Down-the-hole hammer is commonly recognized as the most powerful drilling equipment for weathered to fresh rock formation including boulders. However, its drilling diameter is restricted by reasons of difficulty to actualize large diameter drillhead and to ensure discharging means of cuttings. Cuttings are usually removed by flushing i.e. uprising return air after compressed air actuates hammer, but in case of large diameter drilling, as the clearance between drill rod and surrounding wall of hole become fairly large, necessary up-hole air velocity to transport cuttings can not be maintained. In case of marine or underwater drilling or high groundwater table, orthodox down-the-hole hammer is obstructed its operation by water. This single head hammer drill combined large diameter drillhead with reverse circulation of drilling fluid enables large diameter drilling extending to 1.5 m, i.e. actualized large diameter mechanical drillhead incorporated with ensured cuttings removal means enabled this range of drilling. This paper introduces its features and actual applications to large diameter bored pile drilling for varied sorts of rocks in maritime construction projects.

The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise induced hearing. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard Seco S215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock shavings, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. South Australia's economic development has relied heavily on the mineral industry. In the late 1840s the rich copper deposits at Kapunda and Burra saved the Colony's economy when South Australia became a world copper producer. Copper lodes developed at Moonta-Wallaroo during the 1860s brought further prosperity when mining activities at Kapunda and Burra were in decline. In addition to those large mines there were many smaller workings scattered through the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges producing copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. Most of the mines of this period were worked by Cornish immigrants who brought their own technology and mining methods with them. These people have left a cultural legacy unique in Aus- tralia. In this Jubilee 150 year (1986) the Department of Mines and Energy, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Planning, is helping to preserve and interpret selected historic mining sites, most of which have been neglected since their closure. This work is designed to draw people's interest to mining history by providing interpreted sites for them to visit and to demon- strate the importance of the mining industry in South Australia's cultural and economic develop- Ment.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with The Ohio State University Engineering Experiment Station as part of an investigation on the use of fuel in kilns.This report is preliminary and gives only enough of the test data to illustrate results and show the reasons for the successes and failures of the method of firing investigated; fuller details will be included in the final report.PERSONNEL FOR TESTSThe investigation is conducted under supervision of P. One phase of this investigation is the burning of coal on an automatic stoker to gain the advantages of control, constant rate of application of heat, and ability to burn cheaper coal than can be used in the hand—fired furnaces of kilns. It a stoker in to be used it is desirable that the coot of the installation should be low, the control of operation simple, and the distribution of heat in the kiln as good or better than with hand firing. These desiderata were sought in the stoker and furnaces that were used for the tests described herein. The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

Objective To reduce dust generated from soiled floors within enclosed operator cabs. Background Enclosed operator cabs are widely used on mobile excavation equipment in the mining and construction industries. They protect the operator from bad weather, noise, and airborne dusts. The inside cab environment usually must be kept at very low dust concentrations because of quartz dust generated from the excavation of silica-bearing rock. For cabs to be effective in controlling airborne respirable dust, they must have an efficient air filtration system, while providing a positive pressurization of the cab interior. Ideally, the recirculated and exterior makeup air filtration should provide at least 99% capture efficiency for dust particles as small as 0.3-µmaerodynamic diameters. Many of these enclosed cabs use heating units mounted or directed along the floor (see figure 1), which can cause dust entrainment problems. Prior studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of enclosed cabs have shown that these floor heaters can generate notable amounts of dust within the cab enclosure (see Technology News 486). Multiple-shift dust levels measured inside a drill cab increased on average from0.04 mg/m3 during the summer months to 0.68 mg/m3 during the winter months. Additional dust level measurements, made with optical particle counters during a nondrilling time period, verified that dust levels inside the cab increased from 0.03 to 0.26 mg/m3when the floor heater/fan was turned on. Dust levels within the cab also became greater than the ambient air dust levels outside of the cab when the floor heater was turned on during the nondrilling time period. This shows that the floor heater was a notable dust source problem. Cab floors are commonly soiled from operators tracking dirt inside the cab upon entering from the mine or construction site. Interior cab dust levels can be increased by (1) airflow disturbance of the soiled floor or (2) operator disturbance of the soiled floor. Approach During prior NIOSH surveys of surface coal mine drills, several drills with very low cab dust levels (#0.1 mg/m3) were observed to have floor sweeping compound spread out over the cab floor during the working shift. This initial observation led to a more controlled A-B study of the effect of the sweeping compound on the interior cab dust levels. This study involved dust sampling with and without sweeping compound inside the cabs of a bulldozer and two drills. Sweeping compounds commonly use sawdust or cellulose as the main bulk material, with oil or wax added for dust adhesion purposes. Sand is sometimes added to increase bulk density. Sweeping compounds with sand are commonly used to sweep up concrete floors. Those without sand (usually referred to as "gritless") are used to sweep up smooth finished floors. Most of the oils and waxes used for the adhesive ingredient are petroleum-base and can have an irritating odor. People sensitized to petroleum distillates could have allergic reactions to these sweeping compounds. A few companies offer non petroleum-base sweeping compounds, using either a natural oil or chemical additive for dust adhesion. During this study, it was decided that only the gritless sweeping compound (without sand) would be used, eliminating the addition of another potential silica source inside the cab. Since the sweeping compound would be applied on the enclosed cab floor for the duration of the shift, it was decided to use a canola oil-base sweeping compound to eliminate irritating odor from the petroleum-base sweeping compounds. The natural canola oil-base sweeping compound had a slight woody scent. The three pieces of equipment used in this study had notably different cab layouts. The bulldozer had a small cab with vents discharging air-conditioned or heated air from adjustable louvers at operator waist level and floor level. The bulldozer also had a cloth fabric seat and a carpeted floor. Drill A had a large cab with the heat directed from adjustable louvers at operator knee level and the air-conditioned air directed from cabin ceiling louvers. This drill had a vinyl fabric seat and a steel plate floor. Drill B had a small cabin with the heat directed across the floor (see figure 1) and the air-conditioned air directed down from the ceiling. It had a vinyl fabric seat and a worn rubber mat on a steel floor.

La segunda fase, integra todos los sistemas de supervisión y control de planta con los sistemas de seguimiento “online” de Mantenimiento (fase 1), desarrollando un solo sistema de tratamiento y análisis de información de planta; y la tercera fase comprende la instalación y el desarrollo de aplicaciones basadas en tecnologías Cliente/Servidor con base SQL, que finalmente proporcionan la información y los medios para realizar consultas que optimizan el seguimiento y toma de decisiones relacionado al mantenimiento preventivo/predictivo.

The merits of the various methods for dry-quenching coke have been the subject of numerous publications and almost equally numerous controversies for the past 40 years.5/ Most investigators have concluded that dry quenching is advantageous. Some have based their arguments on the improved physical properties of the resultant cokes. Others have claimed little or no improvement and have based their arguments on the economies acquired from the recovery and utilization of sensible heat. The extent to which the method of quenching influences the properties of the resultant cokes is of importance in connection with the operation of both commercial and experimental ovens. On the other hand, the recovery and utilization of sensible heat are economic problems related solely to commercial oven operation and- depend on the method of dry quenching used and the demand for a low intensity energy source. The scope of the present Bureau of Mines investigation has been limited to a comparative study of the properties of wet- and dry-quenched cokes produced from six coals and blends carbonized at flue temperatures of 2, 000° and 2,400° F. in the Tuscaloosa oven.

As part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve base metal leach systems, pressure leaching of galena (PbS) concentrates in fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) solution was investigated. Lead extraction was 93 pct when PbS was pressure leached in H2SiF6 at 95° C with 2OO-psig O2 pressure for 40 min, using ferric nitrate [Fe(N03)3] as a catalyst. The effects of several catalysts, O2 pressure, time, and acid concentration on leaching were determined. The purified leach solution was electrowon to recover high-purity Pb metal. The H2SiF6 used in leaching and electrowinning can be recycled continuously. A flow diagram was proposed based on this investigation. Elemental sulfur (SO) was recovered from the leach residue by solvent extraction. A method was also developed for treating the flnal residue to segregate the important byproduct elements such as Ag, Cu, and Zn and enable their recovery by standard commercial processes.

For deep block and panel caving mines, undercut or extraction level instability can have as much impact on overall recovery as underbreak or the premature ingress of waste. If the area of the mine affected by excessive convergence is small, recovery is usually possible. However, there are several examples of entire blocks that were abandoned prematurely due to footprint collapse. Clearly, such global instability has a major impact on recovery and must be avoided – this is one of the essential tasks for the design team.The design problem is complex. The planning engineer must ensure that the footprint has sufficient capacity to withstand the maturing loads in the cave, accounting for the effects of stress path, geological structures and the rock mass conditions. These are often uncertain and only sometimes quantified.The demand on the footprint will also be influenced by decisions and actions taken during production, especially related to draw, which can worsen a developing problem. Perhaps most importantly, the design decisions that favour stability and lead to lower deformation also negatively impact on idealised cave flow. Many engineers aim to minimise the size of extraction level pillars, to improve theoretical future resource recovery but in fact this can reduce recovery if widespread deformation ensues due to the undersized pillars.In 2014, PT Freeport Indonesia undertook detailed numerical analysis to quantify the effects of variability in rock mass conditions and geological structure on overall footprint performance. The analysis accounted for a range of stress paths and maturing cave loading scenarios sourced from a calibrated whole-of-cave deformation-flow model. The intent was to replicate some of the diversity and distribution of pillar deformation outcomes that may be seen in practice at Freeport.The discontinuum finite element analysis was able to replicate damage localisation around persistent structures, a realistic distribution of drive deformation and show how small areas of instability can evolve into major problems if poorly managed. The limits of pillar size and ground support as solutions to a number of different instability problems was also investigated, showing that pillar size alone was not a sufficient remedy for all adverse circumstances.In this paper, we describe the workflow for numerical analysis of footprint deformation. O presente trabalho busca verificar a viabilidade técnica de utilização de aços com diferentes percentuais de elementos de liga em sua composição química para a fabricação de brocas DIN 338, com e sem revestimento PVD de TiN comparando com aço AISI M2. A caracterização do material foi realizada em conformidade com a norma SEP 1615 e a identificação do tamanho de grão foi realizada pelo método Snyder-Graff. No teste de furação foi utilizada um centro de usinagem vertical 3 eixos. A aderência do filme PVD foi verificada pelo teste de indentação VDI 3198. As variáveis significativas foram o material do substrato, o revestimento da ferramenta, a velocidade de corte e o avanço de corte. As variáveis de resposta analisadas foram o desgaste da ferramenta, o número de furos produzidos, a rugosidade superficial e o diâmetro dos furos. Ao final do trabalho foi possível constatar que o material Z2 ainda não pode ser utilizado como alternativa ao AISI M2 para a fabricação de brocas helicoidais de aço rápido.

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. A rock mass responds to excavation according to the properties of the intact rock, the network of contained discontinuities and the susceptibility of the rock mass to weathering. Large deformation often occurs when one of these components causes the rock mass to have a low strength relative to the stress conditions. Analysis of such large deformations forms a significant feature of current numerical modelling in rock mechanics. A practical large deformation problem of roadways in a coal mine is described, demonstrating the requirements for improving numerical techniques. The development of a numerical model is then summarised with particular attention to several concepts pertinent to large deformation analysis in geomechanics. A numerical case study is presented in which the developed finite-element model is used and the results are compared with the in-situ measurements. Conclusions are drawn for rock engineering that are also relevant to both civil engineering and mining engineering projects

"The link between ore texture and mineral liberation has previously been established at a microscopic scale. To construct ore texture models that can be used in mining applications requires this relationship to be retained at a significantly larger scale. This is initially dealt with by finding a basic set of microtextures that form the elements of the ore textures at the next larger mesoscopic scale, simulating these mesotextures at a fine scale, then changing the support of the mesotexture simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Thus, a mutually exclusive and exhaustive set of spatially locatable mesotextures can be used to fully characterize the metallurgical properties of in situ material.A method that generates expected distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed, and includes: (1) characterizing the spatial correlation of the set of mesotextures with a single covariance function; (2) generating multiple simulations of mesotextures at a fine scale; and (3) using the simulations at a fine scale to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. A case study, using the George Fisher sediment-hosted base metal deposit in Queensland Queensland, Australia, is developed to demonstrate the proposed methodology as well as show the inadequacy of off-the-shelf approaches.Mining-scale texture models can be used to improve the in situ discrimination of ore from waste by exploiting the joint spatial variability of grades and textures to quantify the expected metal recovery of in situ material, then calculate local marginal cut-off grades. An artificial case study is presented to demonstrate the changes in ore/waste selection when considering ore texture models compared to constant metal recoveries."

"A study carried out on behalf of the National Research Council (NRC) indicates that economic losses due to wear in the Canadian mining industry are in excess of $700 million annually. Severe wear, mainly by abrasion, was identified as the most important wear mechanism in terms of possible savings. One way to reduce losses would be the proper use of databases. A joint project of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) and NRC (Tribology laboratories at IMRI) has been initiated to create a factual database containing all relevant experience in the area of wear in the Canadian mining industry. As a first step, a prototype covering slurry pumps is being built. This should help to answer many questions, such as the number of people involved, interest from industry, cost vs benefits, etc.IntroductionTribology is concerned with the understanding of the mechanisms of friction, wear, and lubrication.Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of those surfaces with lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants and their additives. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear (or, in the case of belts, brakes, clutch plates, and similar devices, in achieving optimum friction with minimum wear) and is concerned with the avoidance of associated failures in machinery.Lubrication is usually the solution to a problem of friction and wear. Yet far from all the problems of friction and wear are solved by lubrication. The wear of grinding rods or shovel track pads can hardly be solved by lubrication, to name just two examples with which mining engineers will be familiar. There are indeed many situations of wear and friction where the surfaces in contact are unlubricated.In part, tribology is a matter of design. A major aspect, however, has to do with the choice of materials, to satisfy external constraints upon the component design or choice. The operating conditions for much industrial equipment, particularly in mining are, often very severe. The development of wear resistant materials, including materials which are applied as coatings, is clearly an important technology from the point of view of tribology."

WITH the development of new processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels, an extensive literature search was undertaken to uncover fundamental relationships between fluid and heat flows and the operating variables of new types of converters. Examination of published correlations revealed that considerable uncertainty existed in the correlation of the operating variables of such equipment with the pressure drops which could be expected through packed and fluidized systems; correlations proposed in the literature differed from each other frequently by as much as 75 to 100 percent. Because new processes, especially more recent modifications of the original Fischer-Tropsch process, must compete with old, firmly established processes on the basis of unit product cost, the pressure-drop correlations in the literature were considered to be too inaccurate for use in calculating the energy required to pass fluids through packed beds. The following study was begun in 1946 to develop correlations that would be suitable for the design of new equipment in which fluids are brought into contact with granular materials. To arrive at general relationships, systems were chosen that did not involve chemical reactions, and a, particular effort was made to give the correlations only in terms of quantities that are ordinarily available from general process and design specifications.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan.
