THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. A discussion of the paper published in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 20, March, 1908, pp. 227 to 237, and No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 615 to 620. PROF. HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Hibbard's definition of steel would be the best yet offered were it not for its one defect, the vagueness or equivocalness of "fusion-process." Puddling is surely in one sense a fusion-process, and so are the charcoal-hearth or knobbling-processes. But what he says suggests the following definition, which seems to me a good one: " Steel: any variety of iron which is usefully malleable at least at some one temperature, and is either cast when molten into a malleable mass, or if not so cast can be much hardened by sudden cooling." It is not necessary in a definition that quantitative bounds should be set up, for instance, that the exact height at which dwarf apple-trees cease and standards begin, or at which hills cease and mountains begin, should be stated. These quantitative measures are proper for specifications and contracts, but are not necessary for purposes such as the present. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J. Al3Ni whiskers were chemically extracted from unidirectionally solidified Al-A13Ni eutectic ingots, bent into loops, and heated for 0.1 to 10 hr at 320°, 415", and 510°C. The initial strains ranged from 0.003 to 0.055. In all cases, permanent plastic deformation was noted after heat treatment. The deformation consisted of relatively uniform bending at low stresses and temperatures and short times and kinking followed by fracture at high stresses and temperatures and long times. After kinking, the whisker segments adjacent to the kinks were found to have straightened, which is evidence of a dislocation condensation mechanism. The range of temperatures and strains at which time dependent plastic deformation was found indicates that creep of whiskers probably plays a role in the creep of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum. WHISKERS may be defined as nearly perfect single crystals which exhibit high strength. Because they can support high stresses at relatively low strains, they have been successfully employed in reinforcing metals at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In studying the creep behavior of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum at elevated temperatures,1,2 it was noted that the composites exhibited measurable creep deformation. This investigation of the creep relaxation of individual A13Ni whiskel, extracted chemically from the composite was initiated to determine if creep of whiskers could con. "bute to the overall creep of the composite material. Many observations of plastic deformation of metal and halide whiskers have been made. Brenner3-8 noted that copper, silver, and iron whiskers exhibited heterogeneous plastic deformation at room temperature when strained beyond their yield points. Gyulai9 and Gordon10 observed plastic deformation of relatively large (>3 µ) NaCl and KC1 whiskers, although the smallest, most perfect whiskers were completely elastic. Eisner" noted plastic deformation and microcreep of iron and silicon whiskers at room temperature after straining beyond the yield point. Whiskers reported to exhibit creep at stresses below the yield point were zinc1'-" and Silicon.15 Cabrera and price" observed some zinc whiskers which crept at room temperature after a short incubation period but then stopped creeping after a short time. Because some of their specimens exhibited no creep, they concluded that those whiskers that crept were relatively imperfect. Pearson, Reed, and Feldman15 observed similar creep behavior of silicon whiskers at 800°C. They also concluded that creep of the whiskers was a result of imperfections in their crystals. Brenner16 observed delayed failure of A12O3 whiskers at elevated temperatures but found no evidence of plastic deformation up to 2030°C (99 pct of E.EREINAN and M.SALKIND,JuniorMembers AIME,are Research Scientist and Chief, respectively, Advanced Metallurgy Section, United Aircraft Research Laboratories, East Hartford, Conn. Maunscript submitted April 5, 1968. IMD the melting temperature). Brenner also noted7 that some copper and iron whiskers exhibited delayed kinking above 350°C while others did not. One can conclude from these observations that small relatively perfect whiskers could exhibit completely elastic behavior during sustained elevated-temperature loading of composites. Since A13Ni whiskers tested in both bending and tension were found to exhibit no evidence of plastic deformation at room temperature'7'18 this study was initiated to determine whether or not creep of A13Ni whiskers occurred at the elevated temperatures at which creep in the composites was observed. Whiskers were chemically extracted from ingots of unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eutectic, constrained in bending to various elastic strains and heat-treated. The bending constraints were removed after heat treatment and the amount of permanent set was taken as a measure of the time-dependent plastic deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Ingots of eutectic Al-A13Ni containing nominally 6.2 wt pet Ni were unidirectionally solidified at approximately 11 cm per hr using a process described elsewhere.19,20 The starting materials were 99.99 pct pure. Cylindrical sections cut from the center of each ingot were placed in a 3 pct aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and the whiskers were extracted as described previously.17 The whiskers nearest the surface were blackened somewhat due to overexposure to the acid while the center of the ingot was being dissolved These partially attacked whiskers were discarded. An intermediate zone of silver-gray-colored whiskers was collected and stored in methanol for use in relaxation experiments. Individual long pieces of A13Ni whiskers were placed on Fisher Precleaned Microscope Slides. These normally straight whiskers were bent elastically into arcs or loops of varying radii by manipulating their ends with a slender probe. The mass attraction between the whisker and the probe was sufficient to cause the whisker to follow the probe. The whiskers were retained in the elastic bend by the surface tension of a fine residual film on the slides. By using long whiskers, the action of the surface tension on the unlooped ends of the whisker allowed high elastic strains to be maintained in the loops. After each whisker was bent, a photomicrograph was taken for use in measuring the bending strain. The range of strains studied was 0.003 to 0.055. The bent whiskers were then encapsulated in Pyrex tubes at pressures between 10"6 and 5 x 10"6 mm of mercury and heat-treated at 320°, 415°, and 510°C (respectively 53, 61, and 70 pct of the peritectic decomposition temperature). After each heat treatment, the liquid film on the slides was found to have dried, but the whiskers were held in their original shapes by a residue on the slide. An experimental method is describedfor Ihe determination of the derivative of the surface free energy (y,) with surface orientation using symmetric bicrystals. The method measures the equilibrium root-angle of grain boundary grooves for the same grain boundary on two different surfaces. In contrast to previous methods, the presence of annealing twins is not necessary. Results on silver at 900°C indicate that ??s/?3 is 0.014y, on the (loo), 0.075y, on the (111), and < 0.004?s on the (110). DURING an investigation of the kinetics of grain-boundary grooving on silver&apos; values of the derivative of the surface free energy ?s with respect to orientation were needed. Previous investigations of these so-called torque terms show that, for low-index planes in copper2 and nickel,&apos; a finite derivative exists even near the melting point. These two studies give the only previously published values of the torque on low-index metal surfaces. These investigators measured the equilibrium root angles, both greater than and less than 180 deg, along the lines where a twin boundary intersects a free surface. The technique described here is suitable for materials which do not have annealing twins, and enables the surface for study to be chosen instead of having to work in a direction normal to the twin trace on the surface. The purpose of this paper is to describe this new technique and to report the values found for the (111): (100), and (110) surfaces of silver. To check the technique proposed above, a series of 99.99 pct Ag bicrystals were used. These bicrystals were grown from the melt by a modified Bridge-man technique so that a low-index direction was parallel to the growth direction. Two orthogonal faces were studied on each bicrystal. This chapter will outline the operating procedures at Freeport Kaolin Co.5 kaolin mining operations in Georgia, with emphasis on explaining new techniques recently introduced to reclaim mined-out areas for reforestation. Kaolin is found in the central Georgia area (See Fig. 1) in lenticular, sedimentary deposits of high purity. The beds are Cretaceous in age and vary from 4 to 60 ft in thickness, under a cover of sedimentary overburden ranging from 5 to 150 ft. The kaolin beds contain the mineral kaolinite (a hydrous aluminum silicate) and have a particle-size distribution ranging from about 20µ to the submicron level and averaging about 60% below 2µ. The only contaminants in the deposits are coarse mica, quartz particles, and minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. These kaolin deposits vary widely in quality from deposit to deposit and also vary within individual deposits. Some of the controlling quality specifications which are determined during exploration are viscosity in water suspension, optical brightness index as measured by reflectance, amenability to bleaching, and particle-size distribution. For this reason, only a small portion of the total kaolin reserves in the Georgia belt are suitable for wet processing for the present markets being served. Kaolin clays are selectively mined by different mechanical methods and are beneficiated by both wet and dry processing to produce a number of products used as fillers and coatings in the paper industry; fillers or additives in the paint, plastic, and rubber industries; and as basic raw materials for the ceramic industry. The State of Georgia is the largest kaolin producer in the United States, with 3,206,454 tons produced in 1966, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics. Freeport Kaolin Co’s processing plant is located in Gordon, Ga., about 20 miles east of Macon, Ga.

A high-temperature X-ray diffraction method has been used to study the composition and the kinetics of formation of oxide scales at 800 °C on iron and pure iron-nickel alloys containing 25.6, 75, and 84 pct Ni. This technique has been combined with chemical analysis, and metallographic examination, and determination of weight-gain time curves. The 75 and 84 pct Ni alloys form a three-layer scale consisting of porous NiO next to the metal, a spinel layer, and a -Fe203 on the outside. The 25 pct Ni alloy produces a scale of spinel and Fe,O,, in which, however, traces of FeO and NiO are observed near to the metal. On all the nickel alloys the Fe20, is orieqted with the (107) plane parallel to the surfaces. The exposed surface of the Fe20, is in the form of needles whose axis is perpendicular to the specimen surface. Although the alloys show nonuniform oxidation rates as determined from weight-gain measurements, the X-ray data indicate that the total scale and individml scale layers grow uniformly and parabolically. Deep subscale formation is observed in the 25 pct Ni alloy only. This appeared to be associated with cracking of the scale and penetration of the oxygen along the grain boundaries. ALTHOUGH film formation has been investigated by high-temperature electron-diffraction techniques, for example by Gulbransenl and Hickman,&apos; there have apparently been no investigations of scaling by methods permitting study of the scale during formation at the reaction temperature. Methods involving quenching of scales are based on the working assumption that no significant changes take place on cooling. In general, however, compounds may disproportionate, and the different thermal expansions of constituents may cause disruption of the scale on cooling. In particular, some scales cannot be quenched without spalling. These difficulties are avoided by X-ray diffraction examination at the temperature of formation. High-temperature diffraction procedures also provide a method of determining the kinetics of formation of each phase separately in a multicom-ponent scale. The scaling of binary iron-nickel alloys Containing up to 30 pct Ni at a temperature of 800°C has been studied by Benard and Moreau using cooled specimen~,~ whilst Foley, Druck, and Fryxel14 made an electron-diffraction study of cooled oxide films formed on an iron 42 pci Ni alloy. In the present work the scaling of three iron-nickel alloys containing 25.6, 75, and 84 pct by weight of nickel, at 800°C in oxygen at atmospheric pressure was investigated by X-ray diffraction techniques using a Norelco Geiger-counter diffrac-tometer. The oxidation of iron was investigated for comparison. In addition normal metallographic examinations and chemical and X-ray analyses were made, and weight-gain time curves obtained. EXPERIMENTAL Materials Used—The analyses of the alloys were as follows: Percent by Weight Nickel 25.6 pct 75.4 pct 83.2 pct Aluminum 0.004 None found 0.002 Cobalt — 0.05 0.05 Chromium — — — Silicon — 0.01 None found Carbon All less than 0.05 pct The chemical analysis of the iron was: Al— 0.002 i 0.001 pct, C—0.007 pct, Cr less than 0.001 pct, Cu—0.002 ± 0.001 pct, Mn—0.003 ± 0.001 pct, N—0.0002 pct, 0-0.013 pct, P—less than 0.0002 pct, Pb—not detected, S—0.0017 pct, Si—0.0095 pct, Sn—none detected. This iron was the same as that used to make the alloys and was obtained from the same source-Vacuum Metals Corp. One specimen of pure iron from The British Iron and Steel Research Association was used for preliminary investigation. In December, 1879, I was sent to the Bassic mine of Colorado and then to Lone mountain, near Silver City, N. M., and to various copper-camps in Arizona. I staged from Glorietta, N. M., to Tucson, Ariz., stopping at Silver City to see the Cosette mine. This mine led to the opening of the Lake Valley mines, and is a deposit of similar formation. New Year&apos;s day, 1880, found me crossing the Rio Grande above the Jornado del Muerto. At Aleman, Victorio&apos;s band crossecl four hours ahead of us. We picked up four wounded soldiers to take to Fort Bayard, for during the day the colored troops under General Hatch had been driving the Indians back through the San Andreas mountains. The traveler of to-day little realizes the dangers of these trips, when over very rough roads we made about 100 miles in a day and a night. I subsequently made this trip six times, up to 1882, and each time I missed an Indian attack by from one to four days. The day I arrived at Silver City news had come of the massacre of 75 women and children at the San Francisco ranch. The fighting-men of&apos; Silver City had gone to rescue others. I was the only passenger from Socorro, N. M., until we picked up the soldiers. The next day we came suddenly on 5 of Victorio&apos;s band, but we had picked up several miners, so our stage bristled with guns, and we mere let alone. At or near my stone quarry, 6 miles from Socorro, 9 men, were killed by the band that, a day or two after, killed George. Daly, Lieutenant White, and all their men. During this raid, our miners and women at the mine slept in the tunnel. At the Cosette mine I had 35 men at work. These Indian raids had

Dr. Arthur H. Elliott has been connected with the gas industry for upward of thirty-eight years and was a chemist to whom the industry is deeply indebted for the application of the science of chemistry to its problems and processes. He was born in London, England, in 1851, and was the son-of a physician. While a child he was taken to France, where he received his early education, learning to speak the French language before his native English. His father having destined him for the medical profession, he commenced his studies on his return to England, but his attention being attracted to chemistry, he gave up the study of medicine to pursue that of chemistry. While still a student, he obtained a reputation as an iron and steel analyst, publishing two methods of analysis, one for the determination of sulphur .and the other for the determination of carbon in cast iron. On his graduation from the School of Mines at South Kensington, he left England intending to go to Australia, where an uncle resided, having in mind also the possibility of a trip to China. On his arrival in New York, he met Professor Charles F. Chandler, to whom he had a letter of introduction, and who induced young Elliott to remain. He graduated from Columbia College with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1883. He became demonstrator in chemistry at the College of Pharmacy and afterward professor of chemistry and physics at the same college. He became connected with the Municipal Gas Lighting Co. in May, 1880. In. November, 1.884, when consolidation took place, he became engineer-chemist of the Consolidated Gas Co., which position he held until May, 1910, when he resigned, but was retained as consulting chemist until his death. Recently Columbia University conferred on him the honorary degree of Master of Science.

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs is collected annually by the Geophysical Activity Committee of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data is obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations (which are) known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections, namely ground methods, airborne methods and research. In 1968, 515 questionnaires were circulated throughout the non-Communist world and 283 replies were received which is a 55% return. A 67% return was received from the U. S. organizations surveyed so the statistics quoted in this report for the United States are reasonably reliable. This report is published in condensed form, but with emphasis on the United States statistics, with the permission of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. It was presented at the 39th Annual International Meeting of the SEG in Calgary, Alberta, on September 15, 1969. Worldwide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1968 with total expenditures of United States $41.4 million, compared lo $32.3 million in 1967, representing a 28%, increase. The expenditure distribution by area and type of activity is shown in the graph on page 64. In terms of money spent, ground geophysical surveys accounted for 49% of the total, airborne survey&apos;s 36% and research 15%. The percentage of the money spent on ground geophysical surveys fell by approximately 7% from 1967, that for airborne surveys, increased by 5%, and for research the amount increased by 2%. Industry accounted for 79°1% of the total monies spent on mining geophysical activity in the world in 1968 and governments and universities 21 o%.

THE hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, [t] but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. THE PROCESS Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

For a very brief description of the North Texas area and the general geological features with which it is associated, the reader is referred to the summary for 1935. As in previous years, the authors have been unable to undertakc the almost impossible task of isolating statistics for the hundreds of productive "spots" which are included within the generally productive areas of the several counties. However, pools that appear to be definitely isolated—as, for example, the Foard County production and the new pool recently developed southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County—are covered separately. During the year 1936, both routine development in proven or scmi-proven areas and exploratory drilling showed a decrease over the year 1935, there having been a total of 1453 wells drilled in the district during 1936, as compared to 1619 in 1935. It is also of interest to note that abandonments exceeded completions in 1936. Developments during 1936 While a number of local productive spots were found in Wilbarger, Archer and Wichita Counties, and numerous minor local extensions to older producing areas were developed in practically all the producing countics in the district, only two discoveries of sufficient importance to justify special mention were made. Anderson and Kerr No. 1 Bruhlmeyer, about two miles southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County, was completed in April, at a total depth of 2014 ft., for an initial production of 315 bbl. daily from a sand of Pennsylvanian (Canyon) age. Development has been rapid and the field is about drilled up. During November the 100 wells in the field averaged about 40 bbl daily. The structure appears to be a small fold associated with the northeast flank of the main uplift, which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Cooke and Montague Counties.

W. ROWLAND Cox,* New York, N. Y. (written discussion?).-The process described by Mr. Malcolmson undoubtedly represents a great stride toward conservation of our natural resources. Without discussing the subject from an economic standpoint, I wish further to emphasize the fundamental principles of the Smith process in order that its economic value may be fully appreciated. The process is essentially a means of producing an ideal fuel, as regards its combustion qualities, by the removal of the so-called volatile matter from the coal, in the form of byproducts, which have value for other purposes far in excess of their fuel value. In other words, coals which contain. large amounts of gas, tar, and ammonia, and are not suitable for domestic or industrial fuel, or for treatment in byproduct coke ovens or gas retorts; because they possess poor coking qualities, can he prepared for commercial use by the. Smith process with a very high degree of efficiency. Much work has been done along this line, both in this country and in Europe, in developing a means of preparing coal, as the economic advantages have long been recognized. To the best of my knowledge, the Smith process is the only one that has proved its commercial adaptability. Distillation of coal at 900° to 1000° F. (480° to 540° C.) yields a large amount of tar and oils. The residue of the distillation, however, is a very friable semi-coke, wholly unsuitable for use as a fuel, unless it can be charged directly into a byproduct gas producer. The problem which confronted the inventor was then to convert this carbon residue into a commercial product, and it is in this step that the Smith process has overcome the obstacles which prevented a number of other methods from becoming commercially practicable.

The formal outline of Mr. Hague&apos;s life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write—and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore able to present an authoritative sketch—concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb. 24, 1836, at Boston, Maes., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D.,an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary education in private schools, he studied in 1854 at the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. 5. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. The hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. The Process Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

Ore estimation at Cyprus Pima mine begins with estimating average copper grades for mine model blocks. Accuracy of the estimates has been checked four times in the last several years by comparing the estimates with arithmetic averages of corresponding blasthole (BH) assays. The data file now contains 3.567 estimated blockgrades and more than 10,000 blasthole assays. These data were compared by straight-line regression analysis at appropriate intervals as the body of data grew. Arithmetic averages of the estimates differed each time from arithmetic averages of the BH averages by nearly the same amount. More significantly, regression curves of the new total sets of data did not change position appreciably showing that copper grade estimates of blocks in all grade ranges from the lowest to the highest grade ores remained in error by nearly the same amount. Other studies revealed that core hole assays of the dominant ore type are biased and that that bias almost equals the error in estimation. Discovery of constancy in error indicated that regression analysis could be a means for correcting estimates of average block copper grades. A correction for estimated block grades was developed. It required determining which regression is appropriate for the particular problem, and a mechanism that is demonstrably sound. This paper describes the problem and the solution: No comparable study has been, found in the literature. Two other applications of regression analysis to metal grade comparisons are presented. Each adds a bit of support to a generalization which was suggested by correction of average block copper grades, namely, when performance of an estimate is to be evaluated, the variable taken to be the yardstick for the performance should be regressed on the estimate.

The relationship between hardenability and weldability has been mentioned many times. The ease of making a hardness survey has led to its wide use as a criterion of weldability and with a given class or series of steels for which the ductility under weld heat-treatment is known the test is entirely suitable. However, in studying a new steel the hardness survey is of less value, since it is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between hardness and ductility. Several attempts have been made to derive indices for weldabilityl and hardenability from the chemical analysis. In most of these proposals the effects of the different elements were considered to be additive, but recently Grossmann2 proposed a novel method of calculating the hardenability of a steel from its chemical composition. In the method proposed, a steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its car- bon content and grain size, and this base hardenability is multiplied by a factor for each chemical element present. The final product is the hartlenability. The purpose of the present study is to point out the possible relationship between hardenability and the effect of welding on hardness and ductility for a number of plain carbon and low-alloy steels. The composition of the 25 steels reported in this paper as determined by chemical analysis is given in Table I. To eliminate the effect of variations in finishing temperatures, the 1/2-in. plates were normalized after heating for one hour at 1650°F. in a con-trolled-atmosphere furnace. The PSU/MVS program, one of the computer programs for ventilation network analysis most recently developed at The Pennsylvania State University, was applied to the analysis of modifications to an existing ventilation system for a coal mine located in southern West Virginia. The program is well designed and has diversified capabilities which allow the users to make decisions on the optimum size and number of fans, the location and number of airshafts, and the optimum operational procedures. The mine had 10 working faces, from which the average production rate was about 5900 tons of clean coal per day. Two vane-axial mine fans were used in parallel at a shaft, and both of them operated simultaneously. One additional shaft was in the final construction stage and it would be used in four months to alleviate the load for the existing fans and distribute intake air more evenly. The overall ventilation surveys, including the altimeter pressure survey and the air quantity survey, were carried out in the mine entries, shafts, slopes, and gob areas. Computations were made using the above-mentioned computer program on the present condition and after one additional fan was placed in operation at the new shaft. Also, recommendations were made on the air route and fan blade settings for the most economical and efficient ventilation system. Further studies were carried out to decide the proper period when the third air shaft would be required according to the long-term mining plan. Additional branches were added for the next 4 years of the production plan, and the ventilation conditions were tested at the end of each year. Numerous combinations of blade settings and modifications of air routes were tested. It was recommended that the third air shaft be added at the end of the third year so as not to experience fan stall.

APART from the hypothesis of a .cosmic origin (which failed of acceptance because it was not adequately supported by facts), the only important controversy concerning the origin of petroleum has been, for a long time, between the advocates of inorganic and of organic origin respectively. Each of these theories has had a long history of development, and is still being perfected, under the influence of two causes: (1) the increasingly extensive and thorough study of the oil-fields (of which new examples are periodically discovered and opened); and (2) the progress of synthetic experiments devoted to this question. Moreover, the advance in our physical and chemical knowledge of the properties of this peculiar natural product has necessarily modified all criticism of conflicting views. I. THE HYPOTHESIS OF INORGANIC ORIGIN That the notion of an inorganic origin of petroleum, first set forth by Berthelot in 1866, and afterward ingeniously developed and formulated by Mendelejeff, should thus have proceeded chiefly from chemists, is quite natural; for the question was one of possible chemical processes in the earth&apos;s interior, and of imagined chemical reactions to be, verified by experiment. Hypotheses of this kind were suggested by many chemists, of whom two, P. Sabatier and J. H. Senderens, may be specially named by reason of their highly interesting chemical experiments. Among geologists, Mendelejeff&apos;s hypothesis was received at first with much interest and favor; for it rested on the assumption of a central terrestrial mass of iron carbide, and the geologists had good reasons for adopting that assumption. Yet comparatively few of them attempted to furnish geological proofs of the hypothesis: the majority either silently believed in it, or for one or another reason rejected it altogether.
