The concept of metal zoning has long been recognized (Spurr, 1907, 1923; Emmons, 1924, 1926; Lindgren, 1933; Rateman, 1950), although it has been considered indistinct for most epithermal districts. The geometric relation of barren zones of hydrother-mally altered rock to ore deposits was emphasized in the work of Lovering (1941, 1949, 1950), Sales and Meyer (1948, 1949, 19501, Burbank (1941, 1950), Schwartz (1939, 1950), and Kerr (1947). Lovering (op. cit.) and Sales and Meyer (op. cit.) emphasized the consistent presence of barren alteration envelopes enclosing individual ore bodies, particularly of the vein type. Schwartz (1950) noted a difference between the distribution of alteration zones described by Lovering and by Sales and Meyer, as compared with those associated with the porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest. The disseminated deposits of the Southwest usually occur within large bodies of altered rock whereas most veins do not. In the following discussion the mineralization process is conceived of consisting of two distinct phases: pre-ore nonmetallic alteration and metallization. In the present investigation the position, size, and shape of all known hydro thermally altered areas and the position, size, and metal type of all known ore deposits were plotted on base maps of southwestern and west-central Colorado (Figure 1). The maps indicate a generally consistent geometric relation between altered and metallized areas. The addition of alteration to the pattern of metal deposits establishes a temperature zoning pattern of much greater clarity than that formed by the epithermal metal deposits alone, and allows a more precise definition of mineral belts. The center of strongest mineralization is indicated to be the area of greatest barren alteration, and metal deposits are grouped about it both under structural control and crudely in response to temperature zoning. The combination of an area of strong alteration and associated marginal clusters of metal deposits is defined as a mineral district. The strong similarity in individual deposits, in groups of different types of deposits, and in the alteration-metallization relation in districts throughout the region implies that a single metallogenic province is represented in southwestern and west-central Colorado. The occurrence of deposits in Tertiary voi-canics indicates a late Tertiary metallogenic epoci., although an early Tertiary epoch is known locally as at Ouray. "Mining companies have recognized that characterization of ore breakage plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits.Recently the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has developed a new breakage model incorporating the effect of particle size, and a new breakage characterization testing device, called the JK Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT), which allows rapid testing of particle breakage under high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impact conditions.Positive feedback received from mining company sponsors to the new technology has prompted the JKMRC to further validate the device and the model through a formalized validation program using machines designed and manufactured by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME). The first unit was installed and commissioned at the Anglo Platinum laboratory in Johannesburg in March 2007 and four more major mining companies will participate in the validation program in 2008, including Barrick, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Teck Cominco. The results from validation tests at the JKMRC and Anglo Research have shown that the JKRBT generates statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional Drop Weight Test, but with significant advantages over its predecessor. Application of the JKRBT in geometallurgical testing with the AMIRA P843 GeM project has confirmed the JKRBT device offers a rapid and consistent method for determining the hardness of drill core samples. The JKRBT has the potential to revolutionize ore testing, with applications in laboratory impact breakage characterization of rock samples, drill cores, coal and other materials. It also stands poised to significantly advance the process control and management of comminution circuits since the concept is readily adaptable to on-line ore hardness measurement.INTRODUCTIONMining companies have long recognized that the performance of a comminution machine such as a crusher or an autogenous / semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG) mill depends not only on the machine operating conditions, but also on the “hardness” of the feed material to be broken. This recognition has driven significant interest in laboratory particle breakage characterisation and testing. The laboratory breakage characterization tests can be roughly classified in two broad groups based on their primary breakage modes: tumbling and impact/compression. The famous Bond ball/rod mill tests (Bond, 1952 and 1961) represent the typical tumbling test and have become the industry standard for estimating the specific energy (kWh/t) of rod and ball mills. However, as the energy application in the single particle impact tests can be well defined and controlled, the latter have received significant attention in the last 30 years. It was estimated that mining companies worldwide spent over three million US dollars on single particle impact breakage characterization testing in 2006."

The factors which control chimney subsidence sinkhole development in weak rock were assessed by analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chimney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range. The area of study included features developed over abandoned mines in the Colorado Springs Coal Field, the Boulder Coal Field, and the Foothills District. The approximate locations of the areas studied are shown in Figure 1. Data were collected for sinkholes occurring over both room and pillar, and retreat mining areas in coal seams with a wide range of dips. The location, size, and approximate time of development of each sinkhole were documented. From these data, relationships were developed which describe the time rate of observable sinkhole development and the relative location of sinkhole development with respect to mined height, overburden thickness, and type of mining for relatively flat-lying coal seams. In addition, the observed locations of sinkhole development over steeply dipping coal seams were assessed for portions of the study area.

Constructing tunnels in congested urban areas requires tunnels to be placed closer together and with less cover than was previously necessary. Contract CQ031 of New York?s East Side Access project will construct four six-meter diameter bored tunnels in a three-up one-down ?T? configuration, with less than three meters of soil between the tunnels. Mixed-face rock and glacial till conditions with a high ground water table will be encountered under active railroad yards. The tunnels will also pass beneath the busiest railroad interlocking in North America with cover as shallow as three meters. This paper discusses the challenges of designing segmentally lined tunnels for these conditions.

Granitic rocks usually exhibit strongly anisotropy due to pre-existing microcracks induced by geologic loadings. The understanding of the rock anisotropy in mechanical properties such as tensile strength is critical to quarrying and stabilization of underground structures. In this paper, Brazilian tests are conducted in combination with MTS material testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system to measure both static and dynamic tensile strength of anisotropic Barre granite. Samples are cored and labeled using the three principle anisotropic directions of Barre granite (BG). These directions are also chosen as the loading directions for the Brazilian discs. For dynamic tests, pulse shaping technique is used to achieve dynamic equilibrium in the samples during the test. Finite Element Method is implemented to formulate equations that relate the failure load to the material tensile strength employing a orthotropic model for Barre granite. For samples in the same orientation group, the tensile strength shows clear loading rate sensitivity. The tensile strengths exhibit clear anisotropy under static loading; while less anisotropy under dynamic loading. The tensile strength anisotropy of Barre granite is interpreted as interactions of the pre-existing microcracks.

Keywords: Wire Drawing, OFHC Copper, Recrystallization, Orientation imaging Microscopy (OIM), Texture inhomogeneity Textural inhomogeneities have been investigated in oxygen free high conducting (OFHC) copper wire drawn at room temperature to a true strain of 2.31, and isothermally annealed at 250°C and 750°C for annealing times ranging from 10 s to 1 hr. Local orientations were mapped by means of orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microtexture of the drawn wires showed a strong <111> + weak <100> duplex fiber texture at the inner core, whereas the mid and surface regions had a comparatively weak texture. Annealing at 250°C resulted into a recrystallization which originated from the mid section, proceed towards the surface regions and ends in the inner core. Recrystallization resulted into a strong<100>+weak<111> duplex fiber texture. A similar textural inhomogeneity was observed during short annealing at 750°C. However, prolonged annealing gave rise to abnormal grain-growth that proceed from the inner core to the outer surfaces with a dominant <111> fiber component at the inner region and mixed components of <111>, <100>, and <112> at the outer surfaces.

I want to explore whether it is valid or even useful to talk about sustainable corporations. After 20 years of focus on sustainable development, the concept of a sustainable corporation is not particularly helpful and it may in fact be profoundly misleading. Why? û because it obscures the need for corporations to be recognised as part of a sustainable society, rather than achieving some kind of corporate nirvana divorced from the social, political and environmental reality. It is more helpful to ask whether corporations are ready to recognise that they are one player among many within society û with the demands this would place on them in terms of transparency, accountability and social responsibility. The achievement of sustainable development has become the new corporate orthodoxy of many large corporations. It has become a clichT to argue that corporations must become æsustainableÆ. The achievement of æsustainabilityÆ is encouraged, as the ultimate step in some form of corporate evolution. We are failing to recognise that sustainability a process û not an end in itself. An enormous array of instruments is being developed to measure when sustainability is or is not being achieved. For example, corporate reporting has burgeoned into an art form, which describes æsustainabilityÆ in a variety of ways. There is no external standard applied to such reporting. These descriptions are quite partial and often place the best possible gloss on the companyÆs activities. I have become increasingly uneasy about this rhetoric and this paper has allowed me the luxury of sorting out my unease. I will discuss, largely in the Australian context, the current debate and literature and describe the way some global mining corporations are dealing with these questions, and finally, offer some suggestions which might be helpful at the operational level.

"The conversion of a concentrator from one grinding media type to another is a major undertaking in terms of both financial and technical risk. So, a strategy of completing sufficient laboratory and field tests to mitigate this risk, and give the operation confidence that advancing to plant trial will give a high probability for success.The objectives of this paper are twofold: to provide the reader with a strategy for mitigating risk prior to undertaking a plant trial; and to provide a statistical basis for analysing plant trial data. That is, when employing an electrochemically inert grinding media in the primary grinding circuit it is possible to change the pulp chemistry of the system and improve the metallurgical response of the ore.This paper tracks the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical performance of Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s silver/lead/zinc concentrator as the primary ball mill was converted from forged steel grinding media to high chrome grinding media. The changed in metallurgical performance are correlated to the shift in pulp chemistry.INTRODUCTIONTheoryBruckard et al (2011) recently published an article describe the effect of the grinding environment on the flotation of copper sulphides. While this paper confined its discussion to copper sulphides the arguments presented apply equally to other sulphide mineral systems. Broadly, these studies indicate that most sulphide minerals are more noble than the grinding media used during comminution. Therefore, the sulphide minerals are cathodic with respect to the forged steel grinding media, and the following reactions apply:Cathode (sulphide mineral): ½O2 + H2O + 2e- ? 2OH- (1)Anode (grinding media): Fe ? Fe2+ + 2e- (2)A galvanic couple between the grinding media and the sulphide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the forged steel media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulphide minerals thereby affecting their floatability (Johnson, 2002).The application of more electrochemically inert grinding media to “real” ore systems at an industrial level to improve metallurgical performance has not gained universal acceptance. The aim of this paper is to provide a protocol for conducting laboratory and plant test work that clearly demonstrate that metallurgical benefits are not only possible, but measureable, by way of example. In this case, the work conducted at Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation in Namibia is described."

"Due to depletion of the existing ore deposits the content of non-ferrous metals in produced ores has an inevitable tendency to decrease. Processing of low-grade ores is associated with production of low-grade selective concentrates and poses serious problems for the non-ferrous industry relating to increasing losses and expenses for waste treatment and disposal.The main component contaminating selective concentrates is iron sulphides.Copper-nickel, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores have been discussed as most important types of ores requiring removal of iron sulphides.One of the promising directions for development of selective flotation technology is the use of lowmolecular organic depressors. An advantage of organic compounds is in the possibility of multi-variant structure of organic molecules, which permits selection of a most efficient reagent for the given conditions. Another way for improving the grades of concentrates is concentration of valuable constituents associated with iron sulphides in an intermediate product and upgrading of the latter by chemical and metallurgical techniques.In order to remove iron from nickel concentrates, specific process conditions have been developed for selective flotation of pentlandite with the use of an organic depressor for pyrrhotite. The use of a depressor for flotation of high-grade copper-nickel ores ensures an increase in the nickel content up to 14% in the nickel concentrate produced as compared with 7% when using conventional process conditions, along with a nickel recovery improved by 2-3%."

"This paper describes the implementation of model-based predictive control (MPC) on a vacuum heat exchange network at Alcan's Jonquière Complex. The plant produces alumina from bauxite ore using the Bayer Process.The MPC system was commissioned in 2000, by Alcan personnel and an Advanced Control Engineer from Matrikon. The application has achieved an uptime of about 97%.The benefits were:• Energy savings : 0.5% - live steam reduction• Reduced variation: standard deviation of key temperatures reduced by 50%• Plant throughput increase: via the automated use of surge tanks• Decreased supervision time: by plant operations• Faster and easier diagnosis of problems and plant constraintsThe benefits were higher than expected with a payback time around 12 months.The purpose of the vacuum heat exchange network is to recover energy from a hot stream (pregnant liquor) by transferring it to a cold stream (spent liquor). The system is very tightly coupled, and the main constraints of the multivariable control system are: • to control the many tank levels involved in the process (8 tanks)• to maximize the temperature of the heated streams (spent liquor)• to prevent cooled streams (pregnant liquor) from cooling to below a minimum temperatureThe system includes 9 manipulated, 14 controlled and 2 feedforward variables.The advanced control implementation runs under an expert system environment and provides added flexibility to the overall control strategy."

There is a strong demand for nickel metal due to quick development of stainless steel and new electrical materials, most of which is extracted from sulfide resources, resulting in a serious depletion of sulfide resources. Therefore, more attentions have been paying to extracting nickel from nickel laterite, which accounts for some 50% of total nickel metal production. In this paper prereducing?magnetic separation?reduction smelting process is developed to manufacture ferronickel rom two types of nickel laterite DN and GN, assaying 1.42% 1.83% Ni and 49.09% 26.08%Fetotal, respectively. Mineralogy of two types of nickel laterite was determined and optimization of process parameters was conducted to manufacture ferronickel. Prereduction?magnetic concentration process is used to upgrade low grade nickel laterite firstly, two kinds of Ni-Fe concentrates being prepared of DN assaying 2.26% Ni and 69.45% Fetotal and GN containing 2.76% Ni and 38.00% Fetotal. Finally, two types of ferronickel were produced by reduction smelting of prereduced concentrates DN and GN, DN and GN ferronickel contains 2.97% Ni and 6.58%Ni, 89.25%Fetotal and 89.95%Fetotal, respectively. The total recoveries of Ni and Fe of the two ferronickel are beyond 90% and 80%, respectively. There is significant difference in grade of magnetic concentrates and ferronickel between DN and GN laterite due to their different mineralogy, the former belongs to limonitic laterite and the latter saponite one. There are some advantages for this process to manufacture ferronickel from nickel laterite, including effectively upgrading low grade nickel laterite by prereducing?magnetic separation technique, higher throughput and lower energy available for reduction smelting section due to some 40% gangue being rejected in pre-upgrading section, and much less metallurgical coke consumption by using non-coking coal as reductant for prereducing?magnetic separation?smelting process.

ONE of the morning sessions at the recent Annual Meeting was devoted to a Symposium on ways and means to expedite geological investigation, and also to promote greater prospecting activity, in Canada. It will be recalled that at the 1940 Annual Meeting, held in Winnipeg, a paper(l) prepared by Dr. G. A. Young, Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey, was presented, and was followed by a Symposium on Geological Investigations in Canada(2). On that occasion, the participants were in the main geologists, and they included the directors or other officials of each of the Provincial departments or bureaus of mines. At the Montreal meeting, the subject was discussed mainly from the point of view of the mining industry. The following pages present, in somewhat summarized form, the several contributions to that discussion.-ED. DR. J. J. O&apos;NEILL(3), who was to have opened the Symposium, was unfortunately prevented through illness from attending the meeting. He had intended outlining the main features of his paper on The Exploitation and Conservation of Mineral Resources in a Balanced Development of Canada, presented at the last annual meeting of the Royal Society of Canada( 4). In his absence, DR.J. A. DRESSER presented a summary of the paper.

In a survey of the effects of heat treatment on the comminution of various rocks, it was found that unusual size distributions often characterize the broken products, and that this is related to a great increase in intergranular fracture1. It is the purpose of the present paper to contribute to an understanding of this effect. In a thesis by one of use, critical consideration was given to many mechanisms which could conceivably be responsible for the increased intergran-ular fracture. It was shown that neither gross chemical changes nor intergranular corrosion are required. Among non-chemical mechanisms the most likely appeared to be (1) Uneven expansion due to thermal gradients, giving spalling (2) In a manner similar to that prevailing in metals, the appearance at high temperature of intergranular weakness. (3) Unequal thermal expansion of adjacent grains. Experiments were designed and conducted to permit a choice among the many alternative mechanisms and in particular among the three listed here. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Tests were made on the materials listed in Table 1. Of each material, only lumps similar in composition and grain size were used. The three marbles listed in Table 1 were analyzed to assure that their chemical compositions did not differ greatly (Table 2). On the basis of the chemical analyses, of differential thermal analyses, and of X-ray powder diffraction patterns, it appeared that the marbles were very similar except for their grain sizes.

"Graphite has unique properties such as high thermal resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good thermal and electrical conductivity, and is often utilized as coating materials for electrical conductors, TV Brown tubes, electromagnetic shields, and so on. Additionally, its excellent lubrication property is widely used in oil and solid lubricants. Finely ground graphite particles in the sub-micron range are commonly used for these applications.Sub-micron fine graphite particles are typically prepared in liquids by vibration ball mills. However, it is known that the wet process takes long periods of grinding time like 24 hours or more and requires a series of subsequent highenergy operations such as de-watering, drying, regrinding and classification. On the other hand, there would be numerous advantages if fine grinding could be done effectively in dry atmosphere. However, since crystalline graphite has a layered structure giving a high lubrication property, its dry grinding, especially when obtaining sub-micron size particles, is extremely difficult. The shape of the graphite particles is also important for its utilization since particles with flaky shape can maintain relatively high electrical and thermal conductance as well as lubrication ability. Therefore, it would be necessary to reduce the size of graphite particles into fines with flaky shape while grinding proceeds. Dry grinding characteristics of natural graphite under various atmospheric conditions with gases using different mills were studied, and fine flaky particles by grinding the graphite intercalation compounds and the exfoliated graphite were produced. However, there were no sufficient investigations on the size reduction of natural graphite at low atmospheric pressures in attritional milling conditions. The main purpose of this paper is to provide sub-micron fine grinding characteristics of natural crystalline graphite at various degrees of low atmospheric pressure, and to discuss the size reducing models in an attrition mill"

The goal: At an industrial site, sever a well pipe containing an interior obstruction in a timely, cost effective manner by using a shape-charge to cut through the casing more than 50 meters below ground surface from the outside, doing so while inside a larger pipe, without damaging the larger pipe. The problem: Pumps and retrieval tools stuck nearly 50 meters below ground surface inside a 305 mm diameter by 9.5 mm wall thickness water well casing. The well, depth of 185 meters, had to be inspected for contaminates then properly decommissioned before industrial expansion could take place overhead. The limitations: A 508 mm diameter pipe had been driven around the 305 mm pipe to a depth of 63 meters. The usable internal diameter of the larger pipe was about 480 mm while the smaller pipe had buckled at one point forming a 350 mm wide spot. The charge thickness was limited to less than one-half the difference. Additionally, water that filled the annular space between the two pipes had to be displaced for the charge to work properly. The solution: Enlist the support of the shape-charge manufacturer to design, build and test a charge to work under the conditions present, then make it work in the field.

Noise in general and drilling noise in particular have received increasing attention within the South African mining industry during the last 10?15 years. The Mine Health and Safety Committee1, during their 2003 annual summit, established two significant milestones to be met by December 2008 and December 2013. The 2008 milestone target is that of no more than ten per cent deterioration in hearing among occupationally exposed individuals, whereas the 2013 milestone target is that of less than 110 dB sound pressure levels at any place in the workplace. While these targets relate to general noise within the mining industry, it is widely believed that the most significant source of noise contributing to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) among the underground workforce, is that of pneumatic rock drills. Data pertaining to the noise emission level of any machine is generally reported as either a sound pressure level or a sound power level of a single machine measured under free field conditions as defined in Appendix 3 of SABS-ISO 37442. However, rock drills are seldom used in isolation and underground conditions cannot be considered as free field. A methodology for the selection of rock drills on the basis of total operating cost has been developed. However, this paper focuses on the noise elements of the generic methodology and provides a model for the prediction of the composite sound pressure level and the equivalent noise exposure levels of groups of individuals from machines, used singly and in combination in an underground environment based on the sound pressure level determined according to SABS-ISO 3744 under free field conditions. The methodology includes provision for the consideration of the effect of hearing protection devices and the use of multiple machines in combination and provides an indication of the potential costs of hearing compensation.
