Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. The study of "bottom-hole' samples follow,-is in natural sequence the study of samples3 obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1530, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, what physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing wells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental rata Mere obtained in the stud of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at some higher pressure, and later became mired with the original undissolved gas.

Bureau of Mines engineers examined the chemical and biological treatment of sewage water designed in one case for reuse and in another for subsurface injection. In the first case discussed, approximately 6 million gallons per day of sewage are treated by the activated sludge process followed by tertiary treatment that includes ion exchange. The renovated water is used in the industrial complex. Liquid industrial waste is sent to a waste disposal facility where it is treated for injection into a deep subsurface formation. In the second case, a community of 3,000 people is using a lagoon sewage treatment system followed by subsurface injection of t- treated effluent. Subsurface disposal is used to avoid growth of algae and weeds in a nearby lake to which the treated effluent was originally discharged. The renovation of municipal water for reuse provides a source of water for industries in a semiarid region and may also provide a source for domestic use in densely populated regions where domestic water requirements have priority over industry needs. In addition both waste treatment systems provide examples of the use of subsurface waste disposal to avoid pollution of surface streams.

"Silicosis is a fibrotic pulmonary disease produced by inhalation of silica-containing dusts (Peters, 1986). Chronic silicosis may develop 20-40 years after initial exposure to crystalline silica, and the disease may progress from a simple to a complicated form. Few symptoms are evident in simple silicosis with pulmonary function being relatively normal. However, chest radiographs reveal small rounded ·opacities in the upper lobes of the lungs. These silicotic nodules consist of collagen arranged in a distinctive circular pattern. As fibrotic changes become more severe, the disease progresses to complicated silicosis (progressive massive fibrosis). Complicated silicosis is associated with shortness of breath and decreases in pulmonary function characteristic ofrestrictive lung disease. Chest x rays reveal numerous large silicotic nodules which may be associated with scar emphysema. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the cellular events which result in silica-induced lung damage and fibrosis (Lapp and Castranova, 1993). They include: ( l) direct cytotoxicity of silica, (2) activation of oxidant and enzyme release from alveolar macrophages, (3) recruitment and activation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and (4) stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis.Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid derived from the Chinese herb Radix Stephania tetrandra. It has a molecular weight of 622.73 and an empirical formula of C38H420 6N2. The chemical structure of tetrandrine has been published previously by our laboratory (Castranova et al., 1991 a). Its structure is characterized by methoxy groups at C7 and C12 , uncharged nitrogens at N2 and N’2 and two 17-carbon ring members connected by a double oxygen bridge between Ca-C7 and C11-C12. Tetrandrine has been shown to reduce both silica-induced fibrosis and the elevation of lung collagen content in rats (Huang et al .. 1981; Yu et al., 1983; ldel, 1987). Furthermore, tetrandrine has been used as an antifibrotic agent in Chinese clinical trials (Li et al.. 1981 ). Preliminary results suggest that administration of tetrandrine to patients with silicosis results in substantial improvement of symptoms, increases in diffusion capacity, and decreases in the size of shadows on lung x rays."

The gradual depletion of high-grade mineral deposits and the necessity for development of lower-grade deposits together with the increased demand for nonmetallic minerals has increased the importance of the ore-dressing field during recent years. There is strong need for development of new ore-concentration methods and-machines to keep pace with the constant changing of marketing specifications and requirements resulting owing to the many new uses made of mineral products by the metallurgical industry.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

Three arc-melted ingots, two of a titanium-7 percent manganese alloy and the third of unalloyed titanium, were forged and rolled into 3/4-inch plate; comparative data were obtained on these processes. The finished plate, part of which was used by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance, was tested for mechanical and other properties. These properties were correlated with sponge purity, forging technique, rolling temperature, and cooling rate from the rolling temperature. For the alloy material, transformation data were obtained, and their age-hardening characteristics were studied. The temperature-impact relationship was established for rolled sections from all three ingots. INTRODUCTION Arc-melted ingots of unalloyed titanium and a titanium-manganese alloy were fabricated into plate under closely controlled conditions by personnel of the Metals and Alloys Section, Physical Metallurgy Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md. This program was cosponsored by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance. Bureau of Mines interest lay in correlating the processing procedures with the mechanical properties of the finished plate.

This paper is one of a series describing; mining and milling methods and costs being published by the Bureau of Mines. It deals with the mineral resources of western South Dakota and describes the mining and milling of tantalite and associated amblygonite by the Black Hills Tin Co. and the Fansteel Mining Corporation. The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

In its unending search for the raw materials that the affluent society of today requires the mining industry has found it necessary to go to great depths, in many cases, to produce these materials. Inherent with this problem is the insufficient technology relating to improving extreme environments that the mine personnel are exposed to. In this dissertation, the sources of heat flow into a mine along with the various effects that this heat has on the mine personnel are investigated. The object of dissertation is to compile all the available published information pertaining to these underground heat and their effects into one paper. This will provide the mining industry with an available easy-to-use to aid in the determination of mine ventilation requirements as the mines are in the phases of original planning or being extended to depth. Areas of significant, deficiencies it knowledge have been disclosed during this overall appraisal. Recommendations on important basic research needs are out lined for future consideration by Federal or industries sponsorship. This thesis should serve as a stimulus lo, future well-organized research efforts in the area of underground heat sources and their control.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of variations in content (near the residual level) of the impurities aluminum, nitrogen, manganese, and copper on the corrosion rate in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam of zircaloy-3, a zirconium-base alloy of 0.25 percent tin and 0.25 percent iron. Thirty-five 10-pound ingots were cast with the appropriate additions of impurity elements, and these were converted to wrought sheets. These specimens were then tested both in water and in steam. The analysis of the resulting data showed that in environments of either pressurized hot water or superheated steam, corrosion rates increased with increasing content of aluminum, nitrogen, or manganese, but were not affected by variations of copper. The effects of aluminum and nitrogen were found to be greater than the effect of manganese. INTRODUCTION At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in August 1956, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Bettis Plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp., began investigating the effects of certain impurity elements on the corrosion rates of zircaloy-3 in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam. It was necessary to know these effects in order to set control limits on residual impurity levels in zirnaloy-3, intended for heat transfer service in the nuclear reactor of the pressurized water type. A factorial expert it was designed by Westinghouse statisticians. The Atomic Energy Commission provided raw zirconium sponge purchased from Wah Chang Corp. The Bureau's laboratory at Albany, Oreg., made material of different combinations of impurity levels and subjected the material to corrosion tests. This report will describe the work done at the Bureau laboratory and will show, quantitatively the effects of different residual levels of aluminum or nitrogen, or manganese or copper on corrosion rates.

That natural gas-gasoline can be used to advantage as a refrigerant is suggested by the fact that the "make" tanks and other parts of the equipment of gasoline plants frequently become coated with frost. The experiments reported in this paper confirm this assumption and indicate that volatile gasoline can be use used to advantage in many refrigerating plants. The Bureau of Mines is making a study of wax distillates in order to find out why satisfactory lubricating oils and waxes can be made easily from certain crude oils and only with difficulty from others. In the commercial distillation of crude petroleum it is customary to separate the distillates into the following groups: (A) Gasolines and naphthas, (B) Kerosenes, (C) Gas oil, and (D) Wax distillate (consisting mostly of light lubricating oil together with small amounts of paraffin Wax).

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. "The high injury rand fatality rate in coal mining, as compared with other industries, has caused the mining industry to become more and more interested in accident prevention methods.The prevention of accidents in the mining industry is probably not as simple a problem as it is in other industries, but if the experience of coal mining companies who have taken up the work of accident prevention seriously during recent years means anything, there is little doubt that most mining companies car improve their accident records very materially.Such results can be obtained in practically all instances without adding to production costs. In fact, there is little doubt that a well-organized program of accident prevention Will bring about a 'material production cost reduction due to increased efficiency, lower labor turnover, fewer delays due to accidents, better satisfied workmen, and a direct saving in compensation costs as well as many other items of expense.The more closely a. person is connected with the work of accident prevention, the more he becomes a believer in the value of amity in human relationships and the more he is able to exercise a spirit of toleration, fairness, justness, and helpfulness toward the problems of others, whatever those problems may be. Human nature responds to just these expressions of good willAnother great and invaluable effect of working for safety, is the fact that it is building up in the mind an appreciation of that which is constructive and, conversely, in opposition to that which is destructive In other words; the person who is sincerely striving to prevent accidents because they are destructive, costly, tad injurious, is subconsciously training his mind to look on any proposition from a constructive point of view. Working for accident prevention and safety is about the finest social training any person can have. It does not make a Person a financial Wizard or an executive genius, but it does make for the highest type of citizenship.While humanitarian reasons alone should be sufficient to maze accident prevention work an important factor in every mining organization, there are other reasons as well, since it has been proved conclusively that there can be no efficiency and economy without safety, as somebody pays when safety is lacking. Every safety device pays dividends; every safety application evaded is an assessment and a loss. Dangerous conditions are the most expensive and extravagant conditions in or about a coal mine. The economic gains are of considerable interest to all coal mining companies and this is brought about as before stated--through decreased compensation rates, the reduction of labor turnover, etc."

The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Hecla Mining Co., is conducting a rock mechanics study of the 6,200-ft-deep circu-lar, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho. The objective of the project was to instrument and evaluate lining behavior and rock de-formation when a deep shaft is constructed in a high in situ stress field and anisotropic rock mass. Rock mass displacements were moni-tored with multiple-position borehole extensometers. Liner stress and strain were measured with concrete pressure cells and embedment strain gauges. Field data from the 5,955-ft test level show that rock displacement is controlled by rock mass anisotropy. Liner stress and strain levels reflect the high in situ stress field as well as nearby station and raise construction. Maximum stresses measured in the lining, as a result of shaft excavation, are about one-third of its compressive strength. Subsequent loading pocket excavation resulted in signifi-cantly increased stress and strain levels in the liner. Continued monitoring and preliminary analysis of the data indicate that concrete-lined, circular shafts are stable for the high, unequal horizontal stress fields and rock anisotropy encountered in deep-level mining. Adjacent development work can be expected to significantly alter the initial stress and displacement conditions.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Board for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain and other countries in Europe. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy atmospheres which through neglect or accident might surround the equipment. The means employed by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The third of these surveys covers conditions in Germany.

This report summarizes the work accomplished under Bureau of Mines contract H0188068. The contract required design and construction of a high voltage (7.5 KV) explosion proof cable connector for use on underground coal mine drag cables. A connector was constructed with elastomeric phase insulators that provide insulation shielding throughout the connector length. Connector housing was made of flame resist-ant cast poly urethane with no exposed metal components. Electrical and mechanical testing of the completed coupler resulted in satisfactorily meeting most of the design testing requirements.

This paper is one of a series covering mineral resources of the Nation . It describes briefly most of the known manganese deposits of eastern Arizona , which for the purpose of this report includes the counties of Navajo , Apache , Gila, Graham, Greenlee , Pinal , Pima , Santa Cruz , and Cochise . With few exceptions , these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writers . Work on this paper was begun in May 1956 , and in the following 18 months 151 deposits were examined . The distribution of the deposits by counties is as follows : 1 in Navajo , and 1 in Apache , 37 in Gila , 4 in Graham, 13 in Greenlee , 25 in Pinal , 13 in Pima , 12 in Santa Cruz , and 45 in Cochise . In surveyed areas the locations of the deposits are described by section , township , and range and in unsurveyed areas , by approximate projections of these subdivisions . The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian . The history, production, ownership , geologic setting , and mining methods used are discussed for most of the deposits that were visited . Probably , some occurrences have been overlooked , but all of the principal ones have been examined . Ore dressing studies were made of typical ores from several of the larger districts . The work was performed in the laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory . The results of these studies are given with the descriptions of the deposits from which the samples were taken .

"A recent paper prepared by the writer summarized the results of an analysis of the accident records of 34 metal mines for the calendar year 1925. The present paper summarizes the results of a similar analysis of the accident records of 59 coal mines for the same year. This summary is based upon reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by operating companies that par¬ticipated in the National Safety Competition of 1925.The purpose of the Competition was to establish the lowest accident-severity rate, thus showing the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to total number of man-hours worked. The reports covered all lost-time accidents that occurred during the year, that is, all accidents that disabled an employee beyond the day or shift on which the accident occurred. Detailed information for each of the 59 coal mines is given in the appended table. Each mine employed at least fifty men underground; over half of than employed more than 200 men underground. Hence the accident records should be typical of those of large-scale mining operations in general where the company is devoting special attention to accident-prevention work. The mines covered by the reports are situated in eleven States: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia.A tabulation of the reports covering the 59 mines showed an accident-frequency rate of 123 per million hours of ""exposure* and an accident-severity rate of 10.214 per thousand hours of exposure3. The total volume of exposure or employment was 29,117,561 hours, representing the equivalent of work of 12,000 men for three hundred 8-hour shifts. The records covered employment and accident above ground as well as underground, although they did not include stripping or open-pit mining. Accidents during the year resulted in 33 deaths, 1 permanent total disability, 28 permanent partial disabilities, and 3,510 temporary injuries. These accidents represented a loss of tine equal to 297,417 man days. In arriving at this lost-time equivalent, each fatality and permanent total disability was weighted at 6,000 lost days (see footnote 3), as specified in the scale adopted by the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions; permanent partial disabilities were weighted according to nature of injury, in accordance with the scale adopted by the :Board; temporary injuries were weighted according to the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was incapacitated as a result of the injury."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.
