CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

Every 12 minutes, a cable operated skip car appears from beneath the desert surface of Arizona's Papago Indian Reservation. The Papagos have become quite used to the car, particularly those whose paychecks depend upon its regular appearance. The 24-ton capacity skip or tramcar hauls copper ore out of the North Decline of Hecla Mining Company's new mine about 30 mi south of Casa Grande. While there's nothing particularly glamorous about the skip itself, the railroad system upon which it travels is interesting because of the unconventional way it was built.

Bedded potash deposits are known only from Phanerozoic evaporite sequences. They are composed of either sylvite or carnallite, of which only the former produces commercial potash ores. Both Permian and Neogene potash deposits have experienced sulfatization by percolating oxygenated surface brines, causing enrichment in the potash content. Permian potash deposits are mined in various parts of Europe and North America, Miocene ones only along the outer rim of the Carpathian Mountains and in Sicily. New discoveries of large Miocene rock salt bodies make it possible to predict the occurrence of potash deposits along their flanks.

On its tenth anniversary, the computer is a "fact-of- life" in the mineral industries. Its evolution as a practical mining tool was accurately summarized by Alfred Weiss, editor of the Proceedings of the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium, A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry: "During the past decade, data processing and operations research developments within the mineral industry have evolved through states typical of any new technique. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."

THIS paper deals primarily, with the advantages realized from the adoption of methods more suitable than those previously used. The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company's furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NPDES are discussed with emphasis on the ‘toxic’ or priority pollutants, and EPA’s philosophy on the control of these pollutants. The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCRA regulations that will effect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

THIRTY per cent of the mineral wealth of the United States is obtained from seven states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. This area, which produced 84,727,156,000 worth of minerals in 1948, constitutes an almost complete economic unit in relation to mineral resources essential to industry. All of these states are producers of fuels and some of metallics, but in the field of important nonmetallic industrial minerals the picture is near perfection-a mineral any one of the seven states lacks, one of the others has in quantity.

With over one year experience, Western Deep Levels Ltd., reports satisfactory operation with new features of its 200,000 ton per month gold reduction plant. Western Deep is Anglo American group's newest gold mine. It is situated 43 miles west of Johannesburg on the West Wits Line and will ultimately be extracting ore from a depth of 13,000 ft. Although the plant was put in production in March 1962, after a three month break-in period, construction of the fifth milling section was not completed until last month.

The mechanism of blasting and the effect that blasting has on rock properties including the generation of new cracks and the opening of existing joints is discussed and compared with changes in seismic velocities. .Knowing the extent of blast induced damage and the overall stable slope angle it is shown that it is possible to design blasting so as not to induce any damage behind the toe of the blast area. Practical methods of blasting to meet this criterion and the results of these blasts are then discussed.

The effectiveness of coal mine face ventilation and the ability of airflow to maintain satisfactory methane and respirable dust levels in the working face area has been studied through the use of scale modeling techniques and underground testing procedures. In particular, consideration has been given to examination of the effects of operation of a high airflow, machine mounted dust scrubber unit on face air patterns. Results obtained through a cooperative study with the Peabody Coal Co. demonstrate that new mining cycles can be considered that increase production efficiency while maintaining satisfactory ventilation conditions.

IN February 1952 Freeport Sulphur Company started exploration work on a group of lateritic deposits at Moa Bay, Cuba. As a result of successful exploration work and a vast amount of metallurgical research over the past five years, these deposits will soon become a new Free World source of nickel and cobalt. Moa Bay lies on the north coast of Oriente Province, the easternmost part of the island, about 600 miles east of Havana and about 40 miles east of the U. S. Government nickel plant at Nicaro.

I. INTRODUCTION. SINCE the first installation of MacDougall roasters at the Great Falls smelter of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the capacity of the furnaces has been more than doubled. During the first nine or ten years of the operation of the MacDougall department the tonnage treated by the furnaces remained practically unchanged. HARD as it is at any time to provide more than three million tons of coal each year for power plants, the task really gets rugged in the wintertime when the fuel freezes solid in the cars. At the Marysville plant of the Detroit Edison Co. the problem of unloading cars of frozen coal was severe because there was an unloader over only one of the two tracks in the coal unloading house. Moving downward by their own weight, with no driving force to aid them, the spuds of this old unloader were unable to break through the crust on a frozen coal car. 20,000 Lb Force To meet this problem, a new mechanical car unloader was installed over No. 2 track and placed in service in December 1947. It is a Kenney type unloader built by Heyl & Patterson, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a modification of equipment originally designed to unload iron ore cars. The major advantage of this unloader is the force with which it can drive the sharp spade on the end of its ram down through the pockets of a frozen coal car. The unloader consists of the following major units: 1. A traveling bridge structure. 2. A traveling trolley. 3. A retractable and oscillating ram. 4. The operators cab and controls. The bridge is provided with safety hooks to prevent its being lifted from the rails by the upwards push of the ram. The bridge will travel 190 fpm and has sufficient traction on its four wheels to move three loaded 70 ton cars. The trolley runs on tracks supported by the bridge girders and also has upper tracks to control the push from the ram. Two of the single-flange trolley wheels are driven by a one and a quarter hp dc motors equipped with magnetic brakes. The ram is raised and lowered by a 20 hp dc motor equipped with a magnetic brake. A full stroke of a little over 14 ft is given the ram through its rack and pinion drive and the spade can be pushed down into a loaded car with a force of about 20,000 lb. A 15 hp dc motor with a magnetic brake is applied to this drive and is able to swing the ram 45º either side of the vertical. The usual procedure in emptying a coal car is first to drive the sharp spade down through the coal until the pocket is opened and the coal starts to run out the hopper. When all the hoppers are open, the sweeping action of the ram and spade is used to move the remainder of the coal in the car over to the open hoppers. The travel of the trolley permits cleaning the sides of a coal car with the edges of the spade, using the sweeping motion of the ram. It is still necessary to clean out the corners of the car by hand. Final Clean-Out This unloader was a new development and there were improvements to be made before it was completely satisfactory, such as reduction in speed and conversion to ac drive motors. However, it helped at Marysville and unloaded many frozen cars that would have taken a lot of heating to thaw out enough for the old unloader to handle. The mechanical coal unloader described above was a considerable improvement but still left a job to be done by hand-the final cleaning out of the coal cars. The ram had the ability to open a hole through the hopper cars, but did not meet required unloading speed. Subsidence has occurred in several areas of the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas, although in most cases this is not evident without precise instrumental leveling. As referred to in this report, the region comprises about 7200 sq miles of the Gulf Coastal Plain and includes all or parts of the following counties: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Chambers, Orange, and Jefferson (Fig. 1). Topographic relief is low, ranging from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to 300 ft or more in northwestern Harris County. In this upper Gulf Coast region, which embraces the most heavily populated and industrialized parts of Texas, industrial and municipal water supply is obtained chiefly from wells. Largest center of ground-water withdrawal is the Houston-Baytown area, where about 200 million gallons per day was pumped in 1956 for municipal and industrial use. Other large centers of ground-water withdrawal include the Alta Loma sector and the heavily industrialized Texas City area in Galveston County, where about 23 mgd was pumped in 1956. In the Freeport area in Brazoria County about 6 mgd was pumped in 1956 for city and industrial supply. In addition to withdrawals in metropolitan districts, great quantities of ground water are supplied by irrigation wells to thousands of acres of rice. These wells are widely dispersed over many miles, principally in Harris, Waller, Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Liberty counties, and effects of pumping are not so readily noticed as in the industrial and metropolitan sectors. Subsidence: Starting with the 1905-1906 line from Smithville, Tex., to Galveston, the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has extended a network of first and second-order level lines throughout the upper Gulf Coast region. In 1918, when a line was run from Sinton, Tex., to New Orleans, La., a tie was made to the 1905 leveling at Houston. In 1932-1933 a line was run from Palestine, Tex., to Houston, and a good deal of leveling was carried out in the vicinity of Houston. At this time the entire network was adjusted to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. In 1935-1936 and 1942-1943 several new lines were run and considerable releveling was performed. Supplementary adjustments were made after both the 1936 and 1943 levelings in order to reduce the elevations to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. These adjustments probably masked some of the subsidence that had occurred up to that time, although a certain amount of subsidence was noticed in the 1943 leveling. When several lines in the vicinity of Houston and Galveston were releveled in 1951, the regional nature of the subsidence became apparent.' Direct comparison with the 1943 leveling was possible because the datum was not changed. Comparisons with prior leveling were unreliable because of differences in the early and subsequent datums. In 1953-1954 many lines in the region were re-leveled and in 1957 the entire network, including the elevations previously determined, was readjusted to determine the changes in elevations as indicated by various levelings between 1905 and 1953-1954. In this instance the adjusted elevations were held fixed near the boundaries of the region where the bench marks seem to have remained stable. The only sea-level connection held fixed was the connection of the 1905 leveling to the 1903-1906 tidal series at Galveston. Almost the entire region has been at least slightly affected by the subsidence, some areas to a great extent. The profiles of subsidence (Fig. 2) and the map showing the contours (Fig. 3) illustrate both regional and local changes. A large area of subsidence is centered in the Houston-Baytown district, where the maximum recorded is about 2.7 ft between 1905 and 1954. This probably falls short of the actual maximum, since land surface subsided as much as 2.5 ft in the industrial section alone between 1943 and 1954. Sub-
