"An introduction and case study of Mintek's latest generation of Milling Circuit controller, the MillStarTM with IES (Interpreting Expert System) is presented. This paper also describes as a case study its installation on a Southern African base metals concentrator plant which has demonstrated improved operation, greatly reduced variation in product quality, as well as increased capacity and availability of the circuit.In this case study, the MillStarTMw as installed along with several other enhancements, including hydrocyclone underflow monitoring, product particle size estimation and flotation circuit stabilisation. MillStarTM utilised the particle size measurement to control grind to within 2% of setpoint, all the while ensuring sump level control, density control as well as mill power optimisation. Mintek' s expertise in the modelling of tumbling mills allowed the development of a specialised optimising controller that ensured the mill was kept in the most efficient operating region.MillStarTM augments the automatic control with useful user interface features, such as on-line trends of any logged variables, historic data warehousing and retrieval and production summary reports.A novel feature that distinguishes the MillStarTMi s the IES (Interpreting Expert System). This is a feature of the software that works with the automatic control code to generate explanations for control actions made by the controller. Often complex control systems are mysterious in nature, reducing trust and eventually resulting in them being switched off. On 26 August 1971, the Bureau of Mines, through the Spokane Mining Research Center at Spokane, Washington, approved initiation of the evaluation of oscillatory energy toward enhancing flow of polymer into shale. The effort was an outgrowth of work performed under Bureau of Mines Contract H0210055, "Feasibility Study of Surface Impregnation equipment for the Chemical Stabilization of Coal Mine Structures," wherein feasibility of the impregnation concept was expressed and the detailed design of a machine for impregnation of coal mine roofs with polymer (under static pressure head) accomplished. Under these efforts, the potential enhance¬ment of polymer uptake into the shale thru superposition of oscillatory energy on the static impregnation pressure was suggested. A proposal for investigation of this phenomena entitled "Feasibility Study of the Application of Oscillatory Energy as an Aid to Afford Chemical Stabilization" was presented to the Bureau whereupon a three month program for initiation of investigation was approved.

(New York Meeting, February, 1313.) I. INTRODUCTION. IN the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted.; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by beat are only approximations. Thus Kerl 1 gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, CO, Mn, Pb) SO4. More recent statements give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. Mechanical data from a rockbolt drilling machine, such as torque, thrust, revolution and stroke, are useful for understanding the geological and geomechanical conditions around roadways and hence selecting the optimum bolt type and density. Laboratory experiments showed that the level of torque or thrust reflects differences in rock type, with separation of strata and cracks appearing as a specific pattern. Algorithms of neural networks based on adaptive resonance theory and back-propagation were used to extract the pattern and estimate the location of discontinuities. For field testing in an underground coal mine, a prototype data acquisition system was attached to a portable drilling machine. Several sets of logging data from one locality were combined to construct a two-dimensional model of the strata, from which the slope angles of discontinuity faces could be estimated

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The Canyon Diggings zinc-lead deposit is in an area of structural deformation of sedimentary rooks in Newton County, Mo., 14 miles southeast of Joplin, within the southern limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling on the several tracts covering the area had been carried on sporadically since 1900, and incomplete records show a production of 1,341 tonsof zinc and lead concentrates. On the northern part of the deposit the predominant metal is which occurs as galena, cerrusite, and pyromorphite in broken chert near the surface. On the southern part, lead is subordinate to zinc, which occurs mainly as carbonate and silicate minerals in brecciated chert to a maximum depth of about 150 feet. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate that approximately 77 percent of the zinc and 50 percent of trio lead i8 in nonsulfide minerals resulting from the oxidation of sphalerite and galena. Between August 12, 1948, and October 5, 1949, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 85 holes aggregating 10,571 feet of bore and sampling two mill-tailings dumps and three mine dumps. Factual data on the investigation and the logs of Bureau of Mines drill holes are presented in this report.

The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. This study helps to reconcile the long-term debate on the timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of gold mineralisation in the Xiong’ershan and other districts along the southern margin of the NCC.CITATION:Li, J-W and Tang, K F, 2015. The degree of regional denudation is one of the most important factors for judging the preservation potential of ore deposits as it can be used in a predictive manner to help guide exploration. There are many methods available to judge the denudation degrees of mineral deposits. These include regional geochemical assessment methods, the characterisation of primary lithogeochemical halos, the thermoelectricity of pyrite and apatite fission-track methods. Each method has its specific principles, application scopes, limitations and successful cases. The discovery of ore at Wabana was quickly followed by the mining of the ore beds where they outcropped in the land areas. The third phase, as at present carried out, consists of extensive submarine operations, which were commenced in 1908, by driving a pair of slopes out under Conception bay, opening. the mine for a distance of a mile and a half from the shore. Two other slopes, now driven just beyond the shore line, are being sunk to the submarine territory where, it is generally recognized, huge reserves of ore lie under the bay. The process of erosion of the land, the solution and re-disposition of its iron-bearing minerals in thick beds of ore have been considered elsewhere, but these bear small relation to the physical forces which have acted upon the ore-beds since the deposition of the strata. These physical changes are made manifest by jointing and cleavage and faulting. The discussion of these, the relation they bear to each other, and to the folding of the strata, is the purpose of this article. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the formation in which the ore occurs, I include a general summary of the geology of Be!! island and its environs; also a description of conditions that prevailed during the period of deposition, so that the reader may appreciate some of the later changes that took place during or subsequent to its emergence from the sea, and the folding or tilting of the strata to the position it now occupies.

"One of the outstanding problems confronting automotive engineers in attempting to construct motors of greater economy is that of eliminating the ""knock"" from the operation of the engine. Recent investigations of this detonation or knock in internal-combustion engines, especially of the high-compression type, have demonstrated that it can be eliminated or reduced by decreasing the reaction velocity of combustion by adding small quantities of certain compounds to the gasoline, This makes it possible to use engines of a higher compression ratio, thereby greatly increasing the mileage per gallon of gasoline consumed. The savings in fuel reserves from increasing the proportion of crude oil marketable as motor fuel and in permitting the designing of more efficient engines are obvious.Ethyl gasoline, one of the widely used anti-knock fuels, is ordinary motor gasoline to which has been added 3 c.c. of tetraethyl lead and 2 c.c. of a halogen carrier, as ethylene dibromide or trichiorethylene, or approximately 0.06 per cent of the lead compound and 0.04 per cent of ethylene dibromide by volume. Ethyl gasoline should not be confused with ethyl fluid, which is a mixture of concentrated tetraethyl lead and ethylene dibromide in the prowler proportions for mixing with gasoline, but is not a motor fuel and is not sold to the public. Also tetraethyl lead is not a motor fuel, and likewise is act sold to the public."

Lac Cinquante is a mineralogically simple, vein-hosted uranium deposit in Archean basement rocks (Angikuni greenstone belt) that originally were unconformably overlain by Proterozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Baker Lake Group (BLG). Basement rocks are mainly pillowed and massive tholeiitic lavas (N-MORB) with interbedded tuff; overlying sedimentary rocks comprise a basal talus/fault breccia that grades upward into fluvial sedimentary rocks and subaerial, trachytic volcanic rocks; granite and porphyry dikes (Hudson and/or Nueltin granitoids) intrude the basement rocks. A typical section through the Main Zone comprises 1) laminated ‘tuff’, 2) altered (carbonate-hematite-chlorite) schistose ‘tuff’, 3) a pitchblende-bearing, breccia-vein, 4) altered ‘tuff’, and 5) laminated ‘tuff’. The vein comprises brecciated chlorite, hematite, and pitchblende with carbonate cementing the breccia. Graphitic ‘tuff’ with sulfide-stringer veinlets locally overlies or underlies the vein. Pitchblende also occurs in the altered rocks and in gash veins that cut basement rocks. U-Pb ages on pitchblende fall into two groups: one at 1828 } 29 Ma reflects primary uranium mineralization, and a second at 1437 } 31 Ma represents resetting. Pb-Pb chemical ages show other resetting events at 1260-1321Ma, 895 Ma, 741-813 Ma, and 660-706 Ma. One possible genetic model for the Lac Cinquante deposit involves leaching of uranium from granitoids and the BLG by basinal brines that migrated to depositional sites where graphitic rocks acted as a reductant. A second model requires that uranium was sole-sourced from the BLG and that granitoid rocks provided heat to drive the hydrothermal system, which leached and ultimately precipitated uranium. The deposit has characteristics similar to vein-type uranium deposits in the Beaverlodge District of Saskatchewan

The average gravity of the total crude petroleum produced in the United States during; the year 1927 was 32.2° A. P. I., or 0.864 in terms of specific gravity. A similar study, made by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1921, gave the average gravity at that time as 32.0.° To one who is accustomed to thinking of crude petroleum in terms of Oklahoma-Kansas and North Texas trades it may be surprising that the average gravity for the entire country is no higher than 32.20. The chief reason for this apparent discrepancy lies mainly in California production, which in 1927 amounted to over 25 per cent of the total, but which had an average gravity of only 24.10. A factor of less importance was Arkansas, which, though on the decline as a producing State, exerted a material effect by reason of its average gravity of 21.6°, the lowest for any State. In view of the heavy production of light crude in the Seminole area of Oklahoma during 1927, it would appear that the average gravity should have shown more than a 0.2 per cent gain over 1921. That this did not occur was due to the fact that in the interim between 1921 and 1927 important heavy oil discoveries were redo, notably the Smackover field of Arkansas.

Although the explosion-fatality record for the fiscal year 1944 showed considerable improvement over those of the preceding 4 years, it is still fur from creditable, and the coal-mining industry and agencies interested in the prevention of coal-mine accidents should not be satisfied until accidents from explosions and fires are eliminated. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions and fires, such disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. Despite this knowledge, far too many coal¬mine operators and employees continue to follow procedures that have resulted in disasters in the past. Included in the appendix to this circular are a number of safety measures designed to prevent coal-mine explosions and fires and metal-mine fires. Their adoption is essential if explosions and fires are to be prevented, as certainly they should be. An epidemic of disastrous mine fires of electrical origin during the past 2 years emphasizes the need for better methods of protection of underground electrical circuits. At present, committees of mining-electrical engineers, electrical-equipment manufacturers' representatives, and others are cooperating with the Bureau of Mines seeking means to solve this problem.

The quality of resin used in South African collieries is currently controlled according to South African Bureau of Standards, "SABS-1534:2002". It has however been found that resin which passed the SABS tests failed in underground short encapsulation pull tests. An investigation was therefore conducted to determine the characteristics of resins that are currently being used in collieries. A series of in situ short encapsulated pull tests was conducted to determine the effect of expired resin on support performance. The results showed that the longer the time after the expiry date the poorer the resin performance. A series of resin-torque tests has been performed using Anglo Coal's testing facility. The following parameters were investigated on different resins: Spinning speed, Mixing time, and Setting time. An attempt was also made to develop a new quality control procedure for resin. This procedure enables mining personnel to make sure that the quality of resin can provide the required support performance. The effect of spinning speed on resin performance was also investigated. The results showed the resin gelling times of resin decreases as the spinning speed increases. It is found that over-spinning with slow speed roofbolters may result in decreased bond strengths. It was found that a 30-second resin (10-second spin, 30-second hold) should never be spun more than 20 seconds, even with very slow roofbolters (100 rpm).

[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

Blasting cap precision is of major importance to advanced blast design. New technologies have introduced the use of microchips within detonator casings in the hope that the electronic control of the timing element will increase the accuracy of the cap and therefore improve the results of perimeter control blasting applications. The electronic detonators have proven to be accurate in timing tests done to date. They boast cap scatter results to microsecond accuracy, but the question is, does this degree of accuracy actually prove to be beneficial during practical use in the industry, or are conventional technologies applicable.

This paper presents a summary of allowable bearing pressures and skin friction values that have been used to design drilled pier foundations for support of high-rise structures in downtown Seattle, Washington. These design parameters are based upon a review of geotechnical reports and records of more than 20 building projects. The following pages present a description of the soils encountered at these sites including foundation bearings soils, and design bearing and friction values. The accumulated data is summarized in Table 1, and the locations of the buildings are shown in Figure 1. A detailed description of the construction of two belled drilled piers are presented illustrating typical methods and procedures used in downtown Seattle. The two cases are from the Washington State Convention and Trade Center (WSC&TC). SEATTLE AREA SOILS The Puget Sound area was subjected to several major glaciations during the Pleistocene Epoch. Glacial ice originated in the cordilleran and coastal mountains and the Vancouver Range of British Columbia. The maximum southward advance of ice reached the area about halfway between Olympia and Centralia. As a result of these glaciations, the Puget Lowland was filled to significant depths by glacial and non-glacial sediments during the Pleistocene.
