Some 30,000 people attended from 50 countries. Over 600 exhibitors brought with them a billion dollars of mining technology, ranging from tiny high-precision valves to giant off-highway trucks. Twenty-seven technical sessions with more than 100 papers covered the gamut of mining advancements. It was a grand display of industry vitality just to power the huge exhibit area required 22,000 kW of electricity each day, and support services for the exposition created more than 1000 daily jobs for local labor. Unquestionably, Las Vagas knew the miners were in town for the American Mining Congress' International Mlining Show.

During the past three decades an ever increasing number of uses for underground storage space has been developed. In some instances, the value of the space created has been so great that the host rock has been wasted. The preferential use of salt to host underground cavities is based on numerous factors, the primary two being low extraction costs and low permeability. Both dry and solution mined cavities have been created for the storage of a variety of materials. As the demand for underground storage and disposal grows, so must our selectivity of the materials to be stored.

Previous results have shown that Pyromet 860, an Fe-Ni-base heat-resistant alloy, is stable at temperatures as high as 1500°F for aging times as long as 100 hr. This Paper describes the results of long-time creep-rupture testing at 1050" to 1400°F at various stress levels. Times as long as 37,660 hr were employed. The effects of time, temperature, and stress on the precipitates and their morphologies were studied by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction, and microprobe techniques. phase, containing cobalt, nickel, and molybdenum, was detected after extended exposures from 1200" to 1400°F and careful study was performed to describe the kinetics of its formation in this alloy. µ phase formation apparently has little effect on the elevated-tem-perature properties of Pyromet 860. For times as long as 500 hr at 1300°F and below, with µ phase present, m significant effects on ambient temperature properties were noted. For longer times at 1300°F and after 1400°F exposure, the effects of u phase on ambient temperature tensile strength properties are not clear due to y' effects and grain boundary reactions. Electron-vacancy, N,, numbers were calculated using different methods described in literature and correlated with the present findings. In the selection of alloys for use in gas turbine applications, structural stability ranks as a primary criterion. High-temperature strength and cost are also of major concern. With these factors in mind, Pyromet 860 alloy, an Fe-Ni-base superalloy was designed. This alloy combines the cost advantages of Fe-Ni-base alloys such as A-286, 901, and V-57 with improved strength and structural stability'1,2 and no tendency to form the embrittling cellular 77 phase. A previous study3 reported on the stability of Pyro-met 860 at temperatures from 1375" to 157 5°F and times up to 100 hr. That study showed that the y' precipitates increased in size and separation and decreased in number with an increase in time or aging temperature. No deleterious phases were found to occur. In the present work, samples from four production heats were subjected to long-time creep-rupture testing at 1050" to 1400°F at various stress levels. Various heat treatments were used on the starting samples and tests were run up to 37,660 hr. The effects of time, temperature, and stress on the precipitates and their morphologies were studied by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffrac- tion, and microprobe techniques. Electron vacancy numbers, Nv , calculations were made by TRW.4 Experimental results are correlated with the Nv data used to predict occurrence of intermetallic phases such as a phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mechanical Tests. Material for the present study came from four production size heats of Pyromet 860 alloy, weighing from about 3000 to about 10,000 lb. All of these heats were made by vacuum induction melting plus consumable electrode vacuum remelting. The nominal analysis for this alloy is compared with the actual analysis of the four heats in Table I. Sections of these heats were forged to 9/16-in. round bar,3/4-in. square bar, 3-in. round bar, 4-in. square bar, and a gas turbine blade forging about 16 in, long, about 6 in. wide, and weighing about 20 lb. In general, all forging of this alloy is done from a 2050°F furnace temperature. Longitudinal test blanks were cut from the centers of the smaller bars, from mid-radius positions for the 3- and 4-in. bars, and from the air foil of the gas turbine blade and heat-treated according to the procedures outlined in Table 11. Heat treatment A is the "standard treatment" recommended for this alloy for best all-around strength and ductility. Heat treatment B is a modification of treatment A for improved tensile strength at moderate temperatures. The treatment coded C was designed for treating large sections according to a procedure previously described.' Heat treatment D was developed to yield optimum stress relaxation characteristics at 1050°F for a steam turbine bolting application. After heat treatment, the test blanks were machined either to plain bar creep specimens with a gage diameter of 0.252 in., to combination smooth-notched stress-rupture bars with a plain bar diameter of 0.178 in. and a concentration factor of Kt 3.8' at the notched section, or to notch-only specimens. All specimens conformed to ASTM requirements. Metallography. Most of the creep-rupture tests were continued to failure. A few bars were fractured as smooth or notch tensiles after creep-rupture exposures. After fracturing, ordinary metallographic sections were made primarily in gage areas adjacent to fractures to represent a "high-stress" region and through specimen threads to represent a "low-stress" region. All metallographic sections were made in a longitudinal direction with respect to the test specimen axes. For optical microscopy, the samples were etched in glyceregia (15 ml HC1, 5 ml HNO,, 10 ml glycerol). For XRD analysis, the phases were extracted electrolytically in two media: 20 pct &Po4 in H20 for selective extraction of y' and 10 pct HC1 in methanol for carbides and other phases.

MANY MISUNDERSTANDINGS have arisen regarding -Al the purchase by the Government of 24,000,000 oz. of domestically produced silver annually for the next four years at a price of 64 1/2c. to the producer. Some editorials have an¬nounced rather sarcastically that be¬cause of the strong western silver bloc in Congress, the Administration is paying a bonus of approximately $22,000,000 to a few large silver produc¬ers of the West, the amount being figured on the total purchase of about 100,000,000 oz. and the difference between the Government price and the world price for silver. Actually the Government will make a profit on this purchase, due to seigniorage, of something over $60,000,000. The 96,000,000 oz. of silver, for which the producers will receive approximately $62,000,000, will be produced in association with at least $100,000,000 worth of lead, zinc, copper and gold; the greater part of this $162,000,000 worth of metal will be produced at little profit to the mining companies, as will be shown later, because of the low prices for lead, copper and zinc. This amount of money will be spent largely for labor and supplies, thus greatly relieving the national burden of unemployment. Certainly, western mining, in the purchase of this silver, is not victimizing the Federal Government.

IN his well-known work,1 published in 1867, P. Ritter von Rittinger gives the following formula for the velocity of a particle settling in still water: v=C/D(a -1) and for average grains he assigns to the constant C a value of 2.44. As is well known, the value of C depends on the shape of the grains resulting from crushing, and it is obvious that values obtained for coal particles will not only be very different from those for ore particles but will even be characteristic of coal from a certain seam. The only way of finding an accurate value of C, applicable to conditions in Russia, where all coal-washing plants are built on German principles, is to conduct a series of tests of which the results will determine what value of C is to be used. In the investigation outlined in this paper the theories of Prof. Robert H. Richards2 were taken as the basis of the tests; the slimes were removed from the charges to eliminate the trouble of handling them; and to obtain accurate results free from errors inevitably resulting from human observation, photographic apparatus was used and a series of pictures taken which form the basis for constructing a suitable diagram of velocity vs. time.3

Weiss Transit and Level The illustrations shown are the transits and levels manufactured by the Weiss Instrument Co. of Denver, Colo:, and they state that city and mining engineers are securing satisfactory results. It is claimed that their patented prismatic telescope gives increased illumination with an astronomical eye-piece. The prisms are set in a milled seat for this purpose, and cemented in so they can never come loose or out of adjustment. All adjustment for collimation is clone with the cross-hairs. This telescope is 8 in. long for magnifying power of 20 diameters against 12 in. for regular old style. The field is 1° 45' with a clear aperture of 1 1/8 in. The principal advantage claimed for this type is the arrangement by means. of which vertical' sights can be had without an additional telescope.. ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

Engineering research consists, broadly speaking, in the investigation of the effect of the variations in a number of factors on some property of a product or characteristic of a process. The unambiguous description of the product or process requires that the property or characteristic be expressible in quantitative terms. For the purpose of practical control, it is likewise desirable that the independently variable factors governing the product or process be quantities, although this ideal goal is not always attained. Maximum efficiency—i.e., the attain- ment of the maximum amount of reliable, useful information relating to the influence of, the factors on the property of the product or characteristic of the process, for the least expense—is an important requirement for the satisfactory operation of a research organization. Obviously, a necessary condition for the attainment of maximum efficiency is an adequate knowledge of the specialized field in which the experimental research lies. While necessary, this condition is not sufficient. Proper attention must also be given to the general principles of experimental design together with the modern methods for the analysis and evaluation of experimental data. The Present discussion is confined to a single design, the so-called "factorial" design. This design is of special interest in that it attains its goal, maximum efficiency, by directly departing from the

In searching for an explanation for the obvious difference between the copper and the brass type of rolling texture, it is common practice to look for correlations with other properties. For example, there are obvious differences between copper and brass in the critical resolved shear stress, the extent of easy glide or stage I, and the amount of "overshooting)) during single-crystal deformation.' Also, the slip lines in copper are fine and wavy while those in brass are more coarse and better described as slip bands.' Since neutron irradiation is known to make these properties in copper change in such a way as to resemble brass,2'3 an excellent test for these possible correlations is to see whether neutron irradiation produces a corresponding change in the texture, i.e., whether irradiated copper develops a brass-type rolling texture. The experiment would also answer the more important question of whether or not lattice defects like those introduced by neutron irradiation have any effect on the development of rolling textures in fcc metals. Experimental studies using conventional X-ray pole figure techniques are inconvenient because the X-ray detection system must be modified to discriminate against the radioactivity which is induced in the specimen by the necessarily long exposure to neutrons. BlANKS 8 in. long were cut from the as-received bar stock and austenitized at 1560° F for 1 hr, oil quenched, tempered at 1140°F for 1 hr, and water quenched. The heat-treated blanks were machined into tensile specimens which were subsequently used for the straining operation. Some of the tensile specimens were temper embrittled at 900°F for 24 hr and air cooled prior to or following the straining operation. The specimens were strained in tension up to 5 pct total strain (elastic plus plastic) either at room temperature or at 900°F. The reduced sec- tion of the tensile specimen employed was 5 in. long and 0.600 in. in diam. This size specimen was sufficiently large to permit two standard Charpy impact bars to be machined from it. One group of specimens was temper embrittled at 900°F for 24 hr under stress of about 20,000 psi applied with a hydraulic tensile testing machine. Approximately 0.34 pct plastic strain occurred during this treatment. A comparison of series "A" and "B" data in Table I at 0 pct strain, reveals that the steel was rather highly susceptible to temper embrittlement, the embrittling treatment causing the transition temperature to rise 165°F. INTRODUCTION The mines of western central Mexico historically contributed a profusion of gold and silver for the treasury of Spain and later provided sources for financing the Mexican War for Independence and the Mexican Revolution. The western coastal and barranca (cliff) tribes were hunters and extremely hostile, and the Spaniards were not able to penetrate many of the rich districts of their rugged homeland until the mid-1700's. This was more than 200 years after Cortez began the Inquisition by defeating the Aztecs and their allies in a decisive battle in the great city of Tenochtitlan (present day Mexico City). The Spaniards had a voracious appetite for silver and gold, and it was inevitable that they would finally subdue the natives and commence mining activities. Described in this paper are some of the precious metal mining activities in the southern half of the State of Sinaloa and the western half of the State of Durango (Figure l), and specifically those mining activities in the area controlled by the company with which the author was associated for 14 years, Minas de San Luis, S. THE partial excess entropy of interstitial solutes in metals, SXS , has usually been interpreted as being principally vibrational ever since the initial statistical treatment of hydrogen in metals by Fowler and Smith-ells. The vibrational entropy is considered being due to the optical modes of the light interstitial atom. Little attention has been given to the magnitudes of the values of SXS'. Leiser and Witte2 and Ebisuzaki and O'Keeffe3 have noted that for hydrogen in metals Si is approximately constant for different metals. On the other hand if it is assumed that the interstitial solute is an isotopic defect then, as shown by McLellan, SXS should vary from metal to metal as follows: where S is the standard entropy of the solvent and Mi, M, are the masses of the interstitial and solvent atoms. respectively. Fair agreement with this equation was found for oxygen in silver and nitrogen in iron4 and for carbon in iron.= Ln a subsequent analysis of metal- hdrogen systems McLellan' found a variation of $' from metal to metal but not in a manner expected from the isotopic impurity equation. INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups, that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mrn) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh ( <0.60 mm) ; in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < in. ( < 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1-2 1/2 in. (25-63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6x1 1/4 in. (15Ox32mm). It seems probable that the next decades will see much wider application of coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes.
