Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. 2We use field measurements to quantify physical processes that accompany different types of mining explosions. The data sets collected include three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture material and those that cast material. Our goal is a physical understanding of these sources for the purposes of optimizing blasting practices.

Significant advances have been made in the design of centrifugal slurry pumps that are used for pumping high-density viscous and paste slurries. This paper presents the results of a series of centrifugal pump performance tests that were conducted using an FLSmidth 6 x 4 Krebs millMAX centrifugal pump. The pump was fitted with a dry mechanical seal to prevent dilution of the slurry from gland service water, as the theology of the slurry is sensitive to small changes in slurry density. Tests were done using paste kaolin slurry with Bingham yield stress values between 578-1 120 Pa and plastic viscosities between 728 and 1491 mPa.s. The viscous properties of the paste during each pump test were measured using a rotational viscometer. Pump head and efficiency de-rating were measured and compared to the correlations of Walker and Goulas (1984). The test data shows the pump's best-efficiency point (BEP) changes and shifts to the left of the performance curve. The pump efficiency decreases as the slurry yield stress increases. The head de-rating data shows more head de-rating at the low flow rates compared to the high flow rates for the high viscosity slurry, which is in line with the findings of Walker and Goulas (1984). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to pump very viscous, high yield stress slurries with limited head and efficiency de-rating using centrifugal pumps, provided that positive suction conditions are maintained at all times.

The basic concepts and processes of soil and rock melting as applied to excavation technology are reviewed. The electrically heated, small diameter prototype penetrator development sequence is presented. Emphasis is placed on the different methods of handling the fluid rock and soil melts and their significance in providing new solutions in hole support and debris handling problems. The refractory materials requirements, penetrator life and electrical heater technology are presented. Consolidating penetrators, which form stable glass-lined holes in low density rocks and soils, require no debris removal and will find applications in horizontal holes for utilities, cables, and pipeline installations. Extruding penetrators are being developed to make holes in dense, hard rocks. Melt is conditioned into a variety of debris forms, i.e., glass rods, pellets or rock wool, selected to match appropriate debris handling systems. Unique use in drilling into very hot rock or magma for geothermal exploration or production wells is projected. Some of the results of laboratory and field tests of these devices are compared with theoretically derived operating performance. Coring-consolidating penetrators for geological sampling in alluvium are projected to larger diameter self-propelled and guided coring devices for prospecting along proposed tunnel alignments. Application to the melting of annular shafts for pipeline support piles in difficult conditions such as permafrost has been scoped. Conceptual design studies of large diameter tunneling equipment have indicated the system contributions and economic aspects of rock melting relative to material comminution, wall and roof support and materials handling.

The smelting plant and equipment at Mount Isa, as originally designed and built, was described by J. M. Callow (1) *.F. A. Forward (2) described alterations and additions to the plant and discussed the metallurgy of mixed carbonate-sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa, prior to 1933, in the Proceedings of this Institute.In 1933, A. F. McAskill (3) gave full mechanical details of the plant in a paper presented to the Institution of Engineers, Aust.FLOW SHEETSFig. No. 1 represents the present general flow sheet. Forward's (2) flow sheet is reproduced here as Fig. lA, and will serve for comparison in depicting subsequent deletions from, and alterations and additions to, the plant.Fig. No. 2 presents the daily tonnage flow sheet of 1939 practice.ALTERATIONS SINCE 1933General. Many changes in metallurgy and operation have taken place, particularly subsequent to March, 1935, when the treatment of a mixture of carbonate and sulphide ores was discontinued and the mill commenced operating on all-sulphide ore. This alteration brought about the elimination of gravity concentration-Jigs and Tables and resulted in the production of all-floatation concentrates of a very fine sizing. Refer Table No. 2, page?) The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

The Lafayette Bluff tunnel, currently under construction for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), will be among the widest highway tunnels in the United States. The 199-meter tunnel is being constructed in a closely jointed, variably weathered diabase rock mass. Cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 4 meters to 27 meters, and is less than the tunnel excavated width of 18.3 meters for about 60 percent of its length. These factors dictated special support and lining design, limitations on excavation sizes and required sequences for support installation. Tunnel excavation is by controlled blasting, with multiple top headings and bench. Rock support and lining consists of external portal beams, rockbolts and reinforced shotcrete. A final concrete lining provides structural support for the rock mass and the membrane waterproofing system.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is sensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature. The precipitation of dissolved silver is a diffusion controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions. In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

South Deep Mine is currently undertaking numerous voidfilling projects using low strength aerated cement products. Representative samples from one such site, were taken and tested for the load deformation behaviour under uniaxial loading conditions. The process of sample collection, laboratory preparation and testing are explained in detail. The results of testing were analyzed and the critical aspects pointed out as a design consideration to be implemented as part of the quality control and assurance program. Design aspects and underground application of the aerated cement product are discussed for the particular site on 58 level SV1. A simple instrumentation has been designed and installed to enable monitoring of any future movements in this area. A quality control and assurance process has been formulated enabling all aspects of the support installation in this excavation to be signed off.

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

Markets and Production Beryllium (Be), an extremely light metal, is used in many specialty applications. It the lightest element in Group 2A of the periodic table, with a specific gravity of 1.85 gm/cc, and a high melting point of 12850C (Calvert, 2004). The functional properties of beryllium are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion from acids, and electrical and thermal conductivity. The ability to reflect neutrons and transmit x-rays, makes beryllium irreplaceable in uses such as precision optical components, inertial guidance systems, and in nuclear reactors (Anon, 1993). Beryllium is used in Cu alloys to strengthen and reduce corrosion in copper wire, and in lightweight oxide ceramics that are used as heat sinks, and as electrical insulators. Pneumatic flotation is rapidly becoming accepted in the main stream of flotation techniques. Imhoflot is a pneumatic flotation process that in recent years has undergone progressive development. It combines short flotation times with excellent selectivity by employing intense pre-aeration and dispersion. K+S GmbH (K+S), Germany, has installed a complete Imhoflot flotation plant at its Sigmundshall plant. The plant treats hard salt consisting of sylvine, halite, anhydrite and kieserite. The reason for selection was that Imhoflot achieves the required grades of plus 60 weight percent K2O whilst offering lower operating costs than conventional flotation installations.

Copper, sulphur, nickel, cobalt, palladium, silver, and gold can be recovered from the copper sulphide precipitated from the "copper boil" of the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process used at Western Mining Corporation's Kwinana nickel <refinery. The method is based on an oxidative ammonia leach of copper, nickel, and the precious metals at temperatures below 40°C to produce, in part, elemental sulphur, in the residue. This is followed by heating to decompose thiosulphate and remove some ammonia with precipitation of some of the copper, palladium, gold, and silver. Addition of sulphur dioxide to pregnant liquor precipitates copper, as either Chevreul's salt or copper(I) ammonium sulphite, together with the remaining gold and silver. Less than 10 per cent of the dissolved palladium and less than 1 per cent of nickel and cobalt precipitate to this stage.In one option, the Chevreul's salt is dissolved in a solution of copper(II) sulphate, acetonitrile, and water to generate a solution of copper(I) sulphate. Gold and silver do not dissolve. The solution of copper(I) sulphate is thermally disproportionated by distilling acetonitrile to give exceptionally pure copper powder, with desirable characteristics for powder metallUrgy. Nickel, cobalt, and ammonium sulphate are recovered from the motherliquor of the Chevreul's salt precipitation by return to the Sherritt-Gordon process, where recovery procedures already exist. Palladium is recycled for eventual removal as a sulphide with the gold and silver.In the other option, solid copper(I) ammonium-sulphite is <thermally disproportionated in water at 150°C to copper powder.
