The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... El presente trabajo señala el uso de microorganismos en el proceso de lixiviación de los minerales a través del aislamiento, catalogación e identificación de esta bacterias oxidantes de azufre, a fin de utilizarlas en reacciones energéticas junto con el sustrato mineral para así comprobar la lixiviabilidad bacteriana por medio de una adecuada extracción de cobre. Para ello, se utilizó material procedente de Cerro Verde, donde se buscó lograr una lixiviación ácida por medio del ácido sulfúrico producido por las bacterias Thiobacillus, obteniendo satisfactoriamente minerales de tipo chalcopirita y calcosita iones solubles, entre otros importantes minerales.

Processos de fundição de ligas de alumínio com altos teores de Mg são um desafio da indústria, uma vez que diferentes taxas de resfriamento ocorrem em geometrias diversas. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a liga de alumínio AA5052 com variações em teores de Mg por meio de experimentos de solidificação direcional transitória, e compreender seus efeitos com relação a evolução de parâmetros térmicos, microestruturais, e propriedade mecânica. As leis experimentais de evolução do espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) com relação a taxa de resfriamento resultam em: ?_1=640 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_1=300 ?T ?_L?^(-1/4) para a liga com 3,2%Mg. As leis de crescimento de espaçamento dendrítico secundário (?2) com relação a velocidade de solidificação resultaram em: ?_2=27 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para a liga 5052 com 2,4%Mg e ?_2=15 ?V_L?^(-1,1) para as ligas com 2,6%Mg e 3,2%Mg. Maiores teores de Mg na liga AA5052 proporcionaram uma expressiva redução no valor de ?2 para uma determinada VL. A evolução da dureza mostrou-se diretamente relacionada ao tamanho e a distribuição dos intermetálicos presentes, sendo ?2 o fator predominante neste controle.

Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. Within certain limits, the fertility of a worn-out soil may be restored, deforested areas can be replanted, one year's wasted water-supply is followed by another; but coal and ores, once taken out, cannot be mined again, and should therefore be conserved with especial care. This means, however, not that mining should be restricted, but that it should be done most economically and with the minimum of waste.

"El siguiente texto señala las etapas que comprende el proceso electrolítico del zinc empleado en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, así como la importancia de la aplicación de este método de obtención en el 40% de la producción mundial. El tratamiento electrolítico del zinc se realiza en seis etapas: tostación, lixiviación, filtración, purificación, electrolisis, fundición y moldeo. La tostación convierte el sulfuro de zinc en óxido y depende de esta primera fase la mayor recuperación del zinc. En este proceso, el concentrado se divide en dos roasters tipo Wedge con capacidad para 60 toneladas cada una. Posteriormente este aire del concentrado, es tomado de la atmósfera y conducido a la columna central del roaater a través de una tubería con válvula y un manómetro de agua, que sirve para reguiar la presión del aire a 5.8 pulgadas. Dicha presión está calculada en función del volumen de aire necesario para la oxidación. Posteriormente la lixiviación disuelve la calcina en el electrolito gastado que sale de las celdas (155 - 73-gramos de ácido sulfúrico por litro y 55 gramos de zinc) para así eliminar impurezas tales como el fierro, arsénico y antimonio con bióxido de manganeso. La tercera etapa denominada filtración separa la materia insoluble de la solución del sulfato de zinc, a través de 6 filtros rotatorios de armadura metálica de tipo Burt de 5 pies de diámetro y 40 de largo. La purificación disminuye las impurezas como el Cu y Cd, hasta un máximo de 0.5 mg/lt, reduciendo el zinc a un polvo finísimo. Para el desarrollo de la electrólisis se utlizan tanques como celdas electrolíticas, un equipo de fuerza de dos transformadores y electrodos (anodos y cátodos), elecrolitos y reactivos. La sección de fundición y moldeo, forma los cátodos de zinc para su moldeo en barras de forma comercial, con un peso de 25 kilos cada una. En consecuencia, la factibilidad de este método radica en su simplificidad y economía, debido a la calidad de sus concentrados, como en el número(2) de purificaciones realizadas. "

Leaching operations combine both metallurgical and hydraulic processes to extract metals from the ore heap. In the design of leaching operations, metallurgical tests and simple hydraulic tests are often conducted to define operational parameters such as leach cycle time, application rate, lift height, and effective leach area. While metallurgical constraints are often the primary focus on leach facility design, the hydraulic factors are also critical to the overall success of the operation. Some of the hydraulic factors that are known to impact solution flow through heaps include: • Ore physical and hydraulic properties, • Variation in ore properties under heap loading, • Ore mineralogy and its susceptibility to chemical and/or mechanical degradation, and • Heterogeneities within the heap. This paper presents a discussion on hydraulic factors that may impact the effectiveness of leaching operations. In addition, methods are presented which may be used to assess flow conditions within active and inactive heaps.

Silicon metal as a commodity material is produced by carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric submerged arc furnaces, where CO2 forms as a by-product. Since 1997 the Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Association have been engaged in research programmes aiming for reduced CO2-emissions associated with fossil carbon in their processes. One important issue has been to study how charcoal and wood chips perform compared to coal and coke in the silicon process. The ability of the carbon-rich reduction materials to react with SiO-gas is commonly assumed to be of large importance to the performance of the process. Based on laboratory experiments with different carbon materials, combined with estimation of parameters in a mathematical model of the reaction between carbon and SiO-gas, a foundation for a theoretical study of the performance of the carbon materials in a silicon furnace is established.

"SUMMARYThe quality of Moose Creek coal is considered superior to that of any now being produced in the Matanuska field of Alaska. In rank it is classed as roar coking high-volatile B bituminous coal.At present the Moose -Creek mines are accessible from the Glenn highway by 6 miles of well-maintained gravel road. The nearest railroad loading point is Moose Creek siding; 7 miles by road from the Buffalo mine. Palmer, 12 miles south of Buffalo mine, is the nearest town. Anchorage is 50 miles south of Palmer by road and-railroad.Core drilling and trenching by the Bureau of Mines revealed 2,375,500 short tons of coal in the Buffalo series on the Buffalo Coal Co. leasehold. Of this, 514,200 tons is considered measured coal and 489,900 tons indicated coal. Existence of deeper beds over the same length increased the tonnage of coal of all categories to 3,279,300 tons. The property has an assumed life, of 16 to 22 years, depending on the number of beds mined, based on an output of 500 tons of coal a day and 100-percent recovery. Coal from some of the beds car be marketed without washing however, a washery is necessary if all beds are mined. Beds in the Buffalo series not mined in the ""first mining"" will be irrecoverable at any later date.The Bureau of Mines completed exploration of approximately one-third of the local coal-bearing areas during 1943. Knowledge gained from this work makes it possible to investigate the rest of the area by drilling an estimated additional 5,000 foot of hole."

Dado que la simulación digital es una herramienta auxilar para los ingenieros de procesos -en tanto evalúa la factibilidad de un flowsheet propuesto y predice el efecto de una modificación para un flowsheet existente, su importancia también se extiende también a la evaluación de alternativas para las estrategias de control en los circuitos de la planta. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios económicos y técnicos obtenidos en la planta San Rafael mediante el empleo de simuladores en los circuitos de molienda, chancado y concentración gravimétrica, los cuales permiten corroborar los cambios efectuados u optimizar los circuitos señalados de forma simple y rápida.

Para mantener el drenaje de las instalaciones de las bombas en Cerro de Pasco se necesita un aproximado de 3700 galones por minuto. Empero del total de los 3700 galones por minuto, 2500 es agua ácida y el restante; 1200, es agua dulce. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del siguiente trabajo es revisar los problemas de mantenimiento de las bombas -en tanto represente la consecuencia del agua ácida de las minas-,para reducir los costos y las causas de deterioro, asimismo reparar en las corrientes extraviadas como causas corrosivas serias, que necesitan ser adecuadamente protegidas desde el momento de su instalación y supervisadas periódicamente, Por último, aislar adecuadamente las bombas de las corrientes extraviadas, reduciendo la posiblidad de la acción galvánica de los equipos eléctricos instalados a proximidad.

Esto alcanza resultados que van mucho más allá de la gestión de conflictos, enfocados a crear un territorio sostenible bajo un modelo de gobernanza sólido. Se presenta el caso del proceso de diálogo multiactor en Los Encuentros, Ecuador, bajo el marco del proyecto Fruta del Norte de Lundin Gold.
