Mobile Roof Supports (MRS) look similar to a longwall shield on crawler tracks. The MRS units offer a safe, productive method of extracting the 40% to 60% product left normally unrecovered in room and pillar mining. The units feature radio control, self-contained power units, crawler track drive, and a 600 ton yield. Cribbing and setting posts in retreat mining has been a necessary burden to production. The MRS reduces this burden. Long blocks of coal can be developed to further reduce move and tram time, thus increasing production. The MRS units have successful safety records. The workers are removed from the immediate fall area, and we feel back injuries have been reduced by the workers not setting posts. While MRS units have been damaged in falls, the other capital equipment has been unharmed. The MRS product line has undergone normal product improvement and evolution. Product evolution is seen in our development of machines for particular mine requirements. Through the continuing development of the MRS, Fletcher presents the coal industry with a safe, productive method of retreat mining with potential to develop new mining methods.

An analysis of the Roof Falls Data Base (RFDB) for underground coal mines in Illinois for the period 2004?2008 indicated that about 80% of the roof falls occur at intersections and are associated with geologic anomalies or a rapidly changing geologic environment. Most falls are associated with anomalies such as clay dikes, differential compaction faults, shear zones, joints and fractures, and geologic structure. Therefore, a better analysis of the geology with emphasis on mapping anomalies such as joints and fractures and their application is necessary to improve ground conditions and safety. Such studies within Illinois Coal Basin are limited. This paper presents a mapping study of the joint orientations with documentation of dip of the several lithological units that lie directly above the Herrin No. 6 Coal seam around southern Illinois. These units include the Energy Shale, Anna Shale, and Brereton Limestone. The mapping was done in three mines and the data were plotted on a stereographic projection to determine the average characteristics of joint planes. The study mines included two deep underground mines and one shallow highwall mine. This study has helped identify favorable mining and support orientations in areas of highly variable geology. These are currently under review by the cooperating coal company for experimental roof control studies.

Retreat longwall method with re-use of gateroad has been traditionally employed in Japan, mainly because of the advantage of higher recovery. But the Miike Colliery has newly introduced the interpanel-pillar system to maximize the production efficiency. The Department of Mining, Kyushu University, in cooperation with the Miike Colliery and the Coal Mining Research Center (CMRC), has conducted research into the optimum design of interpanel-pillar, because this system may be adopted in other coal mines as well. Field measurements of the deformation of the gateroads and of stress distribution in the pillar show that the designed layout of the panel and pillar and the supporting system are proper from the viewpoints of gateroad maintenance and spontaneous combustion in the pillar.

In this paper the imminent relationship between rock burst and its phenomenon with normal rock pressure and its appearance, as well as the factors of one changing into another have been analyzed. Based on this, the necessary and sufficient appearing factors of rock bursts have been put forward, and the term "burst pressure" has been defined. According to the statistics data of tremendous rock bursts which appear in collieries in Hunan Province, the futures of high frequency, great strength and shallow depth of the beginning burst have been found. There ere some special structures in the coal seams, which are closely related with the burst phenomenon. A hypothesis of "star structure" has been suggested for the appearing mechanism of bursts. Inside and around this star structure the distribution rule of burst pressure and rock strength has been researched depending upon the theory of the limited stress field. A new description of the appearing causes of bursts has been raised.

To learn more about the fundamental roof behaviour in South African coal mines, accurate underground measurements of roof deflection were conducted in bord and pillar panels during development and pillar extraction. To conduct these measurements a survey levelling technique was adapted. The overall system reading accuracy was established as being within 0,4 mm on a 15 m sighting distance. The underground sites were modelled and, for a roadway development, similar symmetrical curvatures were calculated by a linear elastic model, as were measured underground. In a pillar extraction panel, a significant amount of bed separation was measured and the roof underwent an a-symmetric movement due to the close presence of the mined out area at one side of the roadway.

In gate roads where supports are subjected to dynamic loading four times due to retreating longwall panels, it is a real challenge to replace the rigid arches with flexible reinforcement systems and yet to provide safety and stability of these openings within better economical limits. The results presented in this paper are based on a three years of research project aimed at developing safe and economical support systems for gate roads in Çayìrhan coal mine. Çayìrhan -Mine Project includes laboratory and field studies, design analysis, pilot scale design applications and performance monitoring. Based on outputs of the design approach developed, four types of bolts, namely, Split Set, Yielding Super Swellex, Sis-Resin, and Fosroc-Resin bolts were installed in a gate road together with widely spaced yielding steel-arches. In order to compare the performance of these flexible support systems and to provide feed back for the design approach, a monitoring program was initiated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has modeled yield pillars to determine the effects of reinforcement techniques on pillar performance. Model pillars with width-to-height (w/h) ratios ranging from one to four were reinforced using advanced lateral support systems. To evaluate reinforcement and pillar performance, the model pillars were strained up to 18.6 pct in compression. The results show that the reinforcement had a significant effect on the postfailure characteristics of the pillar but had only a small effect on it's maximum failure strength. Pillar residual strengths increased up to 10 times, while the energy capacity increased by a factor of three depending on the reinforcement method. At maximum deformation, the residual strengths of several types of reinforced specimens exceeded the maximum compressive strength up to 2.5 times and resulted in an increasing positive postfailure stiffness. Test results, data analysis, and application of the results to underground mining are discussed.

Island Creek Corporation is predominately an underground mine operator deploying room-and-pillar and retreat longwall mining methods for extracting coal. Wide variations are encountered in overburden depth, stratigraphy, and insitu stress fields. This requires major adjustments in mine design among mines and occasionally within a mine. Simple rock mechanics principles are utilized in mine design to optimize safety and productivity. Physical observations and micro deformation monitoring of roadways are the primary techniques employed. Pillars and artificial support systems are the primary design elements modified. The specific case histories reviewed in this paper include narrow panels with high extraction for conventionally mined rooms, pillar sizing for longwall gate entries at great depths, and bolt type selection for difficult ground conditions.

This paper reports the finding of a comprehensive investigation carried out to evaluate the compaction characteristics of saturated sandstone aquifers in the Collie Coal Basin under conditions anticipated during dewatering operations. A triaxial technique has been adapted to evaluate the compaction characteristics of the sandstone aquifer in the Collie Basin. This technique, which allows the strata stress regime to be reproduced by triaxial loading with zero lateral strain, also provides a precise evaluation of lateral stresses and consequently Poisson's ratio under in situ conditions. The paper contains a description of the equipment commissioned, test techniques, results, analysis and interpretation of the data obtained. The testing evaluation techniques are general in nature and can be applied to field situations in locations where similar weak sandstones occur.

The formation of tension cracks in slopes is well known. Analytical studies require the determination of a critical slip surface for any slope and, in doing so, it is necessary to consider an appropriate tension crack. A general yet simple approach is proposed for identifying the critical slope failure surfaces associated with critical tension cracks. The minimum factor of safety consequently reflects both safety against shear sliding and tensile failure. In general, the critical slope failure surface for a slope determined in this way differs from that which is obtained without optimizing the position and depth of the tension crack. In particular situations, the difference is significant.

Pillar recovery in deep coal mines with competent roof and floor can concentrate stresses and generate hazardous bumps. Actual calculation of the geologic strain energy released in association with these coal bumps has been rare, although energy release values have been utilized successfully for indicating burst potential in numerous hard- rock mines. This paper advances the current knowledge of energy release calculations as applied to coal bumps through an extensive analysis of an actual bump occurrence. The U.S.B.M, displacement- discontinuity code, MULSIM/NL, is used to produce a numerical model which generates stress, displacements and energy values associated with a pillar retreat section. This model is calibrated with actual field data, and then dissipated energy values from the model are examined as to their suit- ability for indicating bump potential. Ultimately, it is determined that prudent application of dissipated energy calculations can be used as a tool to investigate the coal bump potential of a mining plan or cut sequence.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomographic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First¬arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

Stowing or waste fill is common in the German mining industry since the beginning of mining activities, With increasing mechanization, flat and gently inclined seams (0 -- 18) were mined. These mines were located within the densely populated areas close to important infrastructures such as industrial complexes, roads, highways, railroads, rivers and canals. These buildings and infra¬structures were rarely protected against subsidence influences and other ground movements and dump capacities close to the mines were exhausted. For subsidence reasons and because of the low dump capacities pneumatic stowing methods were continuously developed and used in German longwalls until 1997. Due to techni¬cal standards and because of some restrictions pneumatic stowing in Germany is only used at a minimum seam thickness of 2.00 m and average costs of this method are $20 - 30 per ton. A significant reduction of the disturbance potential and by that a decrease in expenses for subsidence regulations due to reduced subsidence and ground movements could not be achieved. In this paper the experiences with pneumatic stowing in the Ger¬man mining industry are described. Possible subsidence reduction and economic aspects of pneumatic stowing are taken into account.

Estimation of the initial vertical stress carried in a coal seam is an important first step in virtually all methods of evaluating the required size of pillars in coal mines. Such estimates are a trivial exercise in coal fields overlain by gently undulating topography. The LaModel program is easily and routinely applied in such cases to efficiently estimate mining-induced stresses throughout the coal seam. However, application of LaModel to coal mines operating under rugged topography and/or in tectonically disturbed regions is more difficult. LaModel estimates stresses in a twostep process. Topographic and multi-seam mining effects on insitu stresses are estimated in an initial step, and then mininginduced stresses are estimated in an independent second step. A LaModel program function has recently been introduced that decouples these two steps, allowing in-situ stresses to be directly entered from a file rather than calculated. One application of this function is to streamline sensitivity studies by avoiding repeated recalculation of in-situ stress. The function also allows importation of in-situ stress estimates developed by other means. There are no constraints on the imported stress field, which may include significant stress perturbations due to topography, faults, etc. Hence, the range of geologic environments that can be examined by LaModel is significantly increased. This study uses the new decoupling function in an exploration of in-situ stress estimation in mountainous terrain. One option is to use the topographic stress estimation feature included within the LaModel program, and the influence of important parameters in this routine is explored. Another option explored is importation of results from a detailed volume element model. Results of this study suggest that the method used to estimate in-situ stress, and the details of its execution, can have a significant impact for mines in mountainous terrain with strong overburden. More generally, decoupling is an efficient and flexible function that should be considered for most design studies.

The effects of horizontal stress in coal mine roofs in South Africa did not receive the attention it deserved for several years, but now there is a danger that it may be over emphasized. A number of phenomena that are ascribed to elevated levels of horizontal stress, are shown to he explained by fundamental considerations. The stress concentration caused by the creation of an opening in rock and the beam effects in a stratified roof are briefly reviewed It is shown that guttering can be present without high horizontal stress, depending on the nature of the roof material. Three examples from practice are presented where horizontal stress was initially erroneously believed to be responsible for roof collapses A comprehensive program of roof displacement monitoring in South Africa yielded results that are compatible with gravity loading on roof beams without the assistance of horizontal stress. It is also shown that one of the diagrams that are used to explain guttering as a result of horizontal stress is misleading The over emphasis on horizontal stress may obscure the real causes of roof instability, resulting in ineffective remedial action to be taken by mine operators.

Recent studies by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicate that shear loading contributes significantly to failure of bolts used for rock reinforcement in coal mine roofs. Laboratory tests on 17 bolts were conducted to study the behavior of roof bolts subjected to shear loading over a range of axial bolt loads. Fourteen strain gauges were attached to each bolt to measure axial and bending loads at seven locations along its length. The instrumented bolts were grouted through two high-strength concrete blocks, and axial tension was applied to as much as 75% of yield strength. With the block interface acting as a failure plane, shear loads were applied to the blocks at a constant rate of displacement to the ultimate strength of the bolts. The tests characterized the relationship of axial bolt loads to shear forces across a rock bedding plane and measured the distribution of axial and bending strain along the length of the bolts. These results will improve the selection of roof reinforcement in mine areas where high shear stresses are present, thus improving the safety of miners working in these areas.

The combination of free standing steel supports, such as arches, and rock bolts (mixed support) has Frequently been in used in UK coal mine roadways when it is considered that the strata and/or environmental conditions would not be suitable for rock bolts solely. However, how such mixed support systems operate is not fully understood. Due to the differences in the support method provided by rock bolts and free standing steel, the total support generated is not simply a case of adding the contribution to the support of the roadway given by the two systems. This paper describes a numerical investigation into mixed support systems when used in coal mine roadways. A series of 2D and 3D geomechanical models are described and the method of modelling the rock bolts and steel supports in coal mine tunnels is discussed. The numerical models described include rock boltd only roadways, steel supported roadways and mixed supported roadways in a variety of geological and in-situ stress conditions. Conclusions are formed that allow an insight into mechanisms of strata reinforcement provided by the support systems modelled. Further to this, a review of the numerical modelling of pre-tensioned rock bolted systems is described identifying the contribution to support efficiency given by the adoption of tensioning in full column resin anchors. The results obtained highlight that the effectiveness of the pre-tensioned load is dependant on the rock mass quality and in- situ stress level at the site where it is to be used.

The nature of competition in the coal market tends to deplete the most favorable coal reserves first, and forces subsequent development of mines in more extreme ground conditions such as those associated with multiple-seam mining. In fact, 70% of the United States coal reserves are in multiple-seam situations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop mine design algorithms that will result in safer multiple seam mines. This paper presents an overview of multiple seam issues in the central Appalachian coalfields. To date, more than 50 case histories have been analyzed from 20 operating mines in Eastern KY, Western VA, and Southern WV. Each case history is classified according to the degree of multiple-seam interaction, ranging from no apparent interaction to severe interaction with direct impacts on mine safety and resource recovery. The case histories are also examined with regard to amount and geologic characteristics of interburden and overburden, and design stability factors. The sequence of mining has also been found to be critical when the lower seam is fully-extracted. This paper compares current case histories to traditional rules of thumb. In addition two situations were modeled using LaModel software. LaModel has been upgraded to import pillar grids and topographic data from AutoCAD files. The cases presented demonstrate vertical stress capabilities of LaModel.

This paper describes the experiences with the application of the Coal Mining Roof Rating (CMRR) System to South African strata conditions. Roof classification studies using the CMRR system were undertaken as part of a SIMRAC investigation into falls of ground in South Mean collieries. Colliery roof rating exercises were undertaking in a range of geotechnical conditions from shallow level coal seams under flat topography to workings with cover depths of greater than 300m A comparison is made between the CMRR and other Rock Mass Rating systems used to classify different roof geotechnical conditions. The need for geological discontinuity orientation, blasting and rockmass stress adjustments to the CMRR is discussed. The effects of acid mine water on strata weatherability and the need to incorporate immersion tests using acid mine water are also detailed. In addition limited correlation is given between CMRR values and other geotechnical factors such as joint trace length, joint shear strength, joint orientation, weatherability and roof damage due to horizontal stress. Taking cognizance of these observations, a concept of stress induced roof damage triggering is discussed.
