SINce the time of their discovery, the genesis of the ores at Mount Morgan, and the nature of the changes which have affected the surrounding rocks, have been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. Developments at this mine, for a long period the greatest gold producer of the world, show that with depth the orebody grades into copper, of which metal it now furnishes a large output, exceeding in value the gold. In earlier times, the purity of the gold and the first extremely heterogeneous character of the ore made it an interesting problem. Now, the probable depth of the copper enrichment, genesis, and true relations of the neighboring rocks furnish equally profitable material for investigation, and the present somewhat detailed description of these ores and rocks, from microscopic study, may prove of interest. , The mine occupies a highly silicified portion of a belt of quartz-porphyry, which is believed to be the oldest rock of the region. This belt of quartz-porphyry and allied rocks runs north and south between two areas of a later intrusive granite, as shown on the geologic map,' Fig. 1. Near the orebody the quartz-porphyry has been intruded by a dense basaltic mass called the " Old Basic." Cutting all three of these igneous masses are two sets of basaltic dikes, one running northwest-southeast, and the other, cross dikes, northeast-southwest. These dikes may be contemporaneous with, instead of later than, the ore. Their number has caused peculiar difficulties in extracting it, as the clay selvage of decomposed material affords no adhesion between dike and ore, causing great blocks to loosen and come down. DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and¬-sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) Organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand, in water, and (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended-sand pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are con¬tinuous, vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidedly produced by the intro¬duction of feed and withdrawal of products, so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary to get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus %6-in. or plus 3-in. in the United States and plus 36-in. in Great Britain. Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about % in. is made difficult by viscosity effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser . sizes. Although brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel-zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent, copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,' the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

A tentative 870°C isothermal section, the solidus equilibria, and the solubility of Tic and graphite in the nickel solid solution have been determined with arc-cast specimens. Each of the Ni-Ti intermetallics forms two-phase fields with Tic; only Ti,Ni has a measurable solubility for carbon. A quasi-binary eutectic exists between Tic: and a titanium-rich nickel solid solution; ternary eutectics occur on either side, with TiNis or with graphite. Graphite is in equilibrium with a nickel solid solution containing a ratio of Ti/C which increases below the solidus. DURING the past decade, titanium-carbide cermets containing nickel or cobalt alloy binders have been widely studied for high-temperature and wear-resistant applications. Recent work has emphasized control of the carbide grain size and distribution2's and the thermal exparision match between the phases/ The present study was initiated to determine the phase compositions during the sintering or infiltration process, and during subsequent heating. Although the effects of additives and impurities in commercial compositions are important, it was necessary to consider first the pure ternary, Ni-Ti-C. Emphasis was placed on the nickel corner, since the nickel solid solution is the continuous phase in compositions having highest strength. Early metallographic work by Zarubin and Molkov- showed that solid solubility at either end of the section Ni-Tic is small. Edwards and Raine reported that nickel dissolves between 3 and 5 wt pct Tic at 1250° C, on the basis of microstructures of annealed, vacuum-melted powder mixtures. Although the solubility of nickel in Tic has not been measured, Tic formed by the menstruum process in liuid-iron solution contains as little as 0.06 wt pct Fe. BINARY SYSTEMS The most recent determinations of the three binary systems are summarized in Fig. 1. Titanium carbide (6) is predominant among the binary phases, and it melts above the boiling point of nickel. The Ni-C binary is based on separate liquid solubility' ) and solid solubilitylo measurements. The eutectic temperature, 1328OC, is taken from the solidus determination described below. However thermal analysis data by Morrogh and williams also show eutectic arrests in this vicinity in the absence of supercooling. The Ni-Ti binary is taken from the work of Poole

It is shown, from a study of geometric probabilities, that the average number of intercepts per unit length of a random line drawn through a three-dimensional structure is exactly half the true ratio of surface to volume. Since the surfaces can be internal or external, the area of grain boundary or of the interface between any two constituents in a micro-structure can be measured. Other metric relations are tabulated that may be of use in studies of the microstructure of polycrystalline, cellular, or particulate matter generally. IN many fields of scientific investigation the structure of cellular aggregates or random arrays of discrete particles imbedded in some matrix is observed on a two-dimensional section and inferences are drawn therefrom as to the real structure in three dimensions. The biologist's microtome slice, the petrologist's thin section, and the metallurgist's plane polished and etched sections are common examples, although the problem is a general one. Scientists have commonly limited their thinking to the same dimensionality as their structures, and the few attempts that have been strictly three-dimensional in character have been laborious and noteworthy. From a metallurgical standpoint it is often of considerable importance to know, in addition to the volume fraction of two or more components in an alloy, the amount of two-dimensional interface between crystals. Such grain boundaries (which may separate either two identical crystals differing only in orientation or two crystals differing in structure, and possibly also in orientation) have a determining factor upon the mechanical behavior. It is at these boundaries that melting commences, that stress-induced corrosion occurs, and that various precipitates (harmful or otherwise) first appear. The boundary is doubtless of equal importance in nonmetallic crystalline aggregates such as rocks, ceramics, and concrete, and the biologist is deeply concerned with the area of cellular membranes. Many synthetic cellular foams involve similar structural problems. The very term structure usually implies the presence of interfaces and a complete understanding of structure involves nothing but an analysis of the geometrical, metrical, and topological relations between the various interfaces (zero, one and two-dimensional) that exist in a three-dimensional structure. Even systems lacking sharp physical interfaces often have interrelated gradients of composition or velocity (as cored crystals or turbulence cells) in which a neutral surface can be treated as a two-dimensional interface. In an earlier paper by one of the authors' the question of cell shape was considered in terms of simple topological principles without regard to physical dimensions. The determination of the actual size of grains in two dimensions is carried out in a routine fashion in innumerable metallurgical laboratories (see, for example, the ASTM standard methods of grain size determination2), though this is done merely to check the uniformity of a product and has no relation to the actual three-dimensional shape or size of the grains. Some authors have discussed the three-dimensional problem but only on the basis of assumptions as to idealized grain shapes.:'-' Quantitative measurements of microstruc-tures to obtain the volumetric relations of various phases have been carried out by petrographers for many years and are of increasing popularity among metallurgists." The present paper will show how, on the basis of no assumptions other than randomness of sectioning (usually realizable in experiment), it is possible to learn a great deal about the three-dimensional structure. The relations to be derived will generally be used on random arrays of cells or other particles, although they are equally applicable to ordered arrays and even to isolated objects of complex shape provided that suitable random sections can be made. The plane cross section shown contains a network of lines which subdivides the area into two-dimensional cells. The lines, of course, represent merely the intersection of the two-dimensional plane of sectioning with the two-dimensional interfaces between adjacent three-dimensional cells. The structure also contains points at which two or more lines intersect: in three dimensions the points are, of course, lines. In the more general case there may be in three dimensions isolated particles surrounded by a single interface without contact with others, and both two and one-dimensional features which do not necessarily connect with others. Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. Development of the lime industry in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there arc today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. Geology The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft, of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaCo3; 0.35 SiO2; 0.3 R2O3; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 SO3. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 1/2°. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevievc crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 1/2° the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile wide. Heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide have been determined from 325" to 985°K by means of a drop-type diphenyl ether calorinzeter. Based on the values obtained in the present study and those available in the literature, best values lected and computed from 298. 15°K to temperatures close to their respectiue melting points. At temperatures higher than 1700°Kfor TaC and 27000 K for WC, values of Cp and related thermodynamic quantities were extrapolated based on the two Debye parameters: one corresponds to the metal sublattice and the other to the carbon sublattice. The contrzbutzon In the total specific heat due to lattice dilation was evaluated using the Nernst-Lindemann relalionship. The calculated values of Cp were in good agreement with the In view of their refractoriness, tantalum monocar-bide (TaC) and tungsten monocarbide (WC) are of con- experimentally determined ualues. Furthermore, the calculated values of the absolute entropies at 298.15"K were 5.03 and 4.15 in comparison to the experimental values of 5.05 and 4.15, all expressed in the unit of cal per degg-atom. Using the same Debye parameters, values of the linear coefficients of ther mal expansion for TaC and WC were calculated from absolute zero to their respective melting points using the Grüneisen equation. The calculated values are in excellent agreement with the experimental values available in the literature. Finally, the values of the bulk modulus of TaC from room tenzperature to temperature near its melting Point were also calculated using the equation recently derived by Anderson. THE decomposition of austenite in steels, because of its immense practical importance, has been subjected to extensive study in recent years from the point of view of the mechanism of the process.1-3 Although much information has been acquired, a number of questions, principally of theoretical interest, remain. One is that of the atomic-crystallographic mechanism by which each of the various reaction products forms. The isothermal reaction products of the eutectoid decomposition in plain carbon steels (to which this study is restricted) have conveniently been classified in three general groupings-pearlite, bainite, and martensite. Of these several products, pearlite and martensite have been studied extensively, but bainite has received only scant attention. As a result, the mechanism of the formation of pearlite and that of martensite are now fairly well understood while a great deal of uncertainty exists regarding bainite. PEARLITE Pearlite forms from austenite by the precipitation of alternate platelets of cementite and ferrite, which grow into the austenite matrix .2-5 The rate of reaction may be described in terms of a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth.2.3 Mehl and Smith6 have attempted to determine the lattice relationships existing between the ferrite in pearlite and the parent austenite. Using a pole-figure method of analysis, it was found that a limited number of ferrite orientations resulted from the decomposition of a single grain of austenite; it was not possible, however, to decide between two assumed ideal relationships, both of which appeared to account for the experimentally determined pole figure. It was definitely shown, however, that the relationship obtaining was quite different from that determined for the proeutectoid separation of ferrite.7 No attempt was made to determine the habit plane (matrix plane to which the precipitate lies parallel) of the pearlite lamellae. Belaiew8 earlier had stated that the number of directions assumed by the pearlite lamellae in a single grain of austenite was 12 (no details were given) and concluded wrongly, as Mehl and Smiths have pointed out, that the lamellae delineate the [210] planes of ferrite.* MARTENSITE It is known that martensite is a transitional constituent of body-centered tetrag-

IT has been demonstrated that inclusion size, distribution, and composition affect the machin-ability of resulphurized steels. Merchant and Zlatinl concluded that large sulphide inclusions aided machining by forming a (lubricating) coating on the tool face. Boulger et al.² and Van Vlack³ noted that the size, distribution, and composition of the inclusions in the steel affected the machinability. Steel specimens containing large globular sulphide inclusions usually exhibited excellent cutting properties, while machinability was adversely affected by the presence of numbers of oxide-type inclusions. Consequently a thorough knowledge of all the factors which affect the inclusions in the final product is desirable. Since almost all the inclusions have their origin in liquid steel, it was necessary to begin a study of inclusions in free-machining steels by studying the inclusions and chemical segregation in the as-cast ingot. Very little information is available on the size, distribution, shape, and composition of inclusions in large, capped, free-machining steel ingots, particularly the B1113 grade. Gregory and Whiteley4 made a general study of the inclusions in a small, high sulphur, free-machining steel ingot. Also, numerous authors have described the solidification and segregation characteristics of the four basic types of steel ingots, namely, rimmed, capped,7 semikilled,7,8 and killed7,9,10 ingots. Most of these studies were made with plain carbon or low alloy, low sulphur steel. It was desirable to study not only the ingot but also the change in size, shape, and number of inclusions on rolling an ingot to a bloom and thence to a billet. This procedure was followed and it is hoped that this study may serve the dual purpose of adding to the general knowledge of ingot solidification as well as contributing to the knowledge of the size, shape, distribution, and composition of inclusions from the ingot to the billet in a high sulphur, free-machining steel. Procedure A 12.000-lb 23x35x75 in. slab ingot of the B1113 grade was cast, sectioned, and studied both macro-scopically and microscopically. An adjacent ingot from the same heat and of the same size was rolled to a 77/8x77/8 in. bloom and thence to a 21/2x21/2 in. billet. These various bloom and billet sections were also sectioned and studied macroscopically and microscopically. Sectioning the Ingot: The ingot herein described was obtained from the United States Steel Corp.'s South Works Bessemer Blow No. 0193, a B1113 mechanically capped heat. The 23x35 in. ingot (No. 2) was teemed according to normal procedures and after stripping and transportation to the rolling mill was not placed in the soaking pit but allowed to air cool in an upright position. When completely solidified, the ingot was cut into sections by means of a powder scarfing torch and further sectioned by saw cutting as indicated in Fig. 1. Cut No. 2 (1x10x12 in.) from sections A through H was cleaned thoroughly, macroetched in a solution of 50-50 water and hot muriatic acid and used to obtain a macrograph of a horizontal section from the surface to slightly beyond the center of the 23-in. ingot dimension. Cuts No. 5 and 3 (lx81/2xl0 in. each) from sections A through H were treated in a similar manner to obtain a macrograph of a horizontal section from the surface to slightly beyond the center of the 35-in. ingot dimension. The composite macrograph of these horizontal ingot sections, which shows a vertical section of the ingot from top to bottom, is shown in Fig. 2. It should be noted that sections No. 2 are normal to sections 5 and 3 in the composite. Drillings for chemical analyses were obtained from selected positions within the above-mentioned ingot sections as noted in Fig. 3. The oxygen content was determined by the vacuum-fusion method. The kinetics of green pelletization in a laboratory balling drum have been studied, using pulverized limestone as a model system. The growth characteristics of green pellets were found to be extremely sensitive to the moisture content of the material. Empirical kinetic equations, which incorporate a function of specific surface of the pellets as the criterion for growth potential, have been found to describe growth in a nucleation region and in a ball growth region. The rate constants in the kinetic equations are strongly dependent on the moisture content of the material being pelletized. Size distributions of the balls at different stages of pelletiz-ing are also discussed. In many industrial chemical processes, particulate matter can only be utilized if it is in an agglomerated form, such as pellets. Pelletizing is now widely used in iron ore technology1, and it has also been applied to a number of diverse fields such as the production of cement-kiln feed2, fertilizers3, and fluorspar4. Recently, it has been proposed to pelletize dispersion-type ceramic nuclear fuel elements5. In iron ore technology, for example, the production of agglomerates by pelletizing involves two major steps: 1) the preparation of green balls by rolling particles in a suitable balling device and 2) the firing of the green balls to form compact, strong bodies upon sintering. The critical step in a successful iron ore pelletizing operation is generally considered to be the balling operation1. In this paper, which is not concerned with the sintering of green pellets, the words green pelletizing and balling will be used interchangeably. Green pelletizing, or balling, will be defined as the process of forming larger bodies by rolling fine particles on a surface without the application of direct pressure. Two recent literature surveys6" indicate that in spite of the considerable amount of industrial pelletizing, very little is known about the fundamental principles of balling and its kinetics. The first reported research on the kinetics of pelletizing is the work of Newitt and Conway-Jones8. Using silica sands of different sizes in a batch laboratory balling drum, they found that the average green pellet diameter increased linearly with time at constant drum speed, and qualitatively the growth rate increased with moisture content. Generalized conclusions cannot be drawn from their research since the materials which they pelletized were sand and sand-silt mixtures rather than comminuted materials. Moreover, Newitt and Conway-Jones used testing sieves to estimate the size distribution of the green pellets, and this technique limited the range over which they could study the growth kinetics of the pellets. Bhrany and co-workers9 investigated the kinetics of balling iron ore fines on disk pelletizers ranging in diam from 1 to 18 ft. In their investigation, balling was carried out as a continuous operation, and growth kinetics were studied in terms of retention time of the material on the disk. Although the feed material in their study was quite coarse (the maximum size being about 1/2 in.), they also found qualitative relationships between pellet growth and water content, and feed size. In the present investigation, a number of innovations were introduced that refined the experimental measurements and established the reproducibility of balling experimentation. This enabled extension of the range of measurements to include study of agglomerate nucleation phenomena in the fractional mm size. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the nucleation and growth of green pellets in a laboratory balling drum. MATERIALS AND METHOD Pulverized limestone of specific gravity 2.72 was used as a model system in these studies. It has already been established that the balling characteristics of limestone and silica are similar to those of iron ore concentrates 2,8,10, depending on physical, rather than chemical, properties of the particles. The size distribution of the limestone was determined by a wet-dry sieving technique in the sieve range and by a sedimentation balance in the sub-sieve range. Fig. 1 presents the size distribution of the limestone used in this research. This figure shows that the material is finer than 200p (65 mesh) and that 25% of it is finer than 12. Diesel locomotives, trucks, bulldozers, and other diesel-powered equipment are fast proving their superiority for mine transportation purposes. MORE than 100 minerals are mined and processed in the U. S. Management and labor have negotiated wage-scale agreements that have balanced wages and affected cost of labor in such a manner that comparisons can be made of transportation costs. Transportation of materials underground has become of vital importance.1"0 This report describes underground haulage methods and equipment, presents cost analyses, and discusses future plans for underground transportation in metal mines. It does not cover hoisting in shafts or slopes by cage, skip, or cars. Advancements have been made by the metal mining industry in lowering transportation costs in several mines, making it possible to mine orebodies or portions of orebodies not considered economically recoverable a few years ago.7,8 Wumerous reports have been written on transportation at metal mines; this report covers recent haulage at some representative mines throughout the U. S. The term metal mine is used to include all noncoal mines from which up-to-date information was obtainable. The best haulage equipment is subject to break- downs and accidents; but unless the rolling equipment, track, and signal systems are kept in good repair and are operated systematically, these breakdowns and accidents are likely to be frequent, destructive, and more costly than are necessary.10 Rail haulage crews using dependable rolling stock can move trips safely over grades low enough to be traveled without loss of control; this applies particularly if the track is straight and well maintained. Few accidents occur on main haulage lines if visibility and clearance are good and clear track is assured. One-way traffic underground is a recent development contributing to reduction of accidents and increased efficiency in mine haulage (Kelly mine, Anaconda Co., Butte, Mont., and Climax mine, Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo.)." Locomotives: Six types of mine locomotive used in recent years are trolley, storage battery, combination trolley and storage battery, diesel, compressed air, and gasoline. Electric haulage has been displaced by compressed air locomotives, which have been used successfully in certain instances, especially on dirty and wet tracks and steep grades." Either (100) (001] or (110) (0011 oriented secondaries, or both, depending on annealing atmosphere and material composition, grew in a matrix of 2-dimensional grains. The growth dependence of secondaries of(hkl) orientation in the iron and 0.6 pct Si-Fe is explained in terms of surface energy driving forces and the dependence of these driving forces on both (hkl) orientation and amount of oxygen at the surace. (100) [001] grains grow when suflicient oxygen is present at the gas-metal interface to make y100 the lowest (hkl) surface energy. When little or no oxygen is present at the gas -metal interface, making Y110 the lowest surface energy, (110) (001 1 grains grow. When Y100 and y110 are approximately equal but lowest among (hkl) surface energies, both (100) (0011 and (110) (0011 grains grow simultaneously. An excess of surface oxygen produces complete grain growth inhibition in high-purity iron; i.e., a 3-dimensional grain structure is retained over long annealing periods. However, a small amount of silicon in the iron reduces the growth inhibiting tendency of oxygen without altering the (hkl) surface energy relationships. Some information on annealing twins is presented. SECONDARY recrystallization in high-purity a iron, cold rolled to strip a few mils thick, was reported recently.' The present paper provides additional information on this subject, also furnishes similar information on both zone-refined iron and a high-purity 0.6 pct Si-Fe alloy, and treats the more important surface phenomena that determine to a large extent whether one or more secondary recrystallization textures will appear during annealing. Previous studies on high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe2,3 have shown the importance of (hkl) and impurity-atom dependent gas-metal surface energies on the formation of secondary recrystallization textures in high-purity material. For example, either (100) or (110) oriented grains may have the lowest surface energy depending on the amount of oxygen at the gas-metal interface, and hence the highest driving force for growth if other growth factors are the same. Another important phenomenon in high-purity material is stabilization of the matrix structure; neither impurities nor a strong matrix texture seem to be necessary when recrystallization and normal grain growth occur, developing a stable two-dimensional type grain structure. The average grain size in such a structure is usually between one and two times the specimen thickness. Consequently, most of the grains have grain boundaries terminating at exposed surfaces, and this results in gas-metal interfaces (or hkl surfaces) as well as

"We can easily represent things as we wish them to be..” -Aesop INTRODUCTION The first eight chapters of this book have primarily addressed the concepts and fundamentals associated with project valuation, particularly as they apply to mining-related projects. Specific emphasis was placed on the engineering and economic parameters and estimates necessary for quantifying line items in pro forma income statements and the subsequent calculation of net annual cash flows. Given these estimates of relative benefits, costs, and annual cash flows for a project, it then becomes necessary to convert these estimates into measures of relative desirability or attractiveness. The criteria and techniques typically utilized to determine project acceptability or desirability are, then, the topics of discussion in this chapter. Before proceeding it may be advantageous to put the problem of project evaluation into proper perspective by reiterating some of the fundamental concepts developed in Chapter 1. The basic premise set forth in this book is that the objective of the firm should be to maximize its value to its owners (stockholders' wealth). This value or wealth is represented by the market price of the firm's common stock; consequently, the primary objective of the firm can be restated as one of maximizing the value (price) of the firm's common stock in the marketplace over the long term. This price, in effect, is an indicator or index of the market's perception of the company's progress and a reflection of the investment, financing, and dividend decisions made by corporate management. These three major decisions are inter- related and jointly impact the market price of the firm's stock. Therefore, if the objective of maximizing the value of the firm to its stockholders is to be achieved, an optimal combination of the three decisions will be necessary. It is important to emphasize that maximizing stockholder wealth is not the same as profit maximization or even the maximization of earnings per share. Corporate managers making decisions based on the objectives of maximizing profits and/or earnings per share must recognize that these objectives do not consider: (I) the timing or duration of expected returns, (2) the business and financial risks of the promised earnings, or (3) the dividend policy of the firm. Obviously all of these factors are of concern to the company's stockholders and will have an effect on the market value or price of the firm's common stock. Maximizing market price per share, or wealth maximization, is therefore the appropriate corporate objective and

The development of huge production facilities and of new or improved processes for manufacturing magnesium from its raw sources has been an outstanding achievement of this war. Furthermore, at least one new method has reached a stage of pilot production that offers promise. Its potentialities seem to indicate that a reduction in cost and simplification or elimination of problems incident to the use of at least one of the present processes are quite within the realm of possibility. Although magnesium of very high purity (99.9 per cent and higher) is obtained, and the rate of recovery reasonable (60 to 70 per cent). the ferrosilicon reduction process is open to a serious objection, which at the time its use was proposed was thought to be sufficient to raise some doubts as to its success, at least on a high production basis. The temperature range at which the reaction is carried out—namely, 2100" to 2150°F.—is very close to the failure temperature of the material of which the retort is made. It is so close that for a time it was assumed it might make commercial use of the process an impossibility. However, at the time under discussion, the demand for magnesium was so great that it was felt by those who had to go ahead and produce this essential metal that the emergency warranted their taking a chance on this process. Subsequent developments have fully justified the soundness of their decision. Fortunately for the war effort, when the plants were put into operation it was discovered that although the retorts did collapse in rather short periods of time, as predicted, they could be blown back into operable shape by application of high-pressure air. This practical method of operation so relieved the situation that the problem disappeared. Nevertheless, if the process had not been successful, or the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process had not been able to keep pace with demands, our war program would have been seriously impaired. Fireless Cooker'' Process For this reason a program was set up and assigned for the development of a new method that had been suggested to the War Production Board in 1941. STUDIES on the precipitation of a face-centered from a body-centered structure-a common occurrence in alloy systems-are essential to the development of a theory for the formation of segregate structures. The separation of the alpha phase from the beta of the copper-zinc system is an example of this type of precipitation. EARLIER STUDIES ON THE SUBJECT R. F. Mehl and 0. T. Marzke1 in 1931 presented a paper giving the results of some investigations carried out by them on the segregate structures produced when the alpha and gamma phases of the copper-zinc system and the alpha phase of the copper-aluminum system precipi-tate from the beta phases of these systems. They showed that the alpha phase precipitates as needles close to the [111] directions of the beta phase. In the discussion of that paper some doubt was expressed about the nature of the segregate. More investigations were undertaken to determine the character of the precipitate in the copper-zinc system and also the orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate. The present paper gives the results of these investigations. Since the publication of the earlier paper, several other papers on this subject have been published in this country and abroad. Haneman and Schroder2 reported that the alpha phase precipitates as needles along the [111] directions of the beta phase and that these needles align themselves to form plates on the {111} planes of the matrix. Mathewson and Smith3 pointed out that the {111} plane does not contain the [111] direction and that it would be quite impossible, therefore, for needles in the [111] direction to form plates on the {111} plane. Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. On the other, or western, side of Hunter's creek (see map, Fig. I), a higher mountain rises, on the slope of which the regular dip of the Triassie or Upper Carboniferous red sandstone strata, alternating with white layers of the same rock, can be clearly seen from town. THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 768 C (1414 F), the metal becomes nonmagnetic, and at the "A, point," 910 C (1670 F), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 768 to 910 C, it is sometimes called beta (ß) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 1400 C (2552 E), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non- magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in an inert atmosphere) at 1537 C (2800 F); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures.1 For example, in heating through the A, point, a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 16-1 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always true. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no trans- formation occurs. (See Fig 14-1.) Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well.
