This case study examines the multi-sectoral partnership arrangement that was developed to improve health services near the proposed Las Cristinas gold mine. The investment climate in Venezuela is uncertain and the socio-economic circumstances are potentially hostile. Despite that, the partnership between the mining company, local communities, government agencies and an international health nongovernmental organization (NGO) collectively leveraged nearly $2.5 million to build and operate a community health center.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. Remining of abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania requires the implementation of pollution abatement and mining techniques called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Water-quality data from over 100 remining sites with more than 230 abandoned discharges were analyzed with respect to the types of BMPs employed to abate the pollution loadings of acidity, iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfate. Discharges exhibiting a significant decrease in acidity were most highly associated with sites where large volumes of alkaline materials were encountered (66.7%) or added (63.7%). The best results for iron loading were achieved with large-quantity alkaline addition (54.6%) and water handling systems (47.8%). Water handling systems (47.4%), daylighting (40.7%), and revegetation (40.2%) were associated with significantly lower manganese loadings. The decreases in acidity and sulfate loads associated with increasing the amount of alkaline material in the backfill indicates that the production of acid mine drainage can be retarded by adding large quantities of alkaline materials.

The techniques are discussed briefly in the following sections. However, detailed information on the techniques is provided in the cited references. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane, if not properly controlled in the underground mine environment, is a safety concern due to the potential risk for an explosion. This is a particular problem during longwall mining, where the high rate and volume of coal extraction can result in the release of large amounts of methane from the mined coalbed and other adjacent gas-bearing strata. The variability and potential hazards of these sometimes unexpectedly high gas flows provide the impetus to develop methods to predict methane emissions into the underground workplace. A forecast of the volume of gas that might be released during coal mining is helpful for designing ventilation systems and for implementing optimum methane drainage strategies to help mitigate expected gas emission problems. A complete assessment of the need for methane drainage prior to mine development generally requires both an empirical and a theoretical approach. If there are active mines in the general area with similar geologic conditions and coal characteristics, a review of gas problems in those mines provides an initial insight into the level of gas emissions to be expected at a new location. In addition, relatively simple methods exist to determine the in situ gas content (volume of gas per unit weight of coal) of the coalbeds in a particular mining area, as well as the gas-in-place (volume of gas in the coalbed(s) within a defined geographic area).

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

The chief experiences for constructing deep tubular columns foundation under deep water are as follows: 1. P.C. tubular columns were sunk inside the caisson. 2. P.O. tubular columns of 3.6 M. diameter were sunk thru thick soil layer to a depth of 47 M. by vibrators. 3. The double wall steel cofferdam was sunk thru soil layer to a depth 31.3 M.. 4. Bore the bedrock with rotary drill succesfully. According to the successful experiences mentioned above, the deep tubular columns foundation may be constructed beyond 100 meters.

Low-temperature carbonization product yields for 129 coals representative of 12 Utah coalfields were estimated, using regression equations developed from heating value and proximate and ultimate analysis data. It was shown that yields of char, tar plus light oil, water of decomposition, and gas, as well as the gas volume and the heating value of the gas, could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Published and experimental results from eight Utah coals carbonized at selected temperatures in the 4500 to 1,000° C range were used to determine the effect of temperature on product yields. Carbonization temperature, heating value) oxygen, and volatile matter of coal appear to be the principal variables influencing carbonization product yields. Data presented show that the heating value and the residual volatile matter in low-temperature char may be predicted using relationships developed from proximate analysis data for 220 coals.

The recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) tends to be a rather complex undertaking when considering the intimate bonding of materials in the average printed circuit board. The development of a recycling process is further complicated when considering the wide variety of products being generated under the heading of “electronics” as well as the constant change in materials of construction coupled with the speed at which electronics are changing. CSM researchers have undertaken a survey of the current state of pyrometallurgical processing of e-waste. This base-line will set the stage for the development of new recycling technology at CSM.

"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured.The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. In concrete lined tunnels, formwork removal timing may be controversial. Contractors seek to strip the form as soon as possible, and designers seek to keep the formwork in place as long as practical to protect the fresh concrete. Formwork removal timing is normally specified as a function to its insitu concrete strength. This approach may work for smaller diameter tunnels, but fallacy occurs when applying this approach to larger diameter tunnels, since a larger diameter would experience more displacement than a smaller diameter tunnel from its own weight. Excessive deformation may fail a tunnel to meet its roundness criterion and overstress the lining causing cracking or falling from the crown. This paper presents a contractual mechanism to mitigate this issue.

This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

Spatial and temporal temperature variations in a high-level radioactive waste repository drift can give rise to moisture transport within the drift. Knowledge of this moisture transport may be important to assessing the potential for corrosion of all metallic components in the drift. The model presented here shows one approach to simulating evaporation, transport, and condensation of water in large underground openings using a framework based on computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results that explicitly model water and latent heat transport are presented.

"Many of the hoisting slopes at the mines in the State of Washington are driven on extra steep dips. To facilitate hoisting they are driven wide enough to provide two tracks. The cars are handled by high-speed, first-motion electric hoists and the trips run in balance.The State mining laws a provide that special man-cars be provided on slopes of 20° or more and that no one be allowed to ride while any loaded car is being hoisted in any slope in a mine. Obviously, in addition to the fact that it is more or less hazardous to ride while an empty trip is being hoisted, considerable hoisting time is lost during the day if some one has to ride the trips in the slope.Owing to the locations of pumps and various types of equipment, more or less travel is required up and down the slope. Not only to provide a proper safety factor but also to comply with the law, some other means of transportation in an¬other passageway is desirable. This is sometimes recognized in large mines by pro viding separate hoisting shafts, or slopes, and necessary equipment, which are use for transporting men and material. The handling of material in itself would justify the system in most large mines.The following description of an automatic electric man-hoist was prepared from data furnished through the courtesy of Mr. Thomas Murphy, superintendent of the Northwestern Improvement Company's mines in the Roslyn-Cle Elum coal field.The special features of this hoist are that no hoistman is required and its operation is always under the control of the person or persons riding the trip.The hoist was installed at mine No. 5, Roslyn, Washington, to provide a means of entering and leaving the mine on idle days or at night when no hoistman was on duty and to make it unnecessary to use the main hoist for a man trip during working hours. It has been in operation for about two years and has given very satisfactory service.The hoist, with all accessories, is housed in a concrete building 200 feet back from and in direct line with one of the main airways. One car with a capacity of six men operates over a distance of 1,200 feet on a 38° pitch.The wiring details of the electric circuits which control the operation of the hoist are shown in Figure 1-a.The hoist is driven through a worm gear by a 500-volt shunt-wound direct-current motor at a car speed of 120 feet per' minute. A gravity friction brake with magnetic release is mounted on the- motor shaft and is wired in multiple with the motor field coils. The hoist drum is also equipped with emergency friction brakes, which operate by gravity and are released, in case of overspeed, by the governor geared direct to the drum shaft. When these brakes set the control circuit is opened at contact 2E-2C and the motor stops.If the descending car meets some obstruction and is stopped, the hoist continues to run and unwind the rope. To guard against this occurrence, a weighted sheave wheel rides the rope 4 feet from the drum, and if the rope becomes slack the rider drops downward and opens the contact 2C-2E which stops the hoist.Limit switches, S1 and S2, are located on the hoist indicator, which is connected to the drum shaft through sprockets and chain. The pointer P indicates the position of the hoist at all times."

Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13 percent of Canada?s total oil requirements. To do this, Syncrude mines the oil sand in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB) is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States. As parts of the Mildred Lake Base Mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12, and 34, 35 kilometres northeast of the Mildred Lake facility. (Figure 1) In 2000 the first hydrotransport low energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320 ton to 380 ton payload capacities.

The State of Washington has a federal program that gives the Office of Surface Mining responsibility for assuring the reclamation of lands affected by coal mining. Most of Washington's coal-bearing regions lie west of the Cascade Mountains. The state's coal reserves are estimated at 1.4 billion tons, about 0.3 percent of the nation's total coal reserve. Steeply dipping. minable seams range from 2.5 to 25 feet in thickness. The occurrence of coal in Washington has been documented since the early days of its settlement; at one time, coal production played a significant role in the state's economy. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, coal was second only to lumber in Washington's industrial production. Coal production declined as other sources of energy were developed. By 1959, production was at 200,000 tons. Regulation of the coal mine operations in Washington is conducted by the Office of Surface Mining's Casper, Wyoming, Field Office and its local office in Olympia, Washington. All permit applications and abandoned mine land reclamation are completed by the OSM Western Support Center in Denver, Colorado. Inspections of mine and reclamation sites are conducted by OSM reclamation specialists located in Olympia.

Looking for an idyllic paradise that has investment and business potential as spectacular as the stunning views of mountains, the rich Ganesh Himal zinc-lead deposit exposed between 4,050 m and 5,000 m is the answer. Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

A new type of the cast in situ piles is introduced. The installation of the new pile is based on a pushing in/gaining back procedure. A temporarily closed tip element with square shaped cross-section being attached to an upper circular shaft tube is vibrated into the soil. The steel armature is embedded. Concrete is poured into the tube and, the whole structure is gained back while the tip is in opened position. The width of the tip is less than or equal to 40 cm. The maximum length of the pile is about of 14 m. Great bearing capacity is resulted from the double soil compaction effect. No spoil is generated and, the pile construction can be controlled. The paper presents the results of four loading test at three sites with some soil data.
