In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested.

Concrete is one of the decisive construction materials, also for the AlpTransit Gotthard Tunnel. The client has many requirements, and many are the solution possibilities that concrete systems can offer. Cement producers and concrete admixture manufacturers have been challenged to design and test jointly concrete systems for cast and sprayed concrete. The testing operation followed the scenario laid out by the Gotthard AlpTransit Project management?s instructions ?Testing system for concrete mixes.? Various supplier teams have applied for the concrete systems for sections Amsteg/Erstfeld, section Sedrun and/or sections Bodio/Faido and have also followed through with the tests. As was to be expected, the rate of failed mixes matched the level of the requirements. Thanks to this system, it was nevertheless possible to test complete concrete systems for all sections and to get them approved. The joint ventures tendering for the contracts were allowed to include only approved mix designs in their bids. Workability and durability are of paramount importance for cast and sprayed concrete mixes. Durability is influenced by the chosen mix design where binder concept and well-defined water content, i.e., impermeability, are determinant. Aggregates for AlpTransit are to be considered as given. The concrete mix design also determines workability. Because ambient conditions and also requirements with respect to workability are subjected to change, it is necessary that the mix designs include control measures. The choice and number of components for the concrete systems (cement, additives and admixtures) allow adaptation to changing conditions. For AlpTransit such adaptive measures must meet very strict requirements.

Humankind's interest in measurement of human physical strength probably dates to the first humans. At that time, life was truly a struggle in which the fittest survived. To a great extent, fittest meant strongest. Interestingly, current interest in human physical strength in the workplace stems from 1970-1980s vintage research demonstrating that persons with adequate physical strength are less likely to be injured on physically demanding jobs. Survival in many modem workplaces may still be a case of survival of the strongest. There is, however, a flip side to this issue - that persons with limited strength are more likely to be injured on "hard" jobs. To address this problem, we can apply what we know about physical strength to job design. "Hard" jobs can be redesigned to be within the physical strength capability of most people. Since physical strength is important to these jobs, we must find ways to quantify it through testing. This publication concerns human physical strength testing. Its purpose is not to recommend any particular type of testing, but rather to describe the types of testing available and their uses. It is up to each individual user of strength testing to decide which testing technique is most appropriate for his or her particular application. This booklet discusses four types of strength testing: isometric, isoinertial, psychophysical, and isokinetic.

The Western Mining Resource Center (WMRC) at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) received a grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to perform a study that will help reduce the amount of respirable dust generated from the cutting of coal. The study is based upon laboratory testing and field experience. This information is being used to develop a new cutterhead design in conjunction with Joy Mining Machinery. The new cutterhead design is being evaluated with existing computer models developed at CSM. The new continuous miner cutterhead will be tested at the Twenty Mile Coal Company’s Foidal Creek Mine. Baseline testing with the current cutterhead will also be performed. This paper presents laboratory test results, design methodology, and test results performed to date.

Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.

The first paper4 discusses the history of placer mining in the Western States and the production of placer gold, geology of placer deposits, location of placer claims on public lands, sampling and estimation of gold placers, and classification of placer-mining methods, together with hand-shoveling and ground-sluicing. The second papers deals with hydraulicking, sluice boxes and riffles, recovery of gold and platinum from placer concentrates, treatment of amalgam, and marketing of placer gold. The discussion of sluice boxes and subsequent subjects in the second paper applies to all forms of placer mining. The present paper treats of dredging and other forms of mechanical handling of placer gravels, and drift mining.

Studies were carried out to investigate the ultimate soil pressure acting on pile(s) undergoing lateral soil movement in soft clay. A special apparatus has been designed to apply a uniform rectangular profile of lateral soil movement on the rigid pile(s) with pinned head and tip conditions to obtain the ultimate soil pressure. The piles were 16 mm (5/8 in) in diameter. For the pile group tests, the behavior of different number of piles (2, 3, 4, 6 and 9), pile arrangements and center-to-center spacings (3 and 6 diameters) were investigated. In this paper, the group factors of 11 combinations of number of piles, pile arrangements and pile spacings are presented. The group factors are given for individual piles in a pile group as well as for the entire group. Generally, the group factors of individual piles in a group varied significantly according to pile spacing in both directions, and pile arrangement; the group factor of the whole group reduced with an increasing number of piles, and increased with increasing pile spacing. For a pile group with the same number of piles but different pile arrangement, no significant difference was found in the group factors for the entire group.

"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. In a recognized procedure, a sample of ore is mixed with up to 15 g of sodium peroxide in an iron crucible and swirled over the full heat of a Meker burner for 7 min. "Finely disseminated minerals in ores require intensive size reduction to achieve sufficient liberation for the subsequent concentration process. The use of small grinding media in conventional ball mills as a replacement for the usual 2.5 to 3.8 cm balls (1.0 to 1.5 in) produces a finer size distribution at a lower power drawn by the mill motor. However, the conditions ensuring a successful application of using small media for fine grinding are still not fully understood and some plants faced issues to keep the newly introduced steel charge inside the mill during industrial trials. The retention conditions of small media are investigated in this paper using a continuously operated 40 x 40 cm laboratory grinding mill. The tests assess the effect of the steel charge level, the slurry solids concentration and the feed rate on the rate of ejection of the grinding media. The dominant variable is found to be the filling of the mill with the grinding media, followed by the mill feed rate. Results show that increasing the slurry solids concentration within a grinding mill may be favorable for the retention of the media inside the mill.IntroductionProcessing of complex ores often requires the use of fine grinding to liberate finely disseminated minerals. Grinding requirements for a P80 of less than 0.02 mm are not uncommon, and different grinding mills are available for such application (Leonida, 2014; Pease et al., 2006; Davey, 2006; Orford et al., 2006; Nesset et al., 2006). Even conventional horizontal ball mills charged with of 2.5 cm or larger grinding media can be used for fine grinding. However, simulation (Orford and al., 2006) and plant observations (Alves and L-Bouchet, 2005; Brisette, 2010; Brisette and Roman, 2012) demonstrated the advantages of using smaller grinding media in terms of size reduction and energy consumption."

"Buzwagi Gold Mine (BGM) is operated by Acacia Mining and located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of central Tanzania. The mine treats a sulphide copper-gold ore to produce gold in form of doré bars and a concentrate containing gold, copper and silver. The BGM comminution circuit includes a primary crushing stage with a gyratory crusher and two grinding circuits using a Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and a ball mill. Currently, the grinding circuits are inefficient in achieving the aspired product fineness of xP,80 = 125 µm even at low to normal throughputs (450-600 t/h). An optimization study of the circuit performance was conducted to improve product fineness through circuit surveys, experimental lab work and simulations. The analysis of survey data revealed inefficient grinding operation characterized by ball mill product (xP,80 > 400 µm) coarser than designed and higher hydrocyclone cut sizes (xT > 200 µm), too. In MODSIM several options were simulated such as reduction of vortex finder and apex diameters, reduction of SAG screen aperture, and modification of cyclone feed density. An improvement of product fineness could be achieved by simulation of the cumulative changes but it was also concluded that the current equipment cannot achieve the target. Further simulations showed that a second ball mill might help to achieve the desired fineness as well as an increase of grinding throughput by up to 26 %. INTRODUCTION Simulation of comminution, particularly grinding and classification, has received great attention for many years, due to the fact that the unit operation is by far the most important both in terms of energy consumption as well as overall plant performance (King, 2001; Wills et al., 2006). The use of simulation is advantageous due to low cost as well as its ability to consider many variables simultaneously. Moreover, there are some benefits for optimizing grinding operations by simulation like decreased unit operating costs, increased capacity, and improved performance of downstream processes due to improved feed size distribution. This paper presents an optimization study for the grinding efficiency at Buzwagi Gold Mine. This was achieved through three full scale circuit surveys, lab work and simulations with MODSIM."

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

"AbstractIn driven piles, the gradual dissipation of excess pore water pressure and consequently the soil setup significantly contribute to increasing the pile capacity with time. The question is risen that how the scale differences affect the stress state variations around the pile shaft and at the pile tip? Would the CPT predictions better correlate with End-Of-Drive (EOD) or Beginning of Restrike (BOR) conditions? On the other hand, are the proposed a and ß parameters for clayey soils mostly predicting the EOD or BOR situation? The main objective of this paper is to back calculate the a and ß parameters from CPT profiles, pile Dynamic Load Tests (DLT) at the EOD and BOR as well as Static Load Tests (SLT) and evaluate how they compare with those suggested in literature. Four precast 400 mm square concrete piles driven in North Azadegan Oilfield in Khuzestan Province were selected for the comparisons. CPT test results were available from the extensive geotechnical investigation at the study site. DLT tests using PDA were carried out at EOD, 1 day and 14-day BOR on all the 4 piles. All the piles were SLT tested as well. The UniCone software was used to estimate the tip and shaft resistances using 4 methods including the Dutch, Eslami & Fellenius, LCPC and Schmertmann. The results indicate that the a-method based on the proposed values in literature has predicted a shaft capacity of 90% of the 14-day BOR. This is while the ß-method has predicted a shaft capacity equivalent to 1-day BOR results only. Therefore, both methods have under-predicted the shaft capacities compared to real capacities measured after the significant soil setup in the study area. Two of the CPT methods have underestimated, one has overestimated and one has matched the estimated 60-day capacity."

However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this thesis was to develop and validate a mechanically-based model of the deformation and failure process of a clay shale, namely Opalinus Clay (OPA), with particular focus on the influence of anisotropy on the short-term response of circular tunnels. To achieve this goal, a hybrid continuum-discontinuum numerical approach was developed in combination with new field measurements from the Mont Terri underground research laboratory. The response of OPA during the excavation of a full-scale emplacement (FE) test tunnel was characterized by geodetic monitoring of wall displacements, radial extensometers and longitudinal inclinometers. The deformation measurements indicated strong directionality induced by the combined effect of in-situ stress field and bedding planes striking parallel to the tunnel axis, with the most severe deformation occurring in the direction approximately perpendicular to the material layering. Computer simulations were conducted using a newly-extended combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM), a numerical technique which allows the explicit simulation of brittle fracturing and associated seismicity. The numerical experimentation firstly focused on the laboratory-scale analysis of failure processes (e.g., acoustic activity) in brittle rocks, and on the role of strength and modulus anisotropy in the failure behaviour of OPA in tension and compression. The fracturing behaviour of unsupported circular excavations in laminated rock masses was then analyzed under different in-situ stress conditions. Lastly, the proposed modelling methodology was applied to the aforementioned FE tunnel to obtain unique insights into the EDZ formation process around emplacement tunnels for nuclear waste. The calibrated numerical model suggested delamination along bedding planes and subsequent extensional fracturing as key mechanisms of the damage process potentially leading to buckling and spalling phenomena. Overall, the research findings are already having a direct impact on the preliminary design process of an underground repository for nuclear waste in Switzerland.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.
