Electrical conductavity and therrnoelectvic nzeasuretnents on synthetic hematite slabs with 0.01 to 0.90 at. pet Ti and with 0.30 at. pet Ca were made. Additions of titanium and of calcium both increased the electronic conductivity with titanium yielding greater n-type behavior and calciurn p-type behavior. Reduction studies of hematite to magnetite in CO-CO2 atmospheres between 600° and 900°C initially exhibited linear kinetics. These linear rates were increased by additions of titanium and decreased by calcium. IN recent years many studies have been reported in the literature on the kinetics of the reduction of hematite and magnetite to iron. In addition, Hansen and Josephl and Schenck and Schultz2 have reported studies on the reduction of hematite to magnetite, the first step in total reduction to iron. In order to evaluate the results of the studies of over-all reduction in terms of the actual mechanism of the reaction and to define further the important factors in the rate- controlling mechanism of the magnetic roasting reaction, the following experiments were undertaken. Specimens of undoped hematite and hematite containing titanium or calcium in solution as doping agents were reduced to magnetite in CO-CO2 mixtures. In addition, electrical-conductivity measurements were correlated with the reduction kinetics using concepts of defect solid-state chemistry. EXPERIMENTAL Fisher certified Fe2O3 powder was used to make specimens for both the electrical and kinetic studies (see Table I for analysis). Doping with titanium and calcium was accomplished by adding TiO2 and CaO powders to the Fe2O3 powder. The powders were mixed in a Waring blender for minimum times of 1/2 hr. Satisfactory blending was achieved based on comparison of analyses of individual specimens af- ter reduction. The specimens were formed in a steel die using opposed punches with a rectangular opening 10.0 by 40.0 mm. The Fe2O3-TiO, platelets were pressed cold at 16,000 psi. They were sintered for approximately 16 hr at 1075°C in air, in accordance with information in the literature3, 4 on the time and temperature needed to obtain solution of the titanium in the hematite. The Fe2O3-CaO mixtures were first cold-pressed at 20,000 psi and sintered for 3 hr at 1225°C to insure solution of CaO. This material was then ground to -325 mesh in a 6-in. ball mill and the resulting powder was used to make platelets in the same manner as above. The sintered platelets were usually between 1/16 and 1/8 in. thick. They were ground on a carborundum wheel and polished on 2/0 paper. Typical dimensions of the kinetic-study specimens were 1.6 by 0.8 by 0.05 cm, and a typical weight was 0.3 g. Conductivity and thermoelectric specimens were approximately the same size, but were subjected to further sintering in order to ensure maximum densification. Finally, all specimens were measured to the nearest 0.0005 in. and weighed on a Mettler H-15 balance to the nearest 0.0001 g and the density calculated. The average density of the specimens used for the reduction studies was 4.87 g per cc, or 7.1 pet total porosity. The standard deviation ranged from 0.14 to 0.063 g per cc within a composition group. In the present study, the apparent surface area as measured with a micrometer was taken as the true surface area. The chemical analyses for calcium and for titanium within a group showed maximum variations of 50.04 pet from the average values used in Figs. 9 and 11. At a large meeting of the members of the American Fund for French Wounded it which Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt presided and at which Mrs. B. Girault Lathrop, President of the Paris Administration A. F.F. W., gave a most interesting address, special rows of seats were reserved for the members of the W. A. A. I. M. E. Those who were unable to be present will be glad to hear that Mrs. Lathrop complimented our organization on having supplied the largest dispensary operated by the A. F. F. W. and the Red Cross in northern France. The A. F. F. W. is going to erect an American Memorial Hospital at Rheims and it is hoped that the one hundred beds in the hospital will be endowed in memory of the men who gave their lives for the liberty of the world. It will be possible not only to endow beds, for which sums of $6000 each are needed, but also to give, as. memorials, sun- parlors at a cost of $10,000 each, two roof gardens at $5000 each, a laundry at $10,000 and a garage at $10,000. The New York Section has undertaken to endow a heel in memory of members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the Great War. Perhaps other Sections or groups of Sections may wish to do the same thing, or if no other Section cares to assume so much responsibility possibly individuals may like to join the fund already growing in New York, in which case they should send their contributions to Mrs. W. A study was made of the effect of the growth conditions on the perfection of single crystals of niobium (columbium). Dislocation densities, determined by means of double-crystal diffractometer measurements , were not greatly affected by the method of crystal preparation but could be reduced by annealing treatments. However, the size, sharpness, and tilt angles of the substructures, observed with X-ray reflection macrograph, were sensitive to variations in growth procedures as well as to subsequent thermal treatments. Although the dislocation density was the same in both types, there were more low-angle bound-aries in crystals grown by zone melting than in those prepared by strain anneal. Mechanisms to account for these observations are discussed in terms of dislocation movements. A planned study of the structure-sensitive properties of refractory metals required the use of single crystals of a high degree of structural perfection and, for ease of handling, of large cross section. It appeared that the strain-anneal technique could satisfy both of these requirements. First, crystals grown in the solid state have been reported to be more perfect than those obtained from the melt.' Second, the diameters of rods which may be produced by zone melting should have a theoretical limit determined by specific gravity, thermal conductivity, and surface tension, while the diameter of strain-annealed rods is limited only by practical considerations. Previously it was shown that niobium (columbium) single crystals of 1 in. diam2 may be grown by strain anneal, compared to the 0.5 in. maximum diameter achieved by zone melting, as reported for molybdenum by Belk.3 The current research was undertaken to investigate and optimize the effect of various process variables on the perfection of 1/4 and 1/2-in.-diam niobium single crystals grown by strain annealing and to compare their perfection to those grown by zone melting. Characterization of these crystals was more conveniently accomplished by means of X-ray than by metallo-graphic techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Zone-melted crystals of 1/4 in. diam were produced by the standard electron-beam zone-melting technique. The swaged and cleaned rods were outgassed, in the solid state at a temperature near its melting point, at a rate of 12 in. per hr, and single crystals were grown by making two molten passes at 2 in. per hr. By maintaining a zone length of 4 to % in., very uniform single crystals several inches long were obtained. For the strain-annealed crystals, an induction heater was used, in preference to other types of heating, to take advantage of the good penetration of large sections. A five-turn coil, 1 in. long, operating at 10 kc and powered by a motor generator, was contained in a vacuum chamber. The rod, suspended from the upper end, was raised through the coil for both recrystallization and crystal growth. In preliminary work single crystals of the same material were also grown with single and multiturn coils powered by a 450-kc generator. A vacuum of 2 X 10-6 Torr was maintained at temperatures up to 2400°C. Starting with electron-beam-melted ingots of 21/2 in. diam, the analysis for which is given in Table I, the material was cold-swaged to the desired cross section of 1/4 and 1/2 in. diam and then recrystallized. The rods were then strained in a tensile machine and converted to single crystals by passing through the induction coil. As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and smallman,4 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point in the poly crystalline portion. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". This procedure has certain limitations. If the bending operation exceeds the critical strain, recrystallization may take place. Also, the amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry, and up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. In preparation for X-ray examination, single crystals were sectioned and planed by means of the spark-erosion technique. Quantification of size, shape and composition has been one of the more difficult areas for those concerned with fine particle processing of coal.' Image analysers fed by optical microscopes and by scanning electron microscopes possessing backscatter detectors and energy dispersive facilities now offer techniques to improve the speed and precision of previous methods. This paper discusses the methodology and procedural difficulties associated with the microanalysis of coal. Photographs show display quality on the image analyser monitor and the equipment mentioned. Data illustrating several of the procedures are included. The major portion of data for design and operation of plant for fine particle processing depends on information regarding size, shape and composition of granular material. The lower limits of particle sizes become more important as lower grade deposits are mined. Because of the trends towards treatment of finer materials, the use of image analysis offers advantages in time, effort and accuracy. As energy becomes more critical, the above applies especially to coal processing. The Zeiss Microvideomat 2, a leading member of the second generation instruments, is now available for image analysis. There is a precision television scanning system with monochrome camera, display, control panel and central processor (see Figure 1).

COAL, like most other minerals, only exceptionally occurs in a sufficiently pure state to he directly available for general manufacturing purposes. And even where this is the case, the small coal or slack is usually more impure than the lump coal, as the slate, clay, etc., from the roof and bottom of the vein become mixed with it in the handling it undergoes. These impurities often exceed ten or more percent in addition to the impurities of the coal itself. The most common impurities of the coal are slate, or shale, clay, and sulphur. The latter occurs in different forms, but most frequently as bisulphide of iron, or iron pyrites, and as sulphate of lime, or gypsum. In both cases the impurities add greatly to the amount of ash, and where they are present in considerable quantities the raw coal, and still more the coke made from it, is unfit for the, manufacture of iron. Coke will contain on an average at least ;fifty per cent, more ash and sulphur than the raw coal from which it is, made. To the manufacturer of iron every additional per cent. of ash which his coal or .coke contains is a source of additional expense, seemingly small, and yet very important in the aggregate. In the blast-furnace, for instance, the ash must be heated up to the melting-point, and, since it is composed largely of refractory substances, the consumption of carbon in melting it will be equal to at least one-half of its weight ; that is, a certain part of the coke is consumed for the melting and fluxing of the ash and is lost. Besides this, it is well enough known to the-iron-master that coke containing less ash makes the slag or cinder more liquid and less inclined to stick to- the walls of the furnace. Fuel containing much sulphur produces generally a white iron, poor in carbon, while from the same ore and flux, with a pure fuel, a good foundry iron might be obtained. The work of separating slate, sulphur, etc:, from the coal 'has as yet only been succesafully accomplished by the washing process. This paper examines the zero order production phenomenon in the context of the size discretized batch grinding model. A restrictive interrelationship between the selection and breakage parameters of the model, which is mathematically sufficient to ensure zero order behavior, is delineated. Based on this interrelationship, a scheme is developed for predicting the values of the selection and breakage parameters for all size fractions from a minimum of experimental data. To test this scheme, dolomite was ground in a laboratory batch ball mill. Successful simulation of the comminution behavior of this system was achieved using the batch grinding model with the parameter values obtained from the proposed scheme. Historically, a preponderance of comminution research has centered on attempts to relate breakage energy to the performance of comminution machines. Concomitantly, grinding data were interpreted almost exclusively in terms of inherently empirical energy-size reduction relationships1-3 or "laws of comminution"4- 6 which were based on highly oversimplified descriptions of the fracture process. In some instances, these relationships provide a crude basis for the correlation of experimental data, but, invariably, this approach is inadequate for meaningful process simulation. The control and optimum design of comminution circuits require a mathematical model capable of depicting the size reduction behavior of every size fraction for grinding conditions of technological importance. Energy-size relationships do not provide this detailed information. For example, an energy-size analysis for batch ball-milled dolomite has recently been completed in the authors' laboratories.7 This analysis provided a satisfactory correlation between the hypothetical size modulus, which characterizes only the finer portion of the size distribution, and the input energy. However, this relation did not constitute an adequate description of the complete system. In general, one of two distinct viewpoints toward simulation has been adopted in recent comminution research. The first approach focuses on the fracture of single mineral specimens, with the essential aim of representing the over-all process in terms of the breakage characteristics of individual particles and the characteristics of the stress field which the particles experience within the particular size reduction device. As illustrated by Harris's review,' the actual incorporation of single-specimen fracture information into a description of the behavior of a multiparticle comminution system has seldom been attempted. The only model to accomplish this incorporation was the one developed by Schönert.8 The Schonert model treats single-passage grinding machines in terms of a distribution of effective loads acting on a particle, a distribution of required particle breakage energies, and the breakage product distribution. However, the use of single-particle fracture behavior to derive models of the size reduction process is at present limited to machines in which the particle residence time is approximately equal to the time required to apply stress. As a result, Schönert's analysis cannot be used to advantage to simulate the complex environment which prevails within a tumbling mill. For multiple-passage systems a second approach to the description of comminution processes has been more fruitful. This approach entails the formulation of a mathematical model which is phenomenological in nature in that it lumps together the entire spectrum of stress-application events which prevail in a system under a given set of operating conditions. The appropriately defined average of these individual events is then considered to characterize the over-all breakage properties of the device. Thus, to analyze the performance of a tumbling mill, the manner in which the particles of a particular size (or size fraction) are stressed need not be distinguished. Instead, a single parameter is assumed to represent the resistance of that size to fracture, given the average grinding environment which exists in the mill. The isolation of such a parameter and a related set of quantities, which constitute the breakage product size distribution for the average event in this size fraction, allows the formulation of physically meaningful descriptive equations capable of yielding precise and detailed information for simulation.

MERCAPTOBENZTHIAZOLE and its sodium salt are marketed under the trade names Flotagen and Flotagen S respectively, for use as collectors for cerussite and other minerals. The structural formulas for sodium mercaptobenzthiazole and for sodium ethyl xanthate are: Chemically there is a resemblance between the two compounds, though the free acid (mercaptobenzthiazole itself) is much more stable than xanthic acid. Both are readily oxidized, e.g., by iodine to disulphides, and can be estimated by iodometric titration. Qualitatively they are similar as collectors in flotation, although there are quantitative differences between them that may be important in practice. It is deduced that the influence of the nitrogen atom is subordinated to that of the sulphur atoms, and that the dominant group of these compounds is the mercapto group -SH or -SNa. The general method of investigation has been based on contact tests. Two temperatures, 10° and 35° C., have been chosen, and with a standard concentration of 20 mg. per liter of mercaptobenzthiazole (i.e., of the free acid) the influence of alkali, cyanide and copper sulphate on contact at sulphide mineral surfaces has been studied. This standard concentration corresponds to about 19 mg. per liter potassium ethyl xanthate; it brings out the differences between the minerals better than a higher concentra-

THE interpretation of notched-bar impact results has been a matter of controversy since the introduction of more or less standard tests by Fremont,1 Charpy2 and others at the turn of the century. Many investigators3-l1 have contributed to the understanding of the significance of such tests. Several symposiums12,13 have been held with the express purpose of discussing the significance and interpretation of the impact tests. It is not the purpose of this paper to review all these contributions to the development of the knowledge on this subject, but rather to present an interpretation of notched-bar impact tests that appears to be in agreement with the available published data. Fundamentally, the interpretation discussed in this DaDer of the brittle failure of some steels in notched-bar impact test is similar to the qualitative analysis presented by Ludwik3 in the 1920's. Essentially, Ludwik stated that the function of the notch was to increase the tensile stress necessary for yielding, and that brittle failure occurred when the stress necessary for yielding exceeded the normal stress required for fracture (with no plastic de- formation). Ludwik, however, had no means of measuring this normal stress necessary for failure of a plastically* undeformed metal, therefore he could not extend his interpretation beyond the qualitative stage. Kuntze14 and recently MC- Adam15 attempted to determine the effect of deformation on the stress necessary for fracture by testing, in tension, specimens notched to various depths and angles. Because of the uncertainties in Kuntze's (and RlcAdam's) analysis of the stresses (which have been pointed out by SachsI6) and the inherent nonuniformity in the stress distribution in notched bars, the results of such investigations are difficult to interpret. A more direct method of measuring the effect of deformation on the fracture stress was suggested in previous papers17-l8 and has been utilized in the present investigation. The present paper concerns itself primarily with the behavior of notched impact specimens. The effects of strain rate, temperature, and stress distribution, which are discussed with reference to the impact specimen, apply just as well to the behavior of metal at the bases of notches in any engineering structure. All that is necessary is to determine the stress distribution in the structure at the base of the notches.

Some unique hydrogeologic issues are inherent in the problems of siting, designing and licensing a mined geologic high-level nuclear waste repository. The problems involve hydrogeologically unfamiliar rocks for which little proven technology has been developed, long containment periods, elevated temperatures, and externally-imposed management constraints. In evaluating the existing national program, it should be recognized that hydrogeology is only one aspect of the total nuclear waste disposal problem, that the use of multiple barriers requires that the hydrogeologic system be considered in its entirety as a total system, and that engineering modifications can improve the isolation capabilities of certain barriers. Important research questions involve the mechanics of transport through dense fractured and unfractured rocks, methods for measuring vertical hydraulic conductivity, and a variety of geochemical questions. Current expectations for "high quality data" from either in situ or laboratory testing are unrealistic, and a modified approach to repository hydrogeology is needed. The dilemma is that the hydrogeological characteristics that make a potential host rock more satisfactory for respository siting are the same characteristics that are difficult to characterize and make the particular site more difficult to license. Finally, evaluation of the containment potential of any candidate site will become meaningful only with detailed underground exploration, mapping and testing in the host rock formations at the repository levels.

The lamp has but just passed the experimental stage, and is now on sale in England for the purpose of testing it in practice. The only complaint I have heard made against it is the high price. It costs six or seven guineas. Possibly that would not frighten you on this side of the water as much as it does us. R. W. RaymonD, Brooklyn, N. Y.: So far as my obsrvations and experience go, we have not yet reached a state of affairs in the coal-mines of this country which calls for the general use of safetylamps by common miners. Certainly such a practice is to be avoided if possible, on account of the recklessness of miners, which it seems almost impossible to control by warning or discipliue. It is much better, if practicable, to confine the use of safety-lamps to inspectors or " fire-bosses," and not to permit the miners to work or to go where naked lights cannot be carried. In a colliery near Pottsville, Pa., with which I was connected for five years, and which had the reputation of being highly "fiery " (jets of fire-damp bubbled continually through the puddles in the gangways, and a thin sheet of it lay along the roof), we managed to avoid all serious

The elastic stiffness coefficients of niobium have been rneaslrred from -150°C to over 650 C and ave in accord with the anomalous temperature dependence previously observed for Young's modulus. This unusual behavior has been shown to be the result of changes in the relative values of the shear elastic coefficients. The bulk modulus remained essentially constant over the temperature range studied, while changes in the shear coefficients produced a more nearly isotropic behavior as the temperature increased. A number of investigators have reported data on the temperature dependence of Young's modulus of polycrystalline niobium. The values cited for the room-temperature modulus ranged from 0.71 to 1.17 x 10" dynes-cm-' (10.3 to 17.0 x lo6 psi) and in each case the modulus was observed to decrease with increasing temperature. In our recent study,8 both polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of essentially strain-free high-purity niobium showed a Young's modulus whose temperature dependence as well as magnitude was strongly dependent on specimen orientation. This was shown to be the result of changes in the relative magnitude of the two shear moduli, C and C'. Young's modulus of polycrystalline samples with strong [110] textures and Young's modulus of single crystals whose orientations were away from the [loo] actually increased as much as 12 pct between room temperature and 1000°C. While studies on the residual effects of previous fabrication, thermal treatments, and impurity contents will probably resolve the problem of the widely differing Young's modulus values observed in polycrystalline niobium, a more complete description of the elastic properties requires an evaluation of the single-crystal elastic constants. A knowledge of these constants can provide a clearer picture of the nature of the temperature dependence, as well as establish a basis for predicting the modulus behavior of polycrystalline niobium, both in the randomly oriented condition and with various fabrication textures. The effects of residual strains on the elastic behavior then can be separated from orientation effects. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Thin rod-resonance techniques were used to obtain both the Young's modulus and shear modulus of single-crystal specimens. The determination of these moduli as functions of the crystallographic orientation of the specimen axis provided sufficient information to permit calculation of the single-crystal elastic constants. POWDER metallurgical methods as applied to zirconium are of great interest because they permit not only the fabrication of parts directly to shape with a minimum loss of material but also the utilization of scrap, and the metal may be processed at temperatures well below the melting point. There are two difficulties involved in the melting of zirconium: 1—High vacuum is necessary for melting, and 2—zirconium reduces nearly all oxides so that it is difficult to find a suitable crucible material. The purest material, zirconium crystal bar, is expensive, and the methods of subsequent fabrication are limited. Cold rolling or extrusion of zirconium crystal bar is suitable for making certain shaped parts, but where melting is involved, the purity of the metal is invariably decreased, and a method of casting to a definite shape does not seem to be feasible. Where it is necessary to hot roll, zirconium must be covered with a steel or copper jacket to protect it from the air. This is necessarily a costly operation. Where annealing of zirconium is necessary it must be conducted in a high vacuum. In an investigation of powder metallurgical methods for zirconium, the zirconium powder used should be characterized by the following properties: 1— Highest degree of purity, 2—uniformity in particle shape and particle size distribution, 3—low compression ratio, and 4—satisfactory strength of the compacted powder (green strength). Zirconium powders have been made by two methods: By the reduction of zirconium tetrachloride (ZrC1,) with sodium,2' *•B "nd by the reduction of zirconium oxide with calcium and calcium chloride." The first method represents one of the earliest attempts to make pure zirconium metal, and the sintered product from this powder is extremely brittle. The second method of making zirconium powder is far more successful, but the powder made in this way has an extremely low apparent density and, therefore, a high compression ratio which makes it difficult to use it for powder metallurgical purposes. For these reasons the above-mentioned zirconium powders were not used in this investigation. To obtain sintered zirconium compacts of highest 'purity and good ductility, it was first necessary to produce a suitable powder. Pure zirconium has been made chiefly by two methods. The iodide method, from which the product is "crystal bar" zirconium, was developed first.'." By this purification process very soft, pure, and ductile zirconium metal can be produced. The second method, developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is the reduction of zirconium chloride with magnesium." The sponge zirconium thus produced is also soft, pure, and ductile.

Iron-carbon alloys containing a single-phase austenite region and a two-phase azcstenite + cementite region at the desired temperature were prepared by partial carburization of iron or partial decarburization of carburized iron. Each sample was held at a fixed temperature until equilibrium was achieved. Analysis of the austenite for carbon then gave the solubility of cementite in austenite. Solubility measzcrements were made for the temperature range 734° to 1012°C. These values together with other data give 7560 cal for the mean heat of solution of cementite in austenite, and 0.765 pct C for the eutectoid composition of austenite. They also indicate that graphite is the stable phase at all temperatures between the eutectoid and eutectic temperature. Measurements of the solubility of cementite in austenite at 927oand 1011 "C, using a method based on the equilibration of iron with boro-cementites, are reported. The solubility of cementite in austenite (?-iron) has been computed by Darken and Gurry1 from the observed solubility of graphite in austenite, and the thermodynamic properties of pure iron and of iron-carbon alloys. They have shown that the solubility of cementite is greater than that of graphite in the temperature range between the eutectoid and eutectic, and thus that cementite is metastable with respect to graphite and austenite saturated therewith. Since their computation is not in accord with the earlier experimental work of Mehl and wells,' the present direct determination of the solubility of cementite in austenite was undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Each iron rod about 1/2 in. O.D. by 4 in. was first carburized at a temperature and with a H2-CH4 gas mixture such that the carbon content would be greater than that corresponding to the solubility of cementite in austenite at the desired (lower) temperature; sufficient carburizing time was allowed that the carbon content became substantially uniform, as illustrated by Curve A, Fig. 1. The sample was then partially decarburized with a hydrogen-water vapor mixture, giving a carbon distribution as schematically illustrated by Curve B. The sample was then held in a helium atmosphere at the temperature at which the solubility was to be determined until the decarburized portion of the sample came to equilibrium with that containing cementite. Curve C of Fig. 1 represents schematically the final carbon distribution; the horizontal portion corresponds to the carbon content of austenite saturated with cementite. To bring the sample to room temperature without change in the carbon distribution and in machinable condition, it was first quenched in a salt pot at 480°C, then in water at room temperature. Relationships are derived between average dimensions measured on a polished cross section and the spatial dimensions of particles dispersed as uniform cylinders. The equations are applicable to the measurement of rods or plates without the stipulation that they be extremely thin. QUANTITATIVE analysis of the elements of mi-crostructures has been limited by a lack of knowledge concerning the relationships between observations on plane surfaces and the spatial nature of the structure. This paper is an extension of previous efforts to establish equations suitable for the quantitative investigation of microstructures. The equations derived fill two gaps in the range of particle shapes for which measurements may be required, namely those shapes lying between extremely thin plates and equiaxed particles (approximately spherical), and those intermediate between equiaxed particles and extremely thin rods or needles. In a previous paper' equations were developed relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the average spatial dimensions of particles in the form of spheres, extremely thin plates, and extremely thin rods. For extremely thin rods the dimensions measured on a polished cross section were found to depend on the radius only, so that no information concerning the rod lengths or number of rods per unit volume could be obtained from observations on a cross section. In this paper equations are derived relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the spatial dimensions of particles in the form of identical cylinders. These equations may be used to evaluate the dimensions of rods, as well as the dimensions of plates, without the stipulation that the plates or rods be extremely thin. The impossibility of evaluating the length of extremely thin rods from planar measurements appears as an increase in the amount of data required for a given precision, as the length-radius ratio increases. Consider a sample containing particles of a phase in the form of cylinders of uniform radius T and height t. If the cylinders are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained poly-crystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the cylinders are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientations of the cross-sectional planes and traverse lines. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of particles N, cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of particles N, per unit volume times the probability p1 of a plane intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented cylinder in the cube. Let J be the maximum cylinder dimension in the direction normal to the cross-section planes, as shown in Fig. 1. Activity in the oil fields of the state was at a low ebb during the year because of the longest period of low prices that has yet prevailed, which has been detrimental to both the eastern and western sections of the state. Production for the state as a whole shows a drop of 209,192 bbl. during 1939, the total being 5,356,963 bbl. The loss is in the production of the western division, where a loss of approximately 300,000 bbl. more than offset a gain of approximately 100,000 bbl. in the eastern division. The loss in the western division can be attributed to decline in drilling activity due to the low prices prevailing, which were caused by flooding of the normal markcts with cheap Illinois crude. The gain in the eastern division is the result of repressuring operations begun in previous years and now showing results, and not to any renewed drilling activity. Gas development in western Kentucky during 1939 was of minor importance. In eastern Kentucky approximately 50 producing gas wells were drilled, which were sufficient for present market with excess reserves already developed. With the severe winter and additional industry load every gas well connected has been on line for the past three months. Although all demands are being met, development will be greatly increased during 1940 to meet depletion. From the geological point of view, the drilling activity in the western division developed additional information of benefit. Several wells on blocks of acreage assembled in previous years were drilled in the deeper parts of the Western Coal Basin—southern part of the Illinois Basin— giving for the first time accurate information about the Pennsylvanian and lower formations down to and through the Devonian.

YEARS of experience and research have shown that molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium are among the most useful and effective elements in augmenting the high-temperature strength of heat-treatable, ferritic steels. Grün, for example, in conducting an early survey of the strengthening effects of various elements in annealed, low-carbon steel at 750° and 930°F (400° and 500°C), found molybdenum and vanadium to be the most effective.' Holtmann comprehensively studied the strengthening effects of molybdenum and vanadium in quenched and tempered steels at 930°F as a function of microstructure and carbon content.' He found creep strength to be related to the saturation of the austenite at the austenitizing temperature, such that strength is increased by alloying until the y loop is reached—the terminus of complete austenitization. Beyond this degree of alloying, the inability to heat treat will result in lower strength, at least for low and moderate creep temperatures. Tungsten, owing to higher cost than molybdenum, has been little used in ferritic high-temperature steels. As a result, very few investigations have been made of its high-temperature strengthening ability, and reliable data on its effectiveness are not available. Grün rated tungsten far less effective than molybdenum at 930°F (500°C) on a weight-percentage basis.' However, Tammann has found that tungsten is as effective as molybdenum in raising the recrystallization temperature of iron. For this reason Smith, in a review of the subject, has advocated a re-examination of the influence of tungsten on the high-temperature strength of steel.' In any study of the effects of alloying additions on high-temperature properties, recognition must be made of the many variables involved, some of which can be controlled but have been ignored in innumerable investigations of the past, and some of which are difficult or even impossible to control. One cannot, for example, assign a definite strengthening index to any one alloying element, for this will be dependent upon the microstructure (heat treatment and mechanical treatment), testing con- ditions (temperature, time, and stress), and the complete composition of the steel (accompanying alloying elements, impurities, etc.). One ever-appear ing variable, hardness or tensile strength at room temperature, may be eliminated by heat treating all of the alloys to a single hardness level. An attempt may be made to control the variable of primary quenched structure by oil or water quenching the test specimen. The control of such variables may not be possible in cases of widely varying compositions, but at least such deviations should be recognized. Material and Procedure The alloys, made as 30-lb ingots in an induction furnace, all had the same base composition of about 0.18 pct C, 0.85 pct Mn, and 0.48 pct Si. They were grouped as follows: Mo Group—Containing up to 5.2 pct Mo. W Group-Containing up to 6.0 pct W. V Group—Containing up to 3.3 pct V. Mo-V Group—Containing up to 2.7 pct Mo and up to 1.4 pct V. Mo-W Group—Containing up to 2.5 pct Mo and up to 2.5 pct W. The steels, listed in Table I, were forged to ¾ in. sq bars and the material for the high-temperature, rupture-test specimens was further swaged to %-in. round bars.

The key to disagreements between Blackburn's findings and mine is the word equilibrium". My work attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of the titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system. It can readily be shown that Blackburn's conclusions are based primarily on the examination of structures substantially removed from equilibrium. The diagram presented in Fig. 16 is properly labeled a "phase diagram". However, it appears that Blackburn either does not understand or does not accept the difference between "phase diagram" and "equilibrium diagram" as defined in the Metals Handbook.17 The conflict lies not in Blackburn's data but in his interpretation of it, and his use of "transformation", "phase diagram", and "equilibrium diagram" as synonymous terms. I share his view that the light microscope is much inferior to the transmission electron microscope for the study of transformations; but this fact does not render the light microscope useless or untrustworthy. The difficulties experienced with the Ti-A1 system have not been due to the limitations of the light microscope, but rather to the extreme sluggishness in achieving equilibrium at temperatures below 1000° C. Were it not for the light microscope employed with polarized light, the twin phase syndrome' might still be unrecognized and, as a consequence, still adding to the confusion of Ti-A1 investigations. (Ref. 1 should read ... Contract No. N161-25952 ... vol. 236.) Other, more sophisticated techniques, including electron transmission, simply confirm the erroneous tentative conclusions drawn from observations of structures due to the twin-phase syndrome. By the standards of most of the investigations of the Ti-A1 systems, seven of the fifteen compositions investigated by Blackburn were seriously contaminated with oxygen. The writer has found that 0.1 wt pct 0 shifts the a + Ti3A1 boundary to 1 at. pct lower A1 content at 700°C. At constant aluminum content, this corresponds to a temperature shift of the boundary of +25°c.18 Blackburn advises that the first group of alloys contained 0.1 to 0.15 wt pct 0, bur he does say whether the analyses were performed on as-received material or on specimens in their final state of heat treatment. This is especially important considering the 20-mil-thick starting materials. If specimens had been annealed in the two-phase a + 6 region it would have provided an indication of the final degree of oxygen contamination since up to about 12 at. pct A1 the boundaries of this region are well-defined for low-oxygen alloys. Blackburn questions the capability of light microscopy in determining phase boundaries in the Ti-A1 system. I submit that the a/a + Ti3A1 boundary in Fig. 1 of Ref. 1 over the composition range from 10 to 18 at. pct A1 was determined by dilatometry and supported by electron diffraction. Specimens of alloys containing 8, 10, 12, and 14 at. pct A1 were aged at 550°C for 1000 hr (under stress of 5000 psi to accelerate the tendency to equilibrium) and then fractured in tension at room temperature. Collodion was applied to the as-fractured (unetched) surface and, when stripped, carried away particles identified by electron diffraction as Ti3A1. INTRODUCTION During the past 40 years, there has been in the United States of America and other industrialised Western countries a distinct displacement in the procurement of minerals from domestic sources towards an increased dependence on imported minerals. This was caused in part by one or each of the following: a lack of local supply of particular minerals, domestic source depletion or exhaustion and the relative ease and inexpensiveness of obtaining minerals from comparatively unexploited sources in underdeveloped and some developing countries, notably in the Middle East, South America, Southern Africa, and Australasia. Governments of the industrialised nations, concerned about the reliance of their economies on imported raw minerals examined both the degree of reliability and the extent of mineral resources in the countries and regions supplying the essential minerals. This brought a painful awareness of the vulnerability of industrialised countries as a result of the possible interruption of their mineral imports. In this regard, the United States of America may be quoted as a case in point: a report by a House of Representatives Subcommittee on Mines and Mining (Santini Subcommittee)1 revealed that the United States in 1980 was dependent on foreign sources for more than 50 per cent for 24 of the 32 minerals essential for national survival. The Subcommittee also acknowledged that although the United States may develop its own alternative energy sources, there are in many cases no substitutes for the strategic + minerals imported from foreign sources, from countries which are often unstable at best, hostile at worst. This resulted in various policy responses as well as contingency measures, amongst other, renewed emphasis on the utilisation of domestic mineral resources, an intensified search for substitutes of critical minerals and increased stockpiling programmes. Increased attention was devoted to analyses of the political and economic conditions prevailing in the regions from which strategic and other minerals are exported to the industrialised countries, and the formulation of policy measures vis-a-vis those regions. One region which attracted a considerable degree of attention has been Southern Africa, and in particular South Africa.2 The Santini Subcommittee affirmed that while the bulk of the minerals imported by the United States is supplied by a number of source countries, a host of critical[t] minerals vital to the well-being of that country (and this includes all the Western industrialised countries) originates from Southern Africa, a region, deservedly referred to as the "Persian Gulf of Minerals". Apart from the Republic of South Africa the mineral-rich countries concerned are Angola (diamonds, iron ore, oil), Botswana (diamonds, coal), South West Africa/Namibia (diamonds, uranium), Zambia (copper, cobalt), Zaire (industrial diamonds, copper, cobalt) and Zimbabwe (gold, nickel, chromium, asbestos). The Subcommittee however noted that, with the exception of cobalt, the greatest portion of the reserves of the critical minerals listed, lies within the borders of South Africa. SOUTH AFRICA A RELIABLE PURVEYOR OF MINERALS In view of the continual instability and political risk, along with the nationalisation of mineral industries in third world countries, importing industrialised nations have in recent years become more and more concerned about security of long-term supply, and have in consequence begun to diversify their mineral enquiries to areas where the following conditions prevail: • Long-standing record of consistency of supply; • An economic system of private enterprise; • Political stability; • A well integrated infrastructure, with a maintenance of transportation and development costs at realistic levels, and • Attractive investment opportunities, with security of the return of profits.

A method is presented by which the displacement efficiency of a steam-injection process may be determined. The method consists of a determination of the position of the steam front at a particular time and the application of the Buckley-Leverett theory to the hot and cold regions of the reservoir with the appropriate hot or cold fluid properties. A uniform, linear flow system is assumed for this study. The method is applied to a number of reservoir conditions. The primary properties which affect the results of a steam-injection process are the oil viscosities at steam and reservoir temperatures, injection rate, pay thickness and oil saturation. The efficiency of steam injection is compared with that of water injection for a 10-acre, linearly flooded reservoir. In reservoirs where the oil viscosity is about 35 times the water viscosity, the steam process yields recoveries about 20 per cent higher than the water flood. Where the oil viscosity is near 500 cp, the steam process may recover from three to four times as much oil as a water flood. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper,' a method was suggested for evaluating a steam-injection process. Emphasis was placed upon the determination of the steam-front position in the reservoir at various times. In the present paper, the displacement process is studied in more detail. The approach is essentially that employed by Jordan, Rayne and Marshall3 in their study of hot-water injection. The steam-injection process is quite complex, and an exact description of the process has not been found; however, a qualitative description can be made. When a quantity of steam is injected into a relatively cold reservoir, the leading edge of the steam front continaally flows into cool sand, and some steam condenses. As more and more steam condenses, a bank of condensed water will form which is augmented by displaced connate water. The reservoir may be divided in three regions—(1) a region containing displaced fluids at reservoir temperatures, (2) a region contain- ing water at reservoir temperature and (3) a region occupied by steam. The reasons for the lack of a region of hot water or oil of any appreciable size have been discussed.' A method has been presented by which the location of the steam front can be determined even when heat losses to the regions surrounding the reservoir are sizable compared with the amount of heat injected. It remains to show the effectiveness of steam injection in increasing the ultimate oil recovery. To illustrate the technique for determining the increase in displacement efficiency and, hence, the increase in ultimate production, two sets of hypothetical reservoir conditions will be studied in detail.
