These impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel—especially steel made by the oxidation processes—the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished ar at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of' the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in conlmercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

Rock mechanics is a very new science. It has been accepted as a recognized discipline for some two decades, but it is only within the last five to ten years that it has been common to include the teaching of rock mechanics as a separate subject in undergraduate curricula at universities. Thus, few senior mining engineers practicing in industry, either men in charge of production or those engaged in mine planning and design, are familiar with the subject. That this unfamiliarity has continued so long is also due in part to the fact that the results of rock mechanics investigations have been published in a large number of different periodicals covering subjects ranging from experimental stress analysis to obscure branches of applied earth sciences. The first really useful textbook ' in the English language was published only in 1965, in Canada. It made available to students and to practicing engineers, for the first time in concise form, the essential body of accepted knowledge about rock mechanics and developed the theories on which it is based in a simple, clear and logical manner. Another factor which has resulted in rock mechanics science being slow to be accepted by the mining industry is that research work has often appeared to be esoteric and unpractical. Senior engineers have been reluctant to spend money on the application of new knowledge when the process of application seemed uncertain and ill-defined, and where the cost of field investigations (which is necessarily high) appeared to offer no certainty of economic reward. This is a reasonable attitude on the part of mining engineers; they are responsible to skeptical boards of directors whose chief concern is, very properly, the net return on capital invested. In 1882, The Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., acquired producing copper mines at Metcalf and Morenci (locally called Longfellow). Metcalf is situated a distance of 7 miles, and Morenci a distance of 6 miles from the general office of the company at Clifton, Ariz. A reduction works with five blast furnaces was built in the center of the town of Clifton in 1884 and operated until January, 1914. Concentration of oxidized ores was begun in 1890-1891, in a mill built adjoining the smelter, and id October, 1893, a leaching process was started for treating tailings from the oxide mill. A sulphide concentrator with 300 tons capacity was built at Clifton and started treating chalcocite ores in July, 1896. This was the first mill to treat low-grade copper-siilphide ores successfully. Another concentration mill for sulphide ores was erected at Morenci in 1900. The sulphide mills are now being remodeled to treat ores by concentration and flotation, with a capacity of 4,000 tons at Morenci and 500 tons at Clifton. The leaching plant has not been running since September, 1914. THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. GENERAL THEORY OF SEGREGATION The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. If solidification proceeds slowly enough, or if the liquid and solid phases are maintained in contact with one another for a sufficient time, a condition of equilibrium is set up, which may be represented by a phase diagram. The Wheeler Condenser & Engineering Co., of Carteret, N. J., is now building a line of horizontal and vertical shaft centrifugal pumps for general services, as well as for condenser work.. This company has been building centrifugal pumps for over 20 years, most of them being used, however, in connection with condensers. The new line of pumps is suited for all services. A small motor-driven unit for tank or stand pipe operation is shown in Fig. 1. Referring to the sectional illustration (Fig. 2), it will be seen that this pump conforms to the most recent advances in centrifugal pump construction, having a two-part divided casing, with the suction and discharge nozzles in the lower half. The impeller is of the closed double-suction type, protected by labyrinth wearing rings. The shaft is protected from the water by bronze sleeves, which screw on to the shaft and extend clear through into the bearing bracket boxes. Bearings are of the ring-oiled type, and in the outboard bracket, is a ring-oiled thrust bearing, which is a refinement not usually found in double-suction

It is the purpose of this note to report the crystal-lographic data for nine new B5A compounds* having the Cu5Ca structure, with A a rare earth and B a transition element, Co, Ni or Cu. In previous papers, some magnetic data1 and preparation and crystallo-graphic data2 for other B5A compounds having the same structure have been reported. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Tables I and 11. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previously by Wernick and ~eller.' The abnormally large atomic volume of Yb metal3 is not manifested in Ni,Yb, when one compares it with the compounds reported here and the data of reference 2. This is not true for the compound YbAl,, having the cubic Laves structure (MgCuz), to be discussed in other papers.4'5 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence of 3; i.e., the 2 s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.4'5 Lattice constants for four of these compounds prepared by levitation melting have been reported by Nassau, Cherry, and wallace.' In the extreme northeast corner of the State of Washington, on the Canadian border, lies the Metaline mining district. This district is old in history, but young in production. Geology The Metaline district is a zinc-lead area of the replacement type in dolomite and limestone. The ore bodies of the Josephine horizon are in many ways similar to the ore bodies of the famous Tri-State zinc fields. The beds are faulted and folded and have varying low dips in varying directions, and underlie large areas of the district. History Production started in 1927 on a very limited basis. The property is now mining and milling 700 tons per day. The mine is opened by adit tunnels and a vertical shaft. As the ore horizons gained depth, it was necessary to sink inclines to follow the ore horizon (see Fig 1). From 1927 to date, approximately 600,000 ft of diamond drill was put down This work indicated that suficient tonnage existed to justify a redesigning of the whole operation, surface and underground. After four years of general study, the following program was planned: 1. A new mine entrance, which would be an incline, that could follow the ore body down at whatever pitch was necessary. The incline will be equipped with conveyors for the moving of ore and waste to the surface and with tractor-type locomotives for man and supply transportation. 2. The new incline also required a new type of mining which was developed and is now in use. It is called contour mining and will be described in a future paper. 3. The new incline exit would necessitate the moving of the mill and mine shops across the Pend Oreille River. This part of the program is now underway. The Incline The sinking of the incline was to start as soon as World War II ended and was as follows: The first leg of the incline was to be sunk from the surface 1600 ft on a 17" slope. The collar and first level at elevation 2180 ft, the second level at elevation 2000 ft, the third level at elevation 1875 ft, and the fourth level at elevation 1700 feet. From the 1700 ft elevation the incline was to flatten out to 12" for 400 ft to give the necessary depth for the ore pockets below the 1700 ft level and the necessary clearance for future sinking (see Fig 1 and 2). Due to lack of manpower in 1946, the program was changed and was as follows: A drift was driven from the old mine workings on the 1700 ft elevation in an easterly direction. At 1300 ft the drift was turned N 50" E and at this point a raise was driven 180 ft on a 50" slope. This raise intersected the Josephine horizon and commercial ore was encountered. At the 2000 ft mark, a main raise was driven, 245 ft on a 50" slope, and the 1875 ft elevation was cut. Exploration drifts were started on this level and production followed on a limited basis. The main drift at the 2500 ft point was turned N 35" E and ran parallel to and 10 ft east of and under the proposed incline line. At the proposed intersection of the drift and incline on the 1700 ft elevation, it was planned to raise the incline to intersect the 245 ft raise and to continue on to the surface, a distance of 1600 ft. When this proposed intersection point was reached, a heavy flow of water, approximately 800 gpm, was encountered and all work on the main drift face was stopped. This water flow flooded the main pump station in the old mine and the two lower levels with approximately 20,000,000 gal of water. The water was controlled and finally drained from the cave areas and lower levels after six months of pumping. After the heavy flow of water was encountered in the main heading, it was decided that the incline would have to be started from the surface, as originally planned, so that too much time would not be lost. The surface overburden had to be removed, a total of 6000 yards. A temporary dry house for 6 men was built. An 8 in. churn drill hole was intersected in the first raise driven from the 1700 foot elevation tunnel. Air and water lines were placed in this hole, and air and water were delivered to the collar of the incline from the mine working. A new log has been developed for quantitative formation evaluation which is based on a measurement of the length of time slow neutrons survive before they are captured in the rocks and fluids. The logging instrument employs a cyclically pulsed neutron generator and a gated scintillation counter which is synchronized with the source. The source emits short, intense bursts of 14 mev neutrons once every 1,000 microsec and is quiescent between bursts. During the period the source is quiescent, the detector is electronically actuated for two independent preselected intervals. A comparison of the counting rates during these two intervals gives a measure of the rate of decay of the slow neutrons and of the associated gamma radiation. The average neutron lifetime in most earth formations is in the range from 50 to 500 microsec. It can be measured during a continuous logging operation at conventional logging speeds. The design of the logging instrument is described and the results of tests are compared with theoretical predictiom. Formulas are developed which give the relationship between log response and formation properties. It is shown that the method is particularly sensitive to formation fluid salinity, and that salt water saturation can be measured accurately in either cased or open hole. The measurement can be made independent of borehole size, fluid type, casing and tool position in the hole by properly selecting the intervals during which the measurements are made. The results of tests with a prototype logging tool are given. INTRODUCTION A new nuclear logging system has been developed which employs the Accelatron,* an accelerator-type neutron source, and accurately measures formation brine saturation in an entirely new way. It has produced a type of formation log with better sensitivity, greater sampling depth and simpler quantitative interpretation than any other nuclear log thus far suggested. The new Neutron Lifetime Log* employs a pulsed electromechanical neutron source and a synchronously gated radiation detector. A prototype instrument has been field tested during recent months to demonstrate the operability of the apparatus and the feasibility of the method. Tests in wells and simulated boreholes have confirmed theoretical predictions and have shown that formation param ters can be measured independent of casing and other borehole parameters. Preliminary results of field tests have indicated that the log may have important and widespread applications. BASIC PRINCIPLE OF NEUTRON LIFETIME LOG The Neutron Lifetime Log is based on the fact that neutrons emitted by a source in a well are rapidly but not instantly captured by the material around the source. Their capture is a matter of statistical probability; the greater the number of capturing nuclei and the greater the "capture cross section", the greater is the probability that a neutron will be captured quickly. The average life of a thermal neutron in vacuum is about 13 minutes, but in common earth materials, the average neutron life ranges between extremes of about 5 rnicrosec for rock salt and perhaps 900 microsec for quartzite. The Neutron Lifetime Log responds to variations in this average neutron life. The theoretical basis for a log of this general type has been well understood by nuclear logging experts in many laboratories both in America and in Russia, and develop mental work along these lines has been in progress for many years. The Russian literature has reported both theoretical and experimental work1,2 but in this country there have been no published reports of progress toward a practical logging instrument. The logging instrument is designed to measure radiation produced by slow neutrons during selected intervals when no neutrons are being emitted by the source. The source is arranged to emit neutrons in bursts or pulses. During the quiescent interval between the pulses, it is possible to observe the exponential "decay" of the neutrons and the neutron-induced radiation as the individual neutrons progressively disappear due to capture by atoms in the formation or the borehole. When a short pulse of 14 mev neutrons is emitted by a source in a borehole, the individual neutrons are slowed to thermal energy within a few microsec. Thus, a cloud of "slow" neutrons is formed around the source within 10 to 50 microsec after the pulse. This cloud is most dense within a few inches of the source, and is progressively less dense out to a radius of about 3 ft, where radiation from the source is practically undetectable.

The number of completions in 1944 in Ohio was only slightly greater than completions in the preceding year, but the initial daily volumes both of oil wells and gas wells declined considerably. The dry-hole ratio was a little lower than in 1943, even though in the year under review considerable effort was made to find new production. No new areas of consequence were discovered. Thirteen new gas pools, the largest of which was 1000 acres and the average 565 acres, were opened during the year. Eleven of these pools were in the Clinton sand, one was in the Oriskany, and one was in the Berea. Approximately 15 small pools might also be rated as discoveries, but because only one or two wells have thus far been completed in each, they cannot at present be properly evaluated. The latter pools average about 120 acres each. Some extensions were made to existing gas pools. The number of oil wells drilled was only one less than in 1943, yet compared with the year 1941, when twice as many oil wells were drilled, the difference is startling. Effective Aug. I, 1944, a blanket subsidy was granted of 35¢ per barrel on all Cleveland-Chatham, Coming, and Lima grades of oil, and 75¢ per barrel on Pennsylvania grade crude. The subsidy was authorized by the Office of Price Administration, with reimbursement to purchasers of the various grades made through the Defense Supplies Corporation, a branch of Reconstruction Finance Corporation. For several years the small operator, particularly the owner of stripper wells, was in a serious position. The subsidy has been a means of real help and, in addition to aiding the operator, it has prolonged the life of many small wells that otherwise would have been abandoned, with consequent loss of daily production and unre-covered reserves. It is questionable whether the price increase is sufficient to revive production of Corning grade, which has

A heavy development campaign progressed during the year 1936 in South Texas1, following up important discoveries made in 1935. Oil and gas wells completed during the year were 1473 against 704 in 1935. The drilling program reached its peak of operations in June in consequence of offset requirements made necessary principally in Duval County in the Seven Sisters, Loma Novio, Lopez and Cole fields. There were six new fields discovered during 1936 as follows: Rhode in McMullen County; Peters, El Mesquite and North Kohler in Duval County; Wood in Starr County and Colorado in Jim Hogg County. No discovery of unusual consequence was made during the year. The pools mentioned above are simply in the primary stages of development. The most intensive exploratory work during the year was in Duval, Webb and Zapata Counties. Considerable activity also prevailed in Starr and Brooks Counties. Much significance is attached to the California Company's discovery in the Alta Mesa field in Brooks County, which is considered to be a deep-seated salt dome. The Comitas field, in Zapata County, developed some surprisingly good production in a shallow sand at 900 ft. and is being followed by a heavy wildcat campaign throughout that area in search of like production. In Starr County an active wildcat campaign is in progress in a continued effort to find new fields northwest of the Sam Fordyce field, in Hidalgo County. This play continues in a northerly direction through Starr and Jim Hogg Counties. New Fields Rhode.—The Rhode field, in southeastern McMullen County, was opened in May by the Magnolia Petroleum Co. with a gas well in the Whitsett (Upper Jackson) sand at a depth of 1810 to 1822 ft., this test is located in the southeast corner of sec. 86 on the Rhode ranch. Four gas wells have been completed, proving up a gas area of 1000 acres, more or less. Development will be slow because of lack of market for the gas.

A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

The following data concerning the general dimensions and district-location of the blast-furnaces of the United States are intended to supplement a paper of similar title, which appears in volume xiv., pages 561 to 577, of the Transactions, and bring the record to the end of the calendar year 1886. The reasons for presenting the figures at so short an interval since the former paper are that the American Iron and Steel Association has lately issued a new directory of iron and steel works (edition of 1886) from which many of the plants which have been inactive are omitted and new industries added, to such an extent as to materially affect the figures presented in the first paper; and also that the improvement in business has encouraged a production of pig-iron in 1886 in excess of any previous outputs, and the results obtained in the industry at large as well as at individual plants form a better index of what the American furnaces can accomplish than those heretofore presented. The statement will not be extended beyond the production of pigiron, although it could well be made to include the manufactured iron and steel; and while the data given have been verified as far as possible up to the close of the year 1886, no attempt, except in special cases, has been made to note the changes which have taken place since that time—changes which within the next twelvemouth will affect some of the figures here presented. At the close of the year 1886 there were 579 blast-furnaces reported on the active list—an apparent decrease, as compared with my former paper, of 97 stacks; but this was not an actual decrease, since most of the furnaces dropped from the Directory were those which, owing to location, inefficient equipment, or fake of ore-supplies, etc., were considered likely to remain inactive, although a number of them will possibly be temporarily put into blast with iron advancing in price. MY first reflection on the subject assigned to me by the officers of this symposium was that a critical description of these lesser characters in the cast of inanimate actors now before us under the title "The Role of Metals in New Transportation" would be about as well received as the description of a horse race in terms of harness buckles and jock-ey's buttons. The word "new" in the title of this symposium seems to shout strong aluminum and stainless steel, unless we transfer our attention to transpor-tation on another planet where the strength-density ratios may require very different engineering treatment. To load a speaker with the "heavier nonferrous metals" amidst the airy consideration of flying or 20th century gliding along the earth and through water, like Hermes, the messenger of the immortals, and expect an instructive or enlivening flight into the area of current exploitation and popular interest in transportation would, of course, require the performance of a miracle or at least the exhibition of genius to which I can lay no claim. But copper and nickel, headliners in other classifications, are also indis-pensable as components of the important new structural materials of transportation, and together with lead, tin and zinc perform many minor or contributory functions in this field that may indeed be con-sidered well-nigh indispensable. A complete and well planned fabric of classification, explanation and critique of even these secondary functions would take much time, and I cannot hope in the 25 minutes or so alloted for the purpose to offer more than a rambling treatment, in which a thread of continuity will be sought by anchorage to one after another of the following attributes or appurtenances of the moving vehicle: 1. The machinery and accessories. 2. The framework and superstructure, and the line or travelway. 3. Light, heat, power, water, sanitary and housekeeping services. 4. Embellishment, or style.

L. C. GRATON, professor of geology in Harvard University, addressed the New York Section on April 24 on-his impressions of the Rand. His beautifully clear and concise address was delivered without notes, so that what follows is merely a resume of the principal points made. The world is apparently coming to the end of ore discoveries easily made, yet we need metals at a steadily increasing rate. If surface discoveries are to decline, then we must find other ores or use less metals. The probable chances of finding ore are greater in the centers of big production than in new districts, as proved statistically. It is unsafe to say that a field is worked out. Therefore, deep mining holds possibilities and is an interesting study that will progressively gain in importance. The origin of the gold in the banket of the Rand has been a geologic football for a long time. Of the various theories, two have survived: 1. Infiltration into permeable conglomerate beds from deep-seated sources; 2. the placer hypothesis, which holds that gravel beds originally had the gold in them. At present, the second theory is accepted by the majority, as a result of the studies by the Union Geological Survey and by E: F. Mellor which were published about fifteen years ago.
