The purpose of this report is to clarify the interpretation of some phases of previous progress reports5/ on the use or omission of stemming that have been brought to the attention of the authors by readers. As the stemming problem was approached from an entirely disinterested viewpoint and the data were presented impartially, results of investigations published in previous reports5/ were obtained under a definite set of conditions and procedure, and they may of may not be duplicated under different conditions and procedure in actual mining practice. Final conclusions regarding the use or omission of stemming in blasting have not been reached pending completion of all aspects of this investigation.

In the UK all new developments, including mines, quarries, tunnels, etc., are subject to a system of planning control. If the use of explosives is anticipated then such developments will attract a number of so-called ‘planning conditions’ relating to the blasting operation. This paper will outline a ‘typical’ set of conditions and how operators ‘plan to comply’. British Standards relating to both human and structural response are also reviewed and contrasted to the typical planning conditions previously outlined.

The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

THE Institute of Metals Division of this Institute held a joint meeting with the American Foundry- men's Association on Oct. 5-9, at Syracuse, N. Y. The registration at this meeting was about 150. There were four meetings in all, three of which were in con- junction with the American Foundrymen's Association. This combination works out very nicely and gives the I Division a number of practical foundry papers that it would not get otherwise. The sessions were well attended and the discussion was active. The session on Monday morning was of a general nature and consisted of the following subjects : " Refractory Problems in the Non-ferrous Electric Furnace Casting Shop, " "Temperature Control of Non-ferrous Alloys," "Atomized Coal System of Non-ferrous Melting," "Material Handling in a Brass Foundry." On Tuesday morning, the session was on "Aluminum and Its Alloys." The paper on permanent mold castings created a large amount of discussion, in fact so much that it had to be renewed after the close of the regular program. Aluminum is assuming a more important place every year and adds greatly to the program as a whole. One of the most remarkable meetings that this Division has ever had was held on Tuesday at noon in the form of a Round Table discussion, headed by G. K. Elliott, chairman of the Division, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Elliott divided the members present, numbering about 80, into groups as they were seated at the tables. Each of these groups suggested a topic for discussion. They were as follows : "Fluxes on Market ;" "Simplification of Alloys;" "Pyrometric Control;" "Effect of Gas- sing Metal and Control;" "Barium Sulfate Added to Electric Furnace to Create Slight Oxidation to Remove Aluminum and Silicon;" and" Nickel in Brass."

Polish coal mines are characterized by severe geological conditions and the co-occurrence of natural hazards. These hazards are associated with methane and dust emissions during mining processes which can provide methane, dust or methane-dust explosions. Besides, there are such natural hazards as gas and rock outbursts, rock bursts, spontaneous combustion of coal and environmental heat load. The mutual influences of various geological conditions, as well as the natural hazards, intensify the increase of the methane explosion hazard. The occurrence of methane explosions in the Polish mining industry between 2013 and 2108 are analyzed. Fatal accidents are compared with similar events in the global mining industry. The methods of preventing the explosion hazard as well as methane emission control in the Polish coal mining sector are presented. Methane hazard prevention should be adapted to levels and other natural hazards, especially those related to ventilation of underground mine. The methods of preventing methane emissions into mine excavations are often contrary to the means of preventing other ventilation-related hazards in the underground mine, e.g. the prevention of spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf of longwall panel. Therefore, the design of longwall panels should be preceded by a detailed analysis of the results of both methane emission prediction and forecast of other ventilation-related hazards.

TIMBER supports for large underground cavities are temporary expedients until the permanent filling can be put in. Nevertheless, timber supports are very necessary in some form. The general problem is to support the cavity in all directions withthe minimum of timber, disposed in the strongest way. The simplest way of filling an irregular space with timber sets is to form triangles.The right-angled isosceles triangle (Fig. 1) leads to the true square set, in which caps are equal to struts. The right-angled unequal-sided triangle and the scalene isosceles triangle (Fig. 2) lead to the oblong square set, where caps are longer than struts.The scalene triangle (Fig. 4) leads to the rhombic or oblique set. The equilateral triangle leads to the hexagon set (Fig. 3), in which the caps and struts are all equal. These five plane figures, the triangle, square, rectangle, rhomb and hexagon, are the only figures that will completely fill any irregular plane figure, without interstices. Hexagon sets were first suggested by the writer in 1902 to a mine manager at Broken Hill, who did not see his way to use them.

This study investigates the identity and relative importance of factors affecting the future demand for phosphate rock, potash, and nitrogen. The main objective is to analyze demand relationships for these chemical raw materials for some specified past period, and to utilize this information to make projections of consumption into some designated future period. The end-use approach is used, which divides total consumption of each chemical raw material into agricultural, industrial, and export use. Multiple regression analysis is employed to statistically measure the relative effects of the different factors on consumption in each end use. The general method centers on the construction of a consumer demand model, the fitting of the respective equations in the model, and the interpretation of the statistical results. Direct and cross price elasticities of demand are computed for each end use of the chemical raw materials. These give an insight into expected changes in consumption with respect to given changes in price. The results of this study indicate that price, consumer income, and level of technology are factors which measurably affect consumption of chemical raw materials. For phosphate rock and potash, the agricultural and industrial end uses showed an inelastic demand, whereas for nitrogen, all end uses (including export use) exhibited an elastic demand. Among the chemical raw materials, average annual growth of consumption of nitrogen for agricultural and export uses to 1980 is expected to be notably higher than that for phosphate rock and potash.

The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. THE classification and preparation of non-ferrous scrap metals is a subject of interest to every individual and corporation that employs in its processes of manufacture non-ferrous metals and alloys and accumulates in such manufacture scrap from these materials for disposition in the form of turnings, borings, short ends, punchings, clippings, grindings, washings, etc. All too frequently the disposition of such scrap is left to individuals who have no knowledge of the subject either from a metallurgical or a commercial standpoint, or both. Much money is thus lost which with a little more intelligent effort might be saved, and in this day of fierce competition and small profits such an opportunity cannot be ignored. It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

This study consists of four descriptive Sections covering respectively: a state-of-the-art literature survey on ungrounded and grounded power systems, a report on literature pertaining to human threshold limits of electric shock, an analysis of the performance requirements of isolated systems and a section on design and performance specifications for an isolated system the final section includes copies, and translations where applicable, of the most important articles on foreign mining practice as well as some technical publications which could be difficult to obtain elsewhere. Section 2 - Literature Survey In analyzing the available literature on ungrounded systems it became apparent that too strict an interpretation of Section 1.1 of the Contract would limit the survey in both period of time analyzed and in available literature which discussed several types of power systems. Therefore, the survey was expanded to cover approximately the past twenty-year period and to cover literature which addressed itself to both ungrounded and grounded power system operation. Section 2 gives a brief summary of this literature survey and lists the important papers and books which were examined.

Techniques have been developed for the dissolution of a wide range of rocks and minerals by a sodium peroxide sinter process. A olarge number of elements are determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and other elements such as arsenic and sulphur are determined by chemical analytical methods. The methods adopted to overcome inter-element and ionization effects on the atomic absorption results are discussed.

N order to attempt to arrive at a better under-Jl standing of the whole basic problem of sintering, these remarks will serve as an introduction for discussion that is included and will, perhaps, help to isolate specific questions which need to be answered or to suggest some definite avenues of investigation which should be followed. To bring some sort of logical order into the presentation, I will consider the various types of interaction between the metal to be sintered and the atmosphere which surrounds it, depending upon whether the phenomena are essentially chemical or physical in nature. For example, when the only necessary criterion for the satisfactory sintering of a certain powder is the removal of an oxide skin, then the problem of choosing a suitable atmosphere is primarily chemical; however, if a special surface condition as a consequence of the oxide skin removal is necessary for particularly effective sintering, then the problem becomes a physical one. Of course, the two aspects overlap considerably, but it may be possible to make a distinction in principle if not in practice. The chemical characteristics of the phenomena will be emphasized, since these are the better known. Metal-gas reactions involved in sintering are controlled primarily by the thermodynamics of the processes involved. In which direction will a reaction go and how far before it stops? The answer is to be found in the magnitude of the free energy change associated with the reaction. If a constituent is to be removed from the specimen as completely as possible or if a constituent is to be formed in the specimen as completely as possible, then one chooses conditions which are far from equilibrium so that the reaction is driven toward completion. On the other hand, if the composition is to be maintained at a desired value, then conditions are adjusted as closely as possible to the equilibrium point. This aspect of the problem is susceptible to quite precise analysis, provided, of course, that the significant reactions can be recognized and the required thermodynamic data are available. Conversely, if one asks how fast the reaction goes or how far it proceeds in a given time, the answer is frequently much more difficult to answer in quantitative terms. Yet the rate-con trolling factors of the reactions may be of primary importance in the success of a particular operation, especially where competing processes are at work. Both equilibrium and rate factors must be understood if a clear picture is to be obtained. For instance, in a process for carburizing titanium dioxide, is the difficulty of obtaining a stoichiometric Tic due to a true limitation of the equilibrium or simply to a very slow rate of reaction? An example of this appears in the work of Kalish and Mazza.' They showed that the oxygen content of sintered iron compacts was lower when sintered in pure hydrogen than in the case where the hydrogen was diluted with either argon or nitrogen. The equilibrium oxygen content of the iron would be the same in the two cases, since it is determined by the ratio of the partial pressures of water vapor and hydrogen and this pressure ratio is unchanged by dilution. The rate of oxygen removal, however, under the conditions of a constantly replaced furnace atmosphere, depends upon diffusion and thus upon the concentration of hydrogen in the furnace atmosphere. Possibly the clearest way to illustrate the interplay of these two factors is to consider in more detail some of the typical metal-gas reactions. INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1·0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2·0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. "The Johnny Mountain gold mine in northern British Columbia, owned by skyline Gold Corporation, has been in operation since August 1988. Mill operating difficulties at the start of the operation resulted in a depleted cash flow situation and quick improvements were required to generate a self-sustaining financial basis of operation. In October 1988, Melis Engineering Ltd. was contracted to identify metallurgical difficulties, implement necessary modifications, and undertake mill operations and personnel training in order to achieve production targets.This paper presents the operating difficulties which existed at start-up and describes the methodology used to overcome production problems. Metallurgical testing results are described along with the modifications made to the milling circuit to suit ore metallurgy. Plant changes led to the operation of a simple gravity/flotation circuit to recover gold as bullion and in a copper concentrate. Operation of the originally installed cyanidation circuit was discontinued. This contributed to substantial savings in operating costs and virtually eliminated environmental problems. PROPERRTY LOCATION ANR DESCRIPTIONThe Johnny Mountain mine site is located in northern British Columbia along the Iskuit River about 60 km east of Wrangell, Alaska and 275 km north of Terrace, B. C.. A location map is presented in Figure 1 and a site plan is shown in Figure 2. The complex is located on a mountain plateau about 3, 600 feet above sea level. The plateau is flanked to the north by Johnny Mountain and surrounded on the other sides by steep cliffs."
