The backfilling of underground stopes is a common practice throughout the mining industry. The stresses imposed by the backfill on the surrounding rock mass need to be assessed because of their influence on ground stability and on the hydro-geochemical response of the fill material. There is, however, a complex interaction between the relatively soft backfill and the much stiffer adjacent rock mass. In recent years, the authors have presented results from investigations conducted on stress distributions (obtained numerically and analytically) in and around backfilled stopes with (sub)vertical walls. In this paper, the influence of stope inclination and of backfill properties is evaluated. Results indicate that, in general, the vertical and horizontal stresses in inclined stopes are close to, but somewhat smaller than the stresses in vertical stopes. Nonetheless, significant differences can be observed in some cases, especially for the vertical stress along the inclined central line and along the hanging wall. It is further shown that neglecting deformability in limit equilibrium analyses is an acceptable assumption. However, Poisson?s ratio and the dilatancy angle, usually neglected in limit equilibrium analyses, may have significant effect on the stress distribution. Results also confirm that the backfill strength parameters (cohesion and friction angle) are critical factors required to properly evaluate the stress distribution, at least within a certain range of parameter values.

The Chairman opened the session by wondering why so few papers on Maritime Structures had been received for this conference. Perhaps because the marine environment is so hostile and the access so difficult that engineers tend to be more prudent about new ideas and designs. Dennis Waite noted the number of grey hairs in the room - grey hairs which could be equated with experience gained the hard way. He hoped that this experience would be passed on in the discussion period of this session. The Chairman was delighted to welcome two authors from China, Mr Sun and Mr Liang. He was most grateful on behalf of the conference for their efforts both in preparing their papers and for being able to present them. He regretted that Messrs Noce and Fedolino were not able to present their paper and then welcomed Mr Christensen from Denmark who would present the first paper.

A 9-month study of the uses of wire rope associated with U. S. underground coal mining is reported. Rope applications are broken down into hoisting and nonhoisting applications where "hoisting" refers to transport in vertical and inclined shafts. The former receives the greatest emphasis since it represents the most critical rope application from the stand-point of production and safety. The discussion of hoisting practice includes aspects related to the mine operators as well as those related to the equipment builders and wire rope manufacturers. U. S. state and Federal laws regulating hoisting and wire rope use are also presented and discussed. Canadian and other foreign hoisting practice and laws are included. The state of the art in electromagnetic nondestructive inspection of hoist ropes is presented. Capabilities and use of one Canadian electromagnetic device are discussed in great detail. Conclusions are drawn regarding the present state of wire rope and hoisting technology in U. S. coal mines. Recommendations are made for improving rope practice, in general, and hoisting, in particular, consistent with greater safety.

This chapter deals with the concepts ofshock waves aud detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mrc!~amcal work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

The Full Scale Model Roof Bolt Test System described herein was designed, fabricated, erected, and installed by MSA Advanced Systems Division for the U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Research Center. It was furnished under USBM Contract No. 50271014 and Modifications. The test system is intended for use by the Bureau of Mines to run comparison tests on roof bolt systems. The mine entry cross section is made from special concrete pillars and roof slabs. They are constructed within a steel beam frame with hydraulic operated cylinders to apply loads that simulate the action of mining overburden. The frame is designed so it can be disassembled for replacing the concrete in subsequent tests. A computer and data acquisition system is furnished to control the load application and measure and gather data.

"A new process is disclosed for the recovery of gold and/or silver values from activated carbon wherein they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes. A unique chemistry allows the new process to use mill process water containing an inexpensive, non-hazardous compound as the eluant. The new process has an elution period of 5 hours at 98°C. The gold in the eluant can be recovered by electrowinning or zinc precipitation. The new elution process is simple, reliable, and provides an eluted carbon that may not require thermal regeneration before reuse. Retrofitting the new process to existing processes such as Zadra, Anglo, and others will not require significant capital expenditures.IntroductionThe efficient and reliable elution process for gold/silver from activated carbon is a very important process in the gold mining industry. AFTER a series of experiments covering a period of about three years, ending from the spring of 19iJ.2 to the spring of 1915, a 2,000-ton leaching plant for the treatment of the accumulated copper concentrator tailing was built and put into operation. During the experimental period, the first step was that of laboratory experiments or beaker leaches. Green rust (GR) are layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides, having a pyroaurite-type structure consisting of positively charged hydroxide layers and hydrated ions in interlayers. This special feature of GR is very efficient for wastewater treatment as the pollutants are easily taken in or exchanged with the anions in the interlayers. It can be simply and cost-effectively produced by electrocoagulation (EC). Chicken processing plant (CPP) produces large amount of wastewater containing variety of readily biodegradable organic compounds, fats, and proteins. The possible re-use of properly treated CPP wastewater would be economic and environment friendly. In this study, we present our work on treatment of CPP wastewater using EC, specifically for the removal of COD. Analysis of the EC-treated water for reuse in the same plant is discussed considering the U.S.EPA regulations. Two types of EC-reactors were used for this purpose. To better understand the treatment mechanism, EC-floc was also characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) have numerous key applications in both traditional and advanced technologies. A shortage of some critical REEs is expected due to the discrepancy between the REE abundance in REE deposits and the REE demand from the market. For example, Neodymium, Europium, Terbium, Dysprosium, Erbium and Yttrium are expected to be in short supply. REE recovery and separation from secondary resources such as uranium wastes, heavy mineral sands, and recycled materials can balance the shortfall in a cost effective way.The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is engaged in the development and commercialization of complete REE recovery and separation technologies in Canada. One of SRC’s newest developments is the design and commissioning of a heavy rare earth (HREE) separation pilot plant. The pilot plant uses hundreds of stages of solvent extraction (SX) to produce high purity individual HREEs from both primary and secondary resources.This paper presents the design of an HREE recovery process for the particular case of uranium processing wastes. The separation results of a group separation are reported and discussed, as well as the issues and the challenges of the development, commissioning and operation of the continuous SX pilot plant.IntroductionSignificant amounts of strategic specialty heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) are found in uranium wastes in Saskatchewan. It estimated that about 47 tonne/a of heavy rare earth element oxides (HREO) including 27 tonne/a of Y2O3, plus 6 tonne/a of Sc2O3 are in the raffinate of every uranium mill for potential recovery. Since the HREEs are already in the raffinate, cost effective HREE production is promising in Saskatchewan.Selective precipitation including nutraulization, oxalate and double-salts precipitation, as well as sulfide precipitation, ion exchange (IX) and SX are commonly used technologies for the recovery and purification of REE solution. REE oxalate precipitation is an effective technology to remove Fe, Al, Ca, Si and other impurities by taking the advantages of the solubility difference between oxalates of REEs and impurities in acidic solution (Xu, 2005)."

"Anaconda Mining Inc. is investigating potential improvements and expansions to their operating plant located on the Baie Verte Peninsula in Newfoundland. An extensive batch and continuous bench scale testing program was launched to investigate the efficiency of cyanide destruction under different conditions in order to improve tailings handling. The primary objective of the cyanide destruction study was to apply new technologies to develop a novel cyanide destruction system.Effluent and slurry from Anaconda Mining Inc.’s Point Rousse Project was received at RPC where test work was conducted. Various sodium metabisulfite (MBS) dosages were evaluated and the use of utilizing ozone and ultra violet (UV) light to oxidize cyanide was investigated. All the data was evaluated and mass balances were compiled to develop several flowsheets. Overall encouraging results were found using a combination of ozone and MBS.IntroductionAnaconda Mining Inc.’s Point Rousse project includes an operating gold processing plant located on the Baie Verte Peninsula in Newfoundland which is in the process of improving and expanding. This plant comprises of milling and flotation followed by cyanide leaching in order to extract the gold. The residue from cyanide leaching is filtered by drum filters prior to being clarified for the Merrill-Crowe process. Once the gold has been recovered by the Merrill-Crowe process the effluent is filtered by filter presses and the resulting filtrate as well as the solids from the drum filters are detoxified prior to being pumped to the tailings pond along with the flotation tailings.The entire process is very dependent upon the efficient destruction of cyanide in the effluents and successful tailings handling. Substantial amounts of effluent are delivered to tailings ponds after gold extraction which could create environmental problems if the regulations are not met. Environmental regulations stipulate that final effluents contain no more than 1 mg/L Total CN.The detoxified tailings of the Point Rousse project are produced by the INCO SO2-Air circuit depicted in Figure 1. These detox tailings contain 10 mg/L Total CN at that point of the circuit and this was selected as the target to be matched while reducing overall MBS consumption rates from 3.2 g/L per minute. Prior to detoxification, the filter press tailings contain 520 mg/L Total CN while the drum tailings contain 29 mg/L Total CN."

The ore treated at the reduction plant (called Yangdei) of the Chiksan -Mining Co., Korea, is brought from four of the company mines, and from the small tribute mines. The largest shipments conic from Sajunkohl mule, situated about a mile and a half from the mill (Fig. 1). The ore is quartz of medium hardness. The overage assay value in gold is $6.95 per ton. At the mine the ore is put into bin,, and is Mien trammed over an 8 per cent. grade to the tipple bins above the mill, where the ore is drawn through the hull holes as desired. The capacity of the tipple bins is about 3,500 tons. On, from Moonsukohl, Chung Tarrie, Yang Chun, and the tribute mines is brought in by bulls and bull wagons. Despite the extensive use of fluorphlogopite, investigators do not agree as to its exact melting temperature. Data on other fluormicas and on related fluorsilicate systems are largely nonexistent. A knowledge of the melting temperature is necessary for the effective synthesis and use of fluorphlogo¬pite or other fluormicas. The increasing use of two- and three-mica systems to yield polycrystalline ceramics has made more urgent the need for melting temperature information concerning these other fluormicas. This report is part of a program by the Bureau of Mines to synthesize large-size or large-crystal fluorphlogopite and develop a usable reconstituted fluormica sheet. The melting temperature of fluorphlogopite, K2Mg6A12Si6020F4, was found to be 1,383° ±2° C. This temperature was found by studying single crystals of fluorphlogopite, heating behavior of glass of fluorphlogopite composition, and the actual crystallization of fluorphlogopite from a melt that had been heated above 1,430° C. The formation of forsterite or norbergite was directly proportional to the loss of volatiles during the experimentation. Many trials revealed that the only reliable seal was a thick platinum sheet with welded seams. If no volatiles were lost, neither norbergite nor forsterite were formed; fluormica was then the only product. Excellently formed crystals of forsterite with an optical sign different from ordinary forsterite were obtained during the single crystal melting experiments. These crystals resulted from a slow loss of volatiles. A congruent melting of fluorphlogopite is indicated by the data of this report; however, incongruency within a small temperature range is not precluded. A more refined method using phase equilibria-quench methods would be necessary to settle the question absolutely.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

The purpose of the initial research performed under this contract was to determine the margins of safety in explosion-proof (XP) enclosures, which were designed and certified according to the current schedule (Schedule 2G). Results from this work provide baseline data on the current schedule, from which a new schedule can be formulated to give equal or greater levels of safety. Results and discoveries in the initial work led to an expansion of the contract to cover, additionally, weld quality in enclosure fabrication, reliability of enclosures with windows and lenses, and performance tests for enclosure qualification. Finite element calculations and hydrostatic tests revealed wide variations in the margins of safety in the enclosures studied; however, only one enclosure had a safety factor which was less than one. Results from a weld quality survey led to the recommendation of AWS Welding Standard D14.4 for the fabrication of XP enclosures. Based on other work, accelerated aging tests were recommended for qualifying plastics and adhesives that are used in some enclosures, and a Structural Performance Test was developed to test enclosure strength for a minimum static pressure of 150 psig.

Toxic fumes generated during shot firing were measured in a phosphate rock mine and a copper mine. Fumes generated during firing of explosives in the Bureau of Mines 1350 ft3 test chamber were measured also. The release of fumes from water gels, ammonium-nitrate oil mixtures and nitroglycerin based explosives was studied. Direct reading instruments were used to monitor the fume concentrations. The amount of CO produced per unit weight of nitroglycerin explosives (0.41 ft3/200 grams) was higher than that produced by ammoniumnitrate-oil mixtures (0.24 ft3/200 grams) and water gels (0.16 ft3/200 grams). The amount of NOx produced by nitroglycerin based explosives was also higher than the amount produced by water gels or ammonium nitrate-oil mixtures.

Mine sites and construction projects have faced problems with blasting a smooth back wall. This lead to safety concerns with slope stability and rock falls from the walls. Decades ago Dr. Calvin Konya began a special type of blasting called “Precision Presplitting”. This form of presplitting used relatively light loads based on the rock type being blasted. The explosive loads were estimated for each rock type and adjusted as blasting progressed. This current research project also determined a new equation for prediction of the ground vibration from one type of presplitting and compared it to vibration from production blasting.

Durante los últimos 10 años en Antamina se ha estado gestionando el mantenimiento de una manera tradicional, la mayoría de los reportes se realizaban manualmente, las presentaciones se hacían en ppt, los seguimientos y controles se llevaban en Excel. En su momento esta forma de trabajo logró muy buenos resultados. Sin embargo, ante el crecimiento de las flotas, el incremento de la cantidad de información que se recibían de los diferentes sistemas de los equipos, esta forma de trabajo fue quedando obsoleta, por lo cual las plataformas de la gestión de mantenimiento requerían ser robustecidos, de manera que se aproveche las nuevas tecnologías, la gestión de datos automatizadas, el modelamiento de fallas, en otras palabras, la modernización en general de la gestión.
