Base metals and platinum group metals can be collected in metallic alloy form, via a wide variety of smelting processes. The recovery, or degree of collection, of the valuable metals is a function of the extent of reduction in the furnace, which, in turn, is indicated by the fraction of iron present in the feed materials that report to the alloy. An equation has been developed that relates the recovery of various metals (such as Ni, Co, Cr, and PGMs) to the recovery of Fe. This recovery equation (for each metal) is characterized by a single parameter (K?) that can either be empirically fitted to the data, or expressed in terms of the equilibrium constant and the ratios of the activity coefficients involved. Data from a number of varied DC arc furnace campaigns are presented to illustrate this behaviour.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

"Metix has introduced a three-piece ’deep-cooled’ copper slag tapblock into a six in-line copper matte settling electric furnace. The tapblock was designed without any internal refractory; it relies purely on the development and maintenance of a freeze lining on its hot face and within the tapping channel to protect the copper and promote the integrity of the surrounding endwall refractory lining. In addition, the geometry of the tapblock further supports the sidewall refractories, reduces the impact of funnelling and, therefore, the need for premature rebuilding of the furnace endwall, and facilitates easy removal and replacement of the wear components even under ’hot’ furnace conditions. Eighteen thermocouples embedded in the copper components ensure full resolution of the copper condition, enabling plant personnel to identify wear rates, estimate freeze lining thickness and stability, and schedule replacement of spares and wear components well in advance.At the time of writing the tapblock had been in operation for 6 months with approximately 350 000 t of slag having been tapped through it. Every indication is that the design will limit the need for premature relining of the furnace endwall due to rapid deterioration of the tapblock and its surrounding refractories. IntroductionNonferrous furnaces rely heavily on the maximization of refractory campaign life to increase profitability and reduce planned downtime. In large electric copper slag-cleaning furnaces utilizing insulating linings, campaign lives of six or more years are realistic if consideration is given to each aspect that can degrade the refractory lining during the campaign. An area that is particularly vulnerable is the slag tap-hole and the local surrounding refractory. To avoid premature relining of the furnace walls, every effort should be made to consider not only the tap-hole design itself, but also the selection of the sidewall refractory material and its construction immediately adjacent to the tap-hole, and furthermore the interplay between the tapblock and this adjacent refractory. A holistic approach to the design that considers these interdependent features in the slag tapping area can reduce the incidence of accelerated refractory wear (‘funnelling’), support the surrounding refractories to prevent their collapse, introduce easily replaceable wear components that can be exchanged with the furnace still ‘hot’, and encourage and maintain a stable freeze lining at the refractory hot face that maximizes the tapblock and refractory lifetime."

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

The Principality of Asturias is a region situated in Northern Spain with two centuries of tradition in underground coal mining. In addition, its uneven relief has obliged the construction of a great number of tunnels both for railways and roads. Basing on this experience and an ever increasing need to improve on safety, the Barredo Foundation dependent on the Regional Government and the University, provides and manages a Centre for Research of Fires and Ventilation in Tunnels. The Centre has as its most important infrastructure, a tunnel 540 m long, 9,5 m wide and 8,0 m high at centre. This section coupled with ventilation equipment allows the simulation of risk conditions at real scale, which is achieved by modifying the geometry of the section and through two powerful stations situated one at either en of the tunnel. In addition, the Centre houses two test benches for fans and electrical motors at high temperatures. One bench with a re-circulation conduit is the most appropriate for tests in Transversal and Semi-transversal type of installations. The other, is for the testing of electrical motors or fans which operate in zones where the surrounding temperature is high. In this Centre, training has also been developed for Fire Fighters and Civilian Protection Personnel who have to work in fire and smoke rescue conditions in underground structures. Testing conducted at real scale enables this formation and also to improve different computer programmes in the field of Fires and Ventilation.

Irrational usage of mineral commodities leads to depletion of natural resources and various ecological violations in natural environment. Fulfilment of a number of measures and strategic decisions by given problems requires a correct forecast of trends of social-economic systems. For solving the task of long-term forecasting special procedures, considering Kondratyev’s big cycles of world conjuncture, have been embedded into algorithms of unknown parameters identification and recovering of factors of different countries mineral resources production and consumption models. In the paper the classification of long cycles types, existing forecasting algorithms on the basis of Kondratyev’s ‘long waves’ or ‘K-waves’ and the modified algorithm, developed by us, which allows to reduce time and financial expenses and to improve the forecast quality, are presented. Furthermore, the article includes several forecasts of mining branch corrected models factors, received by us, permitting complex prognosis of economic and social development of different scale and control level systems. In the paper workability of proposed forecasting algorithms on the base of ‘K-waves’ and adequacy of created models to researched processes are proved.

Mantoverde Division of Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos S.A., Anglo American Chile, developed an open pit mine to exploit copper oxide ore. Mantoverde mine is located in the Province of Chañaral, Northern Chile, about 1,020 Km far from Santiago. Currently, the East wall of the mine is reaching the condition of final pit. To evaluate the possibility of a pit optimization on this wall a geotechnical study was performed, including slope stability analyses by limit equilibrium and numerical methods. As a result of this geotechnical evaluation, it was decided to allow a probability of failure of 12% for instabilities affecting up to 600,000 tonnes, and use steeper slopes on the East Wall of the mine. This paper describes this geotechnical evaluation and how the results of the stability analyses were used to define a flexible slope design, which allows modification if the observed slope behaviour deviated from the expected one.

PZH (Pan Zhi Hua) Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation, the biggest steel company in southwest China, has been using titanium-vanadium-magnetite as the main raw materials for blast furnace iron making processing for over 30 years. One of the problems that has a negative affect on the blast furnace operation is slag foaming. Based on the chemical components of the blast furnace slag-bearing higher TiO2, the foaming properties were studied. The TiO2content, which is calculated according to the total titanium content in all the forms of titanium compound in the slag, in this research is 30% weight per cent. Different forms of titanium compounds have different actions on the slag foaming behaviour that depends on the reduction condition in the blast furnace. The relationships among slag foaming performance and the binary alkalinity of the slag, the content of CaF2, MnO in slag, and the amount of gas injected in slag are investigated. The results show CaF2 and MnO have a stronger anti-foaming affect on the slag, even in the lower percentage. In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

The purpose of the project was to optimize load haul dump (LHD) machinery use as they were spending too much time doing what they should not be doing. During the investigation, the author found that the machine's actual availability was 86% and the utilization ranged between 30% and 42%. This shows that the availability of the machine has met its target. Therefore the main problem was with the LHD utilization and that is what the project focuses on. To satisfy the objectives, the author firstly studied the existing mining data like the key performance indicators (KPIs) in order to analyse the machine's availability and utilization; this is what gave direction to the problem. Secondly the author did a literature review on mines with similar problems. This gave the author ideas on what to look at in approaching such a situation. Thirdly, the author gathered information on what the LHDs are doing on a daily basis by doing a time study. This gave the author an idea of how long it took the LHDs to complete a specific task. The author also interviewed operators and their supervisors in order to find the best practice work. This helped in identifying the problem areas when comparing the best practice work with what the LHDs are actually doing. According to the project results, it was found that the LHDs are underutilized due to shortage of drivers and the long distances the LHDs have to travel for material loading and refuelling. The author recommended that the machine utilization should be improved by training more operators in order to eliminate the 'no operator' downtime; the cost arrangement of this recommendation is included in the report. The author also recommended that the travelling time should be reduced by using tractors instead of LHDs when long distances need to be travelled for material loading. Another recommendation for reducing travelling time was to bring the mobile fuel tank closer to a section; the cost arrangement for this recommendation is also included in the report. The lining, together with the electrodes, forms the heart of the operation of a submerged arc furnace. Subsequent to a lining failure on M12 furnace during the early 1980s, Metalloys was active in investigating the concept of thermally efficient ?freeze? linings for its furnaces. The theory revolved around that, not only would, thermally efficient linings result in significant cost savings, but they would also last longer as a result of being subjected to less harsh operational conditions. After having proved the concept on the .smaller. furnaces, Metalloys decided to implement the concept on its largest submerged arc furnace, M12 Subsequent to having recovered from an impending failure of a lining installed in 1981 in M12 in the mid 1980s, Metalloys managed, through rigid lining management, to extend the life of this lining to 1999. At the end of 1999 the decision to replace the lining in the furnace with a ?freeze? lining was made and planning and design proceeded in earnest. This paper discusses the options considered in making the final decision. The features of the design of the lining are also discussed. Consideration is given to the furnace shell cooling system as a result of its importance in maintaining the thermal equilibrium in the lining. Note is made of the fact that the purchase of a .freeze. lining is an expensive exercise but that the time savings in the installation of the lining and the efficiency improvements during operation far outweigh the additional capital cost. The experience on M12 has been that the payback period of the marginal capital expenditure is less than three years. As a result of the opportunity to reline a furnace the size of M12 not presenting itself very often, the learning points from the installation of the lining and the operational advantages and disadvantages are significant. Finally, the point is made that the project had its pros and cons but overall the success of the project has been evident and, as such, the ?freeze? lining is likely to become the norm at Metalloys.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

In this study Pt-Al thin films were prepared via electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) with an atomic concentration ratio of Pt25:Al75. These films were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 150°C to 650°C for annealing times from 4 to 60 minutes. The resulting microstructure of these thin films were obtained via secondary electron imaging used in conjunction with depth profiling with the aid of scanning auger microscopy (PHI 700).Elemental maps of the micrographs were obtained. Simulations, based on a chemical potential Monte Carlo method1, were run for various interaction parameters. From these simulations theoretical depth-profiles and proposed microstructures were obtained. These were compared to the experimentally measured depth profiles and elemental maps. A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start-up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators, in particular, to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement of operating this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ?400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomization. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to HATCH high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tap blocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area), coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the HATCH Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

Iron ore pellets are a preferred feedstock for ironmaking. One method used for pelletizing is the grate-kiln process, first established in 1960.During the past decade, the establishment of new grate-kiln plants has increased rapidly, especially in China, and new constructors of pellet plants have started to operate in the market. It is well known that the grate-kiln method yields a superior and more consistent pellet quality compared with the straight-grate process. However, certain issues exist with the grate-kiln plant, which are discussed here, together with proposed practical solutions.

"Cobre Las Cruces mine extracts copper minerals from a VMS deposit located in the well-known Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). As an open pit, it is distinguished geologically from other IPB mines by the presence of around 150 m of Tertiary soft marls, known locally as the Guadalquivir Blue Marls, followed by a regionally important aquifer. Below the marls and aquifer the mineralization is hosted by rocks typical of the Palaeozoic within the IPB, comprising gossan, tuffs, slates, and sulphides.This combination of a substantially soft rock and more competent, older (but still occasionally problematic) Palaeozoic lithologies constitutes a unique geological framework and presents substantial challenges in maintenance of slope stability, and therefore operational safety, at the mine site. This paper describes the fundamental design, excavation, and monitoring measures implemented at the mine to maintain safe production, and the lessons learnt during the mine development. IntroductionAs a modern Spanish mine, Las Cruces is committed to the use of best available technology and practices with the aim of guaranteeing the production of ore in a safe environment. From a practical perspective, this implies the realization of a high quality pit design, ongoing geotechnical mapping of exposed slopes to ensure conformity with design, and use of leading geotechnical surveillance technology to complement visual observations. The focus of this article is to illustrate how, at a mine site with potentially problematic soil/rock conditions, multiple advanced techniques employed from design stage analysis through to final pit configuration and vigilance, were combined to achieve an overall control of the ground conditions. Premier Diamond Mine exploits a kimberlite orebody using cave mining methods. A drilling level is established at the base of a block of ore to effect undercutting that leads to caving of the overlying ore. A second level is developed some 15 metres below the undercutting level to allow extraction of the ore once it has caved. As much as 45 per cent of the rock is removed on the extraction level creating a series of pillars. Undercutting creates abutment stresses, as high as 3 times the virgin stress, which affect the rock mass to a distance of 20 metres from the undercut face on the undercut level and on the extraction level 15 metres below. If the extraction level is completely developed prior to undercutting, where stress levels exceed 20 percent of the rock mass strength, extensive rock mass and support damage occurs as the undercut passes overhead. Rock mass damage takes the form of movement along existing joints and minor shear failure through intact rock. Support damage takes the form of cracking in rigid concrete linings. Where induced stresses exceed 50 per cent of the rock mass strength it is often impractical to keep excavations on the extraction level open. Rock mass damage takes the form of extensive failure of the rock in shear which evidences itself as propagation of the fracture zone around tunnels and footwall heave. Support damage results in destruction of shotcrete linings and concrete footwalls. As the interbolt support fails, badly fractured rock ravels around the steel tendons. Observation and monitoring at Premier Mine and on other cave mines has shown that induced stress levels and consequent damage are a function of :?the extraction ratio on the undercut and extraction level prior to undercutting ?the shape of the undercut face ?the rate of undercut advance ?the distance of leads and lags between adjacent tunnels on the undercut level. To ensure the stability of excavations, all of the above parameters must be carefully planned and the planned mining sequence rigidly enforced. The minimum of development is completed on the extraction level prior to the undercut passing overhead. Required development is then rapidly completed once the area has been de-stressed. Support is installed in three phases: ?Rockbolts are installed as soon as excavations are developed ?Wire mesh, steel tendon straps and a layer of shotcrete sufficient to protect the mesh and straps from damage by blasting and LHD loading is installed as soon as practical thereafter. Inevitably the shotcrete lining has to be replaced once the undercut has passed overhead.. ?Rigid shotcrete linings and concreted footwalls are completed only after the undercut has passed overhead and the area has been de-stressed.

Experimental studies on viscosity of titanium bearing slags have been reviewed and the assessed data were used in extending the capability of the structurally related viscosity model for silicate melts, developed by the present authors. Experimental data on ternary and higher order systems containing CaO, MgO, MnO, FeO, Al2O3, TiO2, Ti2O3, SiO2were assessed and used. The newly extended viscosity model represented the viscosity behaviour over broad temperature and composition ranges. The structural role played by TiO2and Ti2O3in silicate network structure is discussed with respect to their effect on viscosity of melts. The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.
