In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 29,020 acres of the 43,165-acre Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area (MT-024-684) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. Within this report, these 29,020 acres are referred to as the study area. Located in Custer and Prairie Counties, MT, the study area is about 2 miles northwest of Terry. The study area is underlain by essentially flat-lying units of the Fort Union Formation of Paleocene age with some Quaternary alluvial deposits in stream valleys. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Bentonitic clays and lignite coal units were examined and sampled; however, no clay resources or coal reserves were identified. Estimates of coal resources will be reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in a joint U.S. Geological Survey-U.S. Bureau of Mines publication. Gravel along the Yellowstone River, a source of agate for private collectors, could also be used as sand and gravel aggregate although material on the south bank of the river is closer to population centers and road systems. Clinker found in the study area could be a source of road metal, but is not well situated in relationship to areas of use. No geothermal resources have been identified although water suitable for direct heat applications may underlie the study area. All the area is leased for oil and gas exploration.

Two Federal Bureau of Mines recycle hydrogenation experiments to prepare catalytic cracking feed stock were made at 3,000 pounds pressure with crude shale oil retorted from Green River (Colo.) shale in the gas-combustion retort. The hydrogenated product from the first experiment, made at 784° F., was used for investigating the effects of nitrogen content on catalytic cracking yields and for determining the quality of the catalytically cracked gasoline. Hydrogenated product containing 0.14 percent or more of nitrogen produced less gasoline when cracked in a CAT "A" unit than was obtained from East Texas light gas oil cracked at the same conditions; product containing 0.10 percent or less nitrogen produced a quantity of cracked gasoline equal to that obtained from the East Texas light gas oil. The catalytically cracked gasoline had research octane numbers calculated to be approximately 95 clear and 103 with 3 ml. of tetraethyl lead. The principal product from the second experiment, made at 828° F., was a low nitrogen content gas oil which was used for investigating the yields of cracked products obtained when it was catalytically cracked to different degrees of conversion. Yields of cracked products, when plotted as functions of conversion, were essentially the same, within the experimental range of the data, as published yields from catalytic cracking of East Texas heavy gas oil; however, yields from cracking the shale-oil product did not display the sensitivity to change of cracking temperature that has been found for East Texas gas oil.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, explored the Crowell fluorite mine by core drilling in 1945. Claims investigated are in sec. 14, T. 12 S. R. 47 E., M. D. B. & M., in southern rye County, Nev., about 5 miles east of 'Beatty.The twelve holes drilled by the Bureau totaled 3,661 feet. During 1945 the mine operator drove extensive exploration drifts, in part to verify results of the Bureau's work. The drilling program was designed to test for extensions of ore bodies known in the mine.The Crowell mine has shipped Ore to steel plants on the west coast for the past 20 years. During the war this market called for all the fluorite the mine could produce, but previously there were periods when it was difficult to sell ore or concentrates.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research to evaluate the effects of cutter bit wear at coal mine faces. This paper addresses one element of conical bit wear, bit rotation. A discussion on mounting configura-tion and bit forces and their effects on rotation is presented. The effects on rotation and bit forces of bit attack angle, cutting depth, and skew are determined for two types of conical bits during linear cutting of sandstone-inclusive rock. The results indicate that a 10° negative skew angle and 35° attack angle produce the maximum rotation of 17.5° for each foot of cutting. Data on bit rotation and bit forces are presented in an appendix.

An impure variety of barite, which lends itself well to the manufacture of heavy drilling mud for oil wells, is widely distributed throughout the Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas. The ore mined in the area and used for drilling muds usually contains an average of 67 percent barium sulfate, although ores as low as 50 percent BaSO4 are occasionally used. Due to the increased demand for barite for drilling caused by the intense search for hew oil occurrences during the years 1945 and 1946, the Federal Bureau of Mines began an investigation of barite deposits in the Ouachita? Mountains in October 1946. In all, 10 barite deposits were examined, trenched, sampled, and studied during the investigation, which was terminated in May 1947.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a detailed study of water usage in the Wyoming mineral industry along with projections for the future In 1964, the mineral industries of Wyoming used 20 billion gallons of new water, nearly all self-supplied, and reused 72 billion gallons, a total usage of 92 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 2.8 billion gallons. About one-half of the 20 billion gallons of new water was obtained from [srface] sources and the rest from ground water. Reported costs, covering power and maintenance, for the self-supplied new water at mineral industry operations ranged from less than 1 cent to 20 cents per thousand gallons and aver-aged 8 cents. At one mineral-related operation, water was hauled by truck to supplement a well supply. The cost was $2.00 per thousand gallons delivered. However, the supplemental requirement was only 10 gpm. Cost figures for the recirculation of water, covering power and maintenance, averaged 2 cents. In terms of water usage, the value of product for the entire industry was $25 per thousand gallons of new water intake and about $180 per thousand gallons consumed. The study revealed that Wyoming has a water deficiency but that the shortage is less severe than in the arid Southwest. Projection of the water needs of the Wyoming mineral industries indicates that the demand for new water will increase from the 20 billion gallons used in 1964 to 25 billion gallons in 1980, a 25-percent increase. The projected new-water requirement for the year 2000 is 40 billion gallons, a 100-percent increase compared with the 1964 figure.

A mathematical simulation model has been devised to guide the layout of underground mine workings, drill stations, and drill holes that are established in order to search for tabular ore bodies. Developed and tested for elliptical ore shoots in fissure veins in the Galena mine, Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, the model can also be applied to ore bodies contained within sedimentary beds (for instance, many types of uranium, copper, and gold ore bodies) or other tabular structures. Programed for a time-shared digital computer, the model contains both stochastic and deterministic variables. Stochastic or natural variables include the number of ore shoots and their sizes, orientations, locations, and values. Deterministic or controllable variables include (1) locations and costs of workings; (2) drill-station locations and costs; and (3) drill hole azimuths, inclinations, lengths, and deflections, if any. For various assumptions about the stochastic variables, the model is run while the controllable variables are changed deliberately. Thus, layouts are devised to determine the percentages of the total number of assumed ore shoots found at different costs. In order to choose among the various layouts, cost-effectiveness measures are calculated.

This research was undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing steel from hydrogen - reduced , pyrophoric iron powder . Before steelmaking tests were begun , investigations were made to develop procedures for handling the pyrophoric powder safely , and melting tests were made in a single - phase , electric - arc furnace to determine inert gas requirements for preventing powder oxidation . Steelmaking tests were conducted in a conventional electric - arc furnace , usually by a two - slag basic procedure . Results of the research indicated that ( 1 ) pyrophoric powder can be handled safely and can be prevented from oxidizing excessively during charging and melting in electric - arc steelmaking furnaces ; ( 2 ) little , if any , more electrical energy is required for melting Cerro Bolivar iron powder per unit of contained iron than is required for melting heavy melting scrap ; ( 3 ) high - quality steel can be produced readily from high- grade iron powder , having recoveries up to 95 percent of the total iron ; ( 4 ) steel can be produced from simulated titaniferous , chromiferous , and manganiferous iron powders ; and ( 5 ) the electrical energy required for melting increases with increase in the proportion of slag - forming constituents in the furnace charge .

In an earlier paper (Karrick, Lewis, C. A convenient and reliable retort for assaying oil-shales for oil yield: Bureau of Mines, Reports of Investigations, Loral No. 2229, March, 1921. Reprinted in Eng. and Min. Jour, April 30, 1921, also in Mining & Met., May, 1921) which describes the apparatus and method used in the laboratories of the Bureau of times for assaying oil-shales, no mention is made of the quality of oil obtained when the apparatus is operated under conditions determined to be most suitable for producing highest yields of oils. So many inquiries regarding the nature of the oil have been received, that it seems advisable to present a short report on the subject. Experimental work indicates that it is possible to vary the quantity and quality of the oil obtainable with the assay retort from a given shale by varying the conditions of retorting. As an example, some figures that are averages for several closely agreeing tests are shown below.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. To aid in designing a continuous system for evaluating processes for converting coal to high-Btu gas] the Bureau of Mines determined the amenability of various coals and a char to hydrogasification at 800° C and 6,000 psig using a molybdenum catalyst. A lignite from Rockdale, Tex., an hvCb coal from Rock Springs, Wyo., a char from the low-temperature carbonization of the latter, an hvAb coal from Pittsburgh, Pa., and an anthracite from Luzerne County, Pa., were selected. Highest yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, 94 pet, based on maf feed, were produced from char, and lowest yields, 67 pct, were obtained from lignite. Hydrocarbon gases contained 82 to 92 pct methane, 8 to 15 pct ethane; and 1 to 3 pct propane.

In support of its objective to conserve mineral resources by minimizing premature failure of materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted a cooperative study with the U.S. Department of Energy on the erosion and abrasion resistance of hard materials for valves in coal conversion systems. This report describes a newly developed erosion-testing apparatus and presents data on the erosion resistance of over 200 materials. Erosion resistance of most metals was comparatively low. In contrast, ceramics and cermets such as B4C, WC, SiC, Si3N4, and TiB2, when fabricated to minimize porosity, displayed greater than five times the erosion resistance of metals. Coatings such as boron diffused into Mo and WC, chemical-vapor-deposited TiCN, and electrodeposited TiB2 were highly erosion resistant if applied in thicknesses ranging from 60 to 75 µm. Erosion resistance of cemented carbides was inversely related to metal binder content.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research that will lead to computer-assisted mining equipment. This research will facilitate improvements in safety by relocating workers from dangerous areas and will increase production by providing more accurate control with less downtime of equipment. A Bureau-developed microcomputer network enhances this research by permitting a group of diverse computers to interact with a mining machine as well as with each other over a common data link. The network is composed of specially integrated off-the-shelf hardware and industry-standard operating system and programming languages. Using the network, researchers can conduct various experiments with the mining machine using a diverse group of sensors, computers, and micro controllers. This report gives a brief background on the Bureau's work in computer-assisted mining, followed by discussions on the network hardware and architecture and the network packets, and an analysis of network operation.

This report deals with the changing behavior of mine roof bolt and roof rock as a result of repetitious production blasting . Observations were made in the upper shale production headings at the White Pine Copper Co. room and pillar mine , White Pine , Mich . Roof bolt compression pads and a stratascope were used in the investigations , which were carried out in three separate test sites in which nearly identical procedure produced comparative , repetitive , and anomalous observations . Results indicate roof bolt tension change and roof quality deterioration anomalies were coincident with blasting . The hypothesized cause of the anomalies is a seismic shock generated by the blasts .

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. Recent changes in metallurgical practice, particularly those in flotation, have altered greatly the functions of the different units of a copper smelter. Gangue minerals are removed from the feed so much more thoroughly that the reverberatory furnace, once virtually a concentrator in which a low-grade ore was concentrated into a rich matte by virtue of the removal of gangue elements as slag, has become very largely a melting furnace in which the rich flotation concentrates are rendered molten so that they may be converted. Moreover, since the proportion of matte to slag in the reverberatory furnace output is greater than it was formerly, the amount of converter slag returned to the reverberatory for cleaning is, in comparison to the amount of slag actually formed in that furnace, also much larger. In some cases, approximately half of the reverberatory dump slag may have originated in the converter. The increase in the proportion of convertor slag to total slag produced has brought about certain consequences not entirely desirable. Converter slags contain a high percentage of iron and therefore are high in specific gravity and are very basic. A considerable guantity of magnetite, both dissolved and suspended as solid crystals, is always a component, The basic nature of the ordinary converter slag and the presence of the suspended magnetite crystals make impossible the reduction of the copper content of the slag below approximately 1 per cent by even the most prelonged settling, and a re-treating process is necessary. At present, general practice in western copper smelters is to return the converter slag molten to the reverberatory furnace. Here dilution by mixing, with slag formed in the reverberatory furnace and reaction with raw sulphides and siliceous materials in the reverberatory feed reduce the magnetite and increase the silicates to the point necessary for a satisfactory dump slag.

A mineral survey of 19,350 acres of the Gooding City of Rocks Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) in the north-central Snake River Plain was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. No formal mining districts are known in or near the study area. Forty-two placer claims within and adjacent to the study areas cover the Clover Creek diatomite deposit. Minor production from four pits was reported by the owners. The diatomaceous sediments are underlain by dacitic welded tuff and capped with basalt. Five exposures or blocks totaling 416 million tons of the diatomaceous material comprise the Clover Creek deposit; four of the blocks are in the study areas, out are predominantly covered by basalt. The North Clover block, just west of the areas, is only partially capped, and could be mined by open pit methods on the western flank of the exposure. The minable wedge contains an inferred marginal reserve of 35 million tons of diatomite possibly suitable for filter aid, filler, insulation, and other applications. At a production rate of 150,000 tons/year, total mining and milling costs for high-grade filter aid diatomite would be about $100/ton. The deposit is classed as marginal because products from this deposit may be inferior to currently marketed diatomite products. The market is well supplied by developed sources.

This investigation was made to study new methods to prepare high-purity yttrium metal, Various methods were used to prepare pure intermediate compounds, primarily chlorides, bromides, and iodides, which were subsequently reduced to metal. The process found most suitable for the preparation of pure anhydrous yttrium chloride involved thermal dehydration of a mixture of hydrated yttrium chloride and ammonium chloride while under vacuum. Yttrium bromide and iodide were prepared most effectively by the direct halogenation of yttrim carbide. Yttrim carbide was obtained by reacting and melting yttrium oxide-carbon mixtures in a carbon-arc furnace. Yttrium halides were purified by vacuum distillation and reduced by alkali or alkaline-earth metals. Lithium and sodium proved to be the best reductants from the standpoint of yield (>95 pct) and purity (>99.8 pct) of the yttrium. The product of the reduction step was sponge metal, which was consolidated readily by conventional cold-mold, arc-melting procedure. The purest yttrium obtained in laboratory scale work was prepared by sodium reduction of yttrium chloride and contained only 125 pp oxygen; other impurities did not exceed 1,000 ppm. In larger scale tests yttrium containing only 800 to 1,000 ppm total impurities was obtained by lithium reduction of yttrium chloride. The tensile properties of high-purity yttrium were determined. Mechanical tests showed that yttrium can be forged, extruded, rolled, spot welded, and deep drawn.
