Explosives have been fired electrically for several decades. Mountains have been tunneled, deep shafts sunk, extensive coal and metal mine workings excavated and, in times of war, railroads, buildings, bridges, and fortifications have been destroyed by means of electrically fired explosives. Modern engineering depends so much on explosives that their safe and efficient handling and especially their detonation are of prime importance to all those connected with the use of explosive agents. Electric shot-firing is only one method of igniting explosives, but it is rapidly spreading and because of certain inherent safety features should be encouraged. Data collected by the Bureau of Mines indicate that in the United States a large percentage of the blasting in quarries, shafts, and tunnels, and from 15 to 25 per cent of the blasts in mining operations, are set off electrically. The Bureau of Mines is interested in electric shot-firing because of its use in mining, and especially because electric methods, when properly applied, are undoubtedly safer than other methods commonly used.

Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

Kennecott Energy's Colowyo Coal Mine is the largest open pit coal mine in Colorado and produces 5.5 MM tons per year. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven seams of rolling coal ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Draglines are used to strip overburden ranging from 60 to 120 feet thick off two coal seams. These two seams are characterized by soft and fold fractured coal and in past practice cast blasting caused excessive coal damage. As a result, to ensure minimal coal damage and high coal recoveries, the overburden was excavated in two passes. The first pass removed the upper overburden to within 10 to 20 feet of the coal seam. The second pass removed the remaining overburden above the coal. Two-pass mining was effective in controlling coal damage, but also carried significant additional costs.

"Molybdenite flotation at the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex has been studied as a function of pulp potential controlled using two types of sodium sulfide (mineral and chemical origin). Air and either plant or laboratory nitrogen was used as a flotation carrier. Potential measurements were taken in the rougher cells as it was proved to be vital for molybdenite flotation. Flotation test with reducing potentials between -525 and -575 mv gave the highest molybdenum recovery (93%) and the lowest copper recovery of between 4 to 15% can be achieved. These potentials did not change considerably by adding increasing amounts of sodium sulfide. At more oxidizing potentials, i.e. more than -450 mv, the recovery of copper increases while the recovery of Molybdenite drops.INTRODUCTIONThe average copper ore feed grade to the Sarcheshmeh flotation circuit is typically set at about 1.2% Cu. to be delivered to processing unit is set at 1.2%. There is no control of molybdenum (Mo) which usually varies between 0.01 and 0.04%. During concentration, a Cu-Mo concentrate is produced by one stage of roughing, one stage of scavenging and two stages of cleaning. Final concentrate contains 0.5% of Mo and 32% of Cu while the particle size is 90% under 42 microns (325 mesh). Because of the high grade of Mo in this concentrate and economic interests, a molybdenite flotation circuit plant was built in 1984. This plant was designed to treat 1432 tons of Cu-Mo concentrate (on dry basis) and consists of one stage of roughing followed by seven stages of cleaning. After dewatering the concentrate contains 53.7% Mo which is dried and shipped overseas.The majority of molybdenite production worldwide comes as byproduct of copper porphyry ores. The Mo grade typically varies between 0.01 and 0.06% and accompanies chalcopyrite and chalcocite. Due to the hydrophobic nature of molybdenite, it can be floated along with copper sulfides. Thus the overall concentrate of Cu and Mo contains 0.2-1% of molybdenum as well as 20-42% of copper. To separate the Mo, Cu and Fe minerals, depressants are used. The most important of which are sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide, Anomal D, sodium cyanide, ferropottasium and ferro-cyanide. The first three regeants have been extensively used for successfully treating porphyry ores [1]. In the molybdenum plant of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex only sodium sulfide has been used to date."

THE ABRASIVES INDUSTRY throughout the world enjoyed a profitable year. With the exception of tripoli, the quantity of each kind of abrasive produced in the United States was greater than for any of the past 5 years and value of each was greater than for many years. Production of silicon carbide both in the United States and in Canada was the largest since 1960. Abrasive machining, which offers great potential for the increased Use of aluminum oxide, contributed to increased industrial productivity. Diamonds from the sea off the coast of South-West Africa attracted wide interest. Much of the production from this source has been gem diamond, and there is little likelihood of significant quantities of industrial diamond from that source. Manufactured diamond from all free-world sources was sold in the United States in 1964.

The world’s first copper electrorefinery started production in 1869 at Burry Port in South Wales. Built within the Pembrey Copper Works which had commenced smelting operations in 1849, the new refinery was based on principles described in the British patents issued to J.B. Elkington in 1865 and 1869. Refining principles and practices pioneered there were key to the foundation of modern electro-refining practice in what is now a dominant international industry producing over 16 Mt of electrical grade copper annually. This paper explores the background to this pioneering application of the new, early 19th century, science of “electro-metallurgy” and examines its links to the contemporary decorative electro-plating industry and to the shortcomings of 19th century fire refining. The beginnings and early years of the Pembrey electrorefinery are briefly discussed in relation to the quality, applications and pyrometallurgy of copper at the time. More than a decade would elapse before the birth of the electrical age: the Pembrey refinery may be seen as one of its vital precursors. It all, the year of the first electrolytic copper refinery established for 15 countries is included. These 15 countries now produce more that 70% of world refined copper (for 2018). INTRODUCTION In the 1840s, the new science of ‘electro-metallurgy’, a term coined by Smee in 1841 (Smee, 1841), was being adapted to the decorative electro-deposition of silver in a thin, bright adherent coating that was evidently equal in appearance to traditional silverware (Williams, 1976). Chief among innovative manufacturers of decorative objects who took up the new art of silver electro-plating was the acclaimed firm of G.R. Elkington and Co. of Birmingham, England. The company, which vigorously developed all aspects of electro-metallurgy for the decorative trade, entered the field of ‘electrotyping’, a technique in which the surface features of a mould are copied on an electro-deposited copper layer which, when stripped off, can be used to reproduce an imprint of the mould. In essence, it is a form of casting by electrodeposition, invented in 1837 independently by Jacobi in Russia (Pavlova, 1968) and Spencer in England (Wyatt, 1851).

Each potential oil sands developer deals with the question of optional sources of raw water to supply large water demands that range from 50 to 80 million cubic metres per year for each of six existing and planned developments. The Athabasca River currently supplies nearly all of the water to the existing mines via conventional bank intakes, which has resulted in some concern over the effects of reduced river flows. This paper describes the various water supply options, and the likely scenario for future oil sands water supply projects. Various water supply options have been suggested including Athabasca River water via infiltration galleries, groundwater, combined Athabasca River water and alluvial groundwater using wells (i.e. bank filtration systems), diversion of tributary rivers, utilization of large lakes in the region and pumping from other large rivers in the region. Investigations show that the size of river catchment needed to support raw water usage by a typical oil sands mines exceeds 5,000 km2 eliminating all tributary rivers that are located in the oil sands region except those rivers with large drainage areas like Firebag and MacKay Rivers. Lakes cannot be used as a source of supply due to large water deficits for smaller lakes and the large cost of sourcing water from a lake as large as Lake Athabasca. A groundwater source alone would not likely meet the large water demands. River intakes on the Athabasca River will likely continue to be the most practical water supply option for oil sands mines north of Fort McMurray, although various types of Athabasca River intakes are possible. Existing intake systems include screened riverbank intakes, forebay intakes, and river bottom intakes. Infiltration galleries are not feasible for most sites, though some bank-filtration-type systems using high capacity wells may be an option if there is sufficient thickness of high-permeability alluvium at a suitable location in the Athabasca River valley.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

In the past, various investigations have been carried out at the Hagerbach Experimental Gallery under accurately reproducible conditions, in order to determine the emissions emanating from blasting operations. Comparative investigations proved that the composition of the blast fumes is influenced by the choice of different explosives. It also emerged that the use of emulsion explosives leads to significantly lower concentrations of harmful substances in the blast fumes. Further investigations concerned the residues and reaction products from the explosive process which are left in the debris. Eluate tests on representative samples of debris were used to determine the concentrations of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium in the debris.

Product designed characteristics like reliability and maintainability affect maintenance cost, service performance, and therefore product support strategy must be defined during design stage in terms of these two dimensions. Furthermore product support and service delivery strategy has considerable influence on the total life cycle cost and the economic viability of industrial systems/products. he paper presents a concept for the development of service delivery strategy for industrial products with a special reference to mining systems. In this paper we emphasize that the strategy for product support should not be centred only on ‘product’ but it should also take into account the service delivery capability of the manufacturers/suppliers and users service organization, users competence and capability, product use location, logistics and infrastructures, etc., to arrive at the best performance and economic results. Such strategy should invariably include services supporting the client apart from considering services supporting the product. The discussion in the paper is based on the experiences from the manufacturing industry engaged in manufacturing of mining systems and the observed trends in technology and management of operation and maintenance of mining systems. Since 1999, the CWP level among miners with 25 years or more experience, for instance, has risen from slightly more than 4% to 9% (See Figure 1). While it is obviously necessary to protect all miners’ lungs, there is now a technology to improve the chances that new miners’ lungs will be protected from the day they begin work.

It is possible to purify some liquid metals by exploiting the difference between the vapour pressure of the bulk metal and the minor constituents or impurities. The rates of purification can be improved by carrying out the process under reduced pressure, that is, so called, vacuum. Some commercial examples of vacuum refining are the purification of molten tin to eliminate trace amounts of lead and the refining of cobalt, also to remove lead. The objective of this paper is to review the basic theory behind vacuum refining technology in order to show how the feasibility of vacuum refining can be determined simply for a particular system by evaluating Olette's Volatility Refining Criteriont.

Production of ferro-chromium in the submerged-arc furnace is highly energy-intensive. Several process rates have been attempted to reduce the specific energy consumption in the production of this alloy. An exhaustive understanding of the thermo-chemical features of the production process can be used to reduce the specific power consumption significantly. The knowledge can be used to reduce the energy drain through undesired reactions in the process can be minimised. Plant trials have shown that specific energy consumption up to 100kWh/tonne of hot metal can be obtained by adopting this strategy. The process requires modification in operation practice and does not require any capital investment unlike other processes adopted for reducing power consumption. The principle of thermo-chemistry involved in this process development and results of plant trials are discussed in detail.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

International Training Resources is a company consisting of personnel with extensive law enforcement and military special operations experience, The staff members are qualified to train and certify, assist and advise law enforcement officers and agencies, at any level, in critical incident policy, procedures and tactical resolutions. Successful critical incident resolution is comprised of many elements of professional skills and personnel. (Command staff, negotiators, snipers, tactical teams, uniform patrol, K-9, bomb squad, etc.) Recently, tactical teams have been developing the capability for the use of explosive methods for rapid entry into crisis locations. This document ‘will briefly describe the environment, operational issues and courses of action associated with developing a complete tactical breaching program for utilization by SWAT teams in response to operational conditions in critical incident situations. This topic is being presented to the I.S.E.E. evaluators under “Interesting Blasting Projects” and “Public Relations” categories. Tactical operations differ significantly from traditional industry practices and we appreciate the opportunity to show the industry other professional applications of explosive materials and techniques. Presently, of the few schools from which law enforcement officers can receive training with explosive breaching methods, International Training Resources is the only company currently teaching and certifying officers which has received total endorsement by the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) and the state blaster’s licensing commission. We have pioneered the combining of law enforcement needs and blasting industry technology to train tactical officers, nationwide, in the mission essential skills necessary for explosive breaching.

The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. Longwall shields provide essential ground control in longwall mining, yet a high percentage of shields are operating at less than peak capacity and many at well below the rated support capacity due to defective hydraulic cylinders or malfunctions in other hydraulic components. Leg pressure data are currently collected on state-of-the-art longwall shields, but typically are not analyzed to evaluate shield performance. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Shield Hydraulics Inspection and Evaluation of Leg Data (SHIELD) program is a Visual Basic software system that is designed to analyze leg pressure data and identify shields that are not performing to rated specifications. The program analysis is configured to detect the following conditions: (1) loss of leg pressure, (2) imbalance in leg pressure, (3) low set pressure, (4) low yield pressure, and (5) full extension of the bottom stage. Other performance assessment measures include the percentage of the support capacity utilized (ratio of peak load to yield load), the percent of time that a shield operates at yield load, the ratio of the set load to the yield load, and the amount of support capacity that is lost due to leaking cylinders. Historical record keeping will allow the user to select a particular shield and review the performance record as developed by the program for that shield. In addition to these performance assessment measures, the software will include an animated description of shield hydraulic systems that will describe the operation and significance of each hydraulic component and the impact of component failures on the shield’s capability to provide the required roof support. A general overview of the SHIELD program is provided in the paper together with an example analysis of a 2.5-year-old Australian longwall face.
