A few studies on the relationship of the fusion temperature of the ash on coke to that of the corresponding coal have been made on commercial high-temperature cokes. H. J. Rose3/ in 1921 compared the fusion temperatures of the ashes of 10 coals and the cokes produced from them and concluded that they were in such hose agreement that either figure could be used. More recently, Quarfort4/ found that the ash of coke fused at a somewhat lower temperature than that of the original coal. As the ash of a coal and that off tie coke produced therefrom have the same origin their chemical composition should be identical, provided that carbonization has not altered the inorganic, or ash-forming, constituents of the coal, and such alteration seems highly improbable. However, it has been shown5/ that coke is liable to contamination by iron during crushing and grinding preparatory to sampling. Pieters6/ found that coke ash was contaminated in this manner up to 0.4 percent. Extraneous iron would lower the ash-fusion temperature because such iron may form ferrous silicate, which is readily fusible.7/ These results provide a basis for the prediction that the ash of coke will fuse at a lower temperature than that of the corresponding coal, especially if the fine grinding of the coke was done by rubbing -surfaces of iron, as in a disk pulverizer or bucking plate.

This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational disease among workers in the mining industry. Previous studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that approximately 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/non-metal miners have a hearing impairment by age 50. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has determined that continuous mining machines rank first among all equipment in underground coal mining whose operators exceed 100% noise dosage. The conveying system is one of the principal noise sources on continuous mining machines, due to metal on metal impacts that occur between chain flights and the conveyor deck. A highly durable polyurethane coating has been developed for the chain flights to decrease noise generated by these impacts. A continuous mining machine retro-fitted with coated flight bars has achieved overall sound level reductions of 5-7 dB in a laboratory setting. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of this engineering noise control in reducing the noise exposure of continuous mining machine operators in an underground coal mine environment. The results show that the operator of a continuous mining machine utilizing the coated flights receives a predicted 35% reduction in total work shift noise dose.

In order to estimate the deformation and load distribution of a single pile subjected to dynamic horizontal load as well as vertical load, a simplified method of three-dimensional numerical analysis, KWaveHybrid program, is developed using a hybrid model. In the hybrid model, the pile is modelled as elastic beams, and the soil at each pile node is treated as springs and dashpots in both vertical and horizontal directions. KWaveHybrid is also able to analyse the static response of the pile. Validity of the newly developed program is examined through comparisons with theoretical values and horizontal dynamic and static pile load test results

This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of technology to stoping systems. Technology, because for the past 100 years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour-intensive industry. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology which is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping over the past 100 years can be categorized as follows: ?The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century, the cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter hand-held units which were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg ?Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s ?Hydraulic props as a support method arrived in the1960s ?Some people argue that tungsten carbide inserts were equally important. There have been a number of attempts to introduce different technologies into stoping, the most recent being trackless equipment. Where the stoping layout suits the technology it has been successful. There have been too many instances where a technology has been installed because it is fashionable. At the end of the day the outcome from change in the stoping systems has to be safer and more profitable mining systems. It is the contention of the author that change is only likely to be effective if it is supported by the introduction and application of appropriate technology.

Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

The behavior of wire ropes used in hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analyzed. This report provides a generalized mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix; the other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6×19 Seale, independent wire rope core (IWRC), right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires, which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion, were determined from this model. The effects of strain deformation were analyzed, resulting in a system of equations for determining the structural parameters of the deformed rope. In future work, the model could be used to analyze wire ropes of different constructions so that a more scientifically based understanding of rope behavior can be established.

"Jim Macdonald was promoted from Waterworks Engineer to Streetworks Engineer for the Wellington City Council. He thus took over the City quarry and responsibility for its performance. The crushing plant needed upgrading and he thought it would not be difficult to make a crusher to overcome a problem. If he had a longer association with the quarry industry he would have used conventional methods and equipment, so his invention arose from a fresh view of crushing.He invented the Barmac Rotopactor after observing a wear resistant chute with a lining of dead stone trapped above a piece of angle. This idea led to a rotor lined with trapped stone, rotating on a vertical spindle. In trying - a model rotor he observed the impact against a circular rill of stone in half an oil drum and thus was started a very fertile new area of developement in comminution. The writer helped in the developement and shares in the patents. Jim died in January 1982, just as the machine was becoming known and some 200 were in use in various countries. Most were working in hard rock quarries et that time but recent uses have carried the machine into the mining and mineral processing field. This paper is directed at that industry."

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. "On July 26, 2000, the Canada Foundation for Innovation announced an award of $1.3 M dollars for The Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials, CERM3, at The University of British Columbia. Additional funding was also provided by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund ($1.3 M) and the UBC Stewart Blusson Fund ($0.7 M). Annual industrial grants and contracts are providing support funding for the on-going research projects. Corporate membership in CERM3 entitles each participant to a seat on the technical advisory committee (TAC) as well as access to the five laboratory facilities currently under construction. Both the federal and provincial governments will also participate in the TAC through NRCan-CANMET and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines, respectively. CERM3’s mission is:• to develop innovative methods to deal with environmental problems created by mining activity;• to promote sustainable development as a hallmark of management decision-making; • to produce mining and processing engineers with the required environmental skills; and• to enhance the image of mining in society as a vibrant and necessary component of a modern economy and society which disturbs the environment for the benefit of mankind.CERM3 brings together a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from over 12 departments at The University of British Columbia (UBC) to work on mining-related environmental problems. These include: chemistry; soil sciences; chemical and biological engineering; earth and ocean sciences; microbiology; civil engineering; electrical engineering; metals and materials engineering; mechanical engineering; mining and mineral processing, the Westwater Research Centre; the Institute for Resources and the Environment; and the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. The centre intends to interact with scientists from industry, governments and other universities across Canada and around the world. CERM3 aims to become Canada’s leading environmental research facility for the mining industry. This paper describes the evolution of CERM3 and its coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to mining and the environment. Some of CERM3’s research projects include:• developing new protocols for environmental analyses to provide consistent and reliable assays;• isolating a natural virus for Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and other bacteria responsible for acid rock drainage (ARD);• designing bio-remediation and adsorption techniques for mine effluents;• promoting and enhancing the use of hydrometallurgy to reduce environmental pollution;• examining new approaches to comminution to decrease energy consumption;• developing a magnetically levitated hoisting system to reduce the footprint of a mine operation;• building a state-of-the-art supercomputer network laboratory for mine/mill simulations; and• designing intelligent bulkheads to seal tunnels following mine closure to survive for 1000 years.This latter project involves the establishment of a research station at the Britannia mine site, 45 km north of Vancouver, which will provide a full-scale facility to design the “Millennium Plug” and contribute directly to the solution to one of North America’s worst ARD-contaminated sites."

Vertical expansion of existing structures frequently requires foundation retrofitting to enhance the capacity of existing foundations for supporting additional loads. Owing to their small diameter, a variety of suitable drilling methods available for installation, and smaller installation equipment capable of operating under limited headroom conditions, micropiles are often preferred for foundation retrofitting. This paper presents a case history demonstrating application of micropiles to underpin the existing foundation of the Washington D.C. Children?s National Medical Center (CNMC) for its future expansion. Located at 111 Michigan Avenue in northwest Washington, DC, portions of the hospital currently extend five stories above grade and three levels below-grade as parking garages. The hospital intends to expand the surgical wing up to the current build out (five stories) above the remaining portion of the existing parking garage. The original foundations consist of 80-ton Raymond Step-Tapered piles. New loading on the foundations required each Raymond pile to be capable of supporting 150 tons. Results from quick load tests on existing piles indicated that two entire column lines (Column Line A and B) would experience loads beyond their capacity, requiring enhancement of the existing foundation at these locations. The design and construction of the foundation upgrading work was particularly challenging due to various project constraints related to a high groundwater table, micropile installation under limited head room, and ensuring that the parking garage remained fully operational for the entire duration of construction. The paper presents the challenges faced during testing of existing foundations amid a high groundwater table, design developments of underpinning options to support the additional column loads, difficulties and challenges encountered during installation of the micropiles and construction of the micropile pilecaps, and value engineering options developed during various phases of the project. Understanding that micropiles are often a preferred option for foundation retrofitting, the case history is expected to provide a baseline design approach and innovative solutions to typical challenges faced during construction, thereby reducing potential cost overruns during design development and construction of similar future projects.

Bolting large sheets of wire mesh screen (WMS) to the roof of underground mines prevents injuries due to rock falls. However, WMS can be heavy and awkward to lift and transport, and may result in significant spinal loading. Accordingly, six male subjects (mean age =45.8 years + 7.5 SD) were recruited to lift WMS in a laboratory investigation of the biomechanical demands. Biomechanical modeling was used to estimate external moments about L5-S1 for sixteen lifting tasks, using two sizes of WMS. Full-size WMS involved a two-person lift, while half-size WMS involved a one-person lift. Lifts were performed under 168 cm and 213 cm vertical space. Restriction in vertical space increased the maximum L5-S1 extensor moment from 254 to 274 Nm and right lateral bending moment from 195 to 251 Nm. Lifting full sheets of screen (as opposed to half sheets) resulted in an average 33 Nm increase in L5-S1 extensor moment. The L5-S1 extensor moment was increased by an average of 44 Nm (18%) when lifting screens positioned flat on the floor compared to an upright position. Relevance to industry: Large flexible materials are commonly lifted in industrial work environments, and may involve the efforts of two or more workers. The current study examines the low back loading associated with lifting large flexible screens and presents recommendations to reduce spine loading.

Three electric arc furnaces (EAFs) were constructed by Union Carbide at Tubatse Ferrochrome (TFC) in1975. This plant was expanded to four furnaces at the East Plant in 1985 and the gas cleaning system was enlarged without taking flow dynamics into consideration. In order to improve competitiveness, TFC has increased furnace capacity, partially substituted coal for coke, and changed the charge mix. These changes increase the heat and dust load into the air pollution control (APC) system. TFC embarked on a project to improve the APC capacity by: ?Quantifying the required off-gas capacity ?Optimising the aerodynamic flow through the system by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) ?Converting the old Brandt Koyo top entry baghouses to bottom entry ?Upgrading the cleaning system ?Installing Gore-tex® ePTFE membrane filter bags The estimation of required off-gas capacity is traditionally done by rule-of-thumb methods such as specific extraction. A more elegant evaluation method was developed for simulating the effects of changes in charge mix on the furnace reaction gas volume and the APC system. Reaction gases are calculated by modelling the reactions taking place in the furnace and off-gas volumes are compared to both fan and baghouse capacity. This enables identification of bottle-necks in the off-gas system. CFD techniques were utilized to evaluate geometric imbalances and propose solutions to ensure optimal use of off-gas capacity. The system modifications were completed over several months and the modified equipment went into service in May2006.
