Graduation from the scientific course of a college, approved by the Committee on Membership,' shall be considered equivalent to two years' employment, as required in the previous sentence, Employment as -a teacher of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, if in direct charge, may be considered a position of responsibility as specified in the second paragraph. Persons employed in research or any scientific literary work or in teaching in the scientific departments of colleges, approved by the Committee on Membership, who at the same time are engaged in consulting or in the active practice of mining, geology, or metallurgy, shall be entitled to consider the time so spent in active practice as equivalent to an equal length of time of employment in positions of responsibility, provided the work done or the positions held seem to the Committee on Membership to warrant the equivalency. The requirement of three years' employment in positions of responsibility may be waived by the Committee on Membership in the case of persons who have done notable original work in mining, geology, or metallurgy, or have won distinction by research or investigations, in one or more of these subjects.

The Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO+ CO = Zn + CO2 [1] C + CO2 = 2 CO [2] Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and CO2 , respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2 O [31 C + H2O = CO + Ha [4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between IIOO° and I3oo°C., . . . the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier's statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented. *

Discussion of the paper of W. R. Shimer and F. O. Kichline, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 81, September, 1913, pp. 2361 to 2377. ALLERTON S. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I have been much interested in Mr. Shimer's valuable contribution. The apparent fact that the oxides of certain metals which are not reduced by hydrogen per se, are reducible when the oxides are dissolved in iron in small quantity, is brought out for the first time, and is worthy of the careful attention of investigators. The Ledebur method has been subjected to considerable criticism, owing to the alleged fact that it did not measure the oxygen combined with impurities. Personally I have found the method extremely helpful in spite of the minute quantities of oxygen with which it deals. Mr. Shinier points out that the highest oxygen he obtained by over-blowing was 0.074 per cent., while the minimum quantity in a properly finished steel was in the neighborhood of 0.02 per cent. The Ledebur method is used as a constant check on the quality of heats made in practice under my direction. In dealing with a very pure commercial iron, we should expect to find and would find difficulty in galvanizing sheets made from a heat running 0.07 per cent. oxygen. In fact, we do not like to have the oxygen rise above 0.03 per cent. I am inclined to agree with the author that excessive oxygen leaves a bath of metal in a very short time, but nevertheless I believe it takes only a very little combined oxygen to begin to make its presence felt in the pickling and galvanizing department, when sheet metal is the product manufactured. As Mr. Shimer points out, the higher the carbon, the lower the oxygen danger, and it is partly for this reason that the manufacture of carbon-free metal in the open-hearth furnace has to be so very carefully watched and controlled from the furnace through to the finished product. It is quite possible that, there is a critical temperature of dissociation between iron and oxygen, although the critical points may vary in baths of different carbon content. Unfortunately, the accurate determination of the temperature of a molten bath at the time of pouring or teeming is a very difficult matter. This paper presents a theory for estimating the rate of gravity drainage of a liquid out of a sand column. Account is taken of the variation in permeability to the liquid as the saturation in the upper part of the sand becomes less than 100 pct. The theory is confirmed by previously published experimental data. Introduction Petroleum engineers have expressed the need for 4 theory of gravity drainage. Brunner,' in particular, has pointed out that some type of mathematical theory is necessary to begin the application of laboratory data to field problems. Muskat and his associates2'3-4 have recently made contributions to the theory of gas-drive behavior and have indicated an intention to apply their methods to water-drive systems. No theory of gravity drainage rates has been developed, however, and it seems desirable to formulate one at this time. Differential Equations of Capillary Flow The flow of liquids in partially saturated porous media has been studied by many investigators.6-10 Richards6 presented derivations of fundamental differential equa- tions governing two-phase capillary flow; and used simplified forms of those equations in solving a steady-state problem. Muskat and Meres6 presented and used equations different from those of Richards. Their equations did not explicitly involve capillary pressure gradients; but included, on the other hand, terms expressing the effects of the evolution of gas from the liquid phase during flow. Leverett8 stated in 1940 that "previous work on the flow of fluid mixtures in porous solids [had] failed adequately to account for all of the three influences that cause motion of the fluids: capillarity, gravity, and impressed external pressure differentials." Leverett's basic equations, however, were specialized forms of the general equations of Richards,5 which had actually taken account of the three influences mentioned by Leverett, but had not been used in a problem involving all three. The fact is that our knowledge of capillary flow and our ability to express this knowledge in differential equations exceed our ability to solve the equations except in a few cases. General differential equations have usually been of little more than formal value. In solving practical problems, it has been necessary to develop specific equations, preserving terms that involved the factors important in those problems, and purposefully neglecting other terms that were not of predominating influence. This is the method followed here. It is believed that the solution of the particular problem and the scheme of the solution itself are new.

Anthropological diggings have revealed that the American Indians carried on intertribal trade in flint, obsidian, ochre, and other mineral commodities, indicating that mining was practiced before the arrival of the white man from Europe Carbon datings from the native copper pits on Isle Royal and Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, have yielded dates as early as 5555 BC for this mining. As early as Pliocene time, Eolithic-man fashioned artifacts of stones probably found on the surface, but by late Quaternary, Neolithic man was sinking shafts and mining underground for flint. Because placer gold was easily recognized and easily worked, it was used for ornamental purposes by nearly all cultures before other metals were discovered The Chaldeans hammered copper objects approximately 4500 BC and copper was used in India and China about 3000 BC. An ancient trail from the Nile to the Sinai led to the mines of copper and turquoise Paintings and bas-reliefs of Egyptian tombs dating around 3000 BC depict maps, mining, and smelting in this area. It is interesting that despite this widespread and long history of mining, Agricola records that the first mining laws were developed by the Greeks at Laurium about 700 BC. All of the base metals are known to have been produced in small quantities during the Colonial period in America, but perhaps the first commercial production was the iron ore shipped from Virginia to England in 1608, followed by lead in 1621. Among the earliest companies formed in America that still survive (according to the standard reference yearbooks), were: the Jackson Mining Co., predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range, Michigan, in 1844; the Sussex Zinc and Copper Mining & Manufacturing Co., fore-runner of New Jersey Zinc Co. in 1848 (although the Franklin-Sterling body was discovered in 1640); the five companies, Pittsburg and Boston, Quincy Mining, Pewabic, Huron Mining, and Minesota all formed in the decade (1844-1855) that followed the rediscovery of Keweenaw copper, were combined into Calumet and Hecla; and Vermont Copper Mining Co. in 1853 Although southeast Wisconsin lead-zinc was discovered in 1690, Mine La Motte in southeast Missouri in 1720, placer gold in California in 1848, Comstock Lode in 1859, Leadville in 1860, Cripple Creek in 1891, no surviving companies of those early mining periods exist. The first strong producer in the Mississippi Valley was St. Joseph Lead in 1864; Homestake and Pickands-Mather, were formed in 1877, Phelps-Dodge in 1881; Pittsburgh Reduction, the predecessor of Al-

Up to the present time, according to Hansen1 and Haughton,2 the constitution of the bismuth-indium system has not yet been published. The generally accepted value for the melting point of indium, as listed in most scientific journals and textbooks, is 155°C. Recently, however, H. M. Davis3 has determined a new melting point for indium of 257.3°C ± 0.1°C. Since bismuth has been used in preponderance as an alloying element in the majority of low-melting alloys, and indium has been used with considerable success in lowering the melting points of low-melting alloys,4,5 an interest has been developed in the application of these two metals, making a complete knowledge of the constitution of its alloys desirable. In this investigation, the melting point of indium reported by H. M. Davis has been found to be substantially correct. A value of 157.2°C ± 0.5°C was determined. The two eutectic compositions have been placed at 34 and 50 pct bismuth with their respective eutectic temperatures as 72.4'C ± 0.5°C and 90°C ± 0.5°C. The bismuth-indium phase diagram has been determined by thermal and microscopic analysis and is shown in Fig I. THERMAL ANALYSIS Granulated bismuth and indium shot, having a guaranteed purity of 99.99 and 99.95 pct, respectively, were melted in a carbon crucible by means of a laboratory heater. To minimize oxidation of the alloys, a heavy mineral oil (Nujol) having a high flash point was used. A platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple 0f fine wire encased in a thin-walled Pyrex glass tube, about 1/8 in. in diameter, was connected to a type K potentiometer for temperature measurements. The thermo-couple was calibrated against the melting points of tin, bismuth, and the silver-copper eutectic and the boiling point of water. Since the temperature readings could be reproduced to 0.2°C, and the accuracy of the temperature standards in this range is slightly better than 0.5°C, it seems reasonable to assume that the temperature readings are reliable to approximately 0.5°C. The cooling rate could be controlled by varying the amount of insulation surrounding the crucible. Three or four layers of asbestos paper, 1/16r, in. thick, sufficed to give a cooling rate of from 1° to 2°C per minute. Undercooling was slightly noticeable. This condition was minimized by vigorous stirring, since the advantage of using slower rates was too small to justify the greater expenditure

Discussion of the papers of Messrs. Howe and Levy, Burgess, Crowe and Rawdon, and H. M. Howe, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 78, June, 1913, pp. 1075 to 1136. ALFRED STANSFIELD, Montreal, Canada :-In Professor Howe's paper on the position of Ae3, he shows its industrial importance in determining the temperature to which steel should be heated. for "grain refining." Several years ago I carried out a research on the " burning " of steel and found that while hypo-eutectoid steel should be heated to Ae3, hyper-eutectoid steel that has been very much overheated must be reheated to the curve Sa on the carbon-iron diagram, in order to redissolve the pro-eutectoid cementite and thus, to obtain recrystallization and grain-refining. This treatment was necessarily only partly successful, and I should like to ask whether the conditions of heat treatment for refining overheated high-carbon steels have been ascertained. Speaking of the " Persistence of Solidificational Segregation " Professor Howe quotes an experiment made by Mr. Stead in which a bar of 1.2 per cent. carbon steel was immersed in a large mass of molten blast-furnace slag and allowed to cool with it. The steel was heated above the solidus (curve Aa on the carbon-iron diagram), but below the liquidus (curve AB). A drop of eutectic carbon-iron alloy, rich in carbon, had liquated out and hung below the bar. This agrees exactly with my own observations on the burning of steel, but my interpretation differs somewhat from that of Professor Howe. Professor Howe considers that the fusion of a part of the metal (rich in carbon) shows that the solidificational irregularities of composition had persisted through the rolling and heat treatment of the steel, as otherwise no part of the steel would have been sufficiently fusible to melt. It does not appear to me that such an explanation is necessary. A piece of steel represented in temperature and composition by any point within the area ABa will ultimately resolve itself into a solid phase and a liquid phase in equilibrium with each other. It may appear that if the steel were absolutely uniform no fusion could take place, but the smallest nucleus of high-carbon, fusible alloy would ultimately bring about this separation into liquid and solid phases, by diffusion of the carbon from the solid to the liquid areas. A nucleus sufficient for the purpose might be provided by an area of pro-eutectoid cementite which had not become diffused during the

INTRODUCTION A BRIEF elemental discussion of the fundamental factors involved in diamond drilling often fills a need, particularly when a mine operator is contemplating for the first time an exploratory drilling campaign. Mr. James A. Barr, of the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute, has suggested that many engineers must undertake a drilling program of one kind or another and, in the case of diamond drilling, sometimes even are at a loss as to how to start correspondence. The Bureau of Mines has acquired much experience in managing exploratory diamond-drilling activities. Its activities in diamond drilling included exploring for potash in Texas, Utah and New Mexico 1-4 during the 1920's. The Strategic Minerals Exploration program was started in 1939 and was materially expanded during the war to include critical and essential minerals. At the peak of its war-time activity more than 200 engineers were employed, a majority of whom supervised diamond drilling. Many of them had little experience with such work prior to their employment with the Bureau, and it was necessary to instruct them in their duties. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the fundamentals of exploratory diamond drilling from the viewpoint of management in such a way that they will serve as a basis on which those beginning exploratory diamond drilling may build an experience and acquire ability to direct exploration as they gain that experience. SELECTION OF METHOD OF DRILLING Selection of the method of drilling is governed by the type of material to be penetrated and by the type of sample needed to determine the quality and importance of a deposit. Types of drills that might be used for a given job include diamond drills, churn drills, hand auger drills, power auger drills, bucket drills, and rotary drills (sometimes called "seismograph rigs"). Each type has a specific field in which it is most useful. While the Bureau of Mines utilized all the types of drilling mentioned, diamond drilling was used on a majority of its exploratory projects. FACTORS GOVERNING SELECTION OF DIAMOND DRILLING The prime consideration in selecting a method of drilling is first to determine what results are desired and then to choose a method that will furnish reliable data in the ground to be penetrated. Use of diamond drills permits recovery of a core as well as sludge at a comparatively low cost. The core provides an excellent means of studying the formation being drilled and furnishes much information that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. Diamond drills will recover a satis-

The concept of "a continuous succession of steady-states", which has been applied successfully by Aromfsky and Jenkins to obtain a solution for the nonlinear partial differential equation describing the transient Darcy flow of gas through porous media, is demonstrated to be equally valid for transient non-Darcy flow. A mathematical model, which numerically solves the partial differential equation, is used to check the validity of the succession of steady-states solution. Comparison of sand-face pressure histories compelted by the two methods shows excellent agreement. The utility of the succession of steady-states solution in predicting performance of gas wells rests in the fact that no special computation equipment is required. The development of the succession of steady-states solution leads also to a practical method for determining and analyzing field test data. A method for taking gas-well test data under constant-rate conditions is presented. Experimental data obtained in the field by employing the constant-rate method are presented and analyzed in accordance with the succession of steady-states solution. Analysis of data in this fashion is demonstrated to give direct "in situ" information for reservoir permeability, porosity and turbulence or non-Darcy coefficient. INTRODUCTION The economics of gas production are dependent upon the transient behavior of flow within the reservoir. For production from a finite reservoir, the transient flow behavior can be subdivided into two parts. At first, the transient caused by the movement of the pressure "wave" into the reservoir is of importance. Later in the production history, the pressure-wave movement ceases and the second transient stage of material depletion becomes controlling. For reservoirs of relatively high permeability, it can be shown that the pressure wave moves into the reservoir and stabilizes quite rapidly. In the case of relatively impermeable reservoirs, quite the opposite is true. Although it is theoretically possible to compute the production capability of a well from the properties of the reservoir as determined by static tests and core analyses, more reliable information is obtained by conducting flow tests on the well and thereby obtaining some measure of "in situ" formation properties. For gas wells, there are two basic types of tests in existence: the flow-after-flow method,' and the isochronal method.' Both of these techniques are tailored to obtain data that can be analyzed in accordance with the empirical performance equation: In addition, the isochronal method makes provision for the sluggish nature of pressure-wave movement in "tight" formations by requiring pressure build-up between flows and by stipulating that data obtained on successive flows be analyzed at equal elapsed flow times. It can be demonstrated that either test is valid for reservoirs of high permeability. Further, since it has been pointed out that the pressure wave stabilizes rapidly for reservoirs of this type, tests of relatively short duration will give stabilized information on the performance of a well. Further decline of sand-face pressure and/or production rate may be determined by employing material-balance techniques. Cullender' points out that for relatively impermeable reservoirs the flow-after-flow method gives invalid results. (See Appendix C.) If the isochronal method of testing is used, there are two alternatives: (1) the tests must be conducted for a sufficient length of time to obtain stabilized information (which may require months to accomplish); or (2) some method for extrapolating the results of short-term isochronal tests must be employed. The first alternative is impracticable because of manpower, conservation and economic considerations. Recourse to the second alternative requires some assurance regarding the reliability of the extrapolation technique. Poettmann and SchilsonJ present an empirical method for predicting stabilized performance. The present investigation was originally initiated to determine the reliability of this technique. To do this, a mathematical model was developed to simulate the Darcy and non-Darcy flow of gas through porous media. The model consisted of a finite-difference approximation of the nonlinear partial differential equation which was solved on an IBM 7090 computer. Long-term production histories were simulated by the model and compared against predictions obtained from the Poettmann-Schilson method. As the work progressed, it became apparent that a straightforward predictive equation could be developed by utilizing the concept of a succession of steady-states. As a result, the emphasis of the work was redirected to exploit the advantages of the new method.

IN the zinc smelting industry the year 1947 seems to have been one of putting one's house in order rather than one of any material technical development or radical change in operating conditions. Labor generally has been in better supply but several plants report a scarcity of skilled workmen. Some plants continue to operate on the basis of a six-day week and will probably continue to do so until labor is more plentiful. Only one plant is known to have operated on a curtailed basis because of labor shortage, but here the difficulty was lack of proper housing facilities. Necessary materials and equipment for much-needed maintenance and modernization have been in short supply so these programs have often been delayed. Laborsaving devices of the "Payloader" type have been more generally used for handling materials. Slab zinc production was discontinued during the last months of the year at Danville, 111. and at Langeloth, Pa. Both of these plants used the Hegeler type of furnaces fired with producer gas. INTRODUCTION The impact of taxation differs substantially from state to state in a complex fashion that depends on both the physical characteristics of a mineral deposit and on the price of the mineral commodity relative to its costs of production. A comparative analysis of the tax structures of eight states (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wisconsin) showed wide variations in rates of return for any given type of mineral property, with no state having either the most burdensome or least burdensome tax structure under all circumstances. Three hypothetical mineral operations were analyzed: a producing open-pit copper property, a non-producing underground platinum operation, and a non-producing underground gold operation. None of them corresponds exactly to an existing property. Each of these property types is further defined to have ore feed grades at three different levels, leading to three potential profitability levels, referred to in this paper as "economic", "marginal" and "subeconomic". Thus the differential impact of state tax structures is measured for mineral properties of different types, as well as for different profitability levels. Montana is used as the base case. This study does not address the topic of corporate structures or tax consolidation. There are no costs assumed external to the operation of the deposit (e.g. exploration to locate additional deposits). Two types of analyses were performed for this study. The first calculates the total cumulative tax payments in each state using all applicable taxes (including U.S. federal income taxes and examines the resultant differences in discounted cash-flows rate of returns DCFROR's amoung the eight states. The second is a sensitivity analysis that examines each type of state tax separately (i.e. state income, property, and severance taxes) in order to isolate and examine the differences in tax payments that are due to the difference in rates and methods of computing specific types of taxes in each state. The results of this study serve to illustrate the complex nature of interactions among various taxes. For example, property tax is a deduction in calculating severance tax in some state. Changes in property-tax and severance-tax payments both enter into the calculation of state and federal income-tax liability. This, in turn, could change the timing and usage of tax-loss carry forward amounts and investment tax credits. Additionally, the physical characteristics of a property, the method and costs at which the mineral will be extracted, and the profitability level at which each property operates will affect tax treatment. Each mineral operation was evaluated at three different predetermined profitability levels, referred to using the terms economic, marginal and sub-economic. These three profitability levels are defined by the ore feed grades of the primary commodity that yield in constant terms, approximately an "economic" 18% DCFROR, "a marginal." 10% DCFROR, and a "sub-economic" 5% DCFROR, respectively, under the Montana tax structure. In the analyses, the mining and processing parameters for each of the three types of properties were assumed to be identical for each of the eight states. It was assumed that each operation produces at full operating capacity throughout its life. This implies the level of mineral commodity demand will support the inferred commodity price, such that each operation will be able to sell all its output. The analyses performed for this study were done using a comprehensive economic evaluation simulator that is used in the Bureau of Mines, Division of Minerals Availability MAS program to perform DCFROR analyses. All economic evaluations performed upon these data (see appendix 2) were in constant January 1981 dollars. In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep bandstone in the Elk Basin Field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes. of gas in solution. saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep Reservoir of the Elk Basin Field has unusually varying physiral characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 psia and 490 cu ft of gas in solultion in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure and a saturation pressure of 530 psia and 134 cu ft of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the gas in solution in the oil varies from 18 per cent for oil on the crest to 5 per cent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of the oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered that all the oil in a petroleum reservoir has rather uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas; that such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study by the writers. INTRODUCTION The Rocky Mountain region is one in which may be found striking examples of the unusual in oil and gas accumulations, as is evident from the following: The high helium content (7.6 per cent) of the gas in the Ouray-Leadville limestone sequence in the Rattlesnake Field, New Mexico, and gases of similar helium content in other fields; 50" to 55' API gravity distillate in solution in carbon dioxide gas and recoverable through retrograde condensation, in the North McCallum Field, Colorado; the occurrence of gas, oil, or both in closely related structures contrary to the usual concepts of gravimetric segregation: the accumulation of gas and/or oil in structures closely related to other structures that apparently are more favorable but do not contain oil or gas accumulations; the high hydrogen sulfide content (as high as 42 per cent) of the gas associated with oil in some fields in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming; and the wide range of fluid chararteristics found in the Elk Basin reservoir. Elk Basin, an interesting old oil field that has been producing oil from the Frontier formation since 1915, is situated in a highly eroded basin resulting from the erosion of the crest of an anticline and some of the underlying softer shales. The field came back into national prominence during 1943 when it became known that it was the largest single reserve of new oil discovered in the United States that year. The Tensleep sandstone was found to contain oil in November. 1942, when a well drilled to a depth of 4,538 ft (44 ft into the Tensleep sandstone) flowed oil at the rate of 2,500 B/D. By the end of 1949, 137 oil-producing wells and five dry holes had been drilled, and approximately 32 million bbl of oil had been produced. Approximately 6,000 acres may be considered productive of oil in the Tensleep Reservoir, and estimates of the oil that will be produced average 200 million bbl. The Tensleep Reservoir has further interest because it ha-greater closure than any oil field in the Rocky Mountain region; the closure of the Elk Basin anticline is variously estimated at 5.000 to 10,000 ft. of which the top 2.00 ft of the structure contained oil. SUBSURFACE OIL SAMPLING Fig. 1 is a structural map of the Elk Basin Tensleep Reservoir, on which the nine wells used in this study and the numbers correvponding to the well designations hereafter referred to are shown. Wells 1. 2, 3, 4, and 8 were tested and sampled during October and November. 1943. and Wells 5, 6. 7, and 9 during June and July, 1944. Contact metamorphism of coals is any physical or chemical change in the character of a coal directly attributable to heat of surface or intrusive igneous rocks. Coal beds so affected are found in the United States, England, Alaska, Mexico, New Zealand, Greenland, and other countries. Particularly in the United States, there is a wide occurrence of contact altered coals; conspicuous examples are found in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Illinois, and North Carolina. During a recent examination of coal beds on Yampa River, in northwestern Colorado, the author had an opportunity to make some detailed observations on the contact metamorphism of coals. In this field, coals over an area of 20 sq. mi. have been affected by dikes, sheets, and sills;' samples of the coals were systematically collected and analyzed,2 with the view of obtaining more specific data on the character of these alterations. The investigation was threefold in purpose: to secure information on the lateral effects of a dike cutting a coal bed, on the range in vertical effects on coal beds overlying sheets or sills, and on the range in the vertical effects on coal beds underlying sheets and sills. Favorable field conditions, such as fresh outcrops and newly dug prospects, made possible many of the field observations and collections. The coals studied in this field belong chiefly to the Mesaverde and 11Laramie" formations. The Mesaverde coals, on the average, are blocky low-rank bituminous coals; the "Laramie" coals, which are considerably younger, are of subbituminous rank. The coals of both formations, in the northeastern part of the Yampa field, have been greatly affected by basalt intrusives, yielding all variations of carbonized coal from natural coke to the unaffected material. The igneous rock that directly affects the coals is a fine-grained olivine basalt that is intruded, in sheets up to 200 ft. thick, into the coal-bearing

YEAR after year, the kaolin industry of the United States has been setting new production records and making better products. High-grade paper, pottery, and rubber clays are produced in this country mostly in the South. Georgia alone contributes over 70 pct and South Carolina almost 20 pct of the total domestic output. Residual kaolin is mined in North Carolina, highly plastic but naturally sandy Tertiary (Eocene) potting clays are worked in north central Florida, and good white clays are produced in several other states, but the main sources of kaolin or china clay have been numerous deposits in the Tuscaloosa (Upper Cretaceous) formation. This formation of generally sandy sediments is called the Middendorf member in older geologic reports and corresponds in age with some of the New Jersey clays. As shown in fig. 1, it crops out almost continuously in a generally southwesterly direction across South Carolina and Georgia and into Alabama. Clay is mined from this formation in all three states but the principal producing centers lie within about 10 miles of a straight line drawn between Aiken, S. C., and a point about 10 miles south of Macon, Ga. The white kaolins of the South were recognized and used prior to the Civil War but suitable treatment processes were not introduced until World War I when imports, chiefly from England, were curtailed. Although imports of high-grade clays were resumed after 1918, the domestic industry managed to treble its prewar production record during the early 1920's and has continued to grow. Whereas the 1909 to 1913 average total production in the United States was only 132,104 short tons valued at $705,352 f.o.b. mines, the output in 1948 was 1,568,848 tons worth $19,756,738.
