Sunshine Mining Co.'s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. M.S. Azun The authors' paper did not explain the facts and reasons why state companies are established and what their role is in international industrial mineral trading. Also, I do not agree with the conclusion implying that the main goal for state companies is to capitilize natural resources. Almost all state companies are founded by certain laws and their activities are arranged by state regulations. Their only aim is to operate mineral deposits for their people and to protect the rights of the people. Although some ore deposits, such as nonstrategic or small, may be exploited by privately owned companies, the state has the right to control the operation and production. Activities of state companies may or may not be widened because of the character of the deposits and the importance of the mineral market involved. For some countries, although governments may occasionally change hands, the policy of the mineral trading system is not affected by this change. There is no doubt that any government desires to make more earnings to increase GNP, when it is involved in operating and trading mines. It wants to produce and sell the finished products, instead of unprocessed ones, if possible. When it is known that some mineral deposits are relatively rare, such as Turkish boron deposits, the government can nationalize the mines to control production and affect the market. If there is an abundance of a certain mineral in the market, the government can cut production and set a floor price, such as Canadian potash. Also, when production of a specific mineral is unique, such as Turkish chromite, the price of such mineral may be set by correspondant government. One may add that if some governments with their state companies produce a certain mineral in a larger amount, they may decide to establish a cartel to protect their production and price. These are the facts followed by government-owned state companies and partially government-owned companies. The reason being charge of many deposits by the state companies is always the same: "protect" the mineral rights of the people.

Five sulfide minerals from the Magiwnt mine, southeast Missouri were analyzed for 31 trace elements in over 300 samples by laser microprobe spectrographic analysis of polished sections. The concentration of several trace elements shows a pattern of progressive variation with depth (space) and variation with different paragenetic stages (time) of each mineral. Factor analysis of the geochemical data shows sympathetic correlation both in space and in time of Bi, Cd, Ge, and Sn in galena and sphalerite, and Ni and Co in sphalerite and marcasite.

The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program since 1974 has been designed to accomplish a comprehensive coverage of the 48 conterminous States and Alaska to evaluate the total uranium resources of the USA. This resource base includes both ore reserves and potential resources. Techniques include airborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, by hydrogeochemical surveys, surface and subsurface geologic studies, and the application of improved geochemical exploration and resource assessment methods (Table 1). In brief review, the current status of each of the five basic NURE elements is as follows: In the Aerial Surveys, in the conterminous 48 states, the flying has been completed in 89 of the NTMS 10 x 2° NURE quadrangles, and is in progress in 39 more (Figure 1). Complete quadrangle data have already been open filed for 46 additional quadrangles, for a total of 174 for which data gathering is either complete or in progress. In Alaska, the flying is complete in 42 quadrangles, and quadrangle data have been open filed for 34 more, for a total of 76 (Figure 2).

"Use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment was widely known. Bond also described its application for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Bond Work Index efficiency has been widely used by industry, but until now without concise standard methods, or a formal guideline, for doing so. The Bond Efficiency Sub-Committee of the Industrial Comminution Efficiency work group of GMSG has produced such a guideline, which follows. It covers the methods and provides examples of how to calculate the Bond Work Index Efficiency of most industrial grinding circuits. Bond Work Index testing equipment and methods are also provided. The next steps are: (1) to establish standard reference testing materials and one or more laboratories to serve as bases for reference testing; (2) to establish the accuracy of relative circuit Work Index Efficiency determinations; and (3), to develop and provide a public data base of industrial comminution circuit Bond Work Index Efficiencies. A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

With the aim of solving the large deformation problem of surrounding rock in coal mine roadways with a thin sand-mudstone interbed roof, transportation roadway 1603 in Haoyuan Mine was considered. The failure mechanism of surrounding rock was studied through comprehensive on-site investigations, borehole image analysis, mineral composition analysis, and other means. Numerical simulations were performed to determine the influence of roof layer thickness, lateral pressure coefficient, and coal rib strength on the stability of the interbedded roof. The main reasons for support failure and deformation of the roadway are softening and swelling of the sand-mudstone interbed roof upon exposure to water, insufficient support capacity of the roof due to the soft coal rib, an unreasonable support scheme, or poor construction quality, which can reduce the bearing capacity of surrounding rock. Based on our analysis, a control strategy was devised for a thin coal-mudstone interbed roof. The support scheme combines long and short cable support, strengthening of the coal rib to consolidate the roof, and partially shotcrete grout, and was found to improve the overall mechanical strength of surrounding rock and maintain the stability of the thin sand-mudstone interbed roof. The results of the numerical simulations and monitoring data indicated that the proposed support scheme effectively controls the deformation of the surrounding rock of thin sand-mudstone interbed roof of coal mine roadways while maintaining the safety and stability of the surrounding rock and supporting structure.

For the first half of the 21st Century the USA will rely on the same mix of fuels as for the past 50 years: Petroleum will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in severe stress on gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging ‘piggy-back’ trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

It hardly needs to be repeated that if coal is to continue as America’s premier source of cheap energy, it is absolutely necessary that the carbon dioxide from its combustion somehow be sequestered. A promising method proposed to accomplish this is the “indirect” carbonation of serpentine in a concentrated magnesium chloride brine. Indirect carbonation could be also applied to precipitate magnesium in lateritic nickel processing: this would not only solve magnesium-control problems in laterite hydrometallurgy, but also reduce its energy requirements and create CO2-sequestration credits. Fifty-five percent of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal-fired power plants, and American coal reserves can last over 500 years at 1990-level consumption1. Coal is therefore both abundant and cheap: it could (and in fact probably will) continue to be an affordable source of energy, both for producing electricity and as a feedstock for liquid hydrocarbon production by Fischer-Tropsch reactions. As a result, it is important to find a workable method of permanently sequestering CO2.

"The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

Powered haulage and haul truck-related fatal accidents are among the most frequent at surface mines. Industry organizations developed guidance on accident scenarios to address haul truck and mobile equipment collision-related accidents. However, there is a need to investigate accident data to prioritize these scenarios and identify factors relevant to developing validation methods for collision warning/avoidance technologies and determining their capabilities and limitations. Standards and effective validation methods are necessary for improving system efficacy within mining operations and promoting industry adoption. To address these needs, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated available powered-haulage and machinery-related fatal accident reports documented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Their objective was to gain a perspective for informing the development of test protocols and validation methods through determining the most prevalent accident scenarios and related factors. Our findings afford insight for addressing the most prevalent haul truck scenarios and relevant factors within U.S. surface mining environments.

At the end of the first decade of digital computing in the minerals industry, geostatistics in North America was still in its infancy. This was in contrast with the rest of the world where the technique of kriging was already widely practiced. By the end of the 1970s, there was increasing awareness among practitioners of its potential. But it was not until the late 1980s that geostatistics was universally applied and accepted. This was due, in large measure, to contributors at Applications of Computers and Operations Research in the Minerals Industry (APCOM) symposia. Such an evolution in new computer methods could again be observed at APCOM 26.

In Tunisia, the Paleocene-Eocene series has an important socio-economic interest. It contains profitable oil and water accumulations. Moreover, it encompasses phosphate reserves. The present study uses seismic reflection prospection and borehole data for the reconstitution of the Paleocene-Eocene deposit structure in the Jerid area (southwestern Tunisia), a crucial step for the phosphate exploitation. Firstly, lithostratigraphic correlations incorporating water and petroleum wells were established according to different directions for a tentative approximation of the Paleocene- Eocene deposit geometry by following their lateral evolution. To give more details, seismic reflection profiles were interpreted in the second step. The Paleocene-Eocene formations were associated with their corresponding reflectors on the closest seismic profile using the relation of time and depth in petroleum wells. Analysis of lithostratigraphic correlations shows notable variations in the Paleocene-Eocene series thickness and depth. Seismic profile interpretation explains these variations by highlighting different buried tectonic features. The results confrontation reveals that the phosphatic deposit geometry in the Jerid area is mainly influenced by the (1) emergence of the Saharan platform and the Chott northern chain since the Late Cretaceous, (2) syn-sedimentary normal activity of E-W and NE-SW faults during the Paleocene-Eocene epoch, (3) reverse-reactivation of these faults, and (4) major Tortonian folding phase. This study can enormously enhance the Jerid area socio-economic development by presenting useful findings that may orientate the phosphate exploration.

"The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and mineral materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Understanding mineral exploration activities and trends assists government policy makers, minerals industry decision makers and research entities in identifying where future sources of mineral supply are likely to be discovered, the amount and type of these resources and factors that may affect exploration and development.This review summarizes significant exploration trends related to active sites and budgets, mineral commodities and regional factors for the years 2001-2015. Data were compiled by specialists in the USGS-NMIC, and reported annually in the USGS-NMIC Minerals Yearbook series and in the May issue of Mining Engineering magazine. External data for these analyses were derived from industry sources, published literature, and SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY).The USGS-NMIC compiled exploration site data for more than 80 mineral commodities, focusing on base metals, diamond and precious metals. More than $138 billion constant U.S. dollars were budgeted by the minerals industry from 2001 through 2015 to explore more than 16,000 mineral deposits globally (SNL Metals & Mining, 2016a). Annual analyses identified where mineral exploration took place by principal commodity target, ranked the magnitude of activity in each region, identified the factors that most affected changes in exploration activity and highlighted developments that led to changes in global supply or increased diversity of supply to the United States. Geographic classifications noted in this report were Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Latin America, Pacific, Russia, United States and Rest of the World."

When Lewis and Clark first pushed their boats up the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis reported the presence of coal in the western states by saying in 1802 that it "burnt tolerably well and afforded but little flame or smoke but produced a hot and lasting fire". Lewis would have been amazed and bewildered at the history of coal development in this region and the more recent political-socio-economic-environmental confrontations of today. Certainly without this coal the railroads would not have readily pushed into our western states, and the progress of this region would have suffered. The coal industry has passed from a period when "coal was king" to a period of depression in the industry, but its importance is being revived. A contributing and simultaneous environmental concern has emerged in the nation and in many states during the past ten years, partly caused by newly imposed standards for sulfur content of fuels. Much of the midwest and eastern coal cannot be used because of high sulfur content, shifting attention to the low sulfur coal deposits of the western states. In the western states, lands disturbed by strip mining or even underlain by strippable coal are small compared to the total acreage, and usually mining operations are on lands not under cultivation. There are some farm lands being disturbed by surface mining, but this is often over-emphasized. In states like New Mexico and Arizona the percentage is less. The value of the minerals underlying the surface certainly must be considered along with the value of the surface, and sometimes proper reclamation following mining can result in higher ultimate usage of the land.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.
