Research grant The Board of Directors of International Precious Metals Institute in conjunction with Gemini Industries, Inc., a California-based refiner of precious metals, recently announced a Gemini Research Grant of $3000 will be awarded annually to a graduate student who is pursuing studies in metallurgy, chemical processes as it pertains to precious metals, or materials sciences, and who is performing or planning research studies in the precious metals. Accidents and diseases The Third International Colloquium for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases in the Iron and Metal Industry is to be held on 15th and 16th June, 1982, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

These cover internal studies and analytical works on a wide variety of subjects, that for one reason or another, do not reach the publication stream of the regular series yet may be of interest to readers in this 'unpublished form'. Christian of Oxford University. The medal is an international award that was established in 1974 to recognize outstanding ability and leadership in materials research. Proterozoic volcanic suites An international symposium will be held at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham, U.K., from 2nd to 5th April, 1986. Entitled 'Geochemistry and Mineralisation of Proterozoic Volcanic Suites', this special meeting of the Geological Society will discuss the geochemical evidence for the nature of volcanism during the Proterozoic. These meetings, which take place traditionally every few years, are organized by the Austrian Metals Industry Association, the Austrian aluminium industry, and the University for Mining and Metallurgy in Leoben, in collaboration with the Aluminium-Zentrale Diisseldorf. President of AS&TS* Mr Arthur Woodington Reynolds (Sam) took office as President of The Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa on 28th November, 1984. Sam Reynolds was born in Boksburg on 27th December, 1930, and received his education at Christian Brothers College in Boksburg and at St John's College in Johannesburg. World mining Sweden, Finland, and Norway expect representatives of all mining countries in May-June 1987 to the 13th World Mining Congress in Stockholm. The Swedish Mining Association, the Finnish Association of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and The Association of Norwegian Mines will organize the Congress, together with the International Organizing Committee of the World Mining Congress. Sheet metal The German Group of the International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) will be organizing the 14th Biennial Congress of the IDDRG on 21st to 26th April, 1986, in Cologne and Munich. Safety in mines The 21st International Conference of Safety in Mines Research Institutes is to be held in Sydney from 20th to 25th October, 1985. Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. The output of palladium in the U.S.S.R. greatly exceeds the internal usage. The primary purpose of this 200 page volume is therefore to record details of fundamental researches on the properties of this metal with a view to expanding its marketability. Theoretical studies have revealed a number of alloys with great promise in electrical instruments and for the chemical industry. The success of these researches in the U.S.S.R. and in the U.S.A., resulted in the industrial usage of palladium exceeding that of platinum in 1957 and increasing its lead during the next decade. This volume is divided into three parts. Section I covers the mineralogy, extraction and the physical metallurgy of the metal. It records a considerable area where the resistance to corrosion of palladium equals that of platinum. Section II deals with the preparation and the properties of palladium in alloys and contains a comprehensive metallographic treatment of the many binary alloy systems. Section III is devoted to industrial applications. The 460 references which are quoted are mainly from the U.S.S.R. but otherwise have a world-wide coverage. H.B.

The Proceedings of the above Symposium have been edited and published by the Symposium Committee. The Symposium was sponsored by the Australian Coal Association, the Joint Coal Board, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The Symposium was very well attended, with presentations from fourteen countries, including all the major coal-producing countries of the world. The Proceedings are presented in two parts: the Symposium Part and the Workshop Part. The Symposium Part deals basically with the theoretical aspects of outbursts and high-gas emissions in mines, while the Workshop Part is more practically oriented and describes case studies, and the management systems, and drilling technologies used in underground mines.
