Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines or phosphate ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pct. When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. Delivery of tailing to any part of the area by gravity from the ridge was found practicable. Experiments with asbestos-cement pipe proved it possible to use level pipe across the dams if it is fed through an inclined section in which pressure could be developed. Use of pipe to transfer the tailing to the dams was not favored because of the possibility that choking might occur. Metal flume was not believed to have sufficient wear resistance on this material and wooden flume would not withstand damage by the weather so well- Flume -action made- of 26-in diameter asbestos-cement pipe, split before curing and molded to a specified cross section, were finally approved. The flume is connected to the 24-in. diameter tail in distribution pipe by heavy concrete lateral launders. Cascades of horizontal and vertical pipe sections are used at the top of the pressure leg where scouring by high-velocity flow of tailing might occur.

WHEN talking about Europe it is well to endeavor to keep politics and economics apart but they have become so intermingled in recent years that the discussion of one topic inevitably leads to the other. Economic influences formerly prevailed over politics but today national and international economies are governed by political forces. Commerce in raw materials, food, and manufactured products is now so restricted by governmental controls that the capacity of the world to produce and to consume, to exchange goods and to pay for them, cannot be gauged by the past or predicted by a multitude of experts. In prewar days there were some yardsticks but today there are none. Thus it is hazardous to make forecasts, for in all fields of human effort the world has been cast upon an uncharted sea.

IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

The high-grade orebody at Miami was mined successively by top-slicing, shrinkage, stoping and under caving. The method described in this paper was developed to enable the low-grade orebody (36,000,000 tons assaying 1.06 per cent copper) to be mined at a low cost without further dilution of the grade. The method is clearly described and illustrated by drawings and photographs, and the original paper should be consulted as it is impracticable to abstract it, beyond noting that the mining cost is just under 40 cents per ton and the average grade of ore now being produced yields less copper than the mill tailing of 1915, the tons mined per day having increased from 4000 to 18,000 in the same period. Vertical and Incline Shaft Sinking at North Star Mine By Arthur B. Foote, Grass Valley, Calif. (Tech. Pub. No. 324: Class A. Metal Mining, No. 36) THE main shaft of the North Star mine is an inclined one following the main vein at an average dip of 26 deg., a vertical shaft intersects it at the 4000-ft. (incline) level, the incline continuing to the 6300-ft. level. At this point the vein was found to give out and a new vein, called the No. 1, was found to dip in exactly the opposite direction.

Investigations were conducted at two underground locations, foreman's room and 5702 area, of the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mining installation, Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico. The rock environment is stratified sandstone. Pressures were varied from minus 0.4 an Hg to plus 3.8 cm Hg with respect to barometric pressure, and were maintained for periods ranging from several hours to 21 days. One cm Hg overpressure (-1.5% of normal barometric pressure) produced a 20-fold decrease in Rn flux into the foreman's room as compared to the Rn flux observed during dilution ventilation. The 5702 area experienced a 5-fold decrease in Rn flux for a similar overpressure. During 21 days of continuous 1 cm Hg overpressure in the 5702 area this reduced Rn flux was maintained. The smaller reduction in flux for the 5702 area results in part from the proximity of the foreman's room to a non-pressured area and the presence of an impermeable shale lens overlying the ceiling of the 5702 area. A 0.4 cm Hg underpressure of the 5702 area increased the Rn flux into the area by 3-fold over the non-pressured value. A barometric pressure influence on Rn flux into the mine and on air Rn concentrations in non-pressurd areas of the mine was measured. A falling barometric pressure causes an increase in the flux of interstitial gas into the mine; a rising barometric pressure decreases this flux. These effects are not seen in overpressured mine areas. Radon concentrations in rock interstices show, during overpressure, decreases of all locations monitored except in the immediate vicinity of the shale lens above the 5702 area ceiling. These reductions are the result of air flowing from the mine into the rock interstices under the influence of the pressure gradient induced by the overpressure. The relative humidity of the 5702 area was reduced after 2 days of 1 cm Hg overpressure from a pre-overpressure value of 96% to 81%. The control of harmful or noisesome gases which emanate into underground mining areas from surrounding rocks is often a costly necessity. In uranium (U) mines this problem is presented by the high interstitial concentrations of radon-222 (Rn), a radioactive noble gas of 3.82-day half-period, formed in the decay scheme of U238, and the relative ease with which this noble gas diffuses from its parent rock into the interstices of the rock and then to a working area. Long-term exposure to moderate concentrations of Rn (3000 µµc per 1) and its short-lived alpha-ray emitting daughter products, RaA (Po218) and RaC (po214), has been found to result in an increased incidence of bronchial carcinomaa2 The acceptable limit of Rn daughter products in a mine atmosphere is presently set at a concentration of short-lived radon daughters which would be in equilibrium with 100 ppc of Rn per 1 of air. Ventilation of mines is conventionally accomplished by continuously diluting the mine air with fresh air brought in by fan or natural convection from above ground surface. The diluted air is allowed to vent freely to the atmosphere. This process does nothing to retard the rate at which gases (including Rn) diffuse into the mine from surrounding rock. It merely reduces the concentrations of these gases within the mine. It is suggested that in a sufficiently permeable rock environment a slight pressurization of the mine air may induce air flow from the mine into the interstices of rock surrounding the mine. The convective flow of comparatively fresh air will reduce the concentration and the concentration gradient of undesirable gases in the rock interstices adjacent to the mine. Radon will diffuse counter-current to this convective flow at a rate proportional to its concentration gradient. In time, a steady state of convection and counter diffusion will be established. The Rn flux into the mine will never be reduced to zero, and will only asymptotically approach zero as the overpressure (and hence the convective velocity of purging air) approaches infinity. During 1963 and 1964, an investigation into the effect which such applied pressures have upon the Rn characteristics of a mine atmosphere was conducted at the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mines, Ambrosia Lake (near Grants), New Mexico.

After months of negotiations, the U. S. has agreed to buy between 6000 and 7000 long tons of Bolivian tin now stockpiled at Peruvian and Chilean ports, at $1.175 per lb, f.o.b. South American Ports. Harry A. McDonald of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. signed the contract with Victor Andrade, Bolivian ambassador. The Mercantile Metals and Ore Corp., of New York City, acted as the agent of Bolivia's Banco Minero in negotiating the deal. The contract is a short term one. Throughout the talks, the U. S. refused to make a long term agreement because of the possibility that Bolivia will soon nationalize its mines. The Bolivians desired to sell the U. S. 18,000 tons during a one-year pact. The price agreed upon is roughly the same as with Malayan producers. In the meantime, American Smelting & Refining Co., signed over control of its operations to the Bolivian Government. The formal act of leasing the mines to the Bolivian Government follows the announcement last July by the company that it was closing operations because of high costs. Contract terms were not disclosed.

IN the past five years, and without much fanfare, Turkey has emerged as a significant figure in the world mining picture. This has been accomplished by a five-year plan now in its last year. A second five-year plan is already under way, ahead of schedule. It will concentrate even more than the first in developing Turkish mines in order to increase present exports of coal, chrome ore, and copper, and to develop new mineral exports as well. To be fully understand the republicic?s mining program should be considered as something more than merely tapping rich resources in the East along the Aegean Sea, in the North among the mountains descending to the Black Sea, and in the West at the foot of the Taurus Mountains. It should also be viewed in the light of a strong nationalist policy with many aspects of state socialism. Turkey declares frankly that all mineral re- sources belong to the nation and all exploitation should be by the state for the twin purpose of modernizing the state and securing foreign exchange for the state by exports. Accordingly, the principal mines are state-operated and a few lesser enterprises, although not state-owned, have at least been put in the hands of Turkish capital.

DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

Petroleum production in the Rocky Mountain district during 1929 registered a small decline from that of the previous year, conforming with a gradual decrease in the amount of oil produced during the last few years. A number of causes may be mentioned to account for this result, chiefly overproduction in other regions and the apparent desire of operators in this territory to conform to the policy of proration and retrenchment adopted by special agreement among operators in many of the fields. Unit operation has been adopted to control oil production from the Sundance sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, in line with the general effort to stabilize this phase of the industry and prevent excessive drilling of new wells. Another factor which greatly retarded development in the Rocky Mountain region was the executive order of President Hoover issued in March refusing the award of new prospecting permits to future applicants and threatening cancellation of all existing permits upon which actual drilling had not been done as specified by law. Only four states in the Rocky Mountain region are important oil producers. In 1929 Wyoming led with an average daily output of 52,600 bbl., followed by Montana, with 10,730 bbl.; Colorado, with 6500 bbl., and New Mexico with 2700 bbl. daily average. These states bear the following percentage relation to total production in the Rocky Mountain district: Wyoming, 72; Montana, 15; Colorado, 9; New Mexico, 4., (Table 1.) The total average daily production was approximately 73,000 bbl. and the total production of all four states during the year was 26,534,606 bbl. This is 2.7 per cent. of the total oil production of the United States during this period. OPENING the sessions of the Mining Geology Committee, the program on postwar mineral controls drew a larger attendance than any other session of the entire meeting. In view of its general interest, the papers of this session, or a substantial portion of them, are printed elsewhere in this issue. Whether control of mineral resources can help to promote peace, how controls could be applied and to whom, are questions so far-reaching that naturally no pat answer was agreed upon. In fact the discussion took on something of the flavor of a debate between those who favor strict control and those who felt that attempting to ration nations in peacetime would defeat its own ends. Discussion from the floor emphasized the difficulties in administering any international control and the $64 question, that no one cared to answer, asked by a courageous young lady who was induced to mount the rostrum for the purpose, was whether the United Nations should exchange mineral controllers to police each other.

THE determination of the orientation of metal single crystals and the studies of plastic deformation are greatly facilitated by the use of the stereographic projection. To draw a standard projection of the crystal it is necessary to have a tabulation of the angles between the various crystal-lographic planes of the particular crystal studied. Bozorth' has published such a table for the cubic system which can be found in many reference books; such convenient tabulation for the hexagonal metals, however, does not appear to be in the literature, although scores of workers have calculated these angles. Therefore, Table I of angles for magnesium, zinc, and cadmium has been compiled. Since the c/a ratio is different for each of these metals, three separate calculations are necessary. The angles 4 between (HKIL) and (hkil) were calculated by means of the formula: Hh+Kk+½(Hk + hK)1+~3aLl cos The c/a ratios were calculated from data given in the 1948 edition of Metals Handbook. Fig. 1 is a typical (0001) standard projection of zinc. For all practical purposes, it serves for cadmium as well, as can be seen from the table. THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. High-temperature heat contents of InAs and GaAs were measured over the temperature range 400°K to temperatures above the melting points using a di-phenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed values of the thermal properties have been derived and tabulated at even temperature interuals . The heats of fusion of InAs and GaAs were determined as, respectively, 8790 ± 200 and 12,590 ± 300 cal per g-atom at the respective melting points of 1210º ± and 1513º ± 1°K, yielding entropies of fusion of 7.26 * 0.16 and 8.32 ± 0.20 cal perºK per g-atom, respectively. A general discussion of the thermal properties of III-V com-pounds is given. THE low-temperature heat capacities of InAs and GaAs have been determined by Piesbergen.1Using a dynamic temperature modulation technique, Miller2 has determined the heat capacities of the compounds as well as GaSb and Ge between room temperature and 650°K; however, it has been observed that values determined by drop calorimetry for GaSb3 and for germanium4 are consistently about 5 pct lower than Miller's results. Cox and Pool10 report values for the heat content of InAs and GaAs and the heat of fusion of InAs. No value for the heat of fusion of GaAs appears to have been previously reported. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InAs and GaAs measured in the range 400" to above 1500°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. These results, together with our previous results on III-Sb compounds3 as well as heat-content measurements5 of solid InP and Gap, are used in a general discussion of these compounds. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES High-purity samples of the compounds, stoichio-metric to ±0.1 at. pct, were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories. The trend of American construction toward permanence and longevity is noticeable in the more recent coal plant installations; also, the policy of many coal operators has changed from seeking to obtain the desired tonnage from several plants of small capacities to designing a single installation to produce the whole amount. The mine openings and plant of the Nemacolin mine of The Buckeye Coal Co., are located on the Greene County side of the Monongahela River, 73 miles south of Pittsburgh. The map (Fig. 1) shows the general location, also the Lambert syncline. This syncline partly accounts for the selection of the site; the other reasons were the possibilities of rail and river shipments. Two shafts and a slope were sunk to the coal, work starting on all three in the second half of the year 1917. The air shaft was sunk to a depth of 243 ft. and completed in February, 1918; the slope was completed in November, and the skip shaft was stopped at a depth of 21 ft. below the coal, then the concrete lining was stopped 8 ft. above the coal August, 1918. Work on the skip shaft was resumed May, 1923, and sunk to a depth of 60 ft. below the coal by September, but it was not until May, 1924, that the lining was poured. Max. Min. The surface plan shows the relative positions of the openings. Coal was first hoisted from the air shaft May 7, 1918, and entry driving was continued; but the coal had to be stored, as the railroad had not been extended from Crucible to Nemacolin. As soon as the slope was driven to the coal and the linings concreted, the entries were driven along projected lines to connect with those advancing from the air shaft, and skip shaft. As soon as the underground connections had been made between the two shafts, the hoisting by buckets was inaugurated at the skip shaft and construction on the fan at the air shaft started.

An experimental technique has been developed for carrying out a dynamic tensile stress-strain test in which plastic strain is measured continuously throughout the microstrain region extending through the macroflow region to total deformations of 5 pet. The tests were carried out on niobium, samples having interstitial impurity levels of 160 and -800 ppm at temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 100°K. A band spectrum of activation energies was obtained from calculations based on the measured activation volumes and temperature dependence of flow stress. The inability of a single rate-controlling process to predict such a phenomenon has led to the proposal that several sequential rate-controlling dislocation mechanisms are operative in the preyield micro-strain region. These are thought to be: the motion of geometrical kinks, the formation of double kinks in edges, and finally in the macrostrain region the formation of double kinks in screws. In less pure niobium the effect of interstitial impurities is shown to be dominant in the microstrain region, suggesting that a fourth probable mechanism is overcoming interstitial barriers instead of geometrical kink motion and the formation of double kinks in edge dislocations. THE principal fundamental aim of most mechanical properties studies of crystalline solids is to determine the dislocation mechanisms responsible for the plastic behavior. The extension of such studies to the region of preyield microstrain behavior has received renewed attention in the past few years as the details of macroscopic flow behavior have become better understood. For the most part, microstrain studies have been carried out using one of two variations of a single experimental technique.1 The first method involves loading the sample at a constant extension rate to a predetermined stress level (less than the macroscopic yield stress), instantaneously unloading, and then determining the extent of plastic deformation to a sensitivity of 10"6. The microscopic stress-strain curve is then constructed from the results of a repeated series of such individual measurements, each of which involves loading to an incrementally higher stress level, by relating the accumulated plastic microstrain for each step to the maximum applied stress in that step. The second variation, also carried out by step-wise increases in stress, measures the total strain to a sensitivity of ~10"6 and relates the maximum stress to the area of closed hysteresis loops that are generated under certain conditions (namely, prestrained samples). The foregoing methods have yielded interesting information about the nature of preyield deformation and plastic response to stresses below the yield stress, but they offer certain disadvantages for studying the dynamic behavior of dislocations. In the first method it is physically impossible to specify a plastic strain rate inasmuch as the test sample is reexposed, as it is loaded to its maximum stress in a particular step, to lower stresses at which flow will take place. The strain corresponding to a given stress level on the stress-microstrain curve thus generated will then always be greater than that at the corresponding stress level of a truly dynamic test carried out at the same extension rate. The second method has been used to obtain correlations with dynamic macroscopic flow parameters by applying dislocation damping theory to the hysteresis loop areas.2 The approach has had some success but suffers in that only samples that have been prestrained a few percent can be studied. IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.
