Extraction of molybdenum from molybdenite ore by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau o f Mines. Various parameters affecting molybdenum extraction, such as salt concentration, temperature, treatment rate, current density, and particle size, were studied. Molybdenum extraction of 95.2 percent was achieved on a laboratory scale from an ore containing 0.35 percent molybdenite. Corresponding power consumption was 24 kwhr per pound of molybdenum extracted with a base consumption of 4.5 pounds of sodium carbonate. Laboratory and pilot plant experiments are in progress on low-grade molybdenum concentrates containing rhenium and copper. Preliminary results indicate that molybdenum extractions in the 90- to 99-percent range and rhenium extractions of 93 to 99 percent can he obtained without appreciable oxidation of associated copper minerals.

This paper describing the timekeeping and pay-roll methods of the Britannia raining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of nines regarding office procedures in connection with mining operations. The general office of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is located at Britannia Beach, B. C., a town of about 600 inhabitants at tidewater on the east side of Howe Sound and about 30 miles from Vancouver, B. C. The Beach, as it is locally termed, is a company town consisting largely of about 250 employees of the company and their families. Here is the milling and concentrating plant of over 6,000 tons daily capacity- the main service units comprising the electrical, mechanical, blacksmith and woodworking shops and the local electric-furnace foundry; the central-heating steam plant; the air and electric generating units; the ball-manufacturing plant; the warehouses; and the general store, which serves this community and also acts as distributor for the general stores located elsewhere on the property.

A study was made of filtration techniques for recovering the major part of the tin contained in iron - tin alloys known as hardhead . Special smallscale filtering apparatus and a three - stage cyclic process were developed . Eighty- seven percent of the tin contained in an alloy of 82 percent tin and 17 percent iron was recovered as pure metal by pressing at 975° C followed by a second pressing at 800 ° C and a final filtering at 250 ° C. Small amounts of Sb , Cu , and Fe impurities were removed by adding Al to the molten product and performing another filtration at 250 ° C.

Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

Utilization of domestic ores in the winning of metallurgical alumina requires a convenj.ent method of treating siliceous bauxites and other aluminous materials. In the United states there are only small reserves of high-grade bauxite but considerably larger tonnages of low-grade material. In addition, there are large deposits of high-alumina clays. If these high-silica bauxites or high-alumina clays could be beneficiated, either by are dressing or by chemical dissolution to remove a large proportion of the silica, then the potential reserves of aluminum ores would be increased materially. Faced with a similar situation, the German industry, chiefly dependent on high-grade French bauxites prior to World War II, was compelled during the war to Use lower-grade ores. For desilicating the lower-grade bauxites before the Bayer treatment, a method was developed in which the bauxite was calcined and then given a dilute caustic leach preliminary to the pressure digestion. It was planned to regenerate the caustic by treatment of the desilication liquor with lime. As European bauxites are mineralogically different from those found in this country, preliminary work was undertaken to determine whether this process might be applied to domestic materials. The results of this work, along with a review of the German process, are presented in this report.

Completion of 18 churn-drill holes totaling 2,218 feet and 3 diamond-drill holes aggregating 421.5 feet of drilling in the M.C. mine area, near Truman, Wis., provided information indicating the existence and trend of a zone of zinc mineralization extending for 1,000 feet west of the old M. C. shaft.

A deterministic model to assess the hydrologic impact of small watersheds subjected to unsteady storm events is presented. The overland flow model is based on the kinematic wave approximation coupled with a Green-Ampt infiltration equation. The Green-Ampt infiltration parameters are estimated using the USDA-ARS parameter estimation technique which is based on soil moisture-tension data. A Galerkin finite element formulation of the kinematic wave approximation is presented for the deterministic analysis of overland flow on small watersheds. The finite element formulation includes linear, quadratic and cubic Lagrangian one-dimensional spatial elements. A linear time variation is assumed which includes both explicit and implicit time marching algorithms, depending on the choice of the time weighting parameter. The implicit time algorithms result in a system of nonlinear equations which are evaluated using a modified Newton-Raphson iteration scheme. Initial solution estimates are generated using a linear finite difference procedure. The coupled infiltration overland flow model is tested using storm data for impervious surfaces, a laboratory soil flume, and two natural, USDA-ARS experimental watersheds.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential supply of cobalt from known domestic resources, both as a primary product from some deposits and as a byproduct from others, and found that U.S. production could play an important role in meeting U.S. cobalt needs by the mid-1980's. This production would be of a relatively short duration, however, with production declining significantly before the year 2000. As part of the study, a tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of cobalt that could be produced from known cobalt-bearing deposits at various primary commodity prices and at a 15-percent rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs are calculated in August 1980 dollars, and commodity prices are based on August 1980 prices. Known U.S. cobalt-bearing deposits which represent the current U.S. cobalt reserve base contain some 310,800 metric tons of cobalt in slightly over 1 billion metric tons of demonstrated mineralized material. Approximately 37 percent of the cobalt contained in the reserve base is considered recoverable using existing technology. Of this quantity, some 87,000 metric tons of cobalt is economically recoverable assuming a cobalt price of $25 per pound, a copper price of $1 per pound, and a lead price of $0.40 per pound. Assuming that the cobalt price decreases to $15 per pound, keeping copper and lead prices constant, the quantity that is considered economically recoverable declines to some 45,700 metric tons. Domestic cobalt consumption in 1979 was 7,900 metric tons (17.4 million pounds). Currently, no primary cobalt is produced from domestic resources, and none has been produced since 1971.

The mining industry of the United States has for many years possessed the dubious aistinction of having the poorest accident rate of all of the major lines of industrial endeavor in this country, and until recently there ras little or nothing to show that any material improvement might be expected. However, there are now numerous trends indicating that the corner has ceen turned at last, and it is strongly hoped that the mining industry is likely to follow the railroads, the cement and other industries in operating with occurrence of only a reasonable amount of loss of life and limb through accidents. The complete accident figures for metal and nonmetallic mineral mining for 1931 are not yet available, but fragmentary data shor that 1831 vill un- questionably have very low accident rates, probably the lowest in the history of our metal mines. One underground metal mine has produced over 14,000,000 tons of copper ore rithout a fatality; another metal mining company with an electric slovel operation has handled upwards of 75,000,000 tons of material, copper ore and waste, without the occurrence of a fatality; an iron-ore compan, which orns six mines (three underground, three open pit), has operated every one for a year or more without a lost-time accident with a con- siderable number of employees and a large production; and alot.er iron-ore producer with 30 mines and about 3,000 employees as an average of nearly 10 months of operation in 1931 without a lost-time accident. umerous other wonderful safety records of metal mines in 1931 indicate unmistaimbly tat the record of the noncoal mining industry of the United States as a role in 1931 will undoubtedly be found to be excellent. According to the latest relatively complete figures (those of 1930) available for the coal industry, fewer than 650,000 persons are employed in and around the coal mines of the United States, the figures indicating at a little over 493,000 people are engaged in bituminous mining and a little under 151,CCO in anthracite mining. The growing popularity of perlite (sometimes spelled pearlite) as a raw material for thermal expansion into pumicelike products in the Western States has prompted a preliminary investigation of the properties of such material and the problems that want solution to put a perlite industry on a firm foundation. The Bureau of Mines is undertaking the gathering of data and the solution of these problems, and the following paper records some of the available information. and the promise of the material, with some comparisons of advantages of the various competing lightweight aggregates that can be made from siliceous volcanic glasses and rocks containing entrapped or dissolved water that causes their expansion on' quick heating to their softening points. This new industrial rock has caught the fancy of the mineral industry in the western States because it has Fume advantages over natural pumice. Chemically, it is typified as rhyolitic in composition, and one may find obsidian, rhyolite, pumice, pumicite, and perlite from the same vant and contemporaneous in origin. The material need not be rhyolite but should be a siliceous or acid lava and contain 2 to 5 percent water still in "solution" in the rock. On quick heating to the softening temperature the material puffs, due to conversion of the contained eater into bubbles of steam. Slow heating causes gradual release of the imprisoned water by decrepitation and. cracking and-results in, very little puffing. Perlite is often in the form of ovoid volcanic bombs formed by explosive eruption of large masses of lava into the air, where they, quickly cool, with escape of little of the contained water, exceptt perhaps for a hollow interior. Since they cool in layers they have an onion-type structure and a pearly luster from interference of light between the. layers, which is' the origin of the name "perlite." Perlite may occur in intruded flows that have been quickly cooled and partly expanded but retained most of their magmatic water content. Obsidian may be the same lava cooled quickly under conditions that prevented crystallization of feldspars and other minerals, leaving the volcanic glass that may or may not retain all of the original contained water.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated leaching automobile catalysts with sodium cyanide (NaCN) solutions at high temperatures to recover platinum-group metals (PGM). The feed was virgin monolith rejects, used monolith, and used pellet catalysts. Leaching with a 5-pct NaCN solution for 1 h at 160° C dissolved over 97 pct of the PGM in the virgin monolith, over 85 pct of the PGM in the used monolith, and over 90 pct of the PGM in the used pellet catalyst. Over 99.8 pct of the dissolved PGM was recovered as a precipitate by heating the solution to 250° C for 1 h in an autoclave. The cyanide complexes were decomposed, and free cyanide was destroyed.

This paper, which describes mining methods and practices at the Hurricane Creek bauxite mine of Reynolds Mining Corp. in central Arkansas, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The Hurricane Creek mine is in sec. 12, T. 2 S., R. 14 W., and sees. 7 and 18, T. 2 S., R. 13 W., Saline County, Ark., about 4 miles east of Bauxite. (See fig. 1.) Bauxite has been mined underground at the Hurricane Creek property since 1942. The operation is notable for relatively high recovery of bauxite under the adverse conditions of unconsolidated water-bearing overburden and unstable clay floor. Controlled caving, timbered stope walls, and efficient drainage systems on the surface and underground have minimized the problems and raised ore recovery about 25 percent above that formerly obtained.

A combined ion - exchange X- ray spectrographic method was developed and evaluated for determining trace amounts of cobalt and nickel in high - purity tungsten and tungsten trioxide . The sensitivity for both cobalt and nickel is in the range from 0.2 to 0.5 μg ( 0.04 to 0.1 ppm , based on 5 gram samples ) . Accuracy at the 5 to 20 μg level is ±10 percent of the amount present . Approximately 16 hours elapsed time is required for analysis

The objective of this investigation was to synthesize and investigate the properties of a high-temperature refractory material based on a combination of boron, silica, and magnesium. A magnesium-thermic reaction was used for the synthesis. X-ray examination of the product indicates that the crystalline portion of the composition is a combination of magnesium borides, magnesium silicate, and magnesium orthoborate. Chemical analysis of a representative sample shows, in weight-percent, boron 17.6, silicon 23.9, magnesium 17.8, and chromium 0.5. The balance is largely oxygen. The composition is resistant to high temperatures under oxidizing conditions and is stable in water, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen. It has a low density (less than 3 grams per cubic centimeter) and a hardness value in the range of quartz. It has a melting point above 1,700° C. and can be hot-pressed to shape in the temperature range between 1,200° and 1,350° C. The properties described in this paper indicate that the material may have some uses as a high-temperature refractory, and because of its boron content it may have some value as a thermal-neutron-absorption material.

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a yielding steel post for underground mine support. The report covers concept development, laboratory tests, modifications, and field evaluations. The objective of this work was to develop a stiff support member capable both of supporting high loads and yielding when excessive amounts of mine entry closure were present. The 6-to 7-ft steel post was designed to yield nearly 2 ft while maintaining a 45-ton (force) load. The post is a three-piece unit consisting of top and bottom telescoping legs and a separate foot bracket. It develops its load-carrying characteristics when the lower pipe, with an attached interference ring, is forced into the larger top pipe. Laboratory tests were used to determine critical loads and post performance for various post lengths. Field tests showed that the posts could perform in actual mining conditions. The post has the ability to provide support in highly yielding ground and also, because of its slender profile, enhance ventilation and provide more area for travelways and escapeways. The design is simple enough to allow for fabrication at most mine shop facilities.

Alpha silicon nitride fibers , Si3N4 , were successfully grown in graphite crucibles by a new method utilizing silicates and silicon ( S in equations below) as sources of silicon and using carbon , aluminum , and silicon as reducing agents (R in equations below ) . The basic reaction mechanism is believed to be generally as follows : 1,300 - 1,500 ° C S + R + N₂ SiO + RO + N₂ › 3Si0 + R + 2N₂ _1,300 - 1,500° C 3RO + Si¸N • ( 1 ) ( 2 ) A build - up of coatings on the solid raw- material particles hindered the evolution of silicon or silicon monoxide vapor and thereby slowed down further formation of silicon nitride fibers . Free oxygen in the crucible caused the formation of amorphous silicon dioxide ( SiO2 ) fibers . This problem was solved by passing , entering , and exiting gases through layers of lump graphite inside the reaction vessel . The silicon nitride fibers grew best around 1,400 ° C. Nitrogen flow rates from 4 to 6 liters per minute were adequate . The fiber widths were generally only a few microns whereas their lengths sometimes reached one - quarter inch or more . Chemical and X- ray analyses indicated that bulk fiber samples were usually 80 to 90 percent Si3N4 . The fibers had good oxidation resistance to about 1,260 ° C. Thermal shock resistance was excellent . Electrical resistance was determined .

The " periodic pincer " herein described fills a need for a device to control the rate of flow of a wet ore pulp through an orifice . Two uses of the periodic pincer to be discussed are on classifiers and on a wet ore feeder . Although the immediate necessity that brought about this device was for better operation of a miniature hydraulic classifier , in connection with an investigation of iron- ore concentration being conducted by the Federal · Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the University of Alabama , the device has promise of a wider field of application . In the iron - ore work , the need became so acute for a nonchoking , uniform - delivery classifier spigot that development of a suitable device was imperative .
