in the Panamint Range, California," and southeastward into southern Nevada are believed to have had a nearby continental provenance. The three Precambrian disturbances that are recognized in the southwestern United States are 1.6 to 1.8 by, about 1.4 by, and about 1.1 by-old (Fig. 3). In addition to plutonism, these disturbances are characterized by predominately lower-grade metamorphism. In this report, lower-grade metamorphic rocks include argillite, phyllite, slate, mica schist, and gneiss with relic sedimentary textures. Higher-grade metamorphic rocks, in this report, are recrystallized beyond megascopic recognition of the original rock type. Principal

A new constitutional diagram is presented for the cobalt-rich end of the cobalt-titaniurn system. The modifications result from the presence of a new, intermediate, fcc phase, ?, the existence and homogeneity limits of which were established by metallo-graphic and X-ray studies of alloys containing from about 3 to 30 pct Ti. The precipitation of the ? phase from supersaturated solid solution was studied by hardness and electrical resistivity measzsrements, and two distinct stages in the process were observed. COBALT forms the base for a number of precipitation -hardenable alloy systems which may be divided into two distinct categories of practical interest, a) those hardened by intermetallic compounds and b) those hardened by carbide formation. The precipitation of intermetallic compounds from solid solution in cobalt-rich alloys has, however, received very little attention. Although the phase diagrams for some binary systems capable of precipitation have been determined,' there is an almost complete lack of data on the property changes associated with the precipitation, and even less information on the kinetics of the reactions or morphology of the products. More information is available on the precipitation of carbides because of the practical significance in superalloys. A survey of cobalt binary phase diagrams suggested that the cobalt-titanium alloys might provide interesting and useful precipitation-hardenable alloys. The equilibrium diagram as proposed by Wallbaum2 is shown in Fig. 1. Köster and wagner3 have indicated that the maximum solubility of titanium in cobalt is about 10 pct at the eutectic temperature (1135oC), and this decreases to about 7.2 pct at room temperature. The temperature of the allotropic transformation in cobalt is lowered by the addition of titanium, about 5 pct being sufficient to retain the high-temperature fcc modification to room temperature. Wallbaum and Witte 4,5 have indicated that the precipitating phase in alloys containing up to about 29 pct Ti is Co2Ti, a hexagonal Laves phase of the MgNi, type. With slightly higher titanium contents, they also report a cubic modification of Co2Ti of the MgCu2-type Laves phase. Duwez and Taylor6 confirmed the existence of the hexagonal (MgNi2) modification but not the cubic (MgCuz) modification of Co2Ti and suggested that existence of the cubic form may have resulted from impurities in Wallbaum's alloys. In their work on Laves-type phases, Elliott and Rostoker 7 reported the cubic modification of Co,Ti, but did not confirm the existence of the hexagonal modification. However, Dwight8 in a discussion of the work of Eliott and Rostoker again showed the existence of both modifications of Co2Ti, a result which was confirmed at that time by Elliott and Rostoker. As a result of a study on the iron-cobalt-titanium system, Köster and Gellers suggested the existence of a Co3Ti phase isomorphous with Fe3Ti. Witte and Wallbaum,' however, established the fact that no compound, Fe3Ti, exists in the iron-titanium system, and in a later publication, wallbaum2 stated that Kitster and Geller's reasoning was not valid, and no compound, Co3Ti, exists. El Indio, eighty percent -owned by Compania Minera an Jose Inc., a subsidiary of St. Joe Minerals, and twenty percent-owned by private Chilean investors, will open their new flotation and Carbon -In -Pulp plant near La Serena, 480 km (300 miles) north of Santiago, Chile, in early 1981. The underground mine, at an altitude of 4,270 m (14,000 ft), will produce about 1,270 mt per day (1,400 st per day) of ore containing about 2. 2570 Cu, and gold and silver to the extent of 16 and 254 g per mt (0.47 and 7.4 oz per st) respectively. While construction of the plant was underway, development ore, containing some 1,400 kg (45,000 oz) of gold, was shipped to the United States for recovery in a copper smelter. At El Indio the underground ore is rail-hauled to the mill a short distance from the portal where it is crushed, ground, and floated to produce a copper concentrate containing both gold and silver. The crushing plant also crushes waste for use as mine backfill. Approximately 92% of the copper and 60% of the gold and silver are recovered in the flotation concentrate. Flotation tailings, at a grade of 19 g Au and 116 g Ag per mt (3.4 oz Au and 0.55 oz Ag per st), are cyanided for 72 hours in six Pachucas with auxiliary air lifts for pulp transfer. Lime, cyanide, lead nitrate, and a phosphate are also fed to the cyanidation Pachucas. After cyanidation, the pulp is treated in four air lift Carbon-In-Pulp tanks equipped with external vibrating screens for carbon advance. Loaded carbon is stripped in two pressure vessels in parallel. Pressure stripping must be used because of the high altitude. Stripped carbon is dewatered in a spiral classifier before being reactivated in a rotary kiln and returned to the C. I. P. circuit. Pregnant solution is then sent to four banks of four Zadra cells for gold and silver recovery on steel wool. Zadra cell cathodes.are washed with the slimes being captured in a plate and frame filter. The filter cake and the washed cathodes are then dried on an infrared dryer and smelted in two stages to bullion bars. Published reports indicate that the total investment for this unique operation was in the neighborhood of $80 million.
